I think we romanticize a lot of high control cultures...the Amish come to mind, but also a lot of people romanticize Priests, Nuns, and even members of the LDS.

I can see Catholicism from both sides...but the thing is I happen to be asexual, meaning vows of celibacy would not be very significant to me. There's a chance that if I'd been Catholic, I might have considered a convent. I even think it's possible St. Paul was coming from the same point of view and that he genuinely didn't understand how his perspective differed from others. He wouldn't have had the language for it at the time, any more than I did when I was younger. And if you happen to be heteroromantic it can be hard to know the difference between that and typical heterosexuality without being given the vocabulary for it. I've come to the opinion that either you should be naturally inclined to celibacy or be very, VERY sure of what you're doing before you consider taking that on. But I really do have a hard time saying priests and nuns shouldn't exist as they do. (I'm Methodist though, so we don't have holy orders and we're egalitarian...yes, even conservative Global Methodists are still middle of the road enough that we have female pastors.)

Great video! There are definite cons in yoga. I would like to clear up something in the history of yoga. The first concepts of yoga was written in the 2nd century BC by patanjali called the yoga sutras. It is a part of the vedas. Most of yoga which literally means “union”is more centered around the practice of raja yoga which is meditation. There are seven steps to yoga practice and the physical step (asana) is only one step of the seven to prep the body for meditation. The highest level is samadhi which is when “that in which you meditate on and you become one”. The history of yoga is deep and is more about how to achieve what is talked about in the bagavad Gita. Most true gurus (guru means teacher) and yogis believe that you don’t follow a man (human) you follow your own practice to self realization. It is believed that all you need is inside of you. That is what is interesting to finding the yoga cons because it usually consists of a person getting you to need them versus the guru always helping you go within.

Another great conversation! I am thankful that yoga was introduced to me strictly as a physical practice when I was 12 years old and in 9th grade in a private school that my mom put me in for that year. Yoga was my physical education class. The teacher kept it really straightforward with no spiritual indoctrination. I do remember some historical framework given for what I believe was Hatha yoga and that it was partially developed by a yogi watching his cat stretch. It was in the 1970s. The New Age movement hadn't quite fully blossomed, and I'm glad that I learned yoga without it being new age, or spiritual. It was strictly a physical practice that felt good and allowed me to enjoy my physical flexibility.

@@michelecraig9658 I mean, thank goodness we don’t know exactly how the narcissist’s mind works, but as you said, they do seem to like a challenge. I do feel for people who have narcissistic personality disorder though, as deep down they believe they’re so bad that they can’t even go there :( It’s very rare to get this type of personality disorder coming to mental health services for help, and if they do, unfortunately they will usually just use the therapist like they use most people, for supply. It would take a very skilled therapist to be able to help someone with this personality type. I didn’t think you were casting blame on Joelle by the way. I wasn’t implying you were not informed. It’s easy to get misunderstood and to misunderstand on social media isn’t it, with such short comments. And I get misunderstood a lot anyway. Anyway, let’s be grateful we’re not narcissistic. I can’t find the comment right now (possibly because I’m watching on my phone) but with the question about how to trust your own intuition when you have a traumatic past with religion, I wonder if remembering to keep space to reflect might be one tool. I’m lucky to have not been caught up in a cult (I’m sure it could have happened to me as easily as to anyone else) but a common theme I notice when people talk about them is how much and how clearly they remember the thoughts and actions of the leader and how little space and time they had to reflect back on the little red flag moments that did pop up for them. Awesome interview thanks Joelle ❤

