What you two have done is inspirational. I watch from a traditional English house in a Yorkshire village. Do you realise how you have taken so many of us on this journey with you, from all different homes all over the world? The fact you have have not let it hold you back, you have one child and are close to having another. So many of us wait for the ‘perfect time’, what you have shown is that you should just get on with it, no time is the ‘perfect time’, or maybe it’s just now. Hope the plastering, what you call mudding, is going well.

Just knowing that you're kids are going to get to grow up with this natural beauty all around them, is just awesome. No concrete jungle and inner-city problems for them. I grew up in northeast Texas in a rural area before going away to college in Southern California and I wouldn't have traded where I got to grow up for anything! I've been binge-watching all of your videos and what I loved seeing are all of the 'electrical storms' that you were able to capture during your filming! I've been living in Southern California for so long now that I had forgotten how beautiful and how often the electrical storms would come and go. I miss seeing them, so thank you for including them in your videos. You and your husband have done such an amazing job on building your home, believe me when I say "no builder would have put that much detail or effort into your home" -- and even if a tornado were to touch down close to you, your home isn't going anywhere, it will probably be the only one left standing afterward!

You folks are an amazing couple, never failing to endear the watchers with your trials and tribulations and mainly how you have overcome monumental obstacles that would have stymied many who are trying to do the same as you. BUT Makenzie, you have Spencer, who is a perfectionist and that is a very good thing. Plus you keep it light and humorous. We love to hear you laugh and "rib" Spence all the time. Unless you look at the front of the house and see the container doors, one would not even suspect that these were two containers at one time. That says volumes about your design and construction skills! You have transformed them into a very nice home. And he could not have done this without you, Makenzie. The secret is to spread the mud wider and very thin towards the outside edge or you will see ridges when you go to paint. Some of the narrow walls like the ones between two openings can be entirely plastered but thin. It's a skill and takes lots of time and practice. Oh, and be certain to prime it before painting, I know some new paint says paint and prime in one but it doesn't do as nice of a finish.

Looks good, the 12"trowel takes a little getting used too, but it looks like you've gotten used too that steel trowel. And skimming the entire walls with a thin coat, will cover the paper. Which is made of recycled materials, and that's why they use PVA acrylic sealer, to hide the sheen from the area's coated too the paper of the drywall. That also is called an imperfect smooth. With little areas where the trowel skips or chatters a little bit. Also you said you were having drying issues too fix that just get a couple of room fans too move the air around too speed up stubborn area. But you've got it. If your using stain grade trim, paint is next. If your using paint grade interior trim, caulking and fill nails then paint. Then cabinets Tile Flooring Fixtures and hardware. Finish plumbing. And appliances. And final inspection. ENJOY YOUR NEW HOME!👍☺ Your so close keep up the good work God bless amen.

The fact that you build everything yourself is why I watch your channel ( that and the fact that your family is so darned cute.) in the first place. I've seen other channels where as the channel grows and they get enough money to hire stuff out so they quit making content and just show the finished product. We can get that on any home reno channel. Keep doing what you do and I'll keep watching.

I spent 10 years remodeling and refurbishing my 1955 home. I learned the secret to dry wall. Use the green can which is the best, and put on a thin coat and be sure to clean up as you go along by smoothing the outer edges. Don't worry about you are not putting much on. IT IS MUCH EASIER TO PUT ON THAN IT IS TO SAND OFF. No sanding until the very end. It takes a LOT less time to put the mud on then it does to take it off. Once dried, you simply take your putty knife and scrape it down in between coats JUST to catch the little nubs. Because when you are applying more mud on subsequent coats a little nub turns into a little hill. Now the job flies. When I do get up to the sanding stages I use a 4" square pad sander. Makes the job fly. Then you apply your wider trough skim coats to super even it all out. A final hand sand is not a bad idea. Here is a tip for everybody. When you are dealing with plaster wall cracks in older buildings, forget about that whole tape idea. In a wood structure it is going to move, and no little tape is going to stop it. What I did was dig the crack out really well. Then blow out all of the dust, and fill the crack with Cover Stain oil-based primer. Let it dry overnight. What a transformation. You go from a dusty, and loose granular surface that nothing will stick to, to one that is now imbued into the powder with molten steel. Okay, it's oil primer but it makes for a solid block, that the mud can really get a grip on. I'm looking at what used to be a huge crack in the living room ceiling, and it has been 20 years, and no crack. Skip the tape it only gets in the way and you have to feather out two feet to try and hide it. This way you can easily get a perfectly even surface. I told this method to an old man who was a lifetime painter, and when I explained, his eyes got real big, and he said, "Oil based primer" and I said, "Yup" When they want to mine granite from the earth, they take these long drill bits and about every foot they drill, let's say a 1-inch wide hole down deep. Then they shove a 1" dowel of wood, a long rod down in there, and then they pour water on it. The force of the wood expanding is so great that a 1 or 2-, or 3-foot-wide and 10 foot long slab of granite breaks away and crashes to the floor of the quarry. You simply are not going to stop that kind of force by applying a little piece of paper, or tape over a loose-fitting joint filled with dusty surfaces and granulated edge material. Wooden substructures move with humidity changes with the seasons. By the way use Cover Stain oil-based primer when you are done mudding. Why? Because it dries so the next day you can work with it. You can sand it and it turns to powder. With water-based primers the next day all it does is clog the sandpaper. Oil based does have a strong odor so wear a carbon-based filtered mask, and wait until the next day, but then it is fine. At Home Depot they say we have a hard time keeping that stuff on the shelf. The seasoned contractors come in and buy it by the case. Love what you are doing. Beautiful job.

I agree, plus you don't need to sand after the first coat. Just scrape the high spots and ridges you left on the first coat. And go on. Pro's usually do 2 coats and then sand then do the touch up. The Kilted Guy on You Tube is the best place to learn if you have never done it before.

My Wife and I love watching your videos, and have been since the beginning. As a carpenter I am very impressed with the way you have worked through everything on your own to create such a beautiful product. I have lots of things I love to say as I am watching your Videos that I would love to share with you but I will keep them to myself as you are clearly able to figure things out in the end. I will say you were not using to much mud when you were in the closet, it just didn’t work out as well because mudding does take a trained touch to do it right. Save all of your sanding till the end, don’t do that awful job more times than you need to, it wont make it easier to sand in between, let your mud build up on each other to a smooth finish and then give it a light sand. You’re doing a great job! Keep it up ;)

Suggestion, precut wood trims for interior, or paint before cutting, prime & a paint two coats before installing inside. That way you won’t have to sand inside and just have to touch up nail holes which you can take as long as you like to do. If you paint two coats outside, you don’t have to cut in at walls which takes so long. Just one coat over front where nails are.

@@lindap.p.1337 I’m not thinking of Spencer on this subject. Since McKenzie has done most if not all the painting so far, I’m thinking of a mother with a new born and a baby living in an unfinished house with as little sanding dust as possible. And I’m also suggesting an easier way to do a job. Just because they want to do it all themselves, doesn’t mean they have to do everything the hard way. I’ve built 3 houses, not with my hands but I designed and oversaw all three, and doing everything that’s messy and dusty and dirty is better done outside if at all possible. It wouldn’t matter if there weren’t babies to consider more than likely living in the house before it’s finished. My painter did what I suggested here. It makes his job easier. I do this now when I have something to paint for inside the house.
