I finally watched Wish and I'M GLAD I HATE IT - but I want to talk about why WE hate it. I think the Internet's hatred of Wish represents something greater... but what? Join Calxiyn as she explains WHY she's glad to be a hater, what being a hater gives us, and a lesson about the importance of fan content and how they are connected to the history of fairytales.

I think "let people enjoy things" works best as a response to moral outrage, if that makes sense. In the online realm of criticism nowadays you see a lot of "X character did Y bad thing and the story didn't punish them for it, so the story condones doing Y." In cases where someone is using their analysis as a weapon to attack the artist or claim a lack of morality from the viewers, sometimes all you can say is to chill and let it be. I think a lot of people misconstrue legitimate criticism with reactionary or simplistic interpretations, and start to act like any criticism is some kind of personal claim. After all, if everyone you interact with does mean that criticism as a personal slight, you're going to take it as such. People just need to relearn how to separate criticism from morality imo

Disney animated movies are supposed to be for Families. That does NOT mean made for 'kids'. It means something that can be enjoyed by children AND their parents. If the adults can't enjoy the movie it's no longer for 'families'. I Hate the rhetoric 'it's made for kids' or 'it's not that deep' cause I feel that only works for stuff Actually made for toddlers or super young children. Even then you need to be aware of what lessons your telling to children. If its for children it should have More thought put into it.

So many of the old Disney movies were so good because they had all those different subtextual meanings that people could debate about like "does this intentionally have queer subtext or is it just a fun coincidence?" or such, meanwhile with wish you have to read into it too deep like that just to even find a meaning in the first place.

Don’t trust any authority ever because even if they appear benevolent they’re evil? Soooo… sorry kids don’t trust your parents who (should!) have your best interests at heart?? It’s a bad message. For real. Like I feel like "let people enjoy things" originally was supposed to be "Hey, maybe leave people alone & don't be a jerk" but instead people are really fixated on the "enjoying" part. And because "someone on Twitter said something snarky about the thing I like on my For You page even though it wasn't directed to me personally" could be taken by someone as that person not "letting people enjoy the thing" it's become a blanket statement of anyone being critical in their own space. Like if someone made a tweet about how much they adored this movie I would not say anything to them, that would be rude. But I'm not "letting them enjoy things" I'm just... not being an asshole to a stranger LOL.

@CalxiysnCaresTooMuch Facts. I think something that the “let people enjoy things” crowd misses is that negative discourse can be even more productive than positive discourse. Examining why this movie doesn’t work can be very insightful towards artists who don’t want to repeat the same mistakes, or who want to take a similar premise and execute it much better. Furthermore, if everyone had the middling “live and let live” attitude instead of the collective passionate negative reaction, would we have received the amazing animatics and fan works based on Wish’s original premise? I don’t think so. Negativity has its place, and considering the negativity towards Wish has been rightfully directed at Disney’s corporate vision and not at the individual artists who worked on this movie, I think it was very well placed here.

@@CalxiynCaresTooMuch Yeah I would say the only time I feel like it gets frustrating is when people go out of their way to make someone's day worse that's just enjoying something and expressing that. Like that's not cool, neither side needs to be doing stuff like that. And regardless of whether they're 'right' or not, they will always be wrong if they're being a dick in making their points. I'm not a big fan of people being overly negative or contrarian for no reason, when it's founded I get it but sometimes people can take it too far. We tow the line between constructive criticism and personally motivated hate when that's happening. Internet cynicism is rampant too, important to keep in mind that it's hard for people to read negativity 24/7 (look at how unhealthy people chronically on platforms like twitter are because of constantly doomscrolling and feeling social pressure to post in support of all possible negative world events punctually). But outside of that, negative commentary has its place and it's not really my place to be mad about it. I can disagree, but I think that's also different. More people need to learn that disagreeing != hate. And that's for both the people disagreeing and the people being disagreed with.

The way I see criticism of my favorite stuff is like watching people talk about what's good or bad about a recipe before trying it. Like for example, a repeated criticism in your Hazbin videos seems to be that some of the lyrics were over cooked, but I like crispier cookies, so I can admit that like "yeah, that part did try a bit too hard to be clever." but still think it's good.

