Love the JOP shout out. I don't think people understand how good he was. I was a friend/acquaintance of JOP back in the day and I went to one competitive Tekken tournament back when T4 was released on console. I wasn't good by any means, but JOP wanted to play with me in the doubles tourney for TTT. I literally did nothing. The man played True Ogre and solo'd the entire tournament. He also still gave me half the winnings even though he could have won with the venue's janitor. Great dude. We became friendly all because of our mutual love for Hulk Hogan haha. Sidenote: JOP also won the T4, TTT singles and Soul Calibur tournament that day. I hope he's doing well. I lost contact with him a few years ago. I was a nobody in the Tekken scene, but he never treated me like that.
Definitely. People who joined the FGC after TTT probably don't really know who he was, or how insanely talented the dude is. Heck, if you recall, he got 3rd place at Evo 2011 in MK9. All of the people Brady shouted out are legends in the scene for anyone who knows their history. It kind of makes me sad seeing that a lot of the newer players who are joining the scene don't take any time to learn the history of their scene and know the old school legends who led the way. I'm not saying it's everyone, but I'd wager it's the majority. Like Street Fighter players who don't know about Tomo, Mike Watson, Jeff Schaeffer, the Wolfe brothers, Jason Cole, Shirts, etc. History is important.
@@Skkra Yup, I definitely recall his run in MK9 at EVO because I texted him right after it ended. He told me he really wanted to win to show how broken and stupid that game was. For the record, I loved and still do love MK9, but it was funny that he nearly won EVO playing a game he didn't even care about.
I love the beginning of how you said the player who loses in last place shows up to every tournament deserves more praise. I agree, I used to be horrible and bad at my game now even though it is small I got to be very successful. This why I always try to help players who are seriously trying to learn. Also fun is a core force for nit just games but every hobby (which you said).
As that person (which my best run was top 16 at local "major" on a 64+ pool) i love to talk to people at tournaments and compete with them (mostly at sf6), ive met a lot of people from all ages (my scene has a lot of old heads who play alpha 3, mostly because of arcademia, that is exactly what the name implies) that share their life exp and stuff, its a great way to socialise through a game Edit:i forgor academia in portuguese translates to gym
@@canalcoloradoaado congrats on that I only had success in Virtua Fighter and won a few majors but that game usually has low turn out beside Japan. Yea the social aspect and helping folks feel.welc9med and get better is a must
It is. 9 is still fun. UKM3 as well! I was.so excited.for MK1. I really was. Then I saw Sonya isn't on the roster. But Omniman, Peacemaker and Homelander are....... Yes DLC, but no Sonya??!! This was, to me, meant to be Injustice 3 and, for whatever reason, they had to change it to MK. Only thing that makes sense. It doesn't feel like either game due to this. Equally glad and sad that I skipped this. From a lifelong MK fan.
With today's dumbed-down "Modern" fighters, there is no reason why a 98-year-old could not still be competitive in this increasingly watered-down game genre.
@@arjunratnadevTom gets worked in tekken and then goes on a rant about reflexes, his declining age, and starts talking about how nobody on stream cares about him. Then he’ll figure out some way to tangent into his competitive history from 20 years ago. After about an hour of playing tekken he’ll talk about his viewership and say something like “you guys (the chat) don’t really want to see me play tekken.” Then he’ll uninstall, blame chat for not supporting him enough, then shut down stream. Rinse repeat in 12 hours.
Actually, MK1 offers more than just poke, poke, poke and throws. You can incorporate various movements like forward, backward and jump into your gameplay.
I don't care what you said about not covering this game anymore! Keep On Burying this game because MK1 deserved better. What the devs have done is Shambolic.
Gameplay-dead Casual scene-dead Competitive scene -dead Lore-dead Character designs-dead I used to say I'll play mk3, mk9 and mkx until mk12 actually releases but i was wrong. I'll be playing mk3, mk9 and mkx for the rest of my life. No amount of patches, dlc or aftermath story will repair my current opinion of this franchise. It's gonna take alot to put me back on track. Living in a third world country isn't looking so bad now because our mkx scene is just now starting to grow. It's like the game just released this year. So yeah, thanks wb and/or nrs. It was fun while it lasted.
Bro stop acting like mk1 is bad you just want to agree with everything this dude says says. The gameplay is amazing the casual scene isn’t supposed to be that popular and how is lore dead it’s a reboot and new timeline I know the game isn’t perfect like invasions and ranking your character are annoying but stop acting like everything about the game isn’t bad bro
Gameplay "died" post-MKX... Injustice 2 was the final vestige of vaguely playable NRS games; everything since has been a humiliation ritual of the associated brand/s and genre.
I say keep up the MK videos man. You are probably THE most passionate MK player I know, and I say this as someone who regularly has sessions with friends where we're grinding MK2, 3, and 9 the entire day.
