I love the understated look of this Pelagos model. It ticks so many boxes: lightweight yet durable, excellent bezel action, flat dial and hour markers, the colour and design.
Great video and overall very helpful comments. However, I have to point out that the only reason you have a clasp issue is because you and your husband open the clasp backwards haha. You pull from the end where the flip lock is located, since the hinge is on the other side. Pretty much this way on any bracelet, ever. Try it out and I'm sure the t-fit will no longer fail you.
@@Gojo2OP Has more to do with the clasp. Maybe the wrist I wear watches on? Not sure but flipping one link, half link, etc doesn’t always do it. Flipping the whole bracelet doesn’t always either.
The gripes about the marketing make me laugh. These are luxury watches. Nobody’s repairing North Sea Oil Rigs with no-date Submariners any more. Good for Tudor for embracing reality and realizing that their core audience is really people aspiring to a certain kind of lifestyle. You want a tool watch, buy a G-Shock. This is jewelry, and we all know it.
Thanks for the feedback. I’m a Pelagos 42 (blue) daily driver. Have a black diver on my buy list in the next 3 months. The 39er is currently one of three top candidates for me. The light weight makes it an absolute plus as the 42 is already such a joy to wear due to its presence to weight ratio.
Thanks for a great review Jenni. I wandered into my friendly AD some weeks ago just after this watch was released and had the chance to look at and try this model but not purchase it. I loved the look and the restrained hue of the titanium. Before seeing it in the flesh I wasn't that bothered as I have the LHD Pelagos. Anyway the 39 is in my humble opinion it's own watch and not just a deflated 42, the sunray dial is very subtle in most cases looking a very deep black and the ceramic lumed markers sitting on the dial and not the sculpted rehaut of the 42 is another differentiator. A week or so after expressing an interest I had the call and it's been on the wrist for a week and have no issues with the clasp. I'll be keeping my LHD 42 for definite as I said these are two quite different watches. It's also a lot different to the 58, that flat sapphire crystal, no high polishing it's like the BB58 takes the inspiration from the past and does it very well, the Pelagos 39 looks to the present.
Thanks for these comments, review was great, but misses the nuance that time on wrist gives. I'll get one I think once back in Europe from Central Asia.
Love the minimalistic approach, and the square markers match the snowflake hour marker, the round ones just didn’t gel with the rest. Tudor making a watch which is not just a cheap copy, but making its mark, love it. I love the submariner as this is the gold standard, but can’t even get on a waiting list, so I will buy this watch and I like it a lot as an independent quality product.
Right. Most people who buy luxury watches (divers or what have you) aren't professional divers anyway, and most professional divers dont wear luxury watches (at least not while diving), so big who cares. I'd say that they for once marketed it somewhat honestly.
Great review as always. Just a note on the clasp I open all my Tudors from the security latch side including the T-Fit ones as they have that little thumb catch to pull on. Opening the other way as you mentioned seems very awkward to myself.
Yeah glad someone else noticed that lol. This unwanted opening of the t-fit adjustment is only happening from opening the clasp backwards. It's on a hinge and definitely meant to be pulled from the "top". That's why clasps without the latch (like Omega twin triggers) have the buttons at the top.
Seems like an obvious way to open not sure why he is opening the wrong way. Tudor even has a raised area for your nail to easily fit and release the clasp. So weird.
HI Jenni, as always, another great video. I picked up the Pelagos 42 3 weeks ago. I have been a little disappointed in the watch. My biggest grip is with the sharp edges around the crown guard. When winding the watch, the edges underneth are sharp and seem unfinished and the bezel is very stiff. It has smoothed out a little with several rotations. I got a decent price at $4200 USD but this price point is not a cheap beater. This is my first Tudor and I am a little underwhelmed. I will continue to wear it and give it a fair judgement. Keep up the good work.
The bezel will become less stiff. Turn it around 10 times and you will see that it will be smooth. Maybe you have to turn and press a little the first round when you start form the firm/fixed position at 12. Crown action is a bit stiff also but this will also be better in a few weeks. Tolerances are tight with this great tool watch. I have the blue by the way. Love it!
Advertising makes no difference to me. I either like the watch or I don’t. In this case I do, very much. There is a wait in the U.K. but agree should not spend overs for any Tudor.
Fantastic review, but why no mention of the paint splatter near the tip of the second hand? (Great macro photography BTW!) If/when I get one, I’m bringing a loupe to double check the quality. That paint splatter would drive me nuts.
