I'm a better oil painter than acrylic, but I'm trying to learn. I like to work wet on wet. I love the blending with oils and the sheen.

oil doesn’t exist to me. they would cease to exist if i had my way lol

You could build up layers with acrylic then finish with oils. If you don't want to use paint thinner, Windsor Newton makes an excellent line of water mixable oils.

I agree. When I paint realism, acrylics are definitely my choice. I love their versatility and, like you, I only use water and build up layers with glazes too.

Nice to see you both ,great insight as always ,I bought oil paints thinking I could create greater depth and detail ,maybe I'm just not doing enough layers in my acyrlic paintings i never know how many I should do to create depth thank you as always ,it would be great to see a video on blending the subject into the background as shown on Amber's beautiful painting x

I started with acrylics and later into oil paintings. I do wildlife, landscape and portraits. I converted our master bedroom into my studio😆 for well ventilated room. I mostly use M Graham brand which is less toxic and walnut alkyd for medium. I use walnut oil to clean my brush and soap "masters brush cleaner". I wear gloves and mask while I paint.😁 It's something I got used to doing. I think it's great when using acrylic for realism but I do it better with oil. Maybe.. someday I'll get back into acrylic again. 😊 You guys are awesome!👍😊

If you are using Gamsol as your mineral spirits and non toxic medium you really dont need the mask. Bit of overkill. Unless you are hyper sensitive

You two are amazing! The new Boris Vallejo and Julie Bell of wildlife painting! 😂 If you all ever get the chance I would love to see a Marvel character done in acrylic ! I was always told you couldn't achieve the realism you could with oil. You completely dispelled that myth! God bless the both of you!👍💯✌️🙏

I have only just found you from this video a bit random for the RU-vid algorithm as I have never painted animals and at the moment I am working on print making but I’m still going to follow for when I need these videos. And I will need them. I’m going to study fine art at uni

You can also use an acrylic paint drying retarder to slow down the drying time too of the paint. I use Nova brand acrylics & retarder. Work great for me.

Thank you for the great tutorials. I am an avid fan. I struggle to get especially my brights bright enough. Could this be because I am using good student grade paint and not artist quality paints? I do use many layers.

Thanks for this video! I started painting with the Golden Heavy Body and I have a lot of trouble making my paint mixtures opaque. I mainly paint leopards and when I paint the fur it's always too transparent. Do you have any advice for me?
@StudioWildlife
@StudioWildlife 2 года назад
With the heavy body acrylics I would just say use less medium, or water to make them less transparent. You could also add a small amount of white to your colour mix which is going to make the paint slightly more opaque too
@michelineperreault

@@StudioWildlife Thank you very much for this advice! To achieve beautiful hair, I used a lot of water to thin it. I will try to put less or use with a fluid medium, maybe I will succeed! Do you still use Abstract paint to paint your felines?

I don’t have a specific preference but daler Rowney, sennelier abstract or Arteza are the ones I’ve got at the minute

@@StudioWildlife heavy body acrylics such as liquitex and golden mimic oil colors. Do you consider using them ??

Ive done wildlife realism with both and they both have their pros and cons. I do prefer oils now. But i understand the advantage of quick drying time. I wanna point out a bit of misinformation you mentioned tho. Oil paints themselves are not toxic. They are actually more natural and less toxic than acrylic. With modern mineral spirit like Gamsol and non toxic medium alternatives, the toxicity and risk of oil painting has become almost non existent. The lack of proper information sharing on this subject is actually what kept me from trying oils for so long and im sure it affects others similarly. Its simply exaggerated
@StudioWildlife
@StudioWildlife 2 года назад
I agree it’s the spirits used rather than the paints themselves, personally though even using low odour spirits like gamsol or sansodor I do find I get headaches after painting with oils for extended painting sessions. I find it best to take short breaks every hour and get some fresh air. I do really enjoy oils too and you can achieve realism with both methods just as easily using the right techniques

i admit i am a massive acrylic snob. oils are so inferior for me. Smell, drying time, more toxic, hassle with clean up and to time consuming. acrylics rule.