I hope you don't mind me doing a mini-rant myself about "Wish": (Before I start, I question why they didn't finish "Gigantic," a fairy tale musical set in Spain, or at least use the same team for "Wish" once it was cancelled.) 1. Asha is a disappointment in almost every way. She doesn't learn or grow her perspective like Judy Hopps, Anna, Pocahontas, Raya, etc. She's just always right, and she's "quirky" in such a cringey way. The hybrid art doesn't make her dress look as good if it was 100% 2D or 3D, and I wish they kept the orange color instead of purple like Rapunzel and Isabela Madrigal. Plus the braids seemed very modern and Sub-Saharan African to me (not an expert, but that's just my vibe)--plus look up "Aida" from the Disney Broadway play. They also have her with braids and a purple outfit in one of her performances. Not to mention her family is poorly fleshed out, from her mom's mystery wish to her dad influencing her despite not having a significant presence in the film, to her grandfather whose life before Rosas is never explained. My ideal version of Asha would've perhaps paid more homage to her Amazigh heritage--or make her Romani, since Spain has the highest Romani population in Europe and it'd be a good Esmeralda callback--an orange dress (or a red one; see complaint #6), as well as making her a little bit older and mature, maybe even shy--or a pessimistic person who sees the fairy tale life as a front and unattainable. Nevermind the story gives her better writing than having plot armor to defeat the king who can shapeshift, alter/erase memories, and has a magic mirror. 2. Magnifico and Amaya are poor imitations of what they could've been. Magnifico was originally a good guy while Amaya was a villain (as confirmed by Amaya's VA), followed by a villain couple, followed by a bland good guy Amaya and a lackluster villain Magnifico. A lot of people want a classic villain, but I want a new Disney antagonist, one who isn't a villain per se, but whose perspective is at odds with the protagonist so they can both grow. Just like Gaston paralleled the Beast and Lady Tremaine paralleled Cinderella (at least in the 2015 remake), allow Magnifico and/or Amaya to represent a broken hero, someone who lost their way but still learned a lesson that they took to extremes. 3. The Teens, while a good reference to the 7 dwarves, are WAY too many characters for one film to characterize properly. Conflate Hal with Dahlia, Dario with Safi, and Gabo with Simon, or something like that; just give us a smaller friend group to flesh out and explain their own motivations and wishes. 4. Star not being here feels like Disney continuing the backlash they used to get for their female lead always having romance. Asha and Star could've been a couple--heck, I LOVE the idea of Star being Magnifico and Amaya's son (think Hercules, Elsa, and Rapunzel vibes) and thus being the bridge between the protagonists and antagonists. 5. GIVE US COLOR! Everything was so pale, despite "Sleeping Beauty" (who's opening number shows an array of bright colors) being an inspiration. If everyone is pale after giving up their wishes, that works, but restore it when they get their wishes back/granted, explaining Asha's vibrant color palette. 6. The story is boring. Take inspiration from "The Sorcerer's Apprentice" for Asha training under Magnifico, learning magic and understanding his worldview while she teaches him her own (and give them the Mickey/Yen Sid color palettes). Perhaps include "The Pink" and "The Fisherman and His Wife"--you know, fairy tales about wishing? Maybe even rip off "Shrek 2" by making Magnifico a fairy godfather with Asha as his apprentice, which helps the ending make more sense. Let Asha grant a wish against Magnifico's advice and race to fix it before potentially destroying the kingdom. Mix elements of "Kingdom Hearts" and "Enchanted" for good measure, perhaps with some good sassy jokes like "The Emperor's New Groove." 7. The music needs a retool. Based on what Jennifer Lee and Julia Michaels have said, Disney did her a disservice. While I'd have enjoyed Lin-Manuel Miranda or the Anderson-Lopez team to do the music (I love them for "Frozen," but Disney should give them other musicals, too), Julia being a pop/radio writer doesn't automatically disqualify her from writing music for a Disney film. Just let her and Benjamin Rice have more time to write the songs during production and come up with unique sounds and lyrics (Lady Gaga, Taylor Swift, and Billie Eillish feel like good inspirations for a mainstream sound, personally).

@@onceuponahair20 Honestly we could've gotten a better movie, but it seems Disney didn't know what they wanted to do and then rushed their creatives; "This Wish" was made before the script and Julia said they only had one storyboard to work off of. Given how "Frozen 2" went through troubled production, I'm unsurprised that "Wish" ended up being a fallen star.

