Everyone’s been asking why we haven’t started building the inside of the cabin! We are addressing why we can’t begin the inside cabin renovations/ build. The truth is it’s a long process to get there- this week we make BIG moves towards this goal. Excited to bring you along on the DIY journey to off grid water and electricity in the woods. Our Journey! How did we get here?
In the winter of 2019 we moved in to our self built van full time to begin living, working and travelling Canada. We quickly fell in love with chasing our dreams of adventuring off the beaten path, living off grid and being self sustaining. We drove our van thousands of miles through various countries-Canada, USA, Mexico & Guatemala. All of which we documented here on our channel, be sure to check that out! After many years on the open road we found ourselves 15 acres of remote woods on the East Coast of Canada where we are building a homestead and renovating our fully off the grid cabin. We are diving into this chapter of our lives in no experience, we're so happy we can bring you all along as we learn to do it all with our own two hands. We are actually heading out to explore NS this Thursday staying at mostly Harvest Host locations and National Parks for a couple of weeks. Thé quality of these videos keeps on getting better: editing, narrative structure, camera work, pacing,, characterization. Very entertaining. How you find time and energy to do both video and construction is a puzzle. Have you considered using the space underneath your solar panel array for wood storage for the pit? It’s often an overlooked space.

I was literally sitting here watching, eating my Gochujang Tofu with cilantro on top thinking, I wish I was there to help with the staining of the chairs when you said "painting is like cilantro, you either love it or hate it" and I love both. 😁 How have you two gathered so much stuff in such a short time of living there? That's a huge amount of equipment/tools/machinery/wood to move? Will be so worth it when you have electricity and can start working on making the cabin winter friendly. Can't wait to see more. As always….. inspirational! You two always seem to make hard work “fun”! I know your timeframe is weekly but the way you edit makes it seem like a “day in the life”. Glad to see the solar array is getting installed. One quick question though. Why not put the battery shed by the panels alongside of your driveway? It would probably save you hundreds of feet of wiring. Again, it’s tough for me to see the actual dimensions but going from the panels to place you are planning to build the shed then back to the house seems pretty long. Again, just a suggestion. Anyway, thanks so much for allowing me to share in your wonderful adventures and as always, be safe, be happy with much ❤️!

Thank you Bill! We love having you along for this journey- so grateful for our community and all the support. Yes this is definitely a week long video usually 2-4 days of shooting. The reason we’re putting the batteries in the garage on the other side is because the trees have already been cleared, the ground is better (the other side is quite wet) you’ll see more of that soon as we have to build up the solar array area with fill. Lastly easier access- closer to the garden/ cabin etc. As well as we will have water lines run there from the well. Great question. See you next Sunday 💛🐾

You ladies are always sooooo busy! It was good to see you taking some time to enjoy the solitude. The Adirondack chairs are a definite must-have “camp” vibe. We still have two chairs like that at our camp in Maine….since 1961! Also pleased to see you both wearing all the correct protective gear when you’re using that chainsaw! Nothing like a woman wearing a helmet and chaps! Fun, as always!

Way to go ladies!!!!!!!! Keep up that chainsawing and you'll both be Annette Schwarzenagers. Seriously though, we loved watching what you did this vlog. A tip if I may? You don't need to draw the chainsaw back and forth; it does nothing to contribute to the cut. Use the grip points on the saw end of the bar as a fulcrum point. Let them dig into the timber and lever the bar gently into the wood. It was great to see the demo of the shed too. You two walking hand is hand was special; we love how you are happy to show your affection for one another. Thank you for letting us enjoy the journey with you. If you haven't started installing outlets yet, note that you can't have too many outlets. Inevitably, you'll need one exactly where you haven't planned for it. Outlets are cheap and having bunches of them doesn't require a lot more wire than just having a few. Be sure to install at least one switched outlet in every room, other than the bathroom, that can be used for a lamp.

@@Vanwives: You're welcome. Think about possible expansion when you choose your service panel, as well. You're going to need deck lights/outlets, power to your shed, maybe an attic light, etc.. You don't need to install all of the outlets at the start but you don't want to have to upgrade the panel in the future. Fwiw, amazon Canada has some decent prices on service panels.

Not sure how far you are planning your lighting….. but you can never have enough lights in your kitchen area! Don’t underestimate that lighting! If you don’t need the extra lights don’t turn them on! Love your channel!

Ladies I just finished watching the episode about the hurricane and I lived in Florida for 30 years and the one advice I would give you is do not sleep underneath a glass window. Always make sure your glass window is covered with plywood and be way far from that because you know what would happen that glass would come in and shatter everywhere. But I love you guys and I can't wait for every episode!

I recommend getting a large magnet you can hang on a cord or string for times like dropping a bucket of nails or screws. My dad taught me that one

Go to your local lumber yard and get a couple step Stringers and the brackets to hang them. Hang them where you want on the deck and the put the cross boards for steps. The Stringers make it fast and easier. Good luck!

You should really get an airless sprayer. It’s faster and more fun than using a paint brush. You could also put a ramp up to your deck instead of stairs. Easier to make but also better for getting things on and off the deck. If you had ramps onto your porch you could get the firewood right to where you want to store it. Work smarter not harder😎