(explanation: I was in a hindu-derived cult myself, spent a lot of time in India and later did some formal religious studies). I would not say Indians are not necessarily duped as much. It is more that: 1) they are duped by a somewhat different narrative adjusted to that market with more localised cultural elements, often on a more conservative and politically right-wing side, vs the one aimed at liberal left-leaning westerners looking for an alternative spirituality. It does not make it less or more manipulative though, it is just easier to see it in others. 2) we are comparing a general population (Indian guys in general) with a very small subset of already "primed" westerners (spiritual seekers already infatuated with a mythical projection on Indian culture). That said, there seems to be a convergence over the last decades with the material development in India, with more of those previously mostly western-oriented narratives having a bigger presence with modern urban indian demographics and some expat groups and individuals outside the country. The assumption being that migrations to big urban centers or other countries deeroots people and makes them more prone to search for something vaguely familiar in more neo-Hindu environments. But even so there are few that have a similar presence on both markets, most have either predominantly Indian or western followings. Maybe that Sadguru guy that is making rounds this days, he seems to have an impact on both sides, not sure how much though. Joelle is probably overthinking that guy and searching for more deep motivation even now. India is a big country with a lot of people in a very competitive environment and there are truckloads of guys like that. As a westerner (being a target for such types) you see multiple ones every day at times, coming from different angles with various levels of scams. Girls of course have an additional layer of romantic scams, not just financial and power-based. I've seen some of those even from their side, as some younger guys were not always hiding with other guys, even westerners, if scamming western girls was their main thing. From what we heard here he was probably very far from an "educated" (in a traditional religious sense) Hindu. It is difficult to be sure just from second and manipulation stories, but I would guess he knows much less than an average Indology graduate, possibly never learned sanskrit etc., which might be one reason for being hesitant about going into public more spiritual/religious teaching. Might be just a character trait or the way he set his system of manipulation. Also no need to rationalise so much emotional entanglements. A lot of girls fall for gurus, much like for other public authority figures, and often problems start because of the inevitable "cheating", asking them to have abortions and similar. Because they did not fulfill a good relationship role, not because they were able to win them over as such.

According to linguistic scholars, the term "namaste" means "the god within me, greets the god within you". (even if it is currently used flippantly) A young Brahmin caste man, wrote about how he was devout... so devout in fact, that he practiced yoga as a young man. This is significant, because the the term yoga translates as "yoking with". Elderly Hindus will often begin practicing yoga, in hopes of yoking themselves to the spirits that will guide them in the next reincarnation. (this explains why the young don't tend to do it.... they are feeling 'bullet-proof' as it were.) As for the roots of yoga, you need to turn to the Hindu scriptures, known as the Bhagavadgita. (please pardon the spelling) In that book, Shiva is given credit for starting the practice of yoga. Shiva is also known as "the destroyer". If anyone is thinking of reporting my comment.... please be honest, and check several sources to see if these things are correct or not. (by several sources, I mean ask practicing Hindus, former Hindus, and linguistic experts who understand that language use evolves over time)

🤔😊Joelle, I like to think of energy as being something I own. I honestly visualize it as my battery. I ask myself how I can add to that battery like with food, sleep, solitude or joy (for example). Conversely, I constantly monitor what is draining my energy (battery). It could be toxic people or giving in to others want of my time. If I'm with a negative person or feeling surrounded by negative energy, I make a conscious effort to reflect that back rather than absorb it. I put up my metaphorical shield. I also do my best to send out positive energy. Just giving a warm greeting, complement or assistance to a stranger creates a warming energized feeling to a space. Joelle, I feel that energy in you.❤ Even though this man is no longer in your life, are you doing what you need to in order not to absorb his negative energy?

What it is. is natural.. to breathe deep and stretch brings us from the anxiety state, to our natural state of being.. people call that spiritual and I call it our natural state… it feels good to stretch.. it feel s good to relax and breathe. It feels good to be still in Savasana.. It feels good. And feeling good is natural… not spiritual or sacred…

*The feminine counterpart of a Guru is a Muse ...* ka-ba-la as it should be used to make a difference between primal and secondary or direct and indirect ka = female & spiritual, the Teacher, Source ba = male & material, the Master, God la = body (~ ba) & nobody (~ ka), the Pupil, Ego (external worth ~ ba & internal validation ~ ka) In our social circumstances, the material gain (ba) is more rewarded than the internal self-worth. It has made us richer in a material sense but poorer in a spiritual sense. The religions ( ~ ba) have made the ka 'haram', but we still need the 'dark' side of ourselves to explain things that cannot be seen or proven and that's where the story walks in. The *muse* inspires the master and shares with him her knowledge of the ka. Making the material gains more important than 'happiness' changed our perception of life as it is and we're searching for what we've lost so long ago that we can't remember why or how it happened. Imagination (~ ka) is necessary to survive and lying is a form of imagination, but it will not stand in court (which is a ba-construction, supervised by God, Allah, or sacred texts). I mean, we all have to do the brain-work ourselves and share our experiences to teach the other the reality beyond the facade. I was 52 years old before I started collecting the evidence of being (ab)used for many years and often, that's the reason why they regard the situation as definitive (which is not true since everything has a ba-side and a ka-side. I figured out a solution myself that is not too difficult to realise, but justice rejects it because of precedents (and that's a missed chance for all of us). Anyway, the future will prove me right or wrong and the least I can do is *try* it, maybe some big names will feel inspired.

