hi loved the video as i do all of your videos and look forward to them every week . if it was not for your review of the s500 mini i would most likely have not bought one. am shocked to here that you get death threats. i would have thought anyone who left comments would only send positive ones as your videos are good and entertaining . this is my first time comment although I've been watching for years.
I’m glad I still have a fax machine. Yes, I have a fax machine embedded in my printer tied into a landline. Yes I have landline. Don’t pay the haters any attention. They have no imagination or appreciation for things they don’t have the bandwidth to understand.
@@g-wolf9445 I think I tried to send you a reply fax and although I heard your fax tone, a connection between ours couldn't be established... if you're in NM?
I’ve been a supporter of your channel for a few years now - and I’ve loved every video you guys have produced. I know the hard work you put into these - and as I’ve said many times in the past, it’s absolutely appreciated and enjoyed. For all the bad comments, I hope you see that the good ones far outweigh them. Wishing you guys all the best.
I couldn't wrap my head around that either. I would have thought you were one of the least offensive channels out there? (not excusing any kind of abuse but...) On a funnier note, the telephone company sending out 2 trucks and guys who looked like they were suited up to build a nuclear bunker? Is all america like that?! :)
You need to filter out these, but on single level, democracy, the more blocks the less energie they are getting back. Even this message is bad. My Dad always learned and told me, ignoring is the best thing to do. And i still believe in that. Throw the comments away like coffee filter ;) @@RetroRecipes
Wow another great video, I was so cross when you said people were leaving those horrible type of comments. *hugs* to you and your whole family. I totally agree with you about the phone lines being a great backup. There will be a time when the internet goes down due to an emergency and/or power outage and most people will have no idea what is going in. Where I live we can no longer get land lines at all. So I have a few, nice SW & HAM radios so at least I might be able to hear what is happening if it's long term. As far as fax technology, without getting too specific, there are still parts of the government that only uses secure faxes to transmit certain types of information as it's by far still the most secure in that arena.
It's terrible that such a heartfelt and obviously well-meaning channel (and presenters) focusing on some of the most universal and innocent nostalgia possible is getting grief. Do what you need to do to keep your family safe and also know that there are a lot more of us out there that respect you and appreciate the way your content affects our lives for the better. Minimise the stress where you can, but please keep fighting the good fight.
Just sent you a fax comment (I think!). Have loved your channel for a long time - down to the little squeaky sound dub you use whenever someone is screwing in something! It’s brilliant, nostalgic, reassuring, and wholesome content. Please keep it up since we love the Retro Recipe family!
I have watched your videos as well over the past few years and your content is always great, interesting, informative and engaging. Please keep these videos coming, I hope you both get more positive comments than negative and keep it all in perspective. You guys rock!
Why would anyone say stuff like that on a channel that's all about retro the world can be a messed up place at times. Love the video and may even send a fax as not sent one for a long time 🙂. As always great work and am so looking forward to seeing what you bring us all next. You guys take care and have a great weekend🙂🙂
I agree, but it's even more absurd at non controversial spaces like this. If this were a political channel or something like that, it would be a bit more expected. I wish you, them and everybody else here a lovely holiday season. 🎄☃❄️ @@jwb718
Another epic repair by Perifractic! That's cool you can still have a copper pair installed to your house. Where I live (France) the old copper network started to be phased out this year and it's no more possible to have an old RTC (PSTN) plug from network companies. Fax can still be used but through the IP network.
Some people are subconsciously jealous that they do not have the passion or discipline to create something themselves. So, often they lash out and try and tear someone down who does, thinking it's the closest they can come to being creative if their overt criticism is able to affect and change the behavior of someone who is. People complaining about your dogs, like they **need** the content you create without your dogs, is a clear example of such a type or person.
