I agree. When someone buy a new windows computer it comes with a lot of unecessary software. Most of this software run in background consuming machine resources. The system is ugly. Many things pop up to screen, except what you really need. System update process is extremely low, time consuming and requires reboot almost all time. It's a big mistake to think that Linux is for advanced users only.

Back in 2020, when the pandemic closed my country, I switched my secondary laptop to Ubuntu 20.04. Then pop!_os (System76 laptops still not available in Pakistan). And since then, I have loved it (How fast my ten-year-old laptop is doing) :) + I am currently your WordPress Premium Theme Development student and plan to follow all your videos related to WordPress Development. Man, you have one of the finest video playlists associated with WordPress development. Love from Pakistan.

My last Windows was MS Windows XP. Once most of my games ran fine in wine, I moved to Linux 100% and never looked back. Now I buy games that run natively in Linux and the install process is eons ahead compared to Windows (no fiddling with DLL conflict hells, no fiddling with registry conflicts, etc. etc.)

I upgraded from Windows 7 to windows 10 to support my new Nikon camera software and after a few months it started slowing down (I have 64gb of ram) and now it started bugging like crazy : it boots slowly up and then doesn’t allow me to access my programs anymore, all I can do is try to save my files on a hard drive and suddenly it turns into a black screen with only showing up the restart button and internet connected button dow the menu. It’s terribly frustrating, I lost so much time making my own PCS from the age of 20 to 44. It first was fun and now I keep having bugs on windows, I will switch to MAC now

ok, I agree that Windows isn't the best OS ever, but I find the points criticised a bit weak here. saying the colours are too much and the buttons and toolbars are too big without giving any concrete criticism makes me wonder what exactly you mean. The colour for the icons in your explorer sidebar for example let you quickly discern what folder it is and therefore get faster to your desired destination. Same for the new settings. Next you say that it doesn't change. I think Windows 11 changed a lot of things compared to XP or even Windows 7, but there are also learnt patterns that are arguably bad UI (e.g. hamburger button on Android) but that users have gotten so familiar with you can't just throw them out from one OS iteration to the next. Not to mention that when using other operating systems like MacOS the explorer (or finder I guess) doesn't function that different at least from my experience. At least back then when I got my MacBook I felt right at home. You say Windows constantly sends you annoying notifications, but personally I cannot relate and I haven't really done anything about it. Yes it does give you a few after updates or on a fresh install as part of its user on-boarding but I wouldn't call that necessarily bad. What is bad is that they try to advertise their own apps, though that isn't a Windows exclusive. Hell I would say Apple can be even more restrictive in that regard. That is a dark pattern for all companies that are trying to sell you something. Even Mozilla are trying to sell me Mozilla VPN with every firefox update (even though I ALREADY HAVE IT). The only exception may be Linux here. Even then, I have Firefox as my standard browser and I maybe get an edge advert every half a year ... which, while still 2 times per year too much, isn't as bad as you make it sound imo. Saying it would be slower is also very subjective. Back on intel days windows was often quite a lot faster than e.g. MacOS in some scenarios. Heck the iMac even thermal throttles and it is a desktop PC lol. The new ARM chips are a different story but that is just beast hardware. In general I mostly just notice the difference between what framerate the screen has when I switch between MacOS and Windows. I feel like Windows has some low hanging fruit you could have criticised instead, like: - inconsistent UI (settings app vs. control panel vs. windows 10 design in the mail app) - no tabs in file explorer even though it has been requested for ages - apps don't open on the screen where you clicked the icon (though MacOS does that as well ... don't know about Linux) - Clicking something that opens in browser while using virtual desktops switches you to the virtual desktop where you already have a browser open, making them essentially useless (though MacOS at least does that as well) - The taskbar being super buggy when set to auto-hide - etc. All in all I think Windows is far from perfect but as always: the grass isn't much greener on the other side (at least from my experience having used MacOS extensively and a bit of Linux here and there). The biggest issue of Windows currently is that the UI is in a constant "half modernised" state, lacking consistency more so than MacOS at least, Linux probably depends on what distro and / or GUI you use. But Windows has it's advantages as well: - Amazing backwards compatibility. Some ages old programs just run on the newest version of Windows - Good Window management out of the box (at least compared to MacOS lol) - A plethora of applications available - etc.

