#AllSkullsMatter Oppression of background skulls is rampant in today's society, donate 1 skeleton related item to the Chinese Government today, we will defeat this cruel injustice!
In World of Warcraft, the developers were too lazy to replace every skull and bone and instead, they decided to replace it with bread. This ends up with a lot of areas in WoW with lots of skulls and bones to be littered with bread.
In WoW they seemed to let a lot slide or just didnt notice either.. Like the "Path of Victory" in Outland is a road made purely of the bones of fallen Draenei and you can clearly see skulls and other things but that was left in amonst countless other similar things.
You can sell Dog Meat on the street if you want to.... I mean PETA is mostly known for murdering domesticated Dogs and Cats by the thousands all the time. What's worse really?
Unless you consider reverse psychology. If you're told not to watch a movie, doesn't that make you want to watch it even more? Then some kid pirates the movie, expecting something (insert adjective), and gets shut down even harder.
A thought regarding the skeletons that were left uncensored: Could it be that "dead" skeletons are left alone, because they're just dead bodies, but that "living" skeletons are removed because like vampires, zombies and mummies, they're figments of human superstition and legend?
Mattias Bengtsson that does bring up a good point, and here I was thinking that the Chinese where just being babies about this whole undead thing. (No offense to any Chinese people)
+Aoi Akuma Don't worry, it's pretty clear you just mean the Chinese media watchdogs, most likely there are plenty of normal Chinese folks rolling their eyes at this rule.
Fun fact about those Wizard101 models on 2:39. They are both models for mounts. Both mount designs (and colors) are shown in the Western version. These aren't censored versions. Same goes for the Zebra models as well. Another fun fact: the skeletal Zebra Warrior is also the same model used for the Death Spell; Deer Knight. I don't think China HAS Wizard101 as the school of Death not only has loads of skulls and skeletons in them, but it's also a plot device for villains. Both Malistaire and Morganthe being part of the School of Death originally. (a.k.a. Necromancy)
Well, that makes no sense...There are plenty of Chinese movies that have undead in them. Or are those just the Hong Kong ones? I dunno, I'm confused...
Lol, I like how they apparently admitted they're loosening the rules to stimulate the market. Shows how little the censorship has to do with any kind of ethical issues, as it always does.
We're talking about the country that's so superstitous that some buildings do not have a 4th floor because "death" in Chinese sounds a lot like "four" in chinese. They legit censor the number 4
lol the USA sucks balls. Have you seen your shitty economy, gun violence, racism, your education system were you pay hundreds of thousands just to have a fucking professional job, or thousands of dollars just to get a vital surgery? What about your retarded population that votes fuckers like Trump? Good luck trying to get your jobs back, you'll have to work for the same salary as a chinese lol
I love how you can talk shit about other countries but the moment someone brings something about the USA you get salty lol. If you think China is shit then you have seen nothing about the country you live in lol.
You probably should have stated in the video that the reason is because the concept of Skeletal Reanimation comes from eurafrican religious traditions, and the Chinese government does not want to spread the concepts of voodoo, necromancy, and the like.
then you are saying china hates eurafrican religion and tradition and don't want the eurafrican people's culture to spread they sound pretty racist and xenophobic to me
I think it is more of a fear of it overcoming and replacing their own, since they are not nearly as prolific in media creation. Additionally they do have an officially sanctioned religious worldview, so that being conquered by a more dominant world view is considered a risk. Necromancy in particular is well known as a dangerous and troubling practice even in its source regions, so it is the sort of thing they do not want to become a common practice within their borders. Not wanting to lose your culture is not particularly racist, as the race is only tangentially related, being afraid that another culture will consume your own though is definitely xenophobia, categorically speaking.
As a Wizard101 player, the first thing I thought of was the changes to skeletons in the Chinese sever. I remember a lot of fellow non-Chinese players being confused about why until we learned about that law. Glad to see the game got a mention!
Have you ever seen the average young adult chinese woman? Short doesn't begin to cover. Quite a few young chinese women are short with small frames. You might say childish.
The title made me believe you were going to give an interesting explanation, related to chinese folklore or something, that maybe skeletons were assosiated with something far worse than just death. But nope, you just were like "it's banned because the governament says so". Well, no shit.
