Glad to see I'm not the only one so deeply nostalGeek as to re-create his own desk, bring out his ancient items, and seat in the middle of it all! My wife doesn't understand this at all, my kids are laughing at me, and sometimes I'm myself inclined to think it's a kind of slight mental illness 😅 But it's so sweet to surrender to it. Thanks for this emotional moment, Christian! Anton
Loving all this time travel stuff, in fact I've written a sci-fi time travel book based on the commodore 64. It's based on my real childhood memories from the 80s mixed with sci-fi. It's called 'The commodore sphere' and it's the first of a saga of 3. Would love for you to read it.
@@capuman That sounds amazing. I was working on a movie idea that ties nostalgia and son and father over the tapes the father left behind of C64 data after he passed. If you have the book in physical form I'd love to unbox a copy and show it on the channel to help you out. You can start the process at the form retrorecip.es/submit 👍🕹
I got emotional along with you, to the point of tears, as I watched all those warm and fond memories you have come rushing back to you at that moment at your desk. I could see your throat tighten and chest swell with emotion. I still have insurance photos of my Amiga 500+ with my 1084s monitor, external disk drive, my old desk and all of my floppies and games from 1991. Before that, I had the C64 and a huge 1541 disk drive. I would give a lot right now to have all of those precious items back in my life. I think it's incredibly special that you have that desk and everything from 35 years ago. That's also when I had my C64 and Amiga. Incredible memories. Thank you for sharing this. It meant a lot to me that you would allow us to join you on this journey. I was very touched.
I know the feeling! I choked up when “Electric Dreams” played. And I found it fitting he talked about Rambo. Because in a video where I unbox some retro goodies from dear friend Wolfgang from Retro is the New Black (check him out) I open the box with a 40th anniversary Rambo knife that I gotten from a production company I worked for who hold the distribution rights for NL.
I'd very much echo the same sentiments. I'm generally not particularly sentimental but with that said, remembering the 'tech' and some of the TV programmes I watched whilst growing up (e.g. Knightrider...your KITT videos) in the 80's and early 90's (born Dec 1979) is strangely enjoyable (especially via this channel. I suspect it's partly because many of us viewers share the same powerful emotions you're experiencing whilst producing this type of content. @RetroRecipes please keep up the good work and I hope you and your family have a fantastic Christmas! FYI - My childhood 'tech' history was: 1. Sinclair Spectrum 48K+ 2. Commodore 64 (technically it was my brother's, but we'd sometimes share our stuff with each other) 3. Spectrum 128K +2 4. Atari ST 520 5. Amiga 500 (WHAT a beast of a gaming machine)
Another great video. It’s Christmas before Christmas : Electric Dreams, Level 42, Ghostbusters and a nice touch of sweet nostalgia. It’s the eighties again
Just finished Max Payne and now with your soothing voice and overall beautiful nostalgic video, it really got me into christmas mood. Thank you Perifractic.
That's amazing. So amazing to be sitting at and using your original desk. I love your nostalgia journey so much. To me, without the memories, it's all just outdated kit. The memories make it special. Thank you so much for sharing yours with us. Happy Christmas.
Thanks for sharing that. Yes, the outdated kit becomes real when it's encapsulated in this way, I find. But it works even if you don't have the original desks (as with my Apple //e stand-in desk). It's more about the look and feel of the scene, if you scene what I meme. Happy Christmas!
These nostalgia journeys are quite emotional. Your so lucky to be able to still own everything and you didn't have parents who would donate (without asking you first) your things you'd stored in cupboards to cousins or their friends grandchildren.
Alas my Dad did donate my C64 and all my disks and tapes, but only because I said he could. There was a family they knew who were less fortunate than us, and I was moving up to the 16-bit era. I'm all for charity to this day, yet somehow that's one of my big life regrets 🤷🏻♂
I remember coming back from uni in 1994 to find my very collectable TCR set from 1985 had been 'given to the scout auction'. The last one from the factory my mum had gone to get from the closing down Ideal Toy factory in person with all the spares and a Dukes of Hazzard General Lee mint in box. It's still a topic of Xmas lunch contention to this day!!!!