As the Ambassador of the Super Giant Wrist Alliance I’m here to inform you that the SGWA turns it‘s nose up at this timepiece as outlined in article B of the Below 40mm act of 1956. Here Here!
As a member of the Medium Sized Wrist Fit and Awareness Association of North America. I can confidently say on behalf of the MSWFAANA that this watch is perfectly adequate for our members to wear.
@@Not-a-bot222 excuse me sir but I must insist on seeing your credentials. What group do you represent? I hope it's not one of these fringe splinter groups like the Hublot and Invicta United Front or something like that.
I have a theory. If you look at the original marine nationale Tudor submariners, all of their bezels have faded to a bluish gray. So while it may not be as obvious with the black variant, I think the sunburst bezel is going to give that faded effect with the blue (when they release it)
Great review Jenni! Am I the only one who noticed poor QC on that dial? There is a piece of lint painted on the second hand! Very visible in some real scale shots and undeniable under the macro.
Big Tudor fan; would love to see Tudor take advantage of Rolex’s discontinuation of the Submariner Hulk and add a green dial/green bezel Pelagos. Seems to me a relatively cheap proposition for Tudor since we’re only talking dial and bezel; no retooling of the manufacturing process. I’d be first in line, especially for a 39
I’m not a green fan. But that would be very popular- they should do it. Hope the next version isn’t the standard blue; Tudor needs to mix it up. White?
Good looking watch. I have the GMT and I don’t feel it makes me want another Tudor, time to move on. There are so many great watches out there. Thanks Jenni
I love the GMT, it was my go to watch but I just wish they’d slim it down to the 39mm case size. Got rid of it in favour of a Sea Dweller 4000, the ultimate Rolex sports watch IMHO- no date bubble, classic 40mm case size but with the added bonus of the modern solid link bracelet and machined clasp!
The bracelets really comfortable. Not sure why anyone would want it on the rubber. Ti is good with temperature and hypoallergenic, so the odd lug size doesn't bother me.
Nice to see this in 39mm, I like how Tudor made this made this more like a true tool watch than the 42mm, My daily wear watch for the past 7 years is a grade 2 titanium and although they do scratch a bit easier the brushed finish in the dark grey means the scratches a far less visible than if the watch were in stainless or grade 5 titanium. I'd really like to see someone do a comparison between this watch and the Black Bay 58 in Ceramic
I like the clean looks, and of course the light weight. The price is high for what amounts to a 3-hand watch, but if they come out with colored versions (blue, green) I will probably bite the bullet. (I have too many black dials as it is.)
Agree with you. That’s a big chunk of lume on that 2nd hand. I’d be handing it back to AD if I’d been given that watch. Very strange it got through quality control at Tudor.
I have the same issue with the hands, took it back to AD, sent for Tudor to repair (after 1 day of use). It is a shame, I have waited 1 year to purchase.
Did anyone else notice the blob of Lume paint on the second hand, where’s the quality control for these guys. Still is a beautiful watch. Thanks, Jenni😁
Thank you Jenni - Great macro shots. I think this watch would make a great watch if it is your only watch - but I agree I don't see where it fits in my collection
I think you're right , by having a broader appeal it's lost a lot of its identity and querks that make a Pelagos a Pelagos! It will hold great appeal to those that would love a sub , but either can't afford or get one. You're spot on! It's nice but somehow boring.
I was finally able to put the watch on my wrist this week and I am delighted to say it is near perfect. It does not compare to a Sub but it doesn’t need to. I have to say it is stunning and at this price point it is unbeatable. Wow!
Still prefer the warmth of the gilt, aluminium bezel and red triangle of the 58 OG.Being content with it has saved me a lot of money.Tried it on Tudor silk strap but missed the heft of the bracelet. Thanks for your review.
It's beautiful and amazing for those who seek titanium. People who like the look and feel of stainless won't hop ship to wear this though, it would need to be on another level of finish like the titanium Grand Seiko cases that don't even look like titanium with that polishing.
@@richardsims3847 Ive went off the gilt. Used to love the bb58 black but now prefer the blue colour way. I actually really really like this new palagos and it's probably the closest you'll ever get to a new Tudor sub. It's a lot more crisp and cleanly executed than the black bb58 and I prefer it. But i wouldn't be unhappy with any Tudor in any colour way, they're all good options. I might be more tempted with the new palagos if they release a blue one. I've had my eye on a blue bb58 but think things could change if they do a blue palagos 39. I really like the black but already have a planet ocean in black so black dialled diver is out of the question.