Thank you for giving your thoughts! Don't worry, I have a veeeeeery similar rant about these things that I want to make eventually. Like I have 11 pages of notes and what you said isn't too far off from how I feel, so I think you'll be vindicated lol. Particularly with Asha, I feel like this movie is really strange. Because the story book opens with a lore dump about Magnificio and it sort of frames him weirdly as the main character for some reason. I also feel like they had something really interesting to explore with Asha and her father - like they mention Magnificio knew Asha's father and that her father was a philosopher. To me that set off alarm bells as "philosopher = intellectual" and I thought it was going to be revealed that Magnificio killed him or something, since that happens in a lot of real world dictatorships. But they didn't go anywhere with that, or anywhere with anything. Ideally in my rewrite I'd want Asha to have magic all along and either be a candidate for Magnificio's apprentice, or that be something that's a secret. Then when Asha wishes upon the star, Starboy teaches her how to really hone her magic. Then she would go through this arc where she feels like she can't win without Starboy (like in the chase scene where she's panicking about the wand), but the magic was within her all along. Then at the end of the movie she would be pairing people up to make their wishes come true, and giving them a little extra help. Because what's weird about this movie is that in the background characters explicitly say "We didn't need Magnificio, we could make our wishes come true all along" but then they make Asha a fairy godmother which goes against that message. Instead of the idea that a fairy godmother helps to make people believe in themselves, and doesn't just solve everyone's problems. I have a lot of beef with this movie LOL
@OpticalSorcerer
@OpticalSorcerer 3 месяца назад
@@CalxiynCaresTooMuch Asha really feels like she has stuff handed to her. Her actually having magical potential would explain better how she became a potential candidate to be Magnifico's apprentice, though I'd also like to see her interact with the townspeople so it feels like she knows them on a personal level rather than her being a random tour guide who only interacts woth them for work. I forget Asha's dad was a philosopher, and I feel like they only mentioned that for the "aha! It's a star-related field"-type thing. I'd enjoy him being a mystic, something more magical than scientific to explain an ethereal connection to the stars. Magnifico says weird things that don't make sense to me ("I got these genes from outer space") and in his castle, he also has the zodiac symbols that harkens back to the Evil Queen's mirror. It's kind of weird to me that they lean into an almost sci-fi angle with people studying science and the natural aspect of the stars when the setting is deliberately fantasy. And yeah, Magnifico points out that no one wants to work hard for their dreams and then the citizens blame it on him like he just forced them to give up wishes. And Cinderella's fairy godmother said "even miracles take a little time" and "if you'd lost all your faith, I wouldn't be here," so Asha becoming a cure-all and basically the next Magnifico was pretty counterintuitive.

I was always rooting for the movie & didn't hate it because I was so excited as it was the first classic Disney movie set in my country Spain. I been wanting a Spanish princess since forever. I loved they set it in Al-Andalus time which is a big period of the history of our country which is never represented in Hollywood. I loved the fact they decided to do Asha Afro Iberian. I didn't like how generic they made some stuff in the movie like I wish (pun intended) they would have given her a romantic partner it could have been so great if the King & Queen had a Prince who Asha ends up with. Also I would have loved a more authentic & Ethnic soundtrack inspired by Flamenco music & the cast should have been Iberian people they didn't care about us when literally there are names like Rosalia, Penelope Cruz, Javier Bardem & Antonio Banderas who could have & should have voiced the characters. I feel it was such a loss opportunity & the main reason why the movie tanked so bad in my country especially.

As for other people not seeing it in theaters, the blame goes to Disney themselves for not only choosing a release date that isn't entirely realistic (during the _week of Thanksgiving_ in North America mind you) but also not bothering to advertise the film outside of social media and RU-vid (though at least unlike the last animated movie by Disney meaning "Strange World", the merch for Wish wasn't limited primarily to the Disney Store). I like your point about consuming mindlessly. Not only does it allow big companies to continuously serve us slop, it also discourages aspiring artists and writers from trying because nothing they ever make will be appreciated by people who genuinely care. Mindless media consumption is also dangerous. Just Imagine how many problematic messages, propaganda, etc. can be spoon-fed to us if we viewed everything with neutrality and took everything at face value instead of trying to dig a little deeper. Personally, the feeling I get from people hating Wish isn't angry hate, it's disappointment hate. A lot of us artists, animators, writers, were inspired by Disney's older stuff, and to see their fall from grace is saddening. We WANT to like things, but it's really hard to do so when you care enough to realize how soulless their recent projects have become.