@@culttelevision My parents gave me an incredible life but I have to share that my Mum didn't ever quite seem to understand nostalgia or sentiment for "objects". She was often wanting to "get rid of" things that to her were storage or clutter. It's something I can't understand _not_ understanding to this day ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
@@RetroRecipes Some people are just like that. I luckily managed to keep my C128, Amiga, and all the disks of pirated software. However, years later in college I found some original PDP-8 programs on paper tape. This was a little before my time, but still a cool piece of history. A co-worker of mine who worked in the same computer lab did some "cleaning" one day, and just threw it out! Why I'll never figure out. He threw out a bunch of other peoples stuff that they didn't give permission for him to throw out. I think some people just assert dominance over space. It's been almost 30 years, and I still am a little steamed at him. Dan, if you're reading this... I didn't forget! Anyway, we can't keep everything. Maybe only having a portion of the things from our past makes us appreciate the few pieces that remain.
Sharing your memories brought back many of my own memories. 40 years ago this Christmas I got my first computer ( a VIC 20 ), the next year I saved up and bought a Commodore 64. I was totally obsessed with it and wrote my own games as well as hacking commercial games to add cheats. In 1986 I saved up for a record player and CD and sold my computer. My school told me I was not good enough to study an O level in computers so I lost interest but those 3 years were the best times I ever had !
I'm a few years older than you. At the age you were enjoying the Commodore I was in 1977 or so with the Magnavox Pong game. It's awesome seeing your thoughts rushing back to that time. Godspeed!
I know exactly how you feel! Each time I'm visiting my parents' home I stay at my old room which over the time became a time capsule. First unnoticable, but over the years a priceless and, as it seems, inexhaustible source of childhood and teenage memories, including some very old and still working Amiga computer hardware (and hundreds of disks). Great video - I'm sure you had to shed a tear or two filming...
Dude, Loved this episode, not many people get the chance to physically link back to their childhood as you did here and us, the viewers seeing genuine emotion, seeing your memories flooding back before your very eyes, memories thought lost in the annals of time. 👍
I really enjoyed this one. I almost feel second-hand nostalgia on your behalf! Great to see the WHSmith and Tandy shops. I bought many games and accessories from those two shops in Richmond back in the day. Great stuff, Christian,
That's awesome! I forget what film that's a clip from but I bought the rights to use the clip. I think it was $500. Well worth it to be able to "go back" to George Street. It was actually 1982 not 1981 BTW. They year the C64 was launched! Could've even been one in that blurry window!
@@RetroRecipes It's so good to see those kind of videos of towns a few decades ago. Makes me wish I could just walk around there as it was in the 80's one last time.
Oh man! I feel this along with you. I wish I had all my stuff from when I was that age. I Get super emotional around the holidays, and this just amplifies the feelings. Cheers mate, and have a really happy christmas!
Getting and playing Ghostbusters for the first time is one of my fondest childhood memories. I remember that evening and completing it over and over into the early hours of the morning in front of the television. The only other memory that comes close was playing two-player Wizball with a friend until we finally completed it, on that same old giant TV.
There's a video circulating on social media labeled smoething to the effect of "The sounds of the 80s" and it had electronic noises like the sound of a tape cassette or VHS tape ejecting, tones on a push button phone, computer keyboard clicks, etc. There is truly something magical about the sounds and smells of older electronics. There is a call and response if you will with these older electronics that newer electronics lack. I've been in IT Support since the release of Windows 3.1 and last year I setup a new office with all the latest computer equipment - what caught me off guard was how similiar the smell of new copier machines warming up smell exactly like the video arcades I visited as a teen!!! I was surpised at the rush of feelings and emotions. Nerd feelingz??? I dont know, but it was joyful as was this video. Thanks for sharing the joys of your childhood and Merry Christmas to you and your family. :)
Thank you continually sharing your nostalgia trips. I am quite envious that you have so much of your childhood still in your possession. I still have dreams of my childhood home/bedroom and I would love to do what you are doing with your childhood bedroom reconstruction. Cheers!
You can see how much a good person you are from how time you're travelling expedition affects you. Another great vid. Still got my C64 ghostbusters tape.
This video was amazing, You got so much stuff from when you were a kid including the original desk which is crazy!! I love this and thank you for your entertaining videos that keep me coming back for more!!!!
This video stirred up so many happy fond emotions in me. I could see how much it all meant to you. Thank you for sharing it with us. Definitely put the spirit of Christmas in me my friend. When things are not going well, you are there to bring good feelings. A good friend passed away recently and this was my first genuine smile since then. Hope you have a wonderful Christmas!
