Why Was the Carrack Made? 

The short answer to the question in the title is to facilitate large volume transport over great distances.
The carrack was a Portugeese ship developed from the Hanseatic cog combined with the developments made with the caravel.
Thus the carrack was both manouverable and could handle large volumes of goods.
The carrack was also one of the first ships with combined rigging having both square rig and lateen sails. This made it the ancestor of the advanced rigging plans of the age og sail.

The carrack would be used as fishing base ships by the Portugeese and Spanish, when the went codfishing by the Newfoundland banks and Greenland. Regarding Greenland I recently read and interesting little counterfactual book about an archaeologist finding traces of an ancient culture based on whaling at the coasts of Greenland. Its called "The Whale Culture of Greenland.
