The Hanseatic cog was a large medieval trading ship employed primarily by the German merchants of the Hanseatic league. It was not a particualrly seaworthy ship and was not really oceangoing, but it could carry a large quantity of goods and wad suited for coastal trade in the Baltic sea and North sea. It was the dominant merchant vessel for much of the middel ages in Northern Europe. It travel from England in the West to Russia in the East and Norway in the North.

Thank you for putting these videos together. It's pretty much exactly what I was after! Interesting and succinct videos about different medieval ships, how they were used and how they evolved over time.

What people do not realise is that the Knar was the base for all future , formulas in calculating cargo space and size of ships.

Great video! The cog dominated trade for hundereds of years in one of the most economically dynamic areas of the world. And we hardly ever hear anything about it.

These kinds of ships delivered cargo's as far as Cologne, about 300km up the Rhine from Holland. I believe tow paths were available on the river though it may have been possible to sail much of the way. So much to learn. I don't under stand how these tow paths worked. European civilization is built around both coastal and river cities.

What would the minimum crew size of a Cog?
@leclubdaventuredoutre-mer
@leclubdaventuredoutre-mer 2 года назад
Minimum crew to handle the cog at any given time would be 4, but usually 20 would be on board to have shifts, maintain and unload. This does not mean that some merchants would not go closer to the 4 man minimum to cut costs. The cog like todays container ships was a commercial vessel each crew member would reduce profit.

@@leclubdaventuredoutre-mer thank you. So this ship would be ideal for not long sea voyages but running along the coast line. You just helped me with a project i am working on. I am working on D&D adventure, but i like to use factual places and real equipment.