I must say, I really, really like the dull grey totally not-shiny finish of regular titanium. My first titanium watch was an el-cheapo Lorus and I've loved titanium ever since. This Tudor does titanium really well, I like it.
Exhibit piece looked so good; in person can’t wait for mine to arrive. Was just thinking about adding a Ti watch to the collection; Tudor delivers. Have a few 42mm watches but this is just perfect for my wrist.
Great review. The Tudor Pelagos is a nice watch, but as all Tudor watches it's a little bit rough. In my opinion it's difficult to compare Tudor to Rolex.
Both 42mm and 39mm Pelagos are Grade 2. Also, the clasp isn’t designed to be opened that way. Open it the way you open a Submariner’s clasp and you won’t have the issue you are having with the “glidelock” unlatching. Even a Submariner’s clasp would unlatch the glidelock if you open it that way.
Really glad Tudor is adding options for us small wristed but wish the just kept it the same as the 42, really lost a lot of the unique/cool factor with the changes, especially the rehault and bezel finish.
I got my Pelagos 39 a few weeks ago it's a fantastic watch to say I am happy is an understatement.I tried on the Pelagos 42 it felt too big on the wrist.I like the BB 58 but I can't get over those rivets plus they seem to have done too many versions to the point of diluting the watch in my opinion.
I just had a road trip from France to Italy. Almost all ADs have one on display but none available to buy. My local dealer in California said the waitlist is 40 ppl long :/
I think it looks so good, that it's all that matters. 200m WR is all that one needs and the proportions are superb. The lightness really appeals. Digressing, I reckon a Seiko SPB143 in Titanium would be the dogs! Looks, up there with this Pelagos and way cheaper.
@@chrish5503 But what is up with Tudors QC issues. Did you see that seconds hand??. Tudor s finishing is not that great. That second hand was embarrassing 🤦♂️for the price $. And I own the Seiko prospex SPB153 and it runs excellent and imop the Prospex SPB153 is cooler than the Tudor black bay 58 and it's more iconic 👌
Thanks for the responses, don’t get me wrong, this the grail for me, but attacks on Seiko seem to be the norm, these days and I have a SPB053 and the finishing is easily up there with seriously expensive marques and mine is only gaining 2 seconds per day. I’ve no gripe with any Seiko I’ve bought. Made a few quid on them, too.
I’ve been torn over the original and the 39. Having now tried on a 39, and loved how wearable and low profile it is compared to my black bay, and how it does at a glance have a sub look. But why pay £3500+ for that? I do keep coming back to the Pelagos 42 and think there’s a lot more going on for your money there. It looks like something special and different. And seeing as the 39 is now the hot new thing, maybe market values of old 42s will come down a little so I can get one. The only remaining problem is blue or black!
what is going on with the finishing of the seconds hand and the specs on the markers? surprised you didn't mention it. we are talking tudor right? looks really sloppy.
Is that a flaw on the second hand, or some odd design feature? It's very distracting, and unsettling if it's a mistake that wasn't caught by Tudor's quality inspection team.
nice one and thx for the video. Almost on the same page. BB Pro will still have my attention until Tudor offers a steel diver watch with all the new features (bracelet without rivets, T-fit, fully brushed case and smaller size) shown on Pelagos. For the time being BB Pro is an excellent choice and all that stuff on the case height/thickness is not that critical while wearing it (if you can have one from ADs).
A quick clarification: seemed like you said that the Pelagos titanium was softer. From redditt forums my understanding is that the titanium is very tougher, tougher than the oyster steel. That said, it scuffs easily (tiny scratches) but over time the oxidation "erases" these... one can also wipe the scratches away literally with an eraser. So very superficial. The clasp is where scratches happen, because the clasp is made from steel.
I’ve tried this on, I think it might have been just your example that the quick adjust would open when opening the clasp, didn’t have that issue at all.
I believe it's a fine watch: P.S. I'd love for you to produce a vid where you just say "Audemars Piquet" and "Vacheron Constantine" on a loop. I'm like Gomez Addams; you melt my heart when you speak French!
