The Benefits Of A Paleo-ketogenic Lifestyle
In this piece, Dr. Sarah Myhill, one of the world’s leading physicians in the fight against both Chronic Fatigue Syndrome and Myalgic Encephalomyelitis, is asked why we should eat a paleo-ketogenic diet. Her answer lays out the basis for her nutritional approach to both maintaining health and curing disease.
The harms of sugar and simple carbohydrates are plainly evident in our increasingly obese populations, in which chronic illness and dementias, cancers and heart and arterial disease are rife.
So what does the paleo-ketogenic diet offer us? Dr. Myhill explains that the PK diet gives us a way to eat a healthy, delicious, and well-rounded diet that is not dependent on sugars and carbohydrates for its calories. Human cells can derive energy from sugars or fats and fibres, and when we switch over into relying on the latter, we are eating in the way we have evolved to over a long period of our time on earth.
She points out that as more and more diseases are found to have an infectious driver or substrate when we eat PK, we are also starving the bacteria, yeasts, viruses, and protozoa that use sugars and carbohydrates as their fuel. They cannot thrive on fats and fibres, but we can. This represents one of our best means to avoid or treat infectious disease.
So if you want to live more vibrantly, stay at a healthy weight and sidestep many of the modern diseases of affluence, eat paleo-ketogenic. Dr. Myhill and her co-author, Craig Robinson, have written a book that’s for anyone who wants to do this. It is especially relevant to those suffering from long-term illness, and has been written in such a way that it’s both easy to follow, and put into practice.

To people who are asking why meat goes off when it's high in fat.. Yes, fruits and vegies are very high in carbs and sugar, and obviously the doctor's aim was to compare that to a very high fat food like butter. Very high carb vs very high fat, and the result shows that bacteria prefers the high carb food. About meat, bacteria feed in different ways. Heterotrophic bacteria, or heterotrophs, get their energy through consuming organic carbon. Most absorb dead organic material, such as decomposing flesh, and this is basically why meat goes off. Not because it has fat, but because some types of bacteria feed on dead organic material.

If kids were brought up on Sarah's Stone-Age diet, we would raise a very healthy generation. Unfortunately, moving over to this way of eating is not so easy to do! We need a shopping area that sells only foods allowed by a Paleo-ketogenic diet - with no 'temptations' on view to take us right back into old habits and cravings. Thanks for all your research on this Sarah - and thank you for sharing it.

Please note that there is nothing stone-age about the paleo diet. Most plants used did not exist in their current form. That's not to say it's not healthy, but tomatoes, avocados or even eggs were not available in their current form in the Paleolithic.

M. Poivron A shopping area of a PKD is a farmer’s market. I don’t bother with supermarkets at all - I buy all my food (meat) from a local organic farmer. Good luck with the diet 🙂

The food we eat has become so processed it doesn't take a rocket scientist to realise it cant be good for us. It's not just want we eat that has changed it's the amount and also we've become less active.

I've been doing keto for a couple months now and I don't feel any better. Less ups and downs without the carbs and sugar but no relief from life long chronic fatigue. Today I broke my keto with a pizza for fun. I got like a 40% energy boost which really benefitted me at work. I think I want to cycle on and off keto just to get my body able to do it but use carbs for I need them

I have had ME/CFS for years too. It took more than a couple of months to feel any better and it's working in layers. Eating pizza which is full of carbs will just make you feel worse. Go fully keto, stick with it, make sure you get lots of rest and pace yourself with work etc. It will help, good luck

That's exactly what I was thinking. Microbes may not eat fat. But they eat meat/ protein right? I'd like to know Dr. Myhill's response to this. I'm currently doing keto and would love to feel it's innoculating me from cancer, and all the infectious nasties, but is this really true Dr. Myhill?

Another fab video! Thank you! My only concern with the PK diet is the meat/fatty meat and resulting cholesterol - having watched "What the Health", I was considering steering clear of meat, but want to get well from ME so am in two minds now as to what to do!!

