When it comes to raising chickens on the homestead, hens have their place. But there are times when it takes a rooster to get the most out of your flock.

Cool to see they survive shipping and are up and about mmediately. I will have to look up a new term I heard “pasty butt”.

The baby chicks! Omg my heart~!~!! The little cheeps!! AHH!! So cute!!! I love watching them too! Question though: are roosters one of those animals that won’t brutally fight each other if females aren’t present? (aside from general pecking order of course.)

Where did you buy that rope-like fence that you use for your chickens? I can't find it anywhere and I really like it.

Fascinating information. I really love sitting and watching the baby chicks too. 🥰🐣🐥 I’m interested in the meat aspect of chickens, however I am not sure if I’ll ever be able to do it. I’m having a hard enough time with the 7 extra roosters we hatched this summer that no one wants. Gonna make a rooster coop for them. We are experimenting on how to keep multiple roosters. This should be interesting or a complete disaster. 💁🏻‍♀️😂

Good to know! This is our 3rd year raising our own. We always did mix but may look into just males. We noticed a big difference last year. This will be our first year with the chicken tractor. Prior we moved dog panels, that was rough 😅

None at all. They aren’t “fired up” enough by the time we process that we see rooster egos getting in the way of everybody getting along.

Hey Jack, I know zip about raising chickens, so just curious...if you observe a "compromised" chick or two in your initial 20 min observation, can you take steps to mitigate and improve their chances?
@TheMindfulHomestead
@TheMindfulHomestead Год назад
Sometimes. Usually a shot of electrolytes and/or sugar will get them up and going if it’s just dehydration or a chill from the trip. Some folks make something called “magic water” and give that to their chicks which is a mix of honey and apple cider vinegar. If we need it, we use a product called Rooster Booster which includes carbs, electrolytes and probiotics. We’ll usually isolate the chick as well so the others don’t gang up on it, until we can figure out what’s going on and what the prognosis is.

DO YOU PURCHASE ALL MALE TURKEYS AS WELL?
@TheMindfulHomestead
@TheMindfulHomestead Год назад
We don’t. Some people want smaller turkeys for Thanksgiving, so we order a mix.

Have you tried feeding brand new chicks moistened food for the first little while? I’m wondering if maybe this would help to prevent pasty butt in the new arrivals; they would be hydrating at the same time as eating.

Crazy, isn’t it?
@a15thcenturysuitofgothicarmor
@The Mindful Homestead Not really, it's quite common in most creatures, although pointing it out in humans can get you canceled. 🤷🏻‍♂️