I visited my local Tudor AD in Melbourne, Australia last week. I tried on a couple of BB’s, then the 39mm Pelagos, but walked out with a 1926, 39mm with Opaline dial!🤣👍🏼
thanks for sharing. great shots ... ready for it one day, lukewarm for it the next... no idea atm ... availability... not in belgium, or they are messing with me. ps. that spec on the seconds hand would bother me silly tho :s
Here in Dubai, i am waiting for a Pro for more or less 6 months and for this they don’t even have an exibition piece to check Pelagos 39. I guess it differs from AD to AD but it is becoming a bit boring…
I hate to say this as someone who has a small wrist, but the sum of the design changes are to make the Pelagos 39 look like a downmarket Sub - Ti notwithstanding. Thanks for the review Jenni.
Another great video. I have a pure titanium watch, it's very soft. If this is actually grade 2 titanium, it will scratch and dent easily. Time will tell. And for Jenni, some English notes: 1) For measurements, units are countable; some corrected examples: 0:11 "it measures 40 millimetres", 1:24 "it's height is 12 millimetres", 2:05 "water resistant up to 200 metres", 3:01 "it only weighs 110 grams in total", 11:13 "it costs about 4110 euros". If the unit comes after what it's describing, + s. 2) And to confuse the rule from number 1, all adjectives in English are singular so when you said 1:47 "the 150 millimetre wrist circumference" it was👌 3) You can use lume as a verb and say 7:24 "the bezel is also lumed" as in 'Tudor lumed it', thanks Tudor.
Jenni, love the videos! Question- You mentioned that this Pelagos 39 is Grade 2 titanium and that the Pelagos 42 is grade 5? I have looked and looked and can find nothing that states the Pelagos 42 is grade 5 Titanium. Can we confirm this anywhere?? I do so hope it is grade 5!
Tudor themselves confirmed that the case and bracelet of the 42 is Grade 2 titanium, but that the trick clasp is Grade 5 titanium. There's a whole WUS thread on it if you go a bit deeper down the rabbit hole.
@@LuisM02 Seems you're right. The information I have seems to be about the buckle on the rubber strap. It was a screenshot from an Instagram-comment from the official Tudor account.
12:29 well, that's not really how they constructed the clasp to be opened, I would consider unhooking the bracelet that way a "hack" on the BB58 and maybe other Tudor models. To avoid your issue just open it the way it was designed by unhooking via the raised area under the shield logo after releasing the flip lock.
When you are speaking, & your tone and/or pitch changes as you speak, that transition is not being picked up clearly enough by the current mic/audio 🎤 🎙 setup. Other than that, no notes. Excellent review, as always!
Your close-ups always had me seeing that poorly coated second-hand with what looks like a hair in the coating - I can't believe that quality control missed that...
I never would change it over my 42mm black original Pelagos. I prefer the full stealth look I love the 3D rehaut I love having a date I love the pure tool proposition I even love the many text making it so distinct.
Honestly who cares about the marketing. I don’t think I’ve ever seen the marketing videos for any watch I own. I see your point on the clasp but I’ve never had an issue, he could just open the clasp from the front, most people do it that way anyway. Good review thanks!
Thanks for the review. I would have liked it to have a date complication as its 42mm counterpart. It would have been perfect. I support I will still wait.
great review, Jenni! If I didn’t have a Black Bay 58 already, this would be on top of my list. I really like the 39mm size and the square markers. Unfortunately it doesn’t feature a Date-Function, which would be super practical.
I own a Submariner from 2020. This Pelagos looks so similar and even in someways cooler with the sexy Red writing “PELAGOS”. I also like the bezel looks almost Grey, looks similar to a Yachtmaster. All in all a great offering. It’s only downfall for me is it’s Titanium, I find it too light and as such “feels cheaper”.
Would you recommend this watch over a submariner? I am trying to figure out what to do. I am a small guy and I was thinking the submariner would be to big for me. Do you think I should get this Tudor? Do you think it’s on par with a rolex sub? Thanks!
The clasp can be easily opened without pulling out the quick adjustment as there is no real need for opening it from the rear side. First of all you can open it like a Rolex from the front side. Alternatively you could use a pinch grip at the front side of the clasp. So this ‘issue‘ isn’t a real problem at all.
Love your videos Jenni, as an IBWC member myself I find your videos very relatable. I wonder though, is The IBWC a thing of your making or is it an actual committee...?
I have one, the titanium scratches very easy, I have desk dive marks all over the clasp from wearing it in bed... But you can take the scratches out with an INK rubber...