It's the principal of it. It wouldn't be the same if Wish was a regular Disney movie. We would have deemed it meh and moved on. But it's specifically because of the type of movie Wish is and what it represents that makes it so disappointing and fun to clown on. It is literally Disney's 100th anniversary celebration movie. Something we've been waiting all our lives for. Disney was king. It was a paragon of amazing stories, songs and animation. Quality in almost everything it did. And you would think, for it's 100th anniversary, Disney would put some actual effort into it's celebration movie. But they didn't. It's honestly a betrayal of the fanbase and themselves, and everything Disney built and stood for.

the irony is not lost on me that the villain (disney) says that he cannot grant the wish of inspiring people (won't create new fairy tales/stories to inspire future generations) while continuously granting the wishes of the people to ensure that they stay happy and placated (instead creating content that only exists for consumption and to keep the corporation running), only to then be overthrown by an underdog group that inspired themselves to ask for more than this (the fandom and internet collectively creating their own stories, art, songs, characters and more, while disney loses millions at the box office). (long ramble incoming, apologies) as someone who has genuinely not stopped thinking about this movie and its concepts since it came out, I absolutely love this video and the analysis you put behind it. I never put two and two together that fairy tales really have been told for centuries and are, at their core, from the people, but it makes so much sense. that's why disney's stories stick in the public conscious because they not only reflected the time period, culture, and thinking of the era, showing us that, at the end of the day, the interpretations may change, but the message and humanity still speak and ring true. these stories were created by the people and for the people. they still stay with us despite the years and now century that have past because of the humanity and love poured into them. something disney now clearly does not understand is that you will always haters. you cannot appeal to everyone - attempting that is only going to end up in pleasing no one. art will always comment on/challenge/criticize something because it was created by a human with experiences and influences based on the time of its creation. like you talked about with beauty and the beast, even if the movie wasn't ABOUT the aids crisis, you can absolutely still interpret it through that lens because of the creators behind it and the story they tell. and from the few interviews and videos we do have of the wish creators, as well as the art book and its concepts, they clearly did have an idea and passion for it that just got whittled down by corporate interference and capitalism. (I truly cannot wait for those NDAs to expire because I need to hear about the production issues that went on behind the scenes for this one - I need an HBO documentary, a dozen RU-vid analyses, and all of the Twitter threads.) it also absolutely delights me that in all of the disney mediocrity of the last few years, new creators, artists, writers, and fandoms have emerged and found success. after the train wreck of Mulan 2020, I found an entire community of AAPI creators who I've been following since and introduced me to so many stories I wouldn't have known about otherwise. and now, with Wish 2023, I've found some incredibly talented creators and awesome channels (such as yours) that have introduced me to music composition, fairy tale history, story creation, character creation, and more. it's so cool to see how this disappointing movie has inspired so many people and launched amazing works. anyway, fantastic video as always, calxyin! I'm so glad you cared so much about wish that you created your channel because your videos have been wonderful! I'm so proud to be apart of this little fandom and I cannot wait to see it continue to grow! (also, I know this is just words from a stranger on the internet, but I'm so sorry about your grandpa. thank you for sharing photos of him with us; I lost my own and know that saying I'm sorry can only do so much. I know it must not have been easy to keep putting out videos with everything going on, but I hope the good vibes and thoughts I'm sending your way help in some way!)

"let people enjoy things" is a valid sentiment, but i think we should also "let people criticize things" because it gets so tiring to go into comment sections from videos reviewing animation and see a bunch of people going "why do you care" and "it's for children". I feel like you would enjoy reading the paper I wrote for my animation history class. It is about why animation and fairy tales work so well together and create these "definitive" versions. Edit: also as a follow up, I think it is very important to emphasize that not only were these stories written by peasants originally, but mainly PEASANT WOMEN. They have such happy endings and love as such a theme because of that. For most women, especially peasants, this was their way to envision a better life for themselves and their daughters. These stories were frequently told while doing chores. So while you wove, your older women told these oral stories to pass the time and make it more fun. Stories of "wouldn't it be nice to be richer? Would it be nice to have a lover who truly cared for you?" To hate on these stories for these qualities shows a classist undercurrent because it fails to understand the privilege we have now of not having to worry about an arranged marriage or being forced to stay in a loveless marriage. We can marry whomever we wish and (for now), leave if that marriage is not what we wanted. Those women couldn't so their dreams reflect that. You can change that if you wish, but do not mock these women of days past for only having that idea of "wouldn't it be nice if my husband truly loved me." That was their escapist fantasy. You have enough that you can dream bigger. Be glad for that.

