Why We Chose LifeProof VInyl Plank Flooring and How We Installed It

We were sick of living with bare concrete floors in our garage apartment, so we decided to put down some flooring. Before getting it, we did some research on what would be best and decided on this LifeProof vinyl plank flooring and partnered with The Home Depot to get it installed in our home.
It was simple to put down and makes a HUGE difference in the feel of our home. A great improvement over bare concrete haha.
We chose this LifeProof flooring because:
1. It has a built in underlayment so we didn't have to install one
2. It floats and simply locks together so we didn't have to use nails or adhesives
3. It's waterproof and scratch resistant so it should stand up to me and the dog...even though we are both hot messes
4. We chose this Sterling Oak color so that it wouldn't clash with the warm wood tones in the rest of the house...but they have plenty of color options to chose from if you aren't a fan of the grey.
You can find the flooring at this aff link:
homedepot.sjv.i...
And the tutorial with details for how to install and the tools we used here:

Next time use the remaining vinyl plank boxes as weights for the first row, stack them on top of each other in order for the first row to remain within place while installing the second row...trust me I learned the hard way until a neighbor of mine gave me the hint on how the keep the first row in place, while installing my second row of vinyl planks. i also removed all of my baseboards, and made sure to leave 1/4 in gap throughout the perimeter of the flooring, then afterward I reinstalled them without any quarter round which ended up giving the baseboards and flooring a much cleaner look....compliments continue to come about the installation of our flooring....in-conclusion I did also installed moisture barer underlayment underneath the new flooring, due to previous flooring having white mold throughout the entire previous flooring when we removed it, which in turn caused a lot allergy issue for both my wife and I, even though both flooring stated very clearly on the box that they came with an attached moisture underlayment...I did't wanted to take another chance again, we also sprayed the entire first floor concrete with mold remover and let it dry completely prior to installation of the new flooring....You and I used the sameeeee exact same tools and brand...luvvvv rigid

Guy at home depot sold us on the lifeproof stuff as well, he did contracting and was being very honest comparing to other brands - superior in every way and doesnt require the underlayment and really does not show wear so we opted for it - brilliant cost saver right there. One caution in regards to the installation; make sure the surface being covered, be it concrete or wood, is as flat as possible. Installed this with a friend over an existing wood floor that we didn’t know wasn’t flat; it had subtle hills and valleys, like widespread swells on the ocean, that weren’t noticed until part way into the install. Given the flexibility of the new flooring, it made trying to align and click the planks together more difficult. We managed to finish the installation, but it took more than twice as long as comparative sized areas in her house. But I recommend LifeProof, and plan to use it in my own house.

I lived in California most of my life, but moved to Phoenix for a few years to be closer to my parents who retired there. My whole house was tile except the bedrooms which were carpeted. The carpet was always a challenge to keep up with two small dogs who were only semi-house trained, so I took out the carpet in my master bedroom and office which was the smallest bedroom, and replaced it with laminate myself which I loved, and only had one dog accident afterwards. I then moved back to a condo in San Diego which was completely upgraded with Life Proof laminate which looks great and is not as hard as the product I used in Arizona. My only complaint with Life Proof is that it has a softer more vinyl surface which scratches easier when you move furniture over it, and the surface itself is dull, but textured which makes it slightly harder to clean if your dog makes a #2 on it, and believe me my new floor is like a test bed for Life Proof. Overall it is a great product, and has more cushion give than most laminate products I have seen, but it has a softer surface which scratches easier.

I did this in our laundry room and it was easy to do. But at Home RenoVision Jeff makes a good case for using underlayment from Global Floorings. I installed over a floor of old peel and stick vinyl tiles. I tried to remove them but they were so difficult to remove that I replaced the one tile I did remove and just put the new floor on top of that. I did this about two years ago and it has held up well and looks beautiful. I choose the Sterling Oak as well but Home Depot did have a nice selection of colors.

Hi Gene, I watched Jeff' video too. I bought the Lifeproof vinyl plank flooring to put throughout a condo. The only reason that I am considering underlayment is add more soundproofing. But the Lifeproof information says that the warranty is valid only if you use their underlayment product! How has the Global Flooring underlayment worked out for you? Any problems with it?? Ok pro tip not so much with concert floor but with sub floor in your first row once it's down screw it in place for the rest of the floor make sure you do it as close to the edge so it will be covered up with the quarter round make sure at the end to remove those screws to allow for expansion.

Not if it’s more important to you to have them going long ways down a hallway, or perpendicular from a back door. Or if the length of the room across from the front door is considerable shorter than the length of the other two walls... perpendicular from the front door is a dumb rule to just blindly follow.