Brill as usual. Proper blast from the past. There will always be haters, thats a reflection on them not you. Keep up the good work.... all the best from Manchester, UK x
Reminds me of a time when tech enthusiasts had the following setup. A giant copying machine A "small" office laserprinter about the same size as the copying machine A scanner the size of a VCR A telephone/Fax machine A pager And a brick cellphone with about 30 minutes of batterylife to call their friends and say "You will not believe where I'm calling from" before the battery whent flat. I also love these wholesome nostalgic videos
Hi RetroRecipes family, I enjoy your videos and lighthearted humor. Yes indeed, turn the other cheek with those cheeky people, they are just trying to dampen the good energies of your channel. peace love light
That is some serious dedication - you must have replaced every component on the board? Glad you got it working in the end, knew you would, you always do! :) Keep up the great work. By the way PCB stands for Phax and Call using Bloody expensive phone line.... doesn't it?
Another great video. I don't often read the comments and was sad to hear you speak of the abuse you receive 😢. Keep smiling and know that your content is loved by many😊
I used to work in the marine electronics industry and the local prawn fishing fleet LOVED their fax machines. This was back in the AMPS (analog) mobile phone days. It was well known that conversations on the analog phones could be intercepted (albeit illegally), so the fishing companies installed Motorola Cellular Connection boxes to their mobile phones. This simulated a good old fashioned 2-wire phone line into which a fax machine could be connected. While it was technically possible to decode a fax transmission as it was flying across the air... there was no evidence that anyone in the fishing fleet had the equipment to do this.
Great video, Perifractic! Love your dedication and you practical midnset. Never had to mess up with Faxmachines back in the day, but even with no interest in this technology from my side, you made a very interesting and compelling video about this topic. I like the walking araound and talking in nature footage. And coming from Germany myself: "Ja, Ja, das ist sehr gut! Prost!". Wish you all the best my friend!
Ten years ago I replaced a multi-function printer for a non-profit I used to volunteer at. The multi-function had print/ copy/ scan/ fax features. The VP of the non-profit saw the printer had a fax option, and wondered why we weren't using it? If any receipts were sent, they were received by email. No need to pay for a land line that requires a long distance plan to be useful.
Such a fun and interesting video. - I can see under your eyes that the nights are short. Babyfractic is handful I guess. But Ladyfractic is radiant! - Ashleyfractic !!! - What an amazing job on the connector and then on fixing the PCB components. Your perseverance and troubleshooting skills never cease to amaze me.
I really appreciate the channel. My 2¢: the comments section is a great place for learning - so please don’t disable it. Ignore hateful comments - just negative people who get pleasure from putting others down. Easier said than done, and that’s why we can’t have nice things. Just know that the rest of us will continue to enjoy all the nice things you show on the channel, and the great positive energy of the hosts and guests!
You're right, and I've learned that in some pieces of nasty feedback is a nugget of gold to be listened to. It has certainly helped me improve many things such as audio quality over the 5+ years.
Truth be told, I would be fascinated to see if this pans out - and *how* it pans out. My good friend Jim lives in Tulsa. He has still got his landline and two phones without electricity. He’s going to his grave with that line. It was incredible that his part of Tulsa was ravaged by a freak storm back in the summer of 2023 and his phone line was functioning straight through the resultant power outage. I’m sure he was thoroughly thankful to be an AT&T customer then.
I've realized that a comment or two I've made in the distant past was rude and insensitive and I apologize for that. I've spent the past couple of years or so being more mindful of such things. You do good work, my friend.
That takes a lot to admit to and you have my instant respect for it. I don't specifically remember your comments, but am always happy to live in the present. Thank you for sharing all that.
I know I've said this many times before, but I think you are your family are doing an incredible job with this channel. You bring a tremendous amount of joy to the world through your content, so I hope you understand how much your family means to us. That being said, I thought you might want to make use of a trick that I've used for years to overcome criticism. I actually worked in health care for over a decade, and I've had to deal with constant insults and criticism for most of my career (I worked with a lot of dementia and mental health patients). The best advise I can give you is to simply develop an attitude that I call the "Seinfeld" attitude. It basically boils down to a simple phrase that I found to be extremely helpful ... "that's a shame". This might sound like a harsh way to address criticism, but I've found that not giving two s#its about what someone thinks about you is often the healthiest option. Just my two cents. 🙂
Oh man, same here. I just felt disappointed by that phone call to Spectrum, especially considering how Peri talked about how saddened he felt about getting rude comments. I mean, getting upset that a VoIP company didn't provide landline service came off like someone who was incredulous because they couldn't understand that McDonald's didn't sell Whoppers.