MKXL and injustice 2 was peak (before the DLC ruined that game). Mk11 was a step back x20 MK1 is a beta and I'm not going to consider it a game till it's complete. Till then it's complete garbage.
Dude, I drove countless miles and spent hundreds of quarters to get decent at the game. It’s hard for kids to understand what we era we grew up in. I loved every minute of that time. I met lifelong friends who were very much like me. It was a different time and I was glad I lived through it.
This is very genuine video. Especially, the comments at 2:50. Well done this time, Tom. The tournament players who are putting their time in need to be better appreciated by the Kasuals/Konsumers/Komplainers because it's a huge difference between MK and say Tekken. You're not going to hear OnlyPro or Sweat without looking and sounding dumb in the other communities. That's because they have solidarity. Good video.
This EVO shows how games made with love and passion will be played until the end of times like the Marvel vs Capcom games or 3rd Strike Nobody is going to play MK1 2023 in 5 or 10 years or remember with love like MK 1-3 or MK9 & X
MK is one of my favorite games of all time. The first one I played was MK2 on the Super Nintendo. Ever since then I’ve been a huge fan. That and MK Trilogy were two of the games that I played the most as a kid. It’s a shame what’s happened to the franchise in recent years, and even though sales are still high, I think that MK has lost its identity over the years and there is definitely a lack of passion within the player community. NRS/WB have rubbed a lot of people the wrong way with MK1. Even some of the most dedicated MK content creators have had enough of it.
The problem with MK is it doesn't last long enough to have an identity past the casual let's see all the fatalities stage. It's become the cod of fighting games with a new game every 2 years or so, meanwhile tekken and street fighter are being played for 5 years or more and there's still new shit being figured out but MK1 was sorted in a month.
Tom’s match vs GGA Wafflez in mk9 Smoke vs Sub Zero is actually what brought me back to mortal kombat. It was something about that match that drew me in.. So exciting to watch and even more exciting to play. I love the high octane of mk9 and mkx.. Been bored ever since we stopped playing those games. Quit mk11 early and didn’t even get mk1. Ironic that the match that brought me in, ended up being the last short I ever uploaded…
Hey! Tom I just wanted to say I always appreciate your passion for these games and your commentary during matches. Even though I always liked fighting games you are a big reason I buckled down and finally got good at one, MK9. That was a special time for the franchise. Your living guide and the Tom Brady show elevated my enthusiasm for the game and the genre as a whole. Its sad to see MK slowly decline after MK9. At the time I thought it was going to go up from there. Hopefully MK can find it's way back and be relevant again. I love these videos. Keep it up man!
That guy that keeps going to tournaments, traveling out of town to MK tournaments only to get last places - that me. MK3 was the most fun for me. The characters, the names, the fighting, it so much fun to play. Mind you I also played extensively Killer Instinct, Street Fighter, War Gods and what you you during the 90’s, but it was MK3 that I fell so passionately about. And yes, the gore had nothing to do with it.
Tom, I’ve followed the experience you have shared with us over the years since 2015. To me, You’ve always been lord Brady, best sub zero to walk the face of the planet. And I know you have a very storied past, and some times go off the rails. But I understand it’s because you are so passionate and your love for the franchise is deep in your blood, Youve given most of your life at this point to the franchise, you have one of the most successful video game careers ever in my opinion. 25 years a competitor and lover of the franchise. I don’t think anyone on the planet besides ed boon has dedicated to mortal kombat as much as you have. No one on the planet can truly understand your perspective. You’ve been here the whole time and never left. You deserve your flowers, and just know that I appreciate your position in our community and your legacy as a player, competitor, RU-vidr, podcaster, teacher, and everything else you’ve done. I wish more people understood just how important you and your voice are, to those of us who respect everything that came before to lead up to mk1 currently. And I would just like to say thank you for sticking around and always being yourself, for better or worse, and for speaking up when no one else can see the problem or willing to speak on it themselves.
Don’t listen to the haters. I know you said your not making MK1 videos but it’s not realistic. As they keep fucking up, there is always going to be discussions pointing it out.
100% agree. I play K.I 2013 on my twitch channel (its small only a couple 100 followers) But you know what.....I LOVE playing K.I and play that over several games even now. I just love Killer Instinct 2013.
This isn't even one of the big issues of the game but just watching Kitana gameplay reminds me why I cannot play her. Her animations are stiff a fuck especially her kicks. I know the fgc criticising NRS animations is a thing but they do have a point, as great as the graphical fidelity of the games are, the animations are so far behind and I cannot unsee it.
