Why We Moved to the UK

In 2020, my Wife and I sold our home, got new jobs and moved our family of six to the United Kingdom. As an African American father, I did not want to raise my children with only an American. perspective of the world... or with only American perspective of what it means to be Black.
Someday I will move back to America... but not today.

I’m an American and been living in the U.K. for almost two years now. The number one thing I like is Diversity especially here in South London. I lived in New York and then Atlanta for most my life and it still felt segregated in Atlanta. You had the black neighbourhoods, Spanish, and white neighbourhoods. Here in London you can see different cultures and race living in the same estate. I also met more Jamaicans here than I ever did in my life. I love the U.K. and will apply for citizenship in the next couple years.

I love all races and am happy for them to come to my Country but I don’t like segregation and I don’t want the U.K. to be an Islamic State with Islamic Laws and Rules. If Europeans weren't so racist then colour wouldn't matter. Europeans want to tell black people how they should feel and how they should behave. Fellow American here, been thinking about moving to the UK from California to give myself a chance to explore a different culture & way of living. I know the experience will be challenging, but I think it’ll be a very worthwhile one. I had a chance to date some British men and I was blown away by the general respect & integrity I’ve been treated with. Funny thing was, that opened my eyes to the possibility of exploring the UK. I’m so happy I stumbled upon your channel! Will be watching the rest of your videos and live vicariously through you and your beautiful family!

I think you will find that as a nation of like minded people, we are loyal, honest and trustworthy and you will get support and help when you come across things you are unsure of or not used to (like the weather! Always take a coat and a brolly even on the hottest of days in the Summer! 😁) I look forward to seeing more of your videos and seeing how you getting in and settling down on our funny little island, our green and pleasant land. 🙂🇬🇧🏴󠁧󠁢󠁥󠁮󠁧󠁿

Welcome to England, Mac. Lived here all my life and still nowhere close to exploring all the points of interest. There is *so* much more to us than London. We're *all* much friendlier and interesting, and none of us like London or Londoners :). A _friendly_ rivalry I'm sure you are soon to encounter. Basically, stick a pin in a map and you're pretty much going to find something beautiful or interesting, and *our* history goes back thousands of years, not hundreds. That can kind of get addictive, too. Anyway, all the best to you and yours. We apologise in advance for the weather.

The rivalry you speak of is one sided and pathetic to most Londoners. You all seem to have an unhealthy obsession with the U.K. leading city, that props the rest of us up, but doesn’t think about you.

Great ethos you have. I’ve lived and/or worked in the Far East. USA Australia and Europe. My children were born in China, Hong Kong, Malaysia and number four England. I feel it gave my family the Opportunity to experience different cultures, cuisines and religions. I thank goodness for working for a company that gave me these opportunities. Do as much as you can, your children will grow up more rounded and with respect for others. Part of my work was in the cocoa industry and Africa is both beautiful and concerning. The problems with despotic regimes are well documented but beneath that it’s a beautiful continent. Good luck in you future adventures.

Every time I watch one of your videos, I am more and more impressed with what a fine man you are. This one has impressed upon me how intentional you have been about raising your family. I have no idea why any black person would want to stay in America but as an old white guy I probably lack the perspective. Racism is ugly from any perspective but it's direct affect on me is not that great. It hurts deep down inside, not in my pocket book or in my opportunities. I just root for you to be able to raise your family with love and kindness. It's people like you who give me hope for humanity. Something we are losing in America.

It's good to hear such a vote of confidence in our country, as you will have noticed on RU-vid there are other Americans who have come to the same decision. One of the reasons that we don't categorise people here on the basis of their genetic background is that most of us come from very mixed heritages, there having been immigration here for over 2000 years. (I am half Lithuanian, quarter Irish and quarter English, my wife is half Afro-Caribbean, quarter Scottish and quarter English, and that's just going back a 100 years or so! And we view ourselves as English.) If you and your family are good decent people that means that America's loss is our gain.