I love everything about this watch, especially the fact that it is boring. If this watch was a car I think it would be a black bmw m5.(business in the front, party in the back) There is something so attractive about a watch that looks good on almost anyone. Thank you
I always said a smaller Pelagos would be my perfect watch, but two things massively annoyed me about this release. Firstly no date, like the original 42 Pelagos, which makes this little more than a BB58 in a different shell, and more, a Pelagos 'lite' Secondly, Tudor/Rolex need to stop messing with the lug widths, like how they've done with the new Explorer, these are supposed to be 'tool watches' and therefore utility rich. Stick to the standard 18/20mm lug widths, not 19/21mm. I think this watch would look 'amazing' on a green nato, but where are you going to find a decent quality 21mm nato strap?? Would this stop me buying one... currently undecided.
I think you need to whinge to the makers of aftermarket straps, not Tudor or watch makers. 21mm is obviously a lug width that’s needed in watches. The P39 looks so much better with 21mm. It tapers too much though.
@@alfieakaronaldog If it tapers too much, surely therefore it would be better off with 20mm lug widths! And the reason why they want to use odd/difficult lug sizes, that aren't provided by aftermarker strap makers, is because these companies want to sell you their own massively overpriced straps, and bleed more money out of you.
@@tom1399 That obviously was not the solution I was thinking of 😂 It needs a wider clasp too! I really do not think watch manufacturers (Rolex and Grand Seiko to name two) design their watches around a possible sale of a strap. 20mm is often too small and 22mm too big.
Great camera work. I can’t wait to pick it up and start a rotation with my BB Pro. AD said a few weeks. Always wanted a Ti watch in my collection. And while it’s not a Sub, it’s available at MSRP unlike any R sport watches.
It looks like the monochromatic! The simplicity is the beauty. All of the Tudor models that are made of titanium are grade 2. Grand Seiko’s are grade5. Grade 2 doesn’t have an alloy and Grade 5 does. They’re both great. This watch is a winner.
A good revue and I agree with your dislikes. I have actually tried it on because the specification was just what I wanted. When I picked it up it was a big disappointment. It is very light and to me it felt cheap. The bracelet seemed to have sharp edges and I wasn’t a fan of the sun burst dial. The watch did nothing for me. I tried on the 58 while I was in the shop and it just felt like quality. That would be the one for me.
Clasp is sharp and uncomfartable, it also sticks up at the back and gets caught on clothing. A better quick adjustment is needed otherwise it was a fantastic watch. I had to sell mime due to the clasp sharpness irritating my wrist.
Compared to BB58 with gilt dial and the BB54, Pelagos 39 is incredibly dull looking. It has a flat crystal, shallow depth from crystal to dial, and an immaculate execution. But for a ceramic bezel insert, I'm used to seeing them polished, and this one looks rough, like it was 3D-printed. You can get the same sense of this P39 from the Red Bull special editions. Tudor's implementation of titanium is still a heavier watch than, say, Grand Seiko's SBGA413 ("cherry blossom"), or Citizen Chronomaster. The latter examples are feather-light in comparison. The reason this should be compared with BB54 and BB58 (with gilt dial) is that these BlackBays in particular, with rose gold gilting in the dial features and retro-style box-style crystals, have more style, more warmth, more distorted viewing and consequently more charm. All the same, Tudor does dull very well, so if you want a richer dial that gives you more to look at in the long run, there are other brands, for example, Norqain. Same movements, but more to see and feel.
I’ve owned both the LHD & blue Pelagos. Both fantastic “beater” watches and I loved the esthetic of the blue. Purchased the 39mm and it’s a game changer. The best daily wear if you’re looking for a normal size sports timepiece. I sold my Rolex (no date) submariner as it was superfluous and I enjoyed wearing the Ti Pelagos more. I have a Rolex SD 16600 & 116600 (not enamored with the cyclops) and a 39mm full lume Explorer. The knurling on the 39 is also better than the original 42.
I still think it’d be my pick of the dive-style watches from Tudor. Before it would have been the BB58 in black. But I think I like the simplicity of this new Pelagos.
I wanted to buy one, but of course, there was a waiting list. Then I got to thinking... Overpriced! So I bought something else. To be honest, I think Tudor is overhyped.
Yes! They're longines level competition. They're being hyped by these RU-vidrs. If u look at global market share. Longines placed number 5 with 5.6% market share. Just behind Rolex, Omega, Cartier, and AP. Tudor is 1.8% market share placing it at the bottom actually. Also they're all rolex look alikes!
I've had a submariner 2021 model. This Pelagos has better and clearer legibility. A very clean dial. Light weight titanium. I think a better watch. They should just change the name to Rolex and we have a successful watch.