Spectrum never did regular landline phones, so it's not surprising it couldn't work and they had no idea how to direct his request. Otherwise, it's just some random person who's barely trained who can't say no.
@@nickfifteen Yeah I felt genuinely sorry for the lady on the phone having to cop that nonsense. The VoIP service would've worked fine for fax and pining over a traditional central office landline is wild. Looks like the PSTN landline will go the way of the dodo in 2025 in the USA. I genuinely adore all Retro Recipes videos but this one has given me a sour aftertaste.
Sudden explosion in eFax accounts 😁 Thank you for a lovely episode. For some time I've been wanting to get a landline phone. Right now I'm considering a 'GSM Gateway', a box with a SIM slot and RJ11 socket. That is probably the closest I'll get to it. The 80's and 90's had some well-designed handset models.
I appreciate the old tech but I love that I can drop a stack of papers into the feeder on my Epson and select an e-mail address and in a few minutes, a PDF arrives.
Great to see you out and about, walking Juni. Love seeing her charge about. Fab to see Ozzy in your flashback there, too. RIP li'l guy. Can't fathom how people could be so nasty with their comments. There's not an ounce of malice in any of you. They obviously haven't had decent parenting, where most of us learned the adage of "if you haven't got anything nice to say, don't say anything at all". Sadly, I can't fax you, but look forward to seeing how this takes off. Totally agree with you about fax's benefits over the internet. It's not all one-sided.
As a vintage phone collector, I wholeheartedly approve! IIRC, y'all have a vintage transparent phone that would work on that line, or you could get something like a Western Electric 2500, or even a Princess Phone to keep your fac machine company. I miss my POTS line. Alas, all my vintage phones are just for show. At this year's Vintage Computer Fest Southwest, I spoke to a fellow phone collector who does have a POTS line and he described a similar process to what you experienced. That's a bit too much for me, though. I do still have my old fax machine from work. When we stopped using them, my boss told me that I could throw it away or keep it, so i kept it. I'd use it to fax you if i still had my POTS line. Enjoy your faxstalgia!
Interesting episode, have sent faxes only couple of times in my life, last time probably over 20 years ago. Back then used occasionally also an old school copymachine, but even then, majority of the customers were serviced using email and phonecalls. I live in building which was built in 2005, and this place doesn't have anymore traditional phoneline wall sockets but RJ45 socket or something like that. I actually had shortly a landline phone, and had to use converter piece, as the old landline phone had just old school wall connector (3-pins here in Finland at least).
It's been a while since I had a landline, but my understanding is that the "baby Bells" essentially have a monopoly on telephone lines. So, you'd have to call your local phone company to get a line installed (that is, old school telephone line as opposed to VoIP).
It confuses and infuriates me every time I hear you talking about getting hateful comments. You seem like one of the kindest people and nothing I’ve ever seen on your channel was even remotely offensive. I hope this fax works out for you. As for the trap door phone jack, those are (were) normally used in businesses as the demarcation point and the cord plugged into it went to a distribution block where the rest of the wiring was connected. I’m currently on year 25 at AT&T and for over 20 of them did exactly what the guys came to your house to do.
I was lucky when I bought a Portastudio from Canada that it has a jumper you could reposition to swap back from 110v to 240v. Good job I thought of that before simply plugging it in in my excitement! Great repair job. The printer at work used to receive faxes and most of the time all we got were the equivalent of spam emails today. Offers of cheap holiday packages where you had to send the money off first and stuff like that. Beware of anyone trying to sign you up for a time share deal on a Spanish island! As for stupid people with idiotic comments, sadly these knobheads live amongst us but Darwin usually ensures they don’t live long and prosper. Keep up the great work. Sorry for the long comment but I have to mention the hard drive on the Amiga you showed, that I lusted after as a kid. I think it was 240Mb if memory serves. I did end up with a Amiga 600 with an internal 200Mb drive! Geoff Crammond’s F1 GP was the first game to reside on that!
