There was VORTEXX... but that died in 2014... if I had to guess, I'd say that it's because kids these days don't wake up to watch cartoons on Saturday anymore, and when they do want to, they've got Netflix and Hulu, or they have parents who can afford channels like Disney XD. In the information age with RU-vid and memes and the ease of internet access, there's too many things fighting for control of a little kid's eyes for a Saturday morning to fight.

Not all the new theme songs were bad.i particularly like onepiece and Magical Doremi more in the 4kids version. Some of the censorshipis also quite funny, like sanji's lollipop. I much prefer it to smoking, not because smoking is bad, but because a lollipop feels more true to the weirdness of the show. For magical Doremi I just hate all the Japanese voices. They are unnaturally high pitched and the 4kids spells are more creatice because they rhyme each spell making wach spell unique rather then just say a generic magic phrase over and over. Basically, 4kids was actually really good considering no foreign cartoon had really been brought to America before. It could have been done way way worse or never done at all. Its so sad nobody gives them any credit for what they did right.

for me, I could never stand the majority of the voice acting in the yugioh dub, especially the yugioh GX dub, oh god. To be fair though, the voice acting in 5d's was decent at best.

The voice actor Jason Griffith who voiced sonic from sonic x and the video games is definitely the most memorable one but to be honest his voice wasn’t all that great in sonic x he tried hard to sound like the Dreamcast era voices but however in later games especially sonic unleashed he gotten better voice acting. And about sonic x sure it’s one of the most popular 4kids show at the time. But to be fair while sonic x not the worst one. I didn’t really liked it at all. Here’s why I did not like sonic x: The stories are bland and boring and are most filler episodes(like the baseball episode or the episode we’re sonic friends were trying to get the device from sonic’s ear and they were trying to get it out. The humans were pointless and useless and boring to say the least especially chris(which he taken over the main characters spotlight. The majority of the voices(with the exception of Eggman) completely sucks in that show but the majority of the voices gotten better in the games. But in season 3 however it gotten better but it’s still mediocre. In the end sonic x could’ve been a decent sonic cartoon but thanks to 4kids butchered it, pointless filler and bland episodes, useless human characters. Sonic x was terrible it could’ve been another good one I’m sorry sonic x fans I know u loved that show bu sonic x is definitely a show u want to pass up and go see the other good sonic shows. If u want a better video game anime by 4kids go watch Kirby right back at ya instead.

Finally a good rational comment! Everyone is bashing on the censorship without considering that maybe 4kids was forced to censor in order to broadcast. Sort of like in the earlier ages of gaming history (in the west), after gory titles like mortal kombat hit the shelf, regulations surrounding rating systems and censorship were developed that only allowed publication for games that adhered to the appropriate guidelines. Maybe it's a similar case for broadcasting on television. So while Americanizing absolutely everything seems stupid, a case could be made that 4kids was forced to censor out violence/gore according to network regulations or else they would never be allowed to air it, and we therefore would not have grew up watching pokemon/yugioh/dragonball z as kids.

I didn't really mind the censoring, until they touched stuff like one piece. The way they censored my favorite anime, to the extent that they even skipped various arcs is what pissed me off. In various shows like sonic and pokemon, yeah the censoring makes sense. It can easily be adapted to a kids show. Even yugioh, with its slightly annoying censoring made sense since it was a card game anime. Animes and shows like these that are generally okay for kids to watch is one thing, but them censoring anime that should, by all rights, be T rated, both confused and aggravated me. And I'm not just talking about one piece here. The way they censored dbz was, half the time, more offensive than the original story. At least the few major edits that shaman king had were more confusing than offensive... And before anybody says otherwise, i understand that they received the rights to the more mature anime (in comparison) like one piece, dbz, shaman king, etc. via a large bundle, but if they are going to adapt them, they could at least do the stories justice. Perhaps have the more mature anime less censored, but also released at a different time block, along with warnings if need be. A few slight adjustments and 70% of the complaints would never have surfaced.

Some of them like One Piece weren't ones that they were particularly interested in dubbing or localizing, but they were contractually obligated to since they often acquired licenses through "bundles" (for lack of a better term). IIRC, One Piece was part of a licensing deal that came with a few other Toei series.

