WHY WE CHOSE THIS TRAVEL RIG (Wolf Creek 840)

We get so many questions about our rig and why we went with the slide-in truck camper, why this specific model, and what we haul it with.
So, Richie and I went back through our "must have" list that guided us as we were shopping around and are sharing that with you now.
Ultimately, we have learned that there is no one-size-fits-all travel rig, and we have finally found what works best for us after lots of trial and error.
Hopefully this helps you decide what's important for you in a travel rig, whether it be for weekend trips or full-time life on the road!

Welcome to our channel!
We are Ashley and Richie, and we’ve been traveling together since we started our relationship back in early 2020. And before then? We were still adventuring on our own, actually in some of the same places around the country at the exact same time, before we ever even met!
Our first trip together was buying a 40-year-old Toyota motorhome in Anchorage, Alaska and driving it to the Arctic Ocean after Covid canceled our Africa trip.
People have been telling us for years that we should start vlogging our adventures, and now that we are engaged and soon-to-be married in…yep…AFRICA…it’s reason enough to begin documenting our travels.
Full-time travel is not always easy, or even fun. Sometimes it’s downright hard. But it is the life we choose to live, and hopefully our journey will inspire, encourage, maybe even entertain you.
And Taho the dog?
He was an unintentional addition to our plans. He came crashing into our lives on 4th of July when he was hit by a Chevy…Tahoe. No major damage, but he had no collar or identification and was in terrible shape. After several attempts to locate a potential owner to no avail, we switched gears to focus on getting him healthy and finding him a loving home. Less than a week later, he had one:
Us.
He seems too small to have such a big heart, but Taho is our best travel buddy; he loves life on the road as much as we do and is a constant source of joy for his many friends.

Actually, the Artic Fox and Wolf Creek are like Chevy and GMC. Same materials and equipment on both. I did extensive research before I purchased a new 2021 Wolf Creek 840 and other than the layout, they are exactly the same. I have lived and traveled in mine full time for 1 1/2 years now and I still love it. Mine has the couch, microwave and oven but opted to not have the propane sucking, loud generator which it is still wired and plumed for so that I can have the extra storage. I, also, have an outside shower. Mine is four season rated and I have used it in single digit temperatures and it has worked flawlessly. Northwoods manufacturing is an excellent company and they stand behind their product. My water pump went out this past summer and leaked in the underneath area after I was out of warranty and they not only replaced the water pump, they removed the bottom of the camper and fixed all of the water damage free of charge. You made an excellent choice in my opinion and I hope you enjoy it for many years to come. I carry mine on a 2021 Ford F250 6'10" bed and it handles it very well.

Hey Eric! Yes, we noticed the newer model layouts are all the same. We love that! If it's not broken, don't fix it, right? It's reassuring for us because if we ever decided to upgrade to a newer rig, we don't have to search far and wide for specific years to keep our same layout. We have an option for a microwave, but decided against it due to being off grid for the majority of our travels. We wanted the storage space instead. Not familiar with the generator, it must be a newer model option - ours is a 2014. We agree with you on that though, would rather have the storage. Especially with the factory installed solar. Wow, that is some fabulous customer service! We have had pleasant experiences as well, but never needed anything so major as that. good to know they stand behind their products so steadfastly. You have a short bed truck also, we had such a difficult time before purchasing to determine if the COG would work on our truck. But yes, we've had zero issues, it handles very well, even packed to the gills. I might do another video on this. Thanks for your comment, and maybe we will see you out there on the road! Happy travels!

@@WorldBrilliant I agree, I think it is the best layout but unfortunately, 2021 is the last year they made the 840. I'm not sure why they discontinued it because I think it is a better layout than it's sister layout of the 850 which they still make. Safe travels and enjoy your rig.