What a fabulous video. You are so lucky to still have lots of your old stuff. The 80’s must have been diary mad coz I kept a daily diary and rated games etc. I vividly remember Ghostbusters on the C64 as I think it was one of the first games to have a realistic voice. Like you it’s lovely to reminisce and I bought an Arcade1up Star Wars off that very reason. Now after an 80’s fruit machine but they are so expensive! All the best from over here in England, your video has made me smile and I’m about to put the kettle on and have a lovely cup of tea.
The feels with your dog, a lot of my memories of my c64 and Amiga are tied up with my dogs growing up, I got my c64 on xmas85 ( I still have the video of me opening it and going crazy), and the year after we got our new puppy for Xmas after losing our first the month before I got my c64. The morning I got my new puppy she chewed up two of my kempston joysticks ! Another lovely video perifractic, lady, baby and puppy frantic , thanks for a great year of wholesome content that I always find warm and fuzzy in my Tum tum
This is perhaps the loveliest video you've done old chap. This actually made me happy sad happy. Ghostbusters on C64 was part of a wonderful childhood memory. . Happy Xmas 'Fractics
I just can't get over the joy I get from seeing others savor their nostalgia in the way it should be. I know far too many people who think of nostalgia as some sort of addiction that should be laid off. That you're only thinking back onto the times of old because you're not happy with what you have now. It's wonderful to see someone fully able to love what and where they are in life now, but still live for the memories they have. If you're expected to lay off your memories then color me a failure because I will certainly not be leaving my precious memories behind. Neither should any of you. Keep it throughout your entire life. The more memories associated with it the better and all the more reason to stick to your guns. Have a wonderful 2024, full of both new and old memories!
I was there at the Commodore Computer Show in Hammersmith....at the Novotel 😳 I was 14.... OMG!!! I grew up in South Ealing.... used to ride my Raleigh Equipe to Richmond park all the time..... following your journey really puts me back there in my youth.... so many similarities.... must find the pics of my bedroom setup lol..... Thank you to you and family for all that you do......😁🤗🥰
In my falling down shed, there are the names of me and friends written above the door from when we were in high school in the 90s, I plan to preserve that patch of wood and screw it in to the new shed. Last Christmas I tried to rebuild our original C64 setup, but couldn't find the desk or one that even came close, just ended up using the C64 on the TV, my Nephew took to Donald Ducks Playground really well
I am repeating myself, but when a genuine human being such as yourself shows us these incredible memories, it fires off memories of my own. That you wear your heart on your .. desk? is a testament to your parents. My life is definitely richer for having found your channel, and your memories are now shared, and I am really grateful that you have done this. There are amazing people in this world, and the 'fractic family are definitely some of the best. May you have an amazing festive season and thank you again.
Hi Christian. I have absolutely no way of re-creating my childhood setup as everything was sold or is long gone now. Seeing you do this, let off enough pure nostalgia to bring back my own personal childhood memories, so I want to respectfully thank you for triggering that within me. What a feeling. Reliving at least some of the greatest of days is an incedible experience! You're so lucky to have preserved so much of your actual past. Great video! Thanks 🙂 Cheers, Arkay.
Happy Christmas! I still have my Apple IIc from 1985, it does need some work on it, but I'm sure I can get it to work again. It was my sweet sixteen gift from back in the day and that time was the best in my life. I love your channel because it brings back so many memories to us old folk.
Thanks for taking me on this special nostalgic journey with you. And if you may permit me to say, from one father of three to one father-to-be, the memories with your new family will be just as sweet. Plus you will have the presence of mind to savour every moment. I stand here doing the roast in the kitchen listening to your video, and I can hear from the living room my children and wife playing Christmas carols on their instruments, and am filled with happiness. I wish you and your family a very merry Christmas mate.
GB on the C-64 was class. Disappointing your Christmas Day was spoiled a bit but then not every kid got a apology 😂. The excitement of opening the game, going for the load only to hit a brick wall - absolute devastation when you realise it’s faulty after probably trying it a hundred times. It would have been amazing if you had still the GB code you got to the account so you continued your game. 👍
So strange, I've just literally made a video on this exact game in great detail! Wow Peri, you've really pulled at the heartstrings of many nostalgic C64 gamers! ❤
Cool! Couldn't find it at your channel; what's the video title to search for (URLs will likely be blocked). I did find Maria's Christmas Box though and wasn't disappointed ;)
I’m the same have many nostalgic feelings and try to recreate the past of times gone by that brought me so much happiness but I’ve also learned to enjoy everyday in the present because these days will soon become past times as well, my advice is don’t dwell too much on past times and ensure the life in front of you today doesn’t pass you by, enjoy time with family and make memories just as good as the past ones
I liked that. First thought was: your original desk is exactly my little secretary desk in my living room, without the roll top on it. Really the same. Cool! Also, my desk as a student also had the drawers on the left hand side as my dad was also left handed.. Never thought about that before... And when you were loading Ghostbusters, and those thicker beams started flashing, I suddenly remembered the sound it made, and the small pattern just before it started! Really cool! But you really were far more organised than I was. My desk was a MESS! ¡Mis mejores deseos para esta Navidad!