I like how this video tiptoes around the reality: The Chinese government is using these rules specifically as a way to strongarm foreign interests to their will, strictly as a matter of foreign policy. The rules are overlooked when it comes to domestic products, as the domestic developers clearly know.
China has around 3 billion people in the world. Massive amount of people to target your games at. However the strict censorship issues there are one of the reasons many game developers want to censor their games everywhere not just the China version. That is why I hate the Culturalization of western gaming industry.
Can we take a minute to appreciate how here in the U.K. we don't have Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales? We get *Salazar's Revenge* which is much crappier a title.
As a person who lives in China currently, Most Chinese players just buy their games on Steam or GOG.com. Digital versions are a lot more easy to bypass the censorship than physical copies.
>the video doesn't even talk about what the cultural implications of skeletons would be in a video titled why they're a big issue why even make a video tho fam
Okay so, I get this right...they might ban Skeletons, because the idea of an animated skeleton or undead in general is superstitious. But then again, doesnt that go for fantasy in general? Both western and eastern?
Wait… how do skeletons constitute a "cult or superstition"? Animated skeletons are a common fantasy theme. You might as well censor out elves, wizards, etc as well. And inanimate skeletons are literally a real thing that exists.
I really have no idea what they're thinking when skeleton = promotes cultish religions and superstitions but zombies = nope, nothing wrong here! If you took that law to its extreme it would surely ban any and all magic in video games, which as far as I'm concerned would _kind of defeat the purpose of video games._
Is it bad that I prefer the censored version in this case? Skeletons are kinda boring as far as monsters go. The Dragon and Zebra Warrior look a lot more unique.
ehh? I'm chinese and have never heard of any taboo skeleton things. China is a huge place, different regions have varying opinions towards traditional practices. But most people who buy games live in big cities, so they don't really care about traditional stuff.
Wait, what about Fire Emblem Echoes: Shadows of Valentia, I did seen Serenesforest showed the info mentioned about Echoes is the first game in the Fire Emblem series released in China and I did seen Bonewalker, Necrodragons, and few Skeleton enemies were in the game?
Imagine a couple in China raising a child that has some odd interest in human anatomy, mostly the skeletal structure. His mother walks in and flips out because hes drawing skeletons.
In Wizard101, they just changed the skeletal dragon into what was already there. The bone dragon was just a skinless version of the Wyvern, so they turned the bone dragon into a wyvern. That zebra lad is also in Wizard101 in the US. Lots of zebras in the world Zafaria are with skin, but some, in the Elephanr Graveyard area, are boneless.
Love that chart at the beginning. Most of these things most be respected for publication in the country, but the country itself do not apply it when how to treat its people xD
I dont see why China would unban skeletons in video games, because the incentive of stimulating the market doesnt apply here. The games are already being released in China, but slightly changed beforehand. This is relatively easy to do in a game, just swap out some textures or models, but in a movie you would have to create entire new detailed animations and possibly redo the scene which is simply not worth it. Thats why these movies got banned entirely in the first place.
The Chinese version of the Dimir House Guard magic card is terrifying, it's like the artist was asked to "just put some skin on the skeleton" and was feeling a little spiteful that day.
Doesn't Japan have a similar belief towards amputation? I remember waaaaaay back when, the trailer for Metal Gear Solid 4 was censored. Originally, the Beauty and Beast squadron amputated all those soldiers in their Middle East attack, when Raven swooped down and hit those soldiers standing there. The soldiers got their legs, torsos, and heads sliced off from her wings. They removed it in the final game.
Anyone remember in the old cartoons when the character got the shit scared out of him/her and the skeleton would pop out and the body would be like some mascot suit with a zipper.
Note to self: If China ever decided to invade my country, just keep all the halloween decorations placed around my house 24/7. Peace negotiations won't take long afterwards
Chinese gamer: *WOAH* a skeleton! Is this a custom version of the game? anywhere but china gamer: No people censor skeletons for china Chinese gamer: oh.
I was talking to someone who was a former Chinese citizen once, they said almost every game on the PC had a "skeleton patch" someone made to restore the censored content.
