In the 60’s, the front engine dragster, also called a slingshot, ruled the dragstrip. What is a slingshot? These were nitro-swilling monsters that put the driver behind the slicks and behind the engine, often with catastrophic results. Big Daddy Don Garlits was a slingshot dragster hero before the legendary Don Garlits crash in 1970 caused him to focus on the development of a rear engine dragster.
Big Daddy Don Garlits’ drag racing career started in the early days, but he didn’t invent the slingshot dragster. That credit is usually given to enterprising hot rod pioneer Mickey Thompson. Mickey Thompson’s dragster put the driver out behind the rear axle for better traction, launching an exciting period of front engine dragster racing that saw incredible speeds and some wild innovations.