My desk sadly was just a Formica white generic thing but other wise very similar! Hitachi TV for me with a 1541 disk drive and the standard tape deck. My Dad still has all of our C64 stuff including one in an aftermarket case like yours and a 9 pin printer and a plotter that draws with little pens on a roll of paper about the same size as a toilet roll! Amazing kit
Your mention of Bruce Willis made me think about the films I saw him in. I was among the few people who enjoyed the film, Hudson Hawk. A light comedic romp that beat Harry Potter to the Philosopher's Stone. The game was quite good too. Your talk of parallel timelines made me wonder what you thought of the Doctor Who 60th-anniversary specials and the new bi-regeneration development. Very Quantium Mechanical multiversal alternative timelines. Another way to view past events, or future events would be to use micro wormholes as viewing portals. I once read a speculative fiction novel which used that idea although I cannot remember its title "The Light of Other Days" by Stephen Baxter and Arthur C. Clarke. Happy Christmas to all of you and all your subscribers and patrons.
Love these videos. The music! The music! Love it. The nostalgia. The tech. The fun. Thanks, bud. Keep up the very fine work. Have a great festive season. X
Coincidence, and I found my GB manual today in a closet with written down bank account numbers for starting the game with some more cash. I put it back in it's case with the GB logo on front like you took it out of the cassette case. My lady and I watched your video together (parts of it at least)
WOW!!!!!! What a trip down memory lane, Your life is very very similar to mine. I had exactly the same knife given to me by my uncle Harry.( my mom hated it ) The only things missing from this video is a walkers cheese n onion butty made with thick sliced sunblest white bread( the only thing I knew how to cook as a kid ) and a glass of ice cold Corona dandelion n burdock fizzy pop.
Thanks for sharing your trip down memory lane, Christian. Happy Xmas to you, Lady Fractic, Baby Fractic, and Puppy Fractic. My first 1541 floppy drive was faulty, too, and had to be replaced.
As we age we must continue to create and share the joy with future generations. I can’t wait for Babyfractic to become Toddlerfractic and Kiddofractic playing with all these things.
I love you guys, I love the feeling of finding something from ones childhood & then re living it & feeling all that good nostalgia that takes us back to an era that was much more simple & amazing, I miss the 80's/90's so much
Thank you for your kind words. "Eyes Without A Face", yes indeed. A metaphor for how adults can hide these feelings behind a mask, but I've grown to enjoy letting them show. We are all both the children we once were and the adults we now are.
Wow! I had the very same quickshot Joystick! Actually still has it but not in such good condition. And I had a Spectrum 48k until 1990 when I got my beloved A500. 😊
Fantastic post Chris. This has been a great series watching you complete. My friend at work found me a CRT and I fired up my dads Spectrum 128k a couple of weeks ago after 30ish years. I've loaded up a game from my Android app but it's not quite the same feeling. The next mission is to load up one of his tapes the way it was supposed to with a tape recorder. I can't wait.
Biggles!!!! I love that movie and videogame. *singing “Do you want be a hero!!”😂 and then I hear “Electric Dreams” written my Giorgio Morodor and I choke up a little. I was a fan, still am! Also a fun memory of Chernobyl was that we walked in the rain and the North Sea that cold March. Everybody was hunkering under awnings because “radioactive rain” 😂😂😂My dad whom has worked with radiation most of his career to design automated test setups for bespoke ball bearings was like: “don’t trust the media! They know nothing even if it’s measurable it’s nothing to be worried about.” And sure enough we are still here 😂And now I have some Cesium-139 and Cobal-60 in my vault for calibrating gamma spectrometers. I even tried to make a coin radioactive with some polonium-210 for a which hand routine where instead of magnetic coins and magnet detectors (Like Derren Brown use) we could do a more reliable measurement with radioactive sensors. Unfortunately that very dangerous experiment (neutron radiation is the only scary stuff) didn’t produce enough neutrons to make the coin radioactive. This was 2008 by then you couldn’t call a nuclear power plant anymore to get things irradiated with neutron radiation anymore 😢Even my dad’s connections couldn’t help me. So it was back to using magnetic coins and magnet detectors 😂
Amazing that you still had the desk and were able to pull it through time to where you are now! Seeing you go through your diary and remember the past took me back to my own memories for a moment. Thanks for the journey! By the way, PCBWay stands for Peri's Childhood Bedroom, What A Year, doesn't it?
