In the 試し斬り Tameshigiri cutting training with katana, it is most common today to cut the surfaces of tatami mats called ござ Goza. These rolled up mats are soaked in water for a few days to make them easier to cut.
But why do we cut tatami mats in the first place?
The term 試し斬り Tameshigiri literally means “test cutting” and it was originally an act of checking the sharpness of the katana.
In the past when samurai still existed, Tameshigiri was actually performed on the dead bodies of criminals. By this, a katana was graded by how many bodies it could cut through with one swing. By the way, the sharpest tested katana is believed to have cut through 7 bodies at once.
However as time passed by, they started to cut bundled straw (straw post) and bamboo more often, which was cut by street performers with katana.
However, straw posts and bamboo were both a little inconvenient. Straw posts tend to scatter and make a mess after cutting, and bamboo is very firm so that a beginner can easily damage the katana.
Cutting rolled up and soaked tatami mat surfaces was invented to make up for the shortcomings of the two. This was especially possible thanks to the production of tatami mats becoming abundant in the modern era, which used to be a very expensive kind of flooring.
By the way, we still cut straw posts and bamboo sometimes too for different purposes of training.

Actually, one thing that we do understand from old writings that the criminals were usually not dead before being used to test the katana. Can you talk about the steel traditions of ancient smiths? Its the only thing ive wondered but you havent told me. All i know is that japan historically had either too little or poor quality iron and couldnt make proper steel which is why the katana looks like that at all. How an ancient smith figured out steel folding is crazy too. Thank you so much 😊
@johnnydjiurkopff
@johnnydjiurkopff 2 года назад
It wasn't so much they couldn't make proper steel, it was just that the iron they used had a lot of impurites so it necessitated the folding of the steel to force out the slag. Once the steel was folded and the impurites removed though, it was roughly equivalent to most other steel at the time. The differential hardening is just because the smiths at the time figured it's easier to hammer a bent sword back into shape than completely reforge a broken sword, so they made swords that would bend before the would break as compared to european weapons which were more springy because they were fully tempered but also would break rather than deforming.
@jonajo9757
@jonajo9757 2 года назад
@@johnnydjiurkopff Japan's iron sources weren't bad to begin with, and just to make it brief, but to clarify, realize that a European blade with springy properties only comprised a minority of swords in Europe during the late middle ages. The majority of European blades at the time used a similar means of construction that involved laminating such as having carbon steel edges in an iron core. This means it would deform still since structures using an iron core take a set. That of course, is preferable than having your sword shatter mid combat. To add, katanas did shatter in cases, *but* this only implied to later period blades that were designed for artistic value in mind. One of these features such as a wide hamon were detrimental to the structural integrity to a blade, and there are plenty of accounts of this. (Alr last min note but folding steel was just an essential process in steel making back then. Europe did it too)