Since I stopped torturing myself that way, stopped doing things because some humans told me that is what I have to do, I'm different. I understand doing ritualistic things for my own efficiency, but not to break my own free will. So I do certain things the same way because it makes my life easier, frees my mind for what it enjoys. Which is being present in our connection to spirit in this eden of a World.

The tantric traditions are older, and you will find quite a lot of it in Taoist and Chinese forms of Buddhism. It was ones thought of as mystic and secret, but you can find it described quite well in English and German literature from around 1930. I don`t know why some are attracted to these new age cults, be it Indian or anything else. Europeans know it well, with all kinds of denominations and charismatic movements, not to talk about all the mediums and clairvoyants, some are the real thing, others not. With gurus, they are teachers or a knowledge, not always easy to understand through books. These movements are centered around them, with the notion they are needed to gain the wisdom. That said, some are closer to the genuine thing than others, but with religions, take them with a pinch of salt, what they claim to be isn`t always what they practice.

what these westerners do not understand is that, in India, what is actually valued is a well lived householder life. at most, people like to give alms to religious people, not get tangled with them. most people understand that the people who leave the householder way of life are either those with great destinies, or just plain rebels who want to live an itenarant life. those people are tolerated, vaguely respected, but treated warily....so that creates more or less separate spaces for the householders and the rebels...these people like to rush in where the sensible fear to tread......

Yoga is tens of thousands of years old...take off those layers of conditioning. It's not "a set of exercises"...it's a guided path to nirvaan/enlightenment for which you need a body at its best so it can endure extremes, like, sitting in meditation for hrs/days...hence all those exercises/postures to practice. Funny when people call it "new age". Google has a lot of info on it, if one is really interested. Joelle, it's plain to see, was never really into Yoga.

Joelle, I think that guy conned you with everything, from things you said he doesn't sound spiritual at all or spiritually advanced, I'm doubting if he had any spiritual gifts either, one word to describe him.. fake!.. It sounds to me like he probably got the breathing stuff of of the internet and really didn't have much idea about things . I've studied a lot of yogi stuff and learnt things under a good teacher and even at advanced levels which aren't usually taught to the general public, we didn't do our breathing practices like you said here eg you said he taught 20 mins of each kind, that alone doesn't make sense to do as they are not all the same and the breathing practices shouldn't be each for the same amount of time as the different breathing does different things and some forms are stronger than others. Often different types of breathings are done in a set amount many cycles.. how of cycles depends on the sort of pranayama being done eg some kundalini breathing may be done for less than 2mins in a beginner or it can be dangerous.. Alternative nostril breathing (this balances the left and right brain and is also a pre meditation form of pranayama... 20 mins is a very long time to be doing that kind of pranayama and it's not necessary at all to do it that long if it is being done correctly.
@tanyabrown9839

Joelle, the end of the video and what was said concerned me as it sounded like you may be still vulnerable and could be taken advantage of in future and if there is a way I can help to try to make sure that doesn't happen to you again, I'd like to help so want to offer you. FREE and I want NOTHING in return.. no money, no requests of you, and Im female and not gay or bisexual and neither are I trying to recruit anyone into a group or have you meet anyone. There are still good people out there. I just sometimes help others when I think they may need it and if I'm drawn to want to try to help someone. I think it's truly terrible what was done to you and scary and sad that you fell for this so badly as there was just so many red flags. I'd like to put out an offer to you to help you in a way my teacher helped me. What my teacher did was he taught his more advanced students (that's not to say you wouldn't be able to learn this right now, it can be easy and not what I'd call an advanced skill, I've taught quite a few how to feel energy) , to scan the chakras of anyone you are ever thinking about having for a higher teacher so that you won't get conned when seeking out spiritual teacher's (at some point something could have you seeking again, I want you safe). I'm making this offer to you as I am assuming you may believe in chakras or still open to that idea. Say if you want to seek out a spiritual teacher in the future it's important to find one who has a bigger crown chakra and spiritual cord (the divine energy flows down into the crown and there is a column of energy which is entering peoples heads and this can be clearly scanned. If someone doesn't have a good sized spiritual cord and crown chakra and a decent sized heart chakra, they certainly not okay to be guiding anyone on any kind of spiritual path. Anyway, what I'm offering is to try to teach you to scan chakras for nothing at all in return (my payment is just knowing I was able to help another who I felt may need it to help themselves) .. how to actually feel this for yourself in just a few lessons so that in future you can instantly rule out someone you may be attracted towards but who possibly may try to con you. (I may be able to teach you that in just one short lesson but I want to make sure you can then scan others confidently and most importantly correctly and not deluding themselves so suggest a few lessons so you could then practice and get confirmation on how you are doing with it). Completely understandable though if after all you've been through that you wouldn't trust someone enough to let them try to help you. I may not know you but I just want you to be safe. If you don't want to reach out to me, I completely understand and then I will just say.. please please please always be very discerning in future. Anyway, i just wanted to let you know that there is a way that some of us can tell who is going to certainly be bad to be teaching us and that you may be capable of learning this for yourself (even then I still say be discerning.. my teacher always taught to blindly believe NOONE and to even be discerning on what we were being taught, good teachers always try to help people be safe).

