Like the previous commentator, the curtailed nature of summer 2020 has given me time to read alone together and philosophy of sailing. They were an impulse purchase after being mentioned in a Patrick Laine video. I haven't enjoyed two books so much in years. Thank you Christian (and Patrick).
“However the wind changes, we will set our sails in response.” This is the mindset of a person who experiences growth (and perhaps even thrives) through a situation like our current one. Without this attitude what does one have but grief and resentment? Brilliantly written (and narrated) as always. Thank you, sir.
Mr. Williams. You articulated some of my meandering thoughts today out on a day sail on a blustery, but warm Canadian summer day. And to top it off, you introduced me to Rose Murphy. This lady is the real deal and to think I’ve never heard of her before. Thank you for sharing you spirit and creativity.
Hi Christian, I recently viewed the Catamaran race footage you posted. I am a new E27 owner and while sharing the joy with a friend last night we motored into the basin in LA Harbor where the "Chowder Barge" is located and saw many Large Catamarans and Trimarans that are easily from the same era as your race. Thought you would like to know about them. You don't know it but you are my instructor and hero and thanks to you I solo sailed to Two Harbors a few weeks ago and it was one of the most glorious adventures of my life. Neptune gave me a hall pass and I have to remind myself that my first run was as good as it gets and not to expect it will be so the next time. If you ever think of adopting a boy I know of a good condition 52 year old who travels well and enjoys everything from Albion to Zoroaster. All the best to you and thank you for the instruction and inspiration. Keep a weather eye out for "Roxanne". She is an old gal but she still has all her teeth.
You are very much an inspiration to sailors. I rewatch your videos when I feel nervous leaving port in not favoring weather. Thank you for your knowledge and calming attitude.
Thank you. Thanks for your calm and so experienced point of view on the world today, so brilliantly tempered by your experiences of yesteryear. My boat is my refuge. It is the one single place where I can be free. It is the only place where I feel sane. It grounds me. Reminds me of my insignificance. Sailing shows me in every instant how minor I am and how important it is for me to pay attention to what nature is saying. If sailing doesn't humble you, then honestly I don't know what will.
Thank you again Christian, you place us all in the moment, but also provide us with philosophical context and your words of wisdom, which helps me at least keep things in context, and look to the future and the 'Summer', not the difficulties of the present. Like many I appreciate and enjoy what you do sir, and grateful for it. Best wishes for the remainder of the year, and the ones ahead to you and those you love.
Sailing offers us purpose and vision and a connection to the universe. I couldn't imagine not having sailing in my life and feel rather sorry for those who don't. Thanks for all your inspiring videos.
Well done Christian Thanks for helping us look ahead and behind... I love jazz but find that I have only scratched the surface. Thanks for the introduction to Rose Murphy. Keep up the great work !
I think it was at the start of this summer that I watched you on your way to Hawaii and first gained an interest in sailing. Now I'm taking an RYA course & enjoying it very much. I've also watched many, many more sailing videos, but this one is the best. It doesn't just teach us about sailing, or entertain, it helps us understand the summer we're in.
Thanks for your content, Christian. I love your perspective and your stories. Thanks for putting your videos out into the world. Enjoy the rest of your summer!
"Why.." are my favorite episodes, aside from the going to Hawaii. And I appreciate your calling it "we". Seems more accurate, considering all the different thoughts up there. We'll be standing by, thanks!
Always a pleasure to find a new edition of these little gems at the intersection of thought and deed. Thanks for sharing your prose and wonderfully wry wit.
Dear Mr. Williams, Thank you again for creating and sharing an uplifting video. Just wanted to share that not only am I still enjoying your books but, inspired by you, my family and I have started boating and sailing and I have even taken my baby steps into your suggested “toolbox of books. Philosophy and Sailing... who would have thought ? Thanks a million again and please keep them coming. Best regards from the Netherlands 🇳🇱 William Davis
Christian thanks for your reflections on sailing through this most difficult of times. Yep you're certainly right about social distancing on a boat or however you put it. A boat makes social distancing a joyous pastime. Thanks for your thoughts and reflections. From a land far away.
Sublime. It makes me so happy to watch your videos! Thank you Sir. Your eloquence and descriptive narrative offers such a great insight into not only Sailing and the great rewards it offers but also a wonderful outlook on life in a wonderful matter-of-fact way.
Great to see another post from you; you truly know how to capture the moment. I've passed this summer reading books you recommended--N by E, The Long Way, and of course Alone Together and Philosophy of Sailing. All were excellent. Thank you, sir!
Thank you so much for your Insight it's wonderful to see you again in which you bring such Joy To Me and one day hopefully I can get my boat ready for a sale maybe the same words in the different way will find paper. Thank you so much
Christian, You set the tone and reality to words of what I never even dreamed of what could and has happened to the World. WELL SAID. Robert North Star
I hear a vestigial New Jersey accent when you say “iced tea” that might be traceable to your summers on Barnegat Bay (something we have in common). You’ve developed a distinctive sort of poetry with your video logs. The imagery, the soliloquy, the music, and the cadence remind me of my favorite poems. Thanks for bringing summers, past, present, and future, into focus.
I live in Canada, i call it " land of cold " , summer is nice here but short, yes we live for summer, anything you love/like to do you can do it much easier and better in summer.
This is the antidote I needed to endless Biden vs Trump videos. So many wonderful turns of phrase. In particular, love the way you liken the dead of August and our Covid pause to that moment at slack tide in an anchorage where boats point every which way, or simply lying a-hull on the open water.