Even then they would had ruined them, for example if they got the first Minky Momo series then a lot of things like Momo's Panty Shots and Transformations would be censored and we would not know that Momo lives with a Veterinarian. Episode 46 would had her banished to the dark world. Many Anime fans at that stage would agree that Harmony Gold treated it more fairly despite that their dub of Minky Momo had only aired in Australia and Malaysia as "The Magical World of Gigi" Would be harder for them to dub Pelsia the Magic Fairy as well because they don't want kids to know that countries other than the United States exist and Pelsia comes from Africa.

Stuff like Doraemon, Shin-chan and more old 90's anime would've fit 4K!DS perfectly.

Maybe some older people, 4Kids hasn't dubbed anything popular in like 15 years so there's pretty much a whole new generation of anime fans out there now that didn't have to put up with insane censorship. Also, It's not hard to just list off some mature animes to someone if they think it's all kids stuff. That said, I do think 4Kids is part of the reason there was such a debate around sub vs dub as I don't consider most 4Kids dubs watchable. Only some stuff like Pokemon was okay which wasn't that edited.

BiXDus Nutzakk something I've always found odd is the fact that Pokémon characters in English fanfics are nearly always referred to by their dub names, whereas Yugioh fan fiction more often than not uses the Japanese names or the English names exclusively

Yu-Gi-Oh! on the other hand, is a completely different show if you watch it subbed. Yu-Gi-Oh! GX especially. Watch it subbed and I assure you, you won't even recognize it. Note that this isn't a bad thing. I personally feel that the English Dub for GX really was a kid's show while the Japanese was aimed more at the teen and adult demographic.

WITCH NEKO It's because we can compare it to the original that we hate it. Sure, the 4kids version is okay if you don't know any better. Gruel tastes good too, if you've never tasted anything else. Ignorance is bliss, but once you've seen Yugioh uncensored and heard the original Japanese soundtrack, it's hard to go back to the edited version. One Piece was an exception to that rule though. I hated One Piece and never really gave it another chance until I played one of the games, which led me to watching the sub on Crunchyroll. Did you actually praise 4kids actors? I dunno, Dan Green was good, and whoever it was that voiced Kaiba, maybe Anzu's\Tea's actress as well, but that's about it.

Michael Robertson Ive went back to the series when I learnt about the censorship, the internet provided me the whole content which made me love the series even more. At any case, I like both of which 4kids and the uncensored versions in the internet. It wasn't a gruel nor was it tasty. If the show got me into liking it then im on board with the ride, if there was something missing (censored) from it then it also makes me wanna rewatch it again. 4kids may have censored the animes they released but once you knew what they have censored, it just makes you wanna venture again back to back to see the anime. This made me love Yu-gi-oh! more to say the least. Edit: Typo

I'm sure another company would've brought those anime over eventually. The fact remains, 4Kids censored the anime they brought over, which completely earns them all the hate they get, and then some. Censorship is never okay and there's nothing that can redeem it.

Mayo Rice True, they censored the animes. But after learning they were censored, it just made me want more of the action I watched. Though after learning what they have done, I did started to hate them, but I still thank them for bringing me those animes to start cause after learning they were censored, it was like a happy marathon for me to watch the animes again but of course uncensored.

How did they censor your childhood? Sure 4Kids anime dubs were controversial among anime fans for their censorship and Americanization, but they were a staple in many 90's and 2000's childhoods.

It also didn't help that the Japanese companies who own those titles encouraged the censoring. Though I still believe DIC screwed up bad with Saint Seiya.

Because 4Kids has a name; they're basically the face we see that represents those decisions, whether or not they were ones they wanted to make. The ones who were pulling the string are the definition of a faceless corporation, it's hard to direct vitriol at something so formless.

We *can* blame them for even bidding on the rights to some of these shows in the first place. They went for One Piece without really knowing what they'd have to do to it.

I honestly don't see the problem, making the programs child friendly gave kids the opportunity to actually view something so different. A lot of these programs were pretty child friendly anyway.

If 4kids didn't exist they would've probably been licensed by some other company that didn't needlessly butcher the anime they handled, 4kids weren't the only ones adapting anime for kids they simply got lucky, by getting the best licenses(monopolies over anime) of the time. As you said most of these anime were pretty child friendly anyway.

Without 4kids and other similar dubbing companies selling these 'butchered' products through the airwaves nobody would know what they were.