I bought a slightly used 2020 Wolf Creek last year, and I love it! My late husband and I pulled a 34 ft 5th wheel with an F350 dually until we got a lease at an rv park. Then we got a 22 ft trailer for our travels that was easier to pull and park. I never learned how to back up a trailer, that was his job ... and at 70 yrs old, I was not even going to try. But, I wasn't about to give up camping. Well, my Wolf Creek fits perfectly in my short box dually. I got it for the same reasons you did .... no slides, large counter, etc (you didn't mention the decent sized holding tanks)... absolutely love it.

Hey @CoraWheeler, it's great to hear about your experience with the Wolf Creek! It's such a fabulous rig...we live in ours full-time now while we rent our house to fund our travels. And several months in, we are surprised to find we are still perfectly comfortable, and even miss it while we are away! 70 and solo camping, you are my hero! So glad you didn't give it up, keep enjoying life to the fullest! Maybe we'll see you out there!

Hi Robert, We looked at an Arctic Fox 1150 that was pricier than the Wolf Creek and was worn in considerably more. The arctic fox can weigh up to 2000lbs more depending on the model which may call for a dually/diesel. But, it's much more insulated if winter camping is your thing and comes with a few upgrades like a generator, microwave, and outside shower/water access. Cheers, Richie

@@richbanton2205 Thanks for the reply, I'm planning on either a 3/4 or 1 ton single rear wheel set up as the truck will be my daily drive when I'm not out on the road. Driving a dually around town might be a bit much. So, the 1150 might be too much camper for that set up. I'll figure it all out eventually, I would like a generator though and some accommodation for cold weather! Hopefully, it'll be the desert southwest but it can get kinda cold at night, probably nothing to worry about though. It was 8 degrees here in Rhode Island this week 🌵 Don't think there were to many folks truck camping although, the campgrounds still have residents ... 🌻

Hey Michael! We can't say enough good things about this camper. The last three days we've been boondocking in temperatures as low as 8 degrees F with 25mph winds, and it's been perfectly cozy inside our little home. No frozen pipes with the heat cranked up or any other issues. That, to me, was the real test. And it passed with flying colors. Let us know if you have any questions!

Nice setup. I've had a truck and camper combo for 30 years now, and wouldn't want anything else. My current rig is a GMC dually and Bigfoot camper. The Bigfoot has a floor plan nearly identical to yours, and it's been great. I really like the 180 degree view from the dinette. My list was nearly identical to yours when I upgraded from my previous camper. The Arctic Fox/Wolf Creek lines are good products. Happy camping!

I bought this exact camper from a neighbor 1 yr ago. It is a 2016 model that was garaged. Your review is spot on. An excellent camper for extended 3 season camping. The only repair was the plastic outside exhaust vent above the stove. I discovered a second vent latch located under the vent next to the motor. Even the former owner did not know the “secret” latch existed. I added an 8 inch computer fan to the refrigerator vent door that helps immensely in the hot weather. Thanks for an excellent video……
@WorldBrilliant
@WorldBrilliant Год назад
Thanks for the tip, we're going to check for that second vent latch on ours! We've had very few minor repairs, which is impressive considering we have lived in it 8 months already. Extreme climates, off-road trips. One repair was actually to the refrigerator...hmm. I might need to look into your fan suggestion. Planning a few small upgrades to accommodate our lifestyle, but overall we have a super great camper!!! Happy to meet another Wolf Creek owner!!!

Get high quality sealent like tremco dynomic, use painters tape to prepare joints, apply seslent, dry tool, pull tape, wet tool with 50/50 water and soap, and done. The issue with most used campers is leaking water damage. Dont buy cheapest sealeng at home depot. High quality sealent is $$$ maybe 10 dollars per tube but better to spend the money on quality durable stuff that will last not crack.