LITERALLY POP OFF! I plan to talk about that more when I eventually cover Cinderella etc, but fairytales were as feminist as they could have gotten back in that time, in a sense. Cinderella is that wish fulfillment story of being able to be higher status but also fall in love. Women have a very underappreciated role in the creation of fairytales or other folk stories, and you can see in some of the stories how they weren't just about bagging the man (which there's nothing wrong with that either) but actually about their daughters and the horrors of the world lol. Like think about Rumpelstiltskin - this father LIES to the King about his daughter being able to weave straw into gold, and so she has to make a deal with the devil just to keep up that lie. It all works out in the end because she's clever enough to find Rumpelstiltskin bragging in the woods but like... the implication of this is that she didn't really love the King (probably lol), but ended up marrying him. But that she did love her daughter and that's what Rumpelstiltskin wanted her to give up. The girl in the story is treated terribly by men - her own father trades her to a King, the King is going to kill her in some versions if she doesn't weave the straw into gold, Rumpelstiltskin uses her bad situation to pressure her into a bad deal. She could have easily given her daughter away and not have thought twice about it now that she was a princess and had "the good life". But in the end, she fights to keep her daughter and she breaks the cycle of her terrible father.

@@CalxiynCaresTooMuch I know in my research, I ran into this entire theory that there are so many female fairies as a way to sort of... represent the storyteller in a way and thus be the one to grant these characters the things they wanted. It was a super fascinating idea that basically, the self-insert wasn't the lead, but rather the all powerful being that changes the course of the story. They also tied it into old pagan beliefs and goddesses which I personally thought was a stretch (by the time many of these ideas were really becoming more common elements, it was the nobility adding that in and later into the process. By that time, most pagan beliefs, especially in the French circles, were not really remembered that much.), but it was at least an interesting idea.

My honest opinion is that Wish isn’t necessarily a bad movie, it’s just a _lazy_ movie. ESPECIALLY as Disney’s 100th anniversary film. Had they released it any other year, I feel like people wouldn’t have cared as much and wouldn’t have hated on it as much. Disney literally built up everyone’s expectations so high for a movie that was just so, _so_ lacklustre. It almost feels like someone went into a drawer of scrapped movie scripts, blindly picked one, sprinkled in some Disney Easter eggs and just said, “that’ll do”.
@CalxiynCaresTooMuch
@CalxiynCaresTooMuch 3 месяца назад
Yeah I agree with that as well - when you think about it, if it wasn't the 100th anniversary they probably also wouldn't have jammed in so many references to other movies. If they weren't so focused on making it feel like a 100th anniversary it may have felt less... cringey I guess. Like all the references to the other movies made me roll my eyes cause it just wasn't very natural lol. That's the biggest thing (other than the songs) that I don't think is going to age very well, because as time goes on it's going to get even more jarring compared to the other movies. If they had just tried to make a good movie instead of a "100th anniversary moment", like they did for Tangled being the 50th released animated film, it would have probably been better.

Pretty ironic that Wish has succeeded in its goal of inspiring people to hope and dream and create, just not in the way it was expecting to XD Also if the "let people enjoy things" sayers were actually true to their beliefs, they should have absolutely no problem with letting someone enjoy critiquing a piece of work they found lacking, methinks. There can be a lot of catharsis found in ripping something you dislike apart and figuring out why it's not working for you, as I'm sure we're all a testament to by now. This is the first disney movie openly based on the mediterranean and it doesn't even look mediterranean at all. As a Spaniard that's what bothers me. Recently they've been putting in more effort with this stuff, but in here they just thought slapping him horseshoe arches here and there and some little references was good enough. This is an island in the mediterranean, but it looks atlantic. The climate, the fauna, the flora, the stone of the buildings or even most of the structures don't look "medieval mediterranean island" at all. That is a mountain everything, but it's somehow directly touching the sea. It makes sense because in the original concept those were forests meant for the mountain. But it was a disappointing misrepresentation. Even raya did it better and the put all those cultures in a slushie of whatever looks more asian. This doesn't even look mediterranean. You can like it, doesn't mean it's not disappointing and lacking in all the ways the recent movies that were already lacking aren't. And as a mediterranean it's especially disappointing. That's why old disney movies used very vague europeanish settings instead of compromising and then coming short. I didn't care about this movie, but from the trailer it looked aesthetically bland in a way I knew it shouldn't be, so I really don't care that it's terrible in terms of plot or whatever else. But the mediterranean setting was part of the marketing and premise and the only things that looks and feels particularly mediterranean and not generic or confused are magnifico and amaya and those random horseshoe arches.