The biggest mistake people make is they want Linux to be like Windows, and when it isn't like Windows they say it's hard to use. Mainstream Linux distributions are not hard to use at all, but they are not like Windows, BY DESIGN they are not like Windows and this is a very GOOD THING. By their logic they want to leave Windows because it is terrible but then want what they move to be like the thing they are leaving. It makes no sense and it never will.

I think you got many things right, but some characterizations are misleading in that I think the competition isn't any better. So sure Windows isn't exactly minimal. But the minimal interface is the Taskbar and you can hide it if you want. On Mac OS you have a permanent menu bar and dock. Gnome is a little better with only a top bar. Though that one is mostly useless. Yes, Windows itself isn't super snappy. Updates take forever. Windows own apps are often quite laggy. But then again. My most common app the Browser isn't faster anywhere else and neither are the myriad of browser based apps I use, e.g. Discord, VSCode and Spotify. I run Windows on a midrange 6 year old desktop processor and a 5 year old laptop whose CPU has a TDP of 15W and it runs fine. The annoyances of Microsoft nagging you to try, buy and use stuff is real. But as someone living with todays advertisement driven internet economy, this feels harmless. I also want to point out that the upside to Windows' cluttered and disjointed UI is, that there is a UI for most things you want to do. On Linux you have to drop down to the command line very quickly and on Mac OS things are often just not possible. The counter to that is Microsoft's UI isn't just badly designed, it's broken. There isn't a single animation in Windows that isn't super glitchy.
@GuillermoPaulman

The #1 reason it's terrible (for me) is the user-unfriendly design of it. If you're looking for something, it's not where you expect it to be, and you have to click an unnecessary number of times to get there.

I'm a Windows user (Win 8.1). I live in Sweden and almost every job is in .NET and the Azure world. Everyone works in Windows job wise. Next problem is that I use my computer for music and I have compared a lot. Last year I compared and a Mac computer that don't even gives me the same (power and program choice) as in a Windows computer and the Mac is extremely much more expensive. I can't afford that. And Linux for serious music use is not to think about. I did have a job as an embedded programmer. C++ and Linux Mint was the setup. I liked that. However everything you say about Windows and it's development is true. That's the sad part of it. They have the knowledge to create the best OP and they mess it up som much. For about 10 years ago there was a guy who did a pirate version of Windows 7 that was really good. He removed all the crap (not just the normal tweaking) and it was like swimming with the current and not against it (the normal Win use).

I agree on a few points, mostly on UI inconsistency, but I pretty much disagree on everything else. Most issues you mentioned seem to come from a place of MacOS habit. No OS is perfect, but windows is not a bad OS. I didn't try win 11, it seems to be a little pushy with ist own stuff but that is what always happens with a new version of the OS, as time goes on it will be tuned down like it happened with Win10. The thing I most disagree with is the speed argument. I'm a lead UX designer and I work with people who think they have to use macs, so I need to use a Mac every now and then, and it feels so much slower compared to when I use Win10, and it feels so even when my Mac proficient colleagues use it in front of me. On win10 I don't have to fight with messy windows management, useless animations, intentional breaking of ux basic rules (cuz... think different). One last thing is that it's kinda pointless to say that windows is bad out of the box since the fact that it's more customizable and gives me a lot of control is the main reason I use it. I do so many things I couldn't on Mac OS, and I think that should be taken in consideration before claiming what's on the click baity thumbnail of this vid (btw it worked like a charm) 😂

