My Grandad was an RAF Flight Engineer circa. 1950+ He served in Aden during the withdrawal and the hercules he served on transported the SAS into the field. I remember him telling me about their pink jeeps and how all the crew laughed at the SAS at it looked ridiculous, he then said that once the doors opened and the jeeps drove out into the desert, within 30ft they were 'invisible' and the laughter just as suddenly stopped.

So basically the pink paint scheme was said to be a highly effective desert camouflage, especially at dawn/dusk. They were eventually replaced by the Land Rover 110 series and its more subdued beige camouflage scheme.
@thedude4795
@thedude4795 2 года назад
no, the pink color was meant to blend in DURING THE DAY. It started when an officer, iirc, and others where collecting rubble from a crash site, and one piece was pink, and the officer was amazed at how close he had to be to it before he spotted it. That man was of high stock and because of his suggestion the rovers became pink, and everyone thinks it was only meant for dusk or dawn.
@markdowns9607
@markdowns9607 2 года назад
Customer specifies at the end of the day. However as it is a Military Vehicle you could just by some matt emulsion and do the job yourself... So to speak.
@theant9821
@theant9821 Год назад
@@thedude4795 the idea is while the sun is low in the sky the sand blown by the wind appears to be pink, this happens mid day but its far more significant the lower the sun is. Pink blends in with the sunlight itself and blends in with haze created by the sand. So in mornings and evenings it was especially well camouflaged. During the day in desert stealth warfare you generally try to stay still in hide the vehicle with netting etc. So aircraft can't see it, and move at night. So the pink is ideal for it to stay camouflaged as the sun rises and sets. You want to reduce the silhouette as much as possible. Hence why soldiers don't tab along the ridgeline, they tab below it so your silhouette cannot be seen, you blends in with the hill opposed to standing out in the sky.

Fun fact: Luke Skywalker's lightsaber turned green in Return of The Jedi for the exact opposite reason: because a green lightsaber stands out and create a contrast with the desert background visually, and thus looked better than blue lightsaber. The fact that the blue lightsaber's colour matched the sky also made it necessary to change the colour. This was later retconned of course, and a story meaning was added (Luke has matured and is now worthy of the Jedi Master's status)

Some of the facts aren't quite 100% accurate. They changed/left out some small details here and there. For instance, the pink color scheme, called "Mountbatten pink" was first used on naval ships. It's named after Lord Mountbatten of the Brittish Royal Navy, who was the first to use the color as camouflage during WWII after watching a cargo ship of a similar color, completely disappear in the sunset. It's effectiveness has been argued about for decades so I assume the difference compared to other forms of naval camouflage of the era, like "razzle dazzle" camo, is negligible.

Awesome vehicle. Landrovers are rugged vehicles a British take on of American jeeps for civillian use primarily. Landrovers proved it's capabilities as it was used numerous times in diferent British overland expeditions. One famouse expedition was during the 1950's when 2 landrovers crossed to France and started their expedition and ending it in Singapore this two land rovers as well as their crews came from Oxford and Cambridge University (basically they were colleges) that is why the expedition was called Oxford and Cambridge Overland expedition.

An American Liberator bomber “The Lady be Good” crashed in the Libyan Desert after returning from a raid in WW2. In the 1960 the SAS did their desert mobility training there. This bomber like the Chevrolet trucks of the LRDG were factory painted a dull pink. The wreck site was used by the SAS as a navigational beacon in an area devoid of natural landmarks. This is the origin of the SAS’s use of the colour, although they used a much deeper shade.

1:10 NO NO NO it was not 9 SAS guys vs 400 attackers. It was 9 SAS guys + 30 omani soldiers and 30 locals in an actual fort defending against just about 300 attackers. So while it still was somewhat impressive it was 70 guys (including the arguably best trained soldiers of the world) vs 300 poor barely trained soldiers.

I knew a Brit expat who was a vet of the North Africa campaigns, he said the RAF boys called that particular paint scheme 'delicate pink' and often joked when flying with a P40 or Spit and the guns jammed, all they had to do was turn the plane to reveal it's full pink glory and make the German pilots laugh so hard that'd buy the Spit pilot time to clear his guns and shoot down the enemy.

Great to finally see a video on my favorite obscure history fact! And especially as it’s by Simple History! Although the part about the same, if not similar pink was used on Jeeps in North Africa in 1941-1942. Though this fact may be debatable, it still should have been included, as the North Africa campaign is mentioned, but not the pink jeeps…? Land Rover was basically the British version of the Willys Jeep, and basically played the same role as Jeeps. I still feel as if Pink Jeeps should have been mentioned. Just a thought though…

I guess that pink returns the right kind of wavelength to fade the object in the ambient light during the desert days, kinda like the light grey paint of modern fighters that helps them blend perfectly with the grey blue sky of the day in their background, making them defacto invisible...

This occurred in my unit on depoloyment to Bahrain and then Saudi Arabia for Desert Shield and Desert Storm. NMCB74 (my battalion) received its gear from the previous forward-deployed battalion which had mounted out from Camp Shields, Okinawa, Japan near the end of its deployment cycle. On mountout they'd been directed to repaint all battalion vehicles (once green) to "Desert Brown". On deployment in theater, the vehicles looked decidedly, were, pink. Nothing could be done. Close enough for government work. US Navy Seabees. We Build, We Fight. (in pink CUTV's). Oh, I should mention that the effect only lasted while the paint was new. A few weeks in the sand and they took on the local patina.

I think the SAS is so effective because they literally are just firing machine guns in all directions as they drive around or walk down the street.

Pink is a combination of violet and red light spectrum, that's why you don't see pink on the rainbow ring. Pink is basically a white light that missing green. So that mean pink paint will not reflect green light. Under low ambient light situation, pink is very good to blend into the yellow color surrounding environment and thus it is suitable for desert operation in the night or dawn. If you place a pink card on the sand yellow floor under low light, it basically disappear....

The Mauritanian Gendarmerie have two LRDG Chevy V8's which continue to patrol. They of course retain their original colour. The patrol and I have met up on numerous times over a ten year period. Mostly the patrol were jealous that I had camels and thy did not. I was not jealous that they had two priceless pieces of British WWII history...just proud that they continue to serve.