It really does come down to how badly Disney fumbled what could have been great in a hundred different ways. They could have embraced their history and made something along the lines of a full-length Sorcerer's Apprentice movie starring Mickey himself or some original character to take the role. They could have done what they claimed to want and honestly have an origin story for their wishing star instead of just having it show up as a barely-relevant marketable plushie. They could have done one of the several variations of this movie's script that had a coherent narrative. Instead, for their 100th Anniversary movie, Disney decided to make the most bland, executive mandated, chopped salad of a movie. Something that has no passion, not thought, and no care involved in its creation beyond getting g something out that is completely devoid of substance. Instead of celebrating the best of the company's long history, Wish represents a compilation of Disney's current flaws.

Thank you for making this video! I have been feeling the same about Wish and I finnaly understand how i feel about Miraculous ladybug. (Hear me out-) While Mlb right now is at a stand still with production. This and Wish are kinda in the opposide sides of the scale. Everybody loves wish and wantwd more..sp they made it!Its honestly so refreshing to see a actual starboy. Disney has been declining and now theres a actual spark,I couldent be happier. Miraculous on the other hand is similar..we make fix its and animatics all the time. But they got tired of waiting. Its washy and though we love creating because of thier flaws. There is a bitterness to it. Thankfully the paris special came out to give us faith.

Easiest question to answer: because it was for the 100th anniversary. They shoved in so much nostalgia bait. And won’t even dare to do daring things with their media because “money money money! must be funny! in a rich man’s world!” But Wish proved that it was so not worth it. I would rather have Encanto be the 100th year celebration film. I’d rather watch winx club season 7 than WISH. I WlSH this movie were in 2D at the ever fudging *_least!_* I wish the impossible. That they hired small indie creators to make a traditional tale into a Disney masterpiece. Hand drawn even. Yesh. Delusions. But *_come on!_* 100 years?! 1 Century? HeII yeah we should go all the way

I saw Wish and I was like, "Ehhh, ok," and I hate to say it, it was very underwhelming and it doesn't have that wow factor that most of the classic Disney movies have and I feel like the ideas fell flat. I hate when great ideas aren't actually executed properly and that's what makes it disappointing. BTW, I've lost my 2 grandpas, and my grandma and seeing someone or even hearing them mention how they lost a relative, just hits me in the feels that can't be articulated. Side note, hearing the Wii music in the background made me snicker 😂😂😂, and one huge moment in my life is getting fired from my job that I won't get into much detail about, but I know for a fact that your videos cheer me up in no time, and I'll stand by you 💎💎💎

I’ve seen so many retellings of wish, and every time I think “man, I wish this could be the real thing” but I never stopped to think that those retellings ARE real, they are living breathing stories that people are sharing in the same way our ancestors did with oral storytelling. @@CalxiynCaresTooMuch IMO, the big issue is that most Disney fans knowledge on musical theater begins and ends with Disney themselves. People on this app drive home the fact that Miranda's recruitment by Disney is the reason that they've been using more poppy songs lately. Even though the Sherman Brothers and the team behind Cinderella used to write for rock and roll and pop song before Walt Disney himself recruited them. Lin and the scores he makes are not much different from what you see on Broadway today, but because most people don't know that they just assumed that he's just trying to beat it and down with the kids. The man only knows how to write Broadway stuff.
@CalxiynCaresTooMuch
@CalxiynCaresTooMuch 3 месяца назад
Yeah that's a very good point. Like LMM IS Special and unique, but the problem is, a LOT of Broadway is unique. If Disney is your only frame of reference that's going to make LMM stand out more than he actually does. Because for the most part, Disney has the same composers and lyricists (except for this movie... idk why this is when they decided to change things LOL) and even though "Disney Sound" has totally become a sub-genre, it's also a style. Each songwriter has their own unique style and if people ONLY watch Disney movies they won't understand that aspect of Broadway at large.

