➡️ When I finally realized that Ned's Atomic Dustbin wasn't some video game soundtrack, reading about their two-bassist lineup really intrigued me to check them out! I was expecting something sort of "heady" along the lines of virtuosic jazz or technical metal - but as it turns out - "Grey Cell Green" is a catchy rock anthem! I was quite surprised at how naturally they implemented two bass parts underneath (or on top of) a guitarist, which provides such a punchy, dense sound. I discuss their "grunge-y" production and tones, how their instrumentation provides each member with a ton of melodic liberty throughout the song, a music-theory analysis of the chord progressions and melodies, and much more! ☢️ 🎸🎸

When I saw Ned's in '92, the melody bassist was only playing Rickenbachers and the rhythm bassist was only playing Stingrays. They also had amazing merch. That being said, to me, their sound came out of the Stone Roses and Pop Will Eat Itself in the late 80's. Those two bands seemed to give birth to Ned's, EMF, the Happy Mondays, and Blur right there at the start of the 90's. If you would like to check out a completey different side of Ned's, give a listen to "Premonition" which is my favorite song from them.
@greggerypeccary

Yeah, the production/sound of this is very much early 90s UK indie rock. But were the Stone Roses actually originators? Hmm...
@hairychris444

PWEI, Neds and The Wonder Stuff all came out of Stourbridge near Birmingham at the same time. Different scene completely to The Stone Roses.

I’m eating to call it fraggle but I could be wrong. Indie noise pop. You’d got Shoegaze in Oxford and Madchester in Manchester. Grunge hadn’t happened over here yet and it kinda killed the noise pop groovers when it arrived.
@Si_G

Grebo, that’s it.
@greggerypeccary

@@Si_G I just lump those bands under "UK indie rock", together with everything from the Weddos to CUD to whichever other bands I can't remember now (because it was a lifetime ago). Musically I think Ned's actually do fit under grunge, just not the commercial hard-rock rehash "grunge" (Pearl Jam, Alice in Chains and their ilk) -- more like the smaller bands you'd hear on the Sub Pop 200 comp.

If you ever return to Ned's, check out something from their second album Are You Normal? like "Intact" or "Legoland". That's where they really figure out how to use the double bass + guitar setup with interlocking melodies, plus Dan's drumming takes another leap forward.
@GillRockatansky
@GillRockatansky Месяц назад
I'd second that, but I'd suggest either going with either the better known Intact or the highly overlooked Titch., cos they both have much more prominent bass from Alex. The versions from the sessions album are probably the best cos Ned's always shine best live. I really hope there's a follow up, video on Ned's, cos they don't get the credit they deserve. Also worth noting that Alex and Rat sometimes use a capo.

ArnoCorps has two bass players. One bass player plays a Tenor tuned bass with a high C string. Their high bass is pretty prominent and used as a lead and harmony. I haven’t come across another two bass band that does it like ArnoCorps. They refer to their two bass two guitar configuration as Heroic Symmetry!

Ned's, Mega City Four, Pop Will Eat Itself formed this weird little British musical subculture called "grebo", which kind of sounds like punk-pop bands like All, and pre-NIN electronic industrial bands like Nitzer Ebb and ravier bands like Happy Mondays or EMF. Music was so good in the late 80s/early 90s before grunge took over.

It's almost as if one bass follows the drums, and the other is a lead right along with the guitar and vocals. Doing it that way opens up a ton of options if you can pull it off successfully. I'm going to have to check out more of their stuff because up until now I've never heard of them before. They sound pretty close to a good chunk of the other stuff I would have been listening to back then for sure.

It's funny you mention video games in regards to this band. My introduction to them was the soundtrack for the NCAA 06 football game. Unlike all of the other games in the series before and after, someone at EA made the decision to include a licensed soundtrack with this edition. Unlike their other sports games, which typically pull from pop and hip hop for their soundtracks, they decided to put the music selection in the hands of someone who wanted to capture the vibe of a college rock station from the early 90s. Ned's Atomic Dustbin (though they selected the track "Kill Your Television"), Guided By Voices, Lagwagon, Jawbreaker, NOFX, Pixies, and so on. Honestly, I've always wanted to meet the person in charge of the track selection, because they did quite a bit for my musical tastes.

The Ned's were a great band and part of my youth, discovered them when I was 18 and saw them several times from the grimy Bristol Bierkeller right up to 2nd headliners at the Reading Festival. They did also appear on Top of the Pops in the UK playing Happy (with one of them rocking a Husker Du t-shirt), so they did achieve some success for a brief period (pre-Britpop). God Fodder is a rawer sound than the next album. Kill Your Television, Selfish, Happy, Cut Up, Throwing Things, hell the whole album is great for showing off the dual bass sound. Unique band from a great era of music. I would thoroughly recommend listening to the whole album!!

You should check out Pinback's Fortress. In most of Pinback's songs Rob Crow plays guitar, but for Fortress, and I think a few other songs, he plays bass while Zach Smith still plays bass in his lead sort of way, resulting in 2 basses, 0 guitars, 2 singers, and drums!

I got a strange suggestion/request for when you hit 100k subscribers. Sex Pistols - any song live with Sid Vicious on bass. He is considered the worst bass player ever. On the Pistols only album the original bass player or the guitarist recorded the bass. He was credited on the album. He is in the Rock n Roll hall of fame as a bassist. Live they would usually unplug him and then do one of the following: - have a different person playing the bass while hiding behind the amp - crank the bass setting and lower the other settings on the guitar amp - just have no bass at all If you say yes I will find a link where he is playing and send it (it's not easy) They predicting the Siouxious and the Banshees will be inducted to RnR HoF 2025 and he drummed for them before Sex Pistols (poorly) so he could be inducted twice. It'll be fun - especially if you try to play with him ( I bet it'll be harder than you think - cause it'll kill every instinct you have to suck that badly ).

Hey Mark, for another 90s dual bass band check out Cop Shoot Cop. They didn't find much success out of the NYC scene but have a bit of a cult following. While some guitar was featured towards the end of their run, most songs didn't feature any so they were much more bass forward. Room 429 would probably be their most well known track (which does feature some guitar but it's still real bass heavy).

Loved them since their heyday. This particular video got a decent amount of MTV play. It's a shame that more bands don't use twin-bass lineups.

The late 80s and early 90s college radio bands had a certain vibe to the vocals. Soup Dragons, Better Than Ezra, Mazzy Star, etc. To me these bands show the lineage from 80s bands like The Cure and New Order to Nirvana and Stone Temple Pilots.

Wow, The Soup Dragons, thats a band I'd completely forgotten about for nearly two decades. Agree with the college rock vibes though, to me this compares more closely to the Pixies/ Screaming Trees etc than the big 4.