Ok, ik this isn't related to the video but, OHHHH MYYYY GOSHHHH! Shelise! I was watching past life regression and just saw your episode! 😂😂 that's amazing. Soon as I saw ur face I was like what?! That's Cults to Conciousness Shelise! 😂😂 I've always wanted to have this done bc I absolutely believe in past lives. I feel like I just know for sure, somehow, for whatever reason, that I lived in a castle sometimes in the 1500's and my name was Anne. It's just so odd. But I just feel like I know it so I've always wanted to try and validate this. Your hypnosis was insane girl! I was on the edge of my seat the entire time lol. I wanted to ask, what brought you to want to have this experience? Was everything truly, truly 100% real? Or were some of your "acting skills" involved? (Sorry, Lol, I had to ask 🤭) also, was there ever a time in your life that you had some sort of epiphany or sign, or maybe a dream of dejavu that you had a past life or was it just strictly bc you donated your eggs and didn't know you were so passionate about that? Jeez! I'm still, like, giddy lol. I'm so interested and intrigued by these types of experiences. Like the shows where children say they have a past life, and I watch a lot of the spirit shows and medium shows. Do you believe in mediums and that our loved ones are literally right here with us, like just beyond a thin veil? Anyway, I'm a huge fan. I could listen to for hours. And I'm super thrilled you're expecting a precious baby of your own. There's no love in this universe than the love you feel that first moment you hear the little whimper and cries of the actual life you created. It's such a warm, fulfilling experience. As if your purpose is now in your arms and you would give your own life for this one to survive. How wonderful this world of ours can be. ❤ God Bless you and Jonathan! 🥰

Hi Savoy! Yes! That was in 2014! Crazy. I had applied to be an on camera research assistant on the show but then they called me and told me they are no longer needing that position but asked if I would be willing to be hypnotized. So it basically just fell into my lap. It really was 100% real aside from the fact that the two regressions were shot on two different days. I first regressed back to Mary and then the next day they called and said they were so impressed that they wanted me to come back and do it a second time. They definitely played up the egg donation thing lol I did donate eggs the day before my regression, but I never felt it was a compulsive thing as they said. There definitely were a lot of cross overs though in my life. They cut out the part where I had said when I looked up the uniform John would have worn in the military. I had a leather coat that I was absolutely obsessed with and actually wore in the show that was the exact same military design.

Yoga is actually a very old thing which has probably always been around the thing is Westerners often think it's just physical exercises (that is only one form of yoga), yoga though means "union" and about becoming more one with the different aspects of ourselves and connecting with the lower parts of ourselves with our higher parts and universal consciousness, uniting ourselves. The Buddhist Yogachara/yogacara which teaches yoga goes back to the 4th century.

this lady uses a British woman with Indian heritage as an example to say "it wasn't always the case that all Indian people saw right through him" 🤣 that's exactly the point - the woman from the UK that fell for his tricks was just that - a woman from the UK. A British woman, even with Indian heritage is British at the end of the day, not really Indian. She wouldn't have grown up with the same wariness towards Indian snake oil salesmen as people who grow up in India do. The pranayama she was talking about is literally something I learned from my mom at less than 10 years old. It's funny to hear her talk about him, it sounds like she thinks there was actually stuff her conman husband actually knew, when it was very obvious he was a scammer through and through.
