While it may seem obvious that each painting is in fact a unique object complete with idiosyncratic issues and limitations, the process of conservation must reflect this. At each stage of a conservation there are multiple materials that can be used, various techniques employed, and the opportunity to deviate from otherwise rote norms to achieve a successful outcome. Often the question is asked "why this and not that" as sometimes the process can appear formulaic.
For this video as the conservation unfolds, the choices available to the conservator are explored and the rational given for why this choice was made and not that.

Overheard at Julian's house: - Are you going to cook dinner for the kids? They're hungry. -Well, I could simply heat up a frozen pizza, but I think that's lazy. Now, I could make my own pizza with packaged pizza dough, but that would be sloppy. I could make my own pizza dough with flour, but that would be nutritionally lacking. So I'm going to grow my own wheat and grind & process it on my heated table I built... -I'm calling Domino's.

My mother was a dressmaker in the 40s and taught me that the reverse of any hand sewing I did was as good as the front. She would turn a dress inside out and check the seams and zips etc before buying it. She would fully appreciate and approve of Julian's methods and techniques..

@@respectpotatoes she once gave a piece of cross stitch I had done to some one to look at and they were really impressed....then she turned it over and said...oh that's the back. The lady's jaw dropped. It also made framing the pieces easier as no lumps and no knots! Knots were a major no no!
@tomboy2980
@tomboy2980 3 года назад
@@skwervin1 That was always a struggle of mine when I began crossstitching, and even now. I jump around a bit and can sometimes knot the thread without realizing, causing bumps and a messy back, meanwhile my mom just has naturally organized backs on her cross stitched pieces and I don't know how. 😅 Maybe one day I'll be that good, but if it doesn't present an active issue upon the finishing of a project (ie a lump or knot so large its obvious upon being framed) then I'll attempt to fix it, otherwise I'll just move forward. Massive respect to anyone more meticulous than I.
@mwater_moon2865
@mwater_moon2865 3 года назад
@@skwervin1 see my gran was the opposite type, she drilled efficient use of materials into me, so while by back is very clean and the image supremely clear, (no knots! no dragging threads all over) to cross the back would have caused heart attacks. I relied on vert/hrzt stitches on the back, so whole rows at once with the drops the only place you'd see a diagonal.
@mwater_moon2865
@mwater_moon2865 3 года назад
@@tomboy2980 one way to avoid inadvertent knots is to drop your needle and let it dangle while it un/re-winds to let the thread reach the proper twist for itself. Spun threads have a twist and when we stitch it tends to get tighter (though on occasion it will come undone and the strands start to separate and unravel) and when you twist a thread too much, it will start to twist back onto itself which can lead to self knotting.

@Kat Harper Dearest fellow-art-lover. (Apologies to everyone else as I'm hijacking this comment thread). I am indeed NOT in the USA but in South Africa. We have our fair share of problems due to insanely high unemployment and poverty, with other epidemics like TB and Aids to contend with but for the most part, we are standing together as a nation. Wearing masks, social distancing in the 'middle and higher class' areas where it is possible. No Mask No Entry is what you see here in retail and everyone seems to be adhering to that at least. My heart goes out to everyone in the USA and I seem to be emotionally and psychologically invested in what goes on there. I cry for every life lost. I sympathise with every covid-survivor who deals with lasting physical effects. For a country that has to fight against injustice and tyranny while it mourns. Be safe. Be well.

I love that Julian puts so much care and detail into things that the average person would never notice. He could've let the canvas be bigger and overfill on the painting, but he scraped it down. He could've left the wood warped and saved the trouble of carving an extra piece out, but he evened it out. He could've left the keys unsanded, but he made sure they looked as clean as the rest of his work. Julian cares so much about his craft and it's such and amazing thing to watch him work on every little detail, even if no one but him and us viewers will ever see it

@BoudicaMara
@BoudicaMara 3 года назад
@@Alex-rw9nn I've seen you with this exact same reply, on multiple comments. Get off your passive aggressive high horse. Whoever did the previous work on this painting was sloppy, lazy, and disrespectful, not only to the owner of the painting, but to the artist who created the painting, and to their own image. It is an unkindness to allow that level of ridiculousness to go unaccounted for. If someone would have pointed out to the previous conservator that his or her work was subpar, it might have been 'unkind' at that moment, but the person might have learned from it, and tried to better themselves and their work. Constructive criticism is not an unkindness. Also, it would have been unkind for Julian to allow non-conservators, his audience, to believe that making a mess like that was 'just how someone else might do it', giving the impression that it was an acceptable way of operating. It is never acceptable to work at a subpar level, and then act like everything is fine. That's participation trophy mentality bring dragged into the workplace. Julian made all of those points obvious to his audience subtly, and without being unnecessarily rude. Yes, that is an enjoyable skill to behold!

@@BoudicaMara I believe I only commented it twice, but I hear you. I suppose mostly I am exhausted of the internet and others rewarding negative behavior, and maybe this wasn't the right comment for it, but I dislike the 'Yasss Julian roast them!!' Comments because i feel like they want him to be more sharp about every mistake that the previous conservator made, that instead of his calm explaining they want him to be mean, I know I totally said it wrong in my first comment, I should have taken the time to figure out how to articulate it right. I also feel like they might be misinterpreting what Julian means, because they exaggerate what he says. Maybe it's just my autism that is giving me a struggle. But in general I am tired of the world rewarding bad behavior, like people angrily pass me all the time, or tailgate me when I am driving the speed limit, I am made to feel bad for doing something good, and feel good if I do speed and therefore do something bad. I know it isn't a big deal, but its the most basic thing, and I feel like the same rings true for a lot of things where it is easy to do the right thing, people just blast past the right thing, because the wrong thing is easy too. I feel like with a lot of internet people we encourage them to be worse, we reward them for doing bad things, and then we are shocked when they do something truly horrible. So I guess I don't want julian to become like those people, influenced by the positive feedback for roasting someone (obviously he isnt roasting them now, but if this reinforcement continues..you get it) until he becomes unrecognizable. I hope I guess that its understandable now, and it's alright if you still loathe me and all. Love love, hope you are alright man.

That’s what it’s like in certain creative worlds. When you run your own business the client just thinks okay I want this thing done, but they never see the behind the scenes on how it go there. And that’s what Julian shows us. (Especially when he says about doing the extra work the client never asked for but will fix the painting and make it his quality work). I relate because I have a crochet business and my clients don’t see me having to start and restart the stuffed animal a number of times to make sure it’s correct they only see the finished piece.
@natfingerboard
@natfingerboard 3 года назад
I think all creative jobs are like that, people think it's just a creative mind and a tool, and you get the job done, but it's far, far from that simple. To be able to create a finished product that will give you a title to your career (artist, painter, art restorator, musician, producer, director) you must be able perform a lot of other tasks and come up with solutions on the spot to any problems that you might encouter, and those solutions almost always involve knowledge from other fields. I'm a producer, people might think, all you do is make music, but forget about all the creative aspects of it, and all the musical knowledge built from years of studying music. I have a studio, I planned and built that studio, I built the desk I use myself, to acomodate my work flow and the specific gear I use, which is ever evolving, and so is my studio, always evolving. Speaking of gear, I need to know the ins and outs of those gears not only to know exactly how they work, but to be able to repair them if it's needed. I need to know about computers, how to fix them, upgrade them. I need to understand a little bit of electricity, I need to know the ins and outs of how digital audio works, I need to know the physics of audio, be able to deal with a lot of different softwares and plug ins and understand exatcly how they work and what they do. And so on...
