Elrond was a half-elven lord in Middle-earth, but strangely he was one of the most powerful figures in all of Middle-earth! Today we will explore why that was! Thank you all so much for watching, let me know your thoughts on this in the comments below! As always, a great thanks to the online artists whose visual works made this video possible! If you are one of the artists, please let me know and I will post your name and a link to your work in this description!

"I bring word from Elrond of Rivendell." Quietly a powerhouse that everyone remembers but don't think of right away. Personally I think his ultimate power comes from his wisdom and a universal safe haven. Everyone sought his council and opinion which helped to shape the future. And his home was a place of rest and peace, something all good folk crave more than anything 😊

Certainly having so many ancestors who were powerful in their own right played a major role in why Elrond was a power himself. But one thing that I think is overlooked is that he was wise enough to learn from the many terrible mistakes the Noldor had made when they returned to Middle-Earth.

Elrond was powerful for several reasons. He had one of the three Elven rings of power. Which gave him some abilities. Like his power of healing. He is part Elf, part man, and part Maia. He has strong physical and magical abilities.

He is a descendant of Beren and Luthien who took back one of the Silmaril from Melkor himself. He is also a part of the lineage of Turin Torumbar, Hurin, Huor, Tuor, and so forth. He is a descendant of Fingolfin who was able to fight Melkor in single combat and give him wounds that would haunt him forever. He's also the son of Earendil who succeeded in reaching Valinor and called the Valar for aid against Melkor. :P He even is a descendant of the Maiar Melia. So of course, he is powerful. :P

Elves believed that one person cannot be both a great warrior and a great healer. My theory is that after seeing so much death in the war of the Last Alliance, Elrond gave up the life of a warrior and became a healer instead. Same choice that Eowyn made in LotR, essentially.

What impresses me the most about Elrond is that despite all the loss and the grief he lived through, he deliberately chose a path of compassion and kindness to all the free peoples of Middle Earth. Also, that he chose to stay and help men in the fight against Sauron--which he must have known would happen eventually--rather than skipping off to the safety of Valinor. I've always wondered if--like Cirdan--Elrond knew it was his duty to stay??

I just got back from watching all three movies in theaters for the first time. The first movie came out when I was 3, so I'm thankful my local theater put them on for an occasion. I'm quite morose and don't know what to do with myself, I never want it to be over :( but this channel has always felt like an extension of Tolkien whether I'm referencing vids while reading the books or rewatching the movies. Thanks for being here and keeping the fantasy alive!

Exactly the show makers say they want to depict Elrond in a more young and unlearned sense which doesn’t exactly make sense for an elf who’s already been alive as long as since the end of the first age, additionally they seem to undermine his importance or status among elves as as was mentioned he is royalty- the defendant of all 3 houses of the Edain, descendant of noldor, vanyar & teleri royalty and great great grandchild of a maia so surely he should be regarded with much higher respect at that time

5:40 I think the power scaling in his works varies depending on the will *at the moment* of the characters. Like, when Fingolfin fought a literal god, the most powerful of all the gods, and held his own... that was sheer will that kept him alive. For a fleeting moment there, a mere elf was as mighty as Tulkas himself.

I have a few questions about magic in Tolkien's works. I know the Magic/Creation that the Valar do is a finite part of them (and maybe also the world itself). 1. Are they both the same power? 2. If not, do the Valar have both Creation AND Magic? 3. If they do, is their Magic the same as Elven Magic? 4. Is ALL Elven Magic Galadriel's "I don't know what you're talking about, we're just very good with nature" Magic? 4a. Is the Magic Galadriel used "to throw down Dol Guldur's walls" the same as her "good with nature" Magic? 4b. Is the Magic of the Elven rings the same as Galadriel's "good with nature" Magic? 5. Is Elrond's Healing Magic the same as the Magic he uses at the Bruinen? 6. Is Gandalf's Magic he uses at the Bruinen the same as Elrond's? 6a. Do Gandalf the Grey and Gandalf the White use the same Magic? (For completion's sake, I think I know this one: He had less restrictions as GtW) This was all triggered by a recollection I'm not sure of, that Elrond's Healing Magic was different from other kinds of Magic. Thank you to anyone who made it this far. 😁

@@exharkhun5605 more then likely it would turn his gift of foresight inwards and he would grow paranoid, and hasty. Maybe even change his demeanor of kindness into pathological altruism, leading to foolish mistakes in judging character and this allowing unsavory individuals into his fold, ie Grima Wormtongues or a similar fate to the Wizard of Many Colors Saruman.

I like how Tolkien's magic sounds something like radiation. You know how often the land is said to "remember" that the eldar once lived there and therefore those places could be good? Like some sort of divine radiation from the two trees that enlightened the eldar and lingered in the land wherever they did. I know it ISN'T radiation, but it reads in some ways similar to it.

I think it's implied in Tolkien that there was a magical aspect to the world that was accessible by all creatures except the hobbits, and that exclusion might only be because hobbits were suspicious of anything magical. But we can see uses or implications of magic at work applied by men, elves, dwarves, orcs. This is a principle that should always be considered when thinking about were any individual obtained their magical abilities.