Just watching your video now, absolutely shocked that you receive death threats, particularly to your wife and dogs. Bloody hell! I usually only briefly look through comments so I've not seen anything bad at all here so far. Anyway, as for Fax, I used fax until the mid 2000s, I've always been fond of the technology but sadly my machine went unused in the end so it went. I used Bars & Pipes btw back in the day on the Amiga, I recall you saying in the past you worked for them. Very cool! Keep up the amazing work, as I've said in the past, the production quality and small details you put in are mind blowing. Yes, I always notice that CGI shining effect you add to the TARDIS' lamp in your room when a certain camera angle is used 🙂
Really cool episode which reminded me that I still have my old fax machine boxed away somewhere in the attic, its prehistoric and hasnt been used since the last ice age but dont fret as I have an ancient Brother A3 office printer that i picked up at a local charity shop for £15 that also has fax, hurrah...pity i dont have a landline anymore!
Next time I stumble across one of the fax modems I'm sure I have, I now have a mission (still have a landline). FWIW, all the hospitals here in (western Canada) also use fax machines. There is something to be said for simple and robust technologies like POTS and fax.
Helas, the odds of a faxed W2 actually reaching the franchise tax board are close to 0 so now the lion kingdom has a 30% state income tax because they lost all records of the withheld amount.
Some people just wake up hollow. No god. No love. No friends. Their only real interaction is to spread hate. Those people should consider meeting god again and asking for a do over. We love you guys.
Oddly enough, the copper landline that had dutifully served my home since 1993 was torn out just last week and replaced with fibre (I had no choice - my ISP was ending its ADSL service and I couldn't find an alternative). Bummer to hear about VoIP not supporting fax - I had hoped to plug my old machine into the "Digital Voice" jack on the new router. Interestingly, the Vodafone rep offered a battery in case of outages (it must be a big battery because the optical terminal and router amount to 11W - 3x more power than my old ADSL router).
Copper is being phased out in uk also by bt new copper installs are not avalible to anyone after sep 5th 2023 the landline plugs in the router 👍🏻 battery backup is avalible if you need to not loose power else no phone #thefuture
I know a kind person when I see one, even if it's through a RU-vid video. And you two absolutely fall into that category. How can someone not like you? I'm shocked, really. 😢 People sending death threats should be prosecuted, period.
I retired in 2016, and at that time my employer was still using fax machines. We had at least three, with different phone numbers. Also, about three years after that, I had to send a couple of faxes related to (I think) a real estate transaction, and had to go to a UPS Store in Nevada to get them to send it. Faxes are very much alive and well.
We still use faxes at work. Although we use e-fax instead of actual fax machines. Despite the availability of e-mails and secure document capabilities customers feel better sending sensitive stuffs via fax when in fact we get them via e-mail from e-fax service. Although the e-mails are secured via TLS during transmission to our e-mail servers. Faxes will be around for few more years.
For the first bit of December 2007, the internet at my college was down! Not only that, but my parents wanted me to send them my Christmas list! What did I do? I typed my list on a college computer, printed it and after asking a staff member, I used one of their fax machines to fax it to my Dad's then-workplace!
after hearing you talking about bad and offensive comments i decided to write more positive comments :-) dont get me wrong - im not one of the people who writes bad and offensive comments but now im thinking that i will write the positive stuff im almost always thinking when i watch your videos more often into the comments section because you deserve it! you and your wife are making the watchers lifes a bit brighter and thats a fact. all these anonymous commentwriters who try to hit contentcreators hard are exactly that - they are anonymous and this gives them this possibility. most of them wouldnt even be able to open their mouth when they would stand in front of you. thank you so much for all your positive and interesting videos -i love em :-) have a nice day and dont let the haters gonna bring you down. p.s.: amiga rulez :-) love from germany
My home has a landline, can't do DSL or fiber, and we haven't used the service for a long time. I depend on my cell or VOIP. My old fax machine, which uses an Ink Roll, just sits gathering dust. I am sad people comment horrible things. 😢
I love your work and wish you and your Family a merry Christmas and happy new year . The world is full of nutters who get off on their own norrow minded world. Thanks again cheers
The Facsimile Machine: The first I heard of it was when a friend of my dad, a ham radio operator was intercepting and printing images from weather satellites.
