Starting strength gym member here and while it is true you can adapt to increasing the weight you life over time with proper progressive overload, it is ALSO true that you can train your cardiovascular system to adapt to increasing stress and improve endurance, enhancing both your fat oxidation level and VO2 max.. The same principles apply. That Rippetoe simply refuses to recognize this is one of the reasons he is a dogmatic prick. But hey, love you man!!!

Eh? I've built 30 lbs with sets of 3 and 5. The range for hypertrophy is between 4 and 20 reps with 6-12 being optimal. But Rip's deal is trying to build STRENGTH in the fundamental movement patterns. Hypertrophy is simply a consequence of improved strength.

If strength is the be all end all, then over weight strongmen and powerlifters would be the grestest athletes on the planet, right? Strength is important, but so is mobility and cardiovascular health. I deadlift, I squat, I bemch and overhead press. But just going heavy on those lifts isnt the only thing you need to do. And saying grandma is weaker than the grandson because she doesn't lift heavy is ridiculous. There is a lot more to it than drinking milk and deadlifting. Come on

Powerlifters are athletes. I wouldnt't expect a powerlifter to be a goos runner just as I don't expect a runner to lift as heavy.

@axnoro3776 I agree powerlifters are athletes. I never said they weren't. I just said there is more to being in good shape than just lifting heavy. Strength is important, but its not the only thing that's important.
