What a beautiful farm! I LOVE, love love Buff Orpingtons!! My favorite Buff rooster, Gimli, was so friendly and gorgeous. He followed me like a puppy. A couple of years ago two raccoons found a way into the coop and wiped it out. We trapped them and a friend dispatched them. It took me a while to realize that all breeds aren't as personable and friendly as buffs. Last fall I finally got more Buffs to fill out the flock and already I feel more attached.

So glad I found your channel. You guys are adorable!!! Saw you on R&Refuge and hear Living traditions HS talk about you all the time. My hubby and I live in the city, I’m a RN and he is a Veterinarian. We just bought a house on 10 acres here in California Central Valley and we want to quit the rat race and become full time homesteaders. I am soaking up everything I can to get ready!! Your channel is a wonderful resource and inspiration 😍

Nice livestock tour, I enjoyed that. Yes, I've got 21 olive eggers in the works, we'll do that. Around May I'll be able to start hatching Whiting True Blues that lay blue eggs like Ameraucanas. I'm going to try to talk you into a few of those to compare with the Ameraucanas to see which is the better blue egg layer for our area. Thank you!

My favorite breed of chickens are the show Rhode Island Reds. I have never had a mean rooster from the Rhode Island Reds, they love being picked up and carried around. I have raised Ameraucas, they're fairly good egg layers. The roosters can get mean, the are smaller birds but the taste is great. Horses are my favorite animal, I love to train horses and to ride. One of my dreams is to train wild Mustangs so that they can find good homes. They are very smart and on e they start trusting you, they bond with you.

another good video. I am seriously thinking about quail now. My mom (years ago) was flogged by our bronze tom when she was coming in from milking. She whopped him with that galvanized milk pail. He was tasty, too! lol

Great set up. We had Holstein. We are debating a black agus steer and/or pigs. Y'all bout have me talked into spots. Buffs have been my primary chicken (though I'm down on numbers right now, due to the move) for the dual purpose. And debating on bees. Like to here more of opinion on them. I love cows as well but I'm getting (younger) and I'm the primary farm hand so trying to keep things to where I can tend to myself easier. Thanks really happy for you guys..great way to live..xoxox

Have you ever heard of American Aberdeen cattle? We raise them and they are gentle and easy to take care of. They do well in the cold and you get more meat in return when you harvest them. Watch some videos from Given Chances Farm (our farm channel) this is the breed we raise cause we can put 2 cow calf pairs on an acre of land compared to the full size.

I love getting to see so many different views of your country life. So, when my Dad retired from the military, we moved to SW MO and started out on two large lots, house in the front, chicken house on the back lot, so we got some chickens. They were so fun and the eggs were wonderful. Then my Granny sent a rooster home with us. That little nightmare sucked all the fun out of gathering the eggs. You'd have to try to sneak into the hen house and close their little door before he got in, or if he did get in, just leave and try again later. One day he beat me in there, but I was feeling stubborn, so when he attacked my legs, I kicked him about six feet up the wall. He lay still on the ground for about three seconds, then came after me again. This repeated for a while until I was the one who finally gave up and left. Mom didn't say anything when I told her, but when I got home from school the next day, the pressure cooker was going, and we had chicken and dumplings for dinner. Something was said about it not being exactly tender, and Mom said "He WAS a tough old bird, wasn't he?". Then I knew, and just smiled. Nothing else was said. Tough or not, it tasted extra good to me.

It tickles me that you're afraid of roosters but not afraid of bulls. I must admit, I'm a little afraid of everything. The only animals I ever had that didn't scare me at least a little were canaries, lol. But I do pretty good with my three laying hens now. Gonna try rabbits, too, I think. I always had Rhode Island Red roosters for many years and I thought roosters were all just mean. Now I have a Black Australorp rooster and he is great! He’s our second one and they have both been really calm and nice. They are good at taking care of the hens, but neither one has ever been aggressive at all. I think it depends on the breed.