During Mk11 I told these sheep the comp scene was only playing for money back then. That game is buns and so is MK1 If they announce a 10k tournament for MKXL or injustice 2 RIGHT NOW nobody would look in MK1 direction.
as someone who has started playing in tournaments with this MK, what you said about the tournament bonds is TRUE! i've met some many dope individuals in the tournament scene some i still play with outside of tournaments and played against honeybee, grr, mkunjust, etc. its really been a dream come true even if i never win. its all about the experience for me, meeting people who love the game (who REALLY love the game) and playing against pros i admire is AMAZING for someone whose played this game since it was on arcade machines. youtube has changed my life and so has MK.
I guess the players registrated present the current status of the game, but I think it is slightly different for KOF. Im just sad that KOF players keep getting their VISAs denied. We missing a lot of the talent I've seen from big tournaments.
The majority of people around me didn't even know how to do fatalities back in the arcade days. People 6 to pump me up because I was usually the only one. Unless out at the arcades with the greater public. But at home, friends or family, I was the only one. People came back because it was fun, not because of the gore.
We loved MK as a kid, in 2011 after we watched you vs Chris G, we got back to MK and all of us started using Subzero, i always hyped when you showed up in tournaments since then
Everything you said was spot on Tom. I came into this community because I genuinely fell in love with mkx. As I child I thought the games were cool but as a teenager I finally learned how to string together combos and after that, it’s history. I loved going to locals, meeting new people and I loved going to the big events. I wish I could say I would still go but mk was and will forever be the only franchise that captivated me.
I miss the days of deadly alliance running home from school to playing with my brothers and uncle mk1 is so hard to get passionate about gawd I miss mk9 staying up to 5 am with the boys in king of the hill just talking sh**
@@matts8715 then why aren't they buying them, why is MK1 the only fighting game still in the top 20 best selling games recently it's almost as if SF6 and T8 are just as braindead as MK1 but with way worse rosters that nobody cares to play with Ryu is doing Shin Shoryuken as his lvl 3 for the 20th game nobody new is going to be excited with that
What you said abou character loyalty is so true. In Street Fighter I play Akuma since Alpha 2 and Cammy since Super SF2. In MK I play Skorpion since the original. In Tekken I play Jin since Teken 3. So I get it.
Dude I feel bad because I never knew how hilarious your vids are since I haven't liked Mortal Kombat since MK3. And therefore have not watched hardly any MK content except for some tournament highlights and the random bits of MK drama that break through periodically. Your MK1 videos are some of the funniest on the game.
Great video, Tom. We really are blessed to have so many passionate and talented people in fighting games. A fighting game NEEDS to be fun first and foremost. No one is going to take a beating in a game they don't find fun without stakes i.e money like you said
With tekken and sf it's more like ppl enjoy the game enjoy the characters and it's a bonus that they get to play at tournaments with mk I think it's more like the job you don't like but you still gotta show up because you need the money
SF6 EVO finals and Tekken 8 finals were super hype. Punk winning was a great look for the SF FGC. Well-deserved and earned. The crowd was into it and filled the entire allotted space. MK1 top 6 had 1/4 of the crowd lol. While MK1 had a shitty mirror match and of course the same people making top 8 and Sonic winning again. At least SF and Tekken have different people winning their majors every tournament. Can't wait for Capcom Cup. MK1 is done at the competitive scene. CEO with no Pro Comp points attached to it got like 150 people. EVO only got 642 when the competition had 5,279 & 4,651 people compete. Even the anime games had more than MK1 LOL
Like my older brother always said when it comes to characters in any fighting games and picking different characters, and yes it's a old saying for a lot of things, "Don't fix something that isn't broken".
