Why Were the 90s So Mean to Andie MacDowell? (Groundhog Day, Multiplicity, Michael)

I once was a “featured extra” in a movie with Andie MacDowell - Super nice lady. Got paid $200 bucks cash and basically just sat around all day hanging out until that scene was shot at the end of the day. Super random but it was awesome

The suggestion that Phil in Groundhog Day definitely raped someone despite this not being established in the film because you (or the writer of this) think that that's what anyone with magic powers would do makes me highly suspicious of you (or the writer of this).

You really should include OPCD in the title somewhere. I've been ignoring this video for 3 weeks because I don't know who Andy McDowell is and didn't really care but I like OPCD's format more than most of your videos.

I like how you find these patterns and aren’t afraid to pick it apart. I had fam who dabbled in it and some still in it.. most have a sour comment about it all and I think it’s just how shameless and trashy Hollywood can be. I have really grown up and stopped idolizing just anything our society and culture puts in front of us. I’m glad so much controversy came out and bottom line - this is just typecasting at a distance but if I was in a film class asking to write about it - it’s another bs thing in media taught to women over and over about our place in life. Like if you are the opposite of andie, you’re practically evil and if you’re like her - you’re capable of shit and very easy to con. I watched her a lot in sex, lies and videotape bc it was one of those time where she did kinda confront the situation.. go through some kinda grieving and all of it. Either way, it’s about how men run the industry and how they see women. That’s why a lot of older women are depicted as demons and super young women are creeped on. It’s very oversimplified but IMO it’s all just super obvious? I’d hate to say it’s a rule of thumb but it does seem that way :/ I’m not even sure if another female writer or director wouldn’t use the same stereotypes and sexist bs we all grew up on. And ofc there are the gullible idiot men like the multiple movies where a package needs to be delivered or jake gyllenhal fitting that. It’s all been done one or way another.. Andie got that for sure. Some women will always fit that rom com type and it’s hard to break out of typecasts in general. I’ve had long twisted discussions on just how we could ever put the same action guys in deep, romantic films cause they’re not some relatable Paul Rudd. I love Michael Keaton and yes multiplicity is seriously amazing and I regularly quote it lol

But what about Hudson Hawk!? She's confident and sly in that movie, and does far more duping than getting duped upon.

One more thing: one of the things I really like that the musical improves over the movie is that it does not romanticize Phil's initial pursuit of Rita at all or pretend that he's genuinely in love with her at that point and shows it to be as gross and creepy as it really is and our sympathies lie fully with Rita. And when he does start to really care about her and appreciate the way she sees the world, he pretty much leaves her alone from that point on and doesn't push for anything. By the end, he's only interested in making her and other people happy and not for any personal gain. And when they do get together, Rita is entirely the one to initiate it. And Phil isn't making grandiose declarations of love or ice sculptures of her face, he's just enjoying this moment with her without trying to control it.

Lemon is good by itself but some salt or sugar or maybe some chile. Just bite out the meat of a wedge. Good stuff.

It's pretty obvious that Andie MacDowell is so amazing and everyone wants her that it's worth going all out with the magic, weird temporal abuse, and scams to get with her.

When I first this video's title, I thought finally! Someone's going to make a video about how annoying it was that every half-assed critic in the 90s thought Andie MacDowell couldn't act and would tell anyone who would listen at every opportunity. I spent a good chunk of that decade being frustrated by the inability of seemingly the entire world to realise how freaking adorable and adequately talented she was. This video was only slightly disappointing.

Absolutely do a Groundhog Day episode! On that note, I want to add that Phil Connors most definitely didn't rape anyone. That Rita is a barrier he can't cross and that can't be manipulated is the motivation for him to actually become a better person. If you think too much about it, that's not great either, but it's a lot better than rape.

So... does Dan think Rosebud was an unresolved indicator that Kane was just a wacky alien? Two characters who are destined to be in love after hard times, have a lemon and come up with screwy ways of eating it. They are then corrected by a match maker pointing out the answer is in front of them the whole time, and when life hands you lemons... make an incredibly on the nose point with them.

The editing/video insets in this were perfect. Whoever did that DID WORK. LOTS OF IT. Great job.

If you ask me, this place is a little too "dogs without horses," with Jack gone.