found your imdb mr. Simpson! the things you've accomplished even before this great RU-vid channel is truly amazing! p.s. the trinket basket sniffing part really got to me. Dreading the day my 1st doggo goes.
Brilliant! I still have my Quickshot II Turbo (though I became a Zipstick man shortly after getting that), the ET pack (I see the pencil sharpener every time I go into the loft), that same tape version of Ghostbusters, and since you asked, here are my best scores for two of those games: Thrust: 93,450 Paradroid: 55,520
Superb video... I never had a C64 back in the day and you're convincing me to get one now! One thing...did you never throw ANYTHING away from your childhood? 🤣 - I literally have nothing from when I was this age (I'm 46)
Wow, i should maybe recreate my C64 workstation. I did DIY monitor stand for it that enabled disk drive to be under monitor, it was small TV with scart input. :) I do not have the table i used to have, but i have one that is quite similar. Small kitchen table from 50's :D that table is currently in my basement and i actually used it to develop one webshop in late 00's
Press play on tape. Man that was a long time ago for me. In... about five days I'll turn 42 so it would be a long time ago. I think we had a C-64 for about a year and a half (a used one) before I got my NES console, so MY nostalgia really starts with Nintendo and Mario, but still... Playing "Forbidden Forest" (scary!) and other games I can't even remember any more, I think we only had cheap knock off cheap games, no real mainstream titles. I guess "Bravestarr" might count? But I never got a true handle on that game. We had one cart game, "Soccer" that did not require loading at all. I have "fond" memories of sitting around waiting for games to load though. 😀 Nostalgia hits hard sometimes, glad you got your old desk back, have fun! 😉
Love this video, brought back lots of old memories, wish I kept my original C64 gear when I upgraded to the Amiga but stupidly I was keen to get rid of it after upgrading :( Over the years I acquired pretty much everything I used to have with my C64 setup. Everything's stored in the loft, using emulators at the moment to play all my favourite C64/Amiga games. The quickshot II turbo was my favourite joystick, was bummed when that got discontinued & mine broke forcing me to buy the quickshot python which I still have also bought a number of quickshot II turbo joysticks of Ebay a few years back. I got a usb adaptor so I can use the joysticks on C64/Amiga emulators.
I guess I am about 10 years older than you, as I was in high school when I got my breadbin in 82, I had to move from South Dakota in 84, and I upgraded to a 1802 monitor that I still have. Added the 1581 and geos… upped to the 128, and a ton more. Miss that system.
i swear i had the same tv when i was younger . reason i say that because i had that one in my bedroom and we had a tv on rent downstairs and you had to put like 50p in the back and you can watch it for 6 hours . but when my mum didnt have the money for it, she used to pinch my tv to watch eastenders or going for gold lol
I can totally relate to this. If i could i would recreate my little gamesection aswell. Playing under my loftbed. I had a commodore 1084 and an old color crt tv next to each other with a few consoles. playing shenmue 2 on my dreamcast during christmas season 2002 on the commodore monitor with hanging fairy lights under my bed (above my head) and eating gingerbread, such great memories😅
Did you ever go to computer fairs? I remember always heading to London to grab the latest on cassette for my Vic20 (Mum couldn't afford the 64 , I saved up for the Amstrad CPC464, my mate had the colour monitor I could only afford the Green screen. Jet Set Willy was a favourite.
I found this absolutely heartwarming. If I were to recreate my room, there would be slightly older tech, and the great poster from the double LP Star Wars soundtrack. Thank you so much for the video 😢
Another heart felt hit right in the feels episode. How fortunate that you still have a lot of your childhood treasures. Thanks for sharing. Merry Christmas to you amd yiur family .
I had a huge stack (must have been a foot tall) of those pocket size dandy's and the beano's when I was a kid. Is that a black widow gadder (slingshot) on the desk at the end ?