Your concern probably stems from the advice given by government departments that saturated fat is bad for us. There is quite often another reason for the advice given by a government body. We have to ask why they are giving it. Usually some financial gain somewhere! There are many articles written about fats. Coconut oil with its medium chain fatty acids is one of best to use. Please read up on coconut oil and listen to Dr Sarah Myhill. I am vegetarian, so Sarah's sausage and bacon breakfast is not for me but I do use a lot of coconut oil and there are alternative breakfasts! articles.mercola.com/sites/articles/archive/2010/10/22/coconut-oil-and-saturated-fats-can-make-you-healthy.aspx

I agree with the comments. We were vegan for years and I gained weight, my cholesterol was 213 and going up each year. I started paleo-keto a month ago and my cholesterol has dropped to 155!! Seriously so much better! My blood sugars were high before this diet too, now they are excellent. Do the blood work, see what happens. If your blood work isn't good after a couple months, change diets. Don't rely on other people to tell you what's good for your body. Look to your personal evidence: blood work, weight, blood pressure, etc.

Low carb diets give me anxiety/panic attacks. (BTW saturated oils/fats take longer to go off because they are insulated from oxidation. The less saturated a fat is, the faster it oxidizes.) Low carb diets also stress the adrenals. Hunter gatherers ate quite a bit of fruits, vegetables & starchy tubers, so how could they all have been on ketogenic diets? Weston Price described tribal peoples who were very healthy on a great variety of diets--until they added the white flour and sugar from the western diet.

hi, so you tell me that with hep c, eating me and fat will be my liver better??,
@LifeTheBasicManual
@LifeTheBasicManual 6 лет назад
Hi Maria, I think I have responded to you on another video. My answer was: "I was treated for Hep C back in 1998 when the regime was interferon alpha and ribavirin. I was lucky and cleared the virus. But I vividly remember how easy it was for the over-consumption of fat to nauseate me. I would suggest that you proceed cautiously and use your own experience and reactions, alongside liver function tests, to guide your way forward. Sorry I don't have a more definitive answer. Sian, LTBM team member" I might also add that as someone with a lifelong kidney disease, my version of paleo relies much more on the consumption of vegetables and fibre than fats and protein, including those provided by meat. I think each of us needs to find what works for us individually. There is a great source of further information and support available via the Support For Dr. Myhill's Protocol facebook group.

Why is it better than the plant based diet?
@iamrocketray
@iamrocketray 3 года назад
It isn't(IMHO), it's just another way to health, Our bodies are adapted to use whatever food is available, If you give it just a plant based diet it uses that and does very well, probably our distant ancestors were Vegan out of necessity. But when we discovered Fire, we could make flesh(easy protein) palatable and safe by cooking it, you can eat raw meat but it leaves you vulnerable to bacteria like salmonella. Things went wrong when we started processing foods and eating sugar and starch in unhealthy amounts, and our modern diet is based around starch(which converts to a sugar), just think Bread, Cakes Biscuits, Rice, jam, potatoes, fries, These have all become staples, and with takeaways being so convenient for modern man, it's no surprise we have overdone it. Sugar and processed grains are the killers, it's hard to overdo sugar on a plant based diet, even the sugar in fruit is metabolised in a different way to processed foods and is far less harmful, and whole grains(whole wheat bread and brown rice) are considered healthy in moderation. I personally CAN'T eat meat, just looking at it makes me feel ill, so This diet is impossible for me, BUT I can take some of the ideas behind it and adapt it, which is what us Humans are so good at.

One things I really don't understand about PKD is the fat to protein ratio of 2:1. I"m having a really difficult time finding real examples and I bought their $35 dollar diet guide and it does not go into detail really at all or give any examples. I'm struggling with this and really would like to know so I can stop eating wrong most likely. If I have say 1lb or 85/15 ground beef, how much more fat in say, suet or fat trimmings by weight do I need to add to get the 2:1? Is it 2lb to 1lb? They say dry weight by grams but I have no idea what the dry weight of fat or meat is! I wish they had a table, or ANYONE had a table with examples of different things in the right ratios for 2:1 fat to protein... Would be SO helpful. But here I am a total newbie to this considering doing all the math and making my own and having no idea what the heck I'm doing... I really like that you haven't given up use of your herbs and selectively other supplements while eating a PKD style diet. I could not bring myself to the thought that they couldn't or shouldn't be used as Peleomedicina recommends. I understand they are able to much more easily control their studies and results this way, however, herbs are powerful and certainly there must be some that could be used for various things for even greater synergistic effect. If you had a book on only that particular subject, or if anyone did with loads of experience from people I would buy the heck out of it.