Did you have any dips and high spots on the concrete? I am doing my basement now and see some spots where there is a 1/4 inch dip. But mostly about half of that. If i put a 4 ft level on the floor i can slide a cardboard underneath in the middle. So now debating if i should ignore it and go ahead or use a floor self leveling mix which can be messy and time consuming. I became aware of the problem after i did almost half the room and noticed that when i bounce a tennis ball on the floor some places the ball does not come up and stays low. Then i realized it was where the level was off. I was using a similar LVP product with built in underlayment padding. May be after sometime with weight on it and walking on it the vinyl conforms to the contour better.
@WoodshopDiaries
@WoodshopDiaries 3 года назад
Our concrete was far from perfect. The instructions say to fill in low spots and remove high spots-just like with any flooring installs. But, we took our chances and installed it without doing anything to these spots. So far, we have no issues with the flooring itself separating or anything. But when you walk on these spots, it sounds somewhat hollow. Technically you are supposed to level it.

@WoodshopDiaries
@WoodshopDiaries 4 года назад
The instructions that come with the flooring should tell you. From my understanding, you’re supposed to leave 1/4” gap between the perimeter and any stationary surface you butt up to (toe kicks on cabinets, vanities, any stationary objects). But always follow the instructions that come with the flooring.

@@felicia5620 you need spacing for the changing of seasons. In the summer it gets warmer and humidity rises. It will expend every so slightly so you don't want it to end up bubbling. Vinyl is great! @@felicia5620 Not all vinyl is the same as the Lifeproof. Believe me I did my kitchen and liked it so well we pulled up all the carpet in the rest of the house and went with this . Did you have any issues with the interlock part breaking? I have worked with two other brands, and the interlock part of the planks were super easy to crack. I had to be very careful laying them because once that breaks, it’s impossible to get the planks to lock together. It was very frustrating.
@WoodshopDiaries

I’ve seen some comments on this video that other people had issues (of course, with random comments, you never know if they were actually using the same stuff I was 🤷‍♀️) but personally I didn’t have issue with installing it. I was impressed with how easy it was to put together. And I’m never careful with anything haha.

@WoodshopDiaries

They don’t “bounce” if that’s what you mean....unless your floor is uneven. If you lay it on uneven floor and there’s a void underneath, they can flex.

looking to do this in our home soon, so great timing! Question, does your floor seem pretty flat? i know there are comments about uneven flooring issues when laying it. i havent seen the slab that ours will go on, it still has carpet, but im concerned with it being a little wavy. thanks for the video!
@WoodshopDiaries
@WoodshopDiaries 4 года назад
Keasbeysknight awesome! So the instructions said that the floor should be +/- 1/4” over a ten foot span. I didn’t measure, but I know our concrete is really unlevel. I’m definitely sure it’s beyond that range. So I was honestly concerned about this as well, but laid it anyway and it hasn’t given us any issues. They laid down fine and so far (it’s been a few weeks of running/walking/abusing it) and I haven’t seen any separation or bowing anywhere. And it doesn’t feel weird anywhere walking on it. We’ve almost always laid floor when the flatness was beyond the suggested range and so far no issues in the old house with other types of flooring or in the new house with this one.

Were there any dips in the concrete? Was it leveled before installing the floor? If there were dips, how has the floor performed over the dips? I have concrete floors also. Just wondering thanks.
@WoodshopDiaries

Our concrete was definitely not perfect and we didn’t bother leveling it. We’ve had zero issues in the last year we’ve had it. It’s not separating or bubbling up. It’s just like the day we put it down (just with more dog hair because I need to vacuum 😂😂). Hope that helps. I would 100% use this stuff again for what it’s worth.

Hi! You just cut the last piece of the first row to fit, then use what’s left to start a new row, or just cut a piece in half or thirds, whatever. It doesn’t have to be exact, the seams just need to be 6” or more apart row to row.

Was your floor completely level? I wanted to install laminate plank in our kitchen but I have a feeling when I remove the worn and chipped linoleum, it's not going to be level.
@WoodshopDiaries
@WoodshopDiaries 3 года назад
It was definitely not completely level. To be honest, the contractor who did the concrete did a pretty crummy job. We laid it anyway and there are a few spots in the floor where we notice it “gives” a little when you step on it because it wasn’t level, but we’ve not had any issues result from it. I love the floor and I’d definitely install it again. But if I did, I’d probably use some concrete leveling compound or simply install a foam type underlayment just to kind of “fill in” the uneven-ness.