You dont find it important to access the car without going out, especially when you feel in danger outside?
@WorldBrilliant
@WorldBrilliant Год назад
Hey Marvin, great question! So that was the one thing we miss about our motorhome that we do not have with this rig. To be perfectly honest, we have never parked anywhere that we felt too unsafe to go outside. With one exception, and that was bear and mosquito country north of the Arctic Circle in Alaska. It IS really nice to be able to access the fridge for snacks/beverages without having to stop (but I guess that only counts if there is a second person in the vehicle with you), or as a passenger to be able to use the bathroom while stuck in traffic. (Flashing back to Yellowstone on Labor Day weekend - oops- took us 7 hours to exit the park. That passthrough was a lifesaver!) However, we find it equally as beneficial (if not more so) as a couple to be able to separate the vehicle from our "house". I think this has saved our relationship on the road. Richie can take the truck, while I can work on editing videos in the rig and he is not disturbing me, and I don't have to be bouncing along because he needed something at the hardware store, etc. If no passthrough is a dealbreaker for you, modifications can be made to the camper and the truck by replacing the rear truck window, and the cabview window on the camper so they open enough to crawl through. Some model campers have windows designed to do this, but our on the Wolf Creek 840 is too small. We may do this modification in the future, but right now we have not needed or missed the passthrough. I hope this helps!!

Nice set up with the truck. Few questions. I have the same truck with the duramax and you are. Very lined by weight for GVWR. I am sure with the big block it’s very similar. What’s the weight of the camper? You said you have airbags. What PSI do you keep them at? I see you still the factory 16” rims. What is the weight rating for each? What type of sway do you have with semis passing you on the freeway ? These trucks were limited to 9200 GCWR and putting a camper in them is a nightmare without major upgrades. I have a 3000lb camper that sways when passed by semis. No problem up and down mountains. So far airbags, hellwig front and rear sway bars, helper springs and 19.5 rims with 4000lb weight ratings has not solved everything’s Any thoughts on what yr doing would be helpful
@WorldBrilliant
@WorldBrilliant Год назад
Hi Super Star, great questions for Richie. His response is: Dry weight is 1,992 lbs+ 35gallons of fresh water (when full) usually which adds 280lbs totalling 2272lbs not including any of my clothes, camera equipment, and shoes or Richie's tools. Our camper is around 3000lbs when loaded, maybe a little less. We run 55lbs of air in the airbags. He tried 70lbs but it was a little bouncy. We run 70lbs in the rear tires and 55 in the front. He stays between 60-70mph on the highway which is usually at or under 2200rpms however it still sucks fuel with the 496ci big block and we only get about 8mpg because of the height of the camper. We get 11-13mpg without the camper on the truck. We don't get much sway compared to other rigs he's driven however it does seem a little top heavy around corners and he's very careful and calculated when pulling out or taking turns. The truck has plenty of power for this rig and we don't know it's back there when just driving straight. The GAWR for the rear is 6084lbs And the front is 4670lbs. Barring anything breaking, we do not intend to do any other up grades. He loves this setup and rig for 2 people. He did say he would have a smaller rig if he were by himself. We hope this helps and sure hope you are able to dial everything down and enjoy your rig to it's fullest potential! It sure is a lot of fun!

My last truck was a 3500 hauling a 9.5 ft. camper that was also around 3000 lbs. I added air bags, which leveled it, but still wasn't pleased with the ride and handling. After dealing with this for 25 years, I moved up to a dually (and larger camper), and the difference in handling is night and day. No modifications needed, and it's a pleasure to drive. The high center of gravity is a challenge for single rear wheel trucks.
@SuperStar-nz5xy
@SuperStar-nz5xy Год назад
Thanks so much. Appreciate the help. I added hellwig big swaybars in front and back and that made a huge improvement. Chevy has a cheap hollow one up front and nothing in the rear! Also added the helper springs lp35 and these absolutely helped. Good luck and see you on the road!

What is your average gas mileage? I have been researching different rv's and there is a lot of conflicting info. Do you know your truck mpg with and without the camper?
@WorldBrilliant
@WorldBrilliant Год назад
Hey LC, yes our fuel mileage is very poor. That is the drawback. We get about 12 without, and 10 with the camper on. We chose gas over diesel due to high diesel prices, higher purchase price of a diesel truck, and they're more complicated/expensive to fix if the need ever arises to do so.