Welcome to the UK 🇬🇧 What a fantastic and brave decision you’ve made for you and your family. My father was in the British Army so we moved around a lot from posting to posting. In fact, I was born in Germany and have lived in Cyprus, England, Germany again, Belize and back to the UK. After the Army he had a job that took us to Hong Kong. My dad made sure we embraced the culture of wherever we were living and I feel extremely lucky to have travelled to so many countries before I was 20. I’m quite a bit older now (54) but I still love to travel and immerse myself in the local culture, food, etc. Your children will thank you for this wonderful opportunity you have given them. I know I’m grateful to my dad for giving our family experiences that were extraordinary. I hope you and your family enjoy your stay here and good luck with your future adventures xxx

Welcome to the UK 🇬🇧 No guns necessary, health care at your fingertips, and the best thing is, it doesn’t matter if you are white, black, brown, purple, green, red or striped, in most parts of this country if you are polite and nice to people you will receive the same treatment in return, enjoy the freedom, the culture, the relaxed behaviour of the UK. Scotland has some amazing scenery and the history is amazing to hear. Ireland is one of my favourite places to visit, I’ve never seen a leprechaun though. I’ve always considered that I have been extremely lucky in my life: good health, educational opportunities ( mostly funded by the government), a stable home environment, etc. Listening to you, however, I realise that I was in some ways deprived: as a child I saw seamen of Middle Eastern origin around the dock area of the port where my grandmother lived, but I didn’t see a Black person my age until I was about 13, and I didn’t personally know a Black person until I went to university in 1962. Even now, because my social contacts are mainly with others of my own generation, there are relatively few non-whites among them. You have arrived in a UK which is vastly more diverse than it was in those days ( though certainly not entirely free of racism and ignorance), and your children, with your guidance, will grow up much more open-minded than we were. I hope you will also encourage them, among other pursuits, to become fluent in another language - it scarcely matters which one, because that ability makes the next language easier to learn. We who were born into anglophone communities have a very rich linguistic heritage, but there is so much more out there. I realise I’m preaching to the choir here, but I wish there were more people like you and I applaud your willingness to share your wisdom. Every little helps!

I like the reasoning behind your decision to move. I left the UK nearly 30 years ago, initially to go travelling, but after a few years backpacking I settled down, established a business and am now lucky enough to have been able to retire in the Philippines with my family. I go back to the UK intermittently, primarily now as a tourist, but I doubt if I will be returning permanently. I respect your desire to see all aspects of the UK as it can be a wonderful experience travelling around the country.

This will be a big adventure for you and all the family. There will be times when you all get homesick (especially the kids), but there will also be times when you really love the adventure and challenge and your new home. Welcome here :). The UK may be tiny compared to the US, but it is packed, so there are so many things to see and explore. England alone is vastly different from north to south, let alone adding Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland. And of course, Europe is on our doorstep. So, it sounds much like you came during COVID. Well, all I can say is that it is a better place outside of that. We have lost so many shops, restaurants, cafes and businesses, but hopefully these will come back. Oh, and your kids will develop a British accent of sorts ;) Probably a mixed one. It will most likely sound American to those here, but when they go back to the US, people will notice the difference. That is a good thing of course. My accent is all over the place from all the countries I've lived in. Anyway, I've started watching your videos and subscribed to your channel, so looking forward to more. They're wonderful. Oh, you say you're in the Midlands... is that the Birmingham area or the other side around Nottingam?

As a Londoner, all I can say is, "please visit Wales, the people are lovely, I felt very safe on the beach at Caswell Bay at 3am, with my cousins, watching bioluminescent plankton turn the waves a beautiful shade of electric blue. A lovely group of locals left us the fire they built and we walked ankle deep only into the sea and threw stones in, just to watch the glow of the water it was mesmerising. We went mackerel fishing the next day and indoor crazy golf on our last day there. I'm sure your family will love Wales, it's a very special place, the Welsh are awesome 💞