I have a video suggestion, though im not sure how viable itd be- would it be possible to review some rewritten covers or versions of songs? Like some of Lydia the Bards covers, for example- and compare their remade lyrics to the original song, seeing whats improved and how well they held or shifted the tone. I think itd be interesting to compare fanwork to original. not sure if you could do this one, since youd probably have to get permission from the creators, but I wanted to suggest it!

We hate Wish because we love the Disney legacy. All of wanted to celebrate the centennial with something special, magical, amazing. We had high hopes, but we were disappointed. I personally would have loved a sort of Fantasia 2023 where all the characters come together in a full length movie, with Mickey leading them to a special place where they could meet Disney himself. All the villains could attempt to stop them or smth. There could have been experimental animation, bringing back 2D animators to give interviews. A combination of 2D, 3D, live action, That would have been so cool! Disney did this in a short, but heck! It was too short. 100 years deserved a 100 minute movie about it. Wish was too bland for all our expectations. It simply didn't come out in the right year. Had it come out in 2024, we wouldn't be so upset maybe, but it definitely shouldn't have been marketed as THE movie to mark the 100th anniversary. It was like a bland tasteless cake at a very fancy wedding. Wish

Disney could REALLY benefit from a movie that is purely art without worrying if the characters can be turned into cheap merchandise. Asha being black could've been deeper than just representation. She's was SUPPOSED to symbolize the comeback of 2D animation, and the last 2D animated movie by Disney was The Princess & The Frog which also had a black female lead. This should've been the moment to finally depict a black woman in fiction in a fantastical manner besides turning her into a FROG.

If not Menken, then why not Lin-Manuel Miranda? Or the Lopez’s? Or maybe even Pasek and Paul? I feel like they could do a great Disney musical. @CalxiynCaresTooMuch

Yeah I truly have no idea what they were thinking - what would have been a great symbol would have been to hire a different composer + lyricist team for each song. Let me tell you a story: my grandfather (who I mention in this video) immigrated here (to Canada) from Italy. He started washing dishes, and worked his way up to owning a construction company. After years of hard work, he was able to afford sending his children to university, he built a cottage for them to enjoy, they built a big house, got all the things they were promised. He saved everything he could so when he died, his children could maintain the cottage and the house. He wanted to leave something behind. When he died, the government came for every singe cent. My family is forced to sell the house he built because the government is asking for so much money. And the cottage probably won’t be far behind. In the governments eyes, my grandfather made a “profit” because the “home” has increased in value. Even though we had no plans to sell it, and the current value is a reflection of Canada’s horrible housing market / crisis. My family is actually worse off compared to if he didn’t leave anything at all, because the government wants money that doesn’t exist. (Hence that we have to sell his house/the cottage, and it hasn’t sold). People have to take out loans or borrow money some other way just to get the government off their backs until they can sell the property they never wanted to have to sell! It no longer benefits anyone to die with anything more than a primary residence, and anything less than $50,000. They are taking everything he built. When I talk about the failed dream, that’s what I mean. I’m glad you haven’t experienced that, but it’s coming for all of us sooner or later. It won’t be easily noticed when you get here, but it will be felt when you try to build generational wealth for your own kids and they’ll be left with nothing. Idk about the US but I hear similar things down there too. People have to open their eyes.

My problem with criticism is that people often criticize a piece of art for it not being exactly what they wanted. Like there's a difference between a story having narrative flaws and the story not following the narrative someone created in their head. I once saw someone critizing a movie because it was a comedy and he wanted it to be a serious drama. Creators can't read your head and their view of the art they make might different from yours, so I don't think it's fair to hold them to a standard you created in your own head. I think an important part of criticism is being able to meet a piece of art on their own terms. You shouldn't criticize a movie for not living up to your personal standards, you should critize it for not living up to the standards it set for itself.
@CalxiynCaresTooMuch
@CalxiynCaresTooMuch 3 месяца назад
Yeah that’s fair. That’s why when I personally do rewrites I try to approach it from “there’s what would fulfill the message I think this thing was trying to have” as opposed to changing it to personally suit my taste. Like when I talk about the entire movie in depth (scene by scene) I’ll explain this more, but if they want Magnifcio to be as he is for example, there are ways to change certain scenes to make that stronger. Vs just making Magnifcio evil. Even still Magnifcio being evil is a reflection of what people want. And so I think there’s a middle ground when it comes to telling a story for the audience. You need to be true to your own vision but also understand, especially for a fairytale, what the needs of the people are.