What is there to hate?? Smooth voice, Retro stuff, Lovely family, Lovely dogs and K.I.T.T ( and your a britt in the states ) I am from London and live in Cornwall. Love you all. Haters need to just turn to another channel ( like I don't watch the BBC lol ) xx
Whilst that is correct, the legislation applies to the newer VoIP lines which means they don't have to require the needed bitrate, but as mentioned I also just wanted to do it the original way :)
Great video. The Secret Life of Machines: The Fax Machine by Tim Hunkin is well worth a watch if you want to see a bit more about the history of fax machines and how they work.
When I started work in 2003 I had a fax machine on my desk, the Samsung SF-3100, it was an inkjet fax machine so you didn't need expensive thermal fax paper. I hardly sent any faxes using it, email was taking over from the fax, though we did have one supplier who we had to send orders to via fax. We had it set, so that people had to ring up before and say I want to send a fax, because you used to get spam faxes, if you left it on auto answer there was the possibility of arriving next morning to find all your paper and ink wasted on spam messages.
Definitely no hate comments from me. You are all a beacon of nostalgic light in this too-toxic world. I have never used a fax although there was one at the company I used to work at. I take it Ladyfractic doesn't appreciate a long screw? Maybe she's just too busy. Great video Perifractic.
Love your post Peri, but i precer the normal way of messaging on You Tube. I like you are huge KR fan and am looking forward to your KITT and Knight Rider posts.Hope you all have a fabulous Christmas. How clever of you to fix that yourself,i wouldn't know where to start.Hope you and your family have a great Christmas.
I am impressed by you perseverance to save this fax machine, I would have given up long before this! I have used plenty of fax machines during their peak, but never found them as a piece of technology I would preserve.
Watching this in the gym this morning, I must admit my heart did sink a bit and was just sad that both you have to put up with the vitriol that comes through. Surely this isn't from the true retro community and probably some sad keyboard warrior. Enough said, so wishing you all a very Happy Christmas and a New Year. Keep the good work up 👍
I wish people knew how much anguish they could cause with a comment. Kinda. I'm sure that would reduce nasty comments by 99% or more, but there are a few sick individuals out there who would still send nastygrams because they know precisely how hurtful they are. I still think it'd be a net good. Maybe some kind of emotional intelligence education needs to be standard practice in schools. Anyway, I love this channel, I love the content you guys make, I love the doggos, I love the weird humor. This place is right up my alley. It feels cozy, like catching up with an old friend. Keep doing what you love, it makes for a great channel. Mute the haters, they just want attention.
My fragile retro soul dances on calming 80's neon clouds every time you release a new video! How anyone could not love the fractic family is beyond my bits! Just yesterday when I was installing a new recepticle I instinctively made the little squeaking sound. You guys are faxing brilliant, wholesome and one of my absolute favourite channels and I feel privileged to share the same spacetime with you on this planet. Lots of love from the frozen tundras of Santa Claus land!
Awww Peri, how could you make a fax video and not mention thst it was still used in 2015 when Marty McFly got fired!!! Awesome video btw,you are a mega-nerd and gid bless you for it 🫶
Greetings from Germany I actually had to repair some of Fax Machines in Doctors Offices in my last Job. Wasn't as awesome as your Video Liebe Grüße, bleib gesund
Please don't acknowledge the negative comments, ever! Been sub'd to u for years and fully understand your vids and perspective. Keep going geezer, even if I have to buy a fax machine 😂 Although we have a few gathering dust in the office 😅