THATS MY SUB ZERO GOAT 🗣💯🔥 Tom you've made me double down on sub zero since I've been playing him since the 3d Era. You made me appreciate the ice clone so much more. Idc what big name talks down on u, I believe in the passion you have for the fgc and mortal kombat
Its sad to see that the mentality of some people be focused on money and how can this be profitable instead of playing and doing things for passion. I go to my local card shop and play games all the time becuase I love sharing the passion with others. I know that it is a lot of money to play some of the games that i do but i enjoy the game and the experience. I am starting to feel that way about MK. I recently met a group of friends who play mk and have started to learn the game after not playing since Injustice 2. They have been great and its been a good time, glad I bought the game
I see a lot of legacy from MKX with Takeda. My only question is is why the other characters from that game like Liu Kang and Lao didn't benefit from legacy. Liu Kang could've had his Duelist aspect return with the blue and red fire 🔥 Fire ball cancels Have air fire ball shoot one and MB fire ball does the flurry it does now. And a dragon parry. This is just an example of merging all his variations into one character. Imagine if we got this in MK1 😮 This is why people don't play MK1
I love sub zero, i didnt just play sub zero for 25 years I WAS sub zero u better believe the reason clone is trash is because i existed Lord Brady has laid down the gauntlet
I absolutely love my characters in fighting games and that's what truly made me love MK. But I hate how there is no legacy system whatsoever and my characters play different in every game. Sub and Scorp and the other ninjas have been my favs forever and I hate what most have become in this game. But luckily I can go to my other childhood favs: Ryu in SF, King and Paul in Tekken. I may reinstall MK1 to press buttons on Takeda but I'll delete it again shortly after
The casuals love mortal kombat because even though its sometimes a trash fighting game, its usually a fun videogame. You play through story with characters you’ve grown to love in all the other games story modes, you play the fun modes like challenge towers or living towers or whatever they decide to add. Play through arcade to get your own characters crazy ending. Theres a reason mk1 is getting a lot of flack from casuals this time and its more because modes are absent theres nothing to do, the gameplay sucks but theres nothing to facilitate longterm casual players. Remember mk11 online co-op challenges? That shit was sick. The krypt was an adventure mode of its own. Wtf does mk1 have? Invasions… thats it. Your just left with the trash gameplay and casuals don’t like the kameos. Its weird that the competitive scene pretends this isn’t the case. The gameplay isn’t bad look at the sales! 95% of these people buying the game dont give 2 shits about the gameplay. Thats why no one comes to tournaments. They will still buy the game and play through story mode but they aren’t trying to play that shit for real lol. if they wanted to actually play a competitive fighting game they’ll go play street fighter or tekken because those games are actually designed with that in mind, while mk just keeps shifting further and further away from that.
My journey was different. After i beat people on the big stage there was a lot of salt. Obviously valle was cool but plenty of other tekken greats didnt care for my playstyle and let me know after they lost. I always was neber a character loyalist. Named after king but barely used him competitively agter 3. Changed characters based on feel and meta. If there was nobody i clicked with id grab a high or top tier i kinda vibed with.
Bro they fumbled in the beginning but right now they constantly adding Things to the Game that Form IT to what WE Wannt IT to be The new kameos Features Look really good
I remember my brother would always play scorpion and I would always play sub zero in all mk games we had and then mk1 ruined our boys, I still play like once a week but he doesn’t at all and i can see why
Best MK Tournament moment in the last 10 years was NinjaKilla taking out the twins that was awesome to watch. I can't stand the super hero kombat pack, what a missed opportunity from NRS. So many great MK characters to choose from and we get that garbage. That's really my biggest problem with the game and kombat pack 2 is more of the same.
Tom did you see the Takeda Kombat kast ? I really think MK1 is going to make a comeback like sfv did. Takeda looks sick and doesn't relay on cameo's to get stuff done. If he is the standard that they are going to move forward with then I think MK1 is going to be so much better 🤞
Well hopefully NRS had a wakeup call this week. They shut down their Mobile division and laid off most of the staff and a few console people to boot. Some mobile survive and merged onto the console team. Onslaught is hot trash. And I highly doubt MK1 MTX is selling well, and they still haven't cracked 5 million units otherwise we'd see an X announcement or articles.
@@mlo009 WB looked at the sales figures of MK vs Injustice, and of course, MK beats it. But IMHO I think an Injustice 3 with Kameos would have done better than MK1 (current meta). Now, if MK1 was just straight MK9 1v1 with a tag mode on the side and no Kameos then MK1 definitely would have cracked 5 million units in the first 30 days.
Been going to CEO every year since 2014. I go 1 - 2 and drown in pools literally EVERY SINGLE TIME I go. I'm not there to win money, I'm there to have fun. I enter to make sure the tournament has enough entrants to keep going for another 10 years. The fact that people aren't playing MK 1 because they aren't going to win money is telling.
Watching Takeda gameplay and wondering why tf Raiden is still vanilla bland non fat gluten free boring level 9000, i love Raiden and hate mk1 whole team can sugma balls for ruining Raiden in mk1 and mk11
You’re not totally wrong but Tom, the game is way better and more fun than MK11. And more creative and expressive, too. But I guess I do get the pain of loving a franchise and seeing it pussyfoot around making an actually GREAT game. MKX was not that long ago
I know this might sound petty but what the hell is with the music/battle tracks in the MK franchise.....im playing guilty gear strive, tekken 8, sf6 dragon ball fighterz they ALL have banging soundtracks that we can customize with a jukebox kind of thing to spice up the experience. All you get in MK is the same ambient menu music just like injustice you wont even notice the battle tracks.... which is a shame because it would really spice things up if they did the extra stuff...but to me music is very important in fighting games that's why i think SF AND TEKKEN take it so seriously
There's probably half of the comment section who still plays thus game and they will come back to this game if they improve. Let's be honest. I can see this game making a comeback. This game is not worth leaving the whole community for, imo I have faith in Netherealm