If you like speed, usability and reliability you should really try linux, it will run blazing fast on old hardware, will never freeze you from whatever you're doing to update. I’ve tried to internalize why I dislike PC gaming and I think you’ve described my thoughts on why I can’t stand gaming on a PC. The operating system (Windows) tries to put itself between your apps and you. And the Windows also doesn’t enforce any kind of runtime restrictions on apps beyond memory protection. A developer is free to install all kinds of background processes that do whatever and are invisible to the user. There’s no enforcement whatsoever. Contrast this to iOS or a game console where game developers cannot just install background tasks. Consoles enforce formalities that benefit the end user by keeping processes honest. iPhones do too. I want both worlds. Stay out of my way, allow me to do anything I want, but don’t allow others free access to my machine when I install their app. This is why Windows is a terrible operating system. It lets companies do whatever they want with my hardware.

Be more specific and show visually more details to support your arguments. Mac OS has its own GUI logic that was designed based on. very objective reasons while Windows seems to not have (Mac ‘s choice bar at the top on every app is because of the infinite factor of throwing the cursor to the limits of the screen being easier to chose something instead of having all dimensions and the targeting of a choice be harder since you have to aim the cursor on a specific point like in windows, without having a line to aim before you point to the target choice). I am not a fan of windows by any means but your description seemed too hyperbolic... and if we compare windows with mac os by your standards then mac os is even worse except for decent ui. Linux is fine but it still doesnt have a lot of crucial applications(or has terrible alternatives) that windows has to live comfortabily.

Which points are you referring to? I talked about a lot of things. I personally never experienced in any other OS the level of bloatware of default apps, intrusive notifications, confusing multi-layers system settings, and slow background process I experienced in Windows.

Windows 10, Windows 11 ... are bloated, slow, buggy, disk grinding crap. In year 2024, a tech person might think that Microsoft ... the giant ... would have corrected the nasty problems that are built deep into its massive, bloated software. The worst problem persists: it's never ending startup delays. Windows spends anywhere from five to fifteen minutes GRINDING on the OS disk, performing seemingly irrelevant and never ending "update checks" and "anti-malware" checks and "anti-virus" checks etc etc. Really? Worse, it is materially IMPOSSIBLE to move user data and/or programs to an "alternate" disk unit so as to isolate the Windows "turd counting" from the need for the user to have fast, efficient I/O to their data and programs. Come on, Microsoft! No matter how much MEMORY or DISK or I/O performance you are given, you drag the computer to its slowest possible performance. The ONLY reason I use Windows at home is because my employer used Windows and I didn't want to have two separate machines. I now seriously regret that decision, and wish I'd gone with Apple years ago.

I got off the Windows train at Vista. Disliked Macs initially because I was a life long Windows user, but then one day I was doing something on a Mac and realized how much easier it was if I had to do the same thing on a PC, and that's when it started to click for me. The Windows UI is sooo inconsistent, at times dense, and the latest had ads that you have to turn off. Windows is better some some things (gaming, some VFX areas etc), but I wouldn't use Windows as a daily OS if given a choice, which is why I no longer do.

I think your videos are usually great but I think this one is somewhat overstated. Quite frankly when I am developing code I don't feel there is much in it. It's the application that matter that makes one productive, not the desktop. The intrusive elements really happen rarely. I used both. Linux since 1993. Never had too much problem with windows. No blue screen since windows XP on my systems :) I actually think on my machines which are pretty beefy, windows GUI elements feel more responsive than anything in X , one needs at least Wayland to get similar smoothness in GNOME or Elementary, though Qt is faster than anything GTK based in feeling to me, this is not too surprising, since windows controls GUI elements in kernel space, unlike the rather slow high latency client server model of X in user space, background processes aside. GTK is not a well optimized software/toolkit on which many desktops are based. I've written several benchmarks what happens when you throw heavy duty at it, it doesn't cope well at all, though Qt sails through them, so there is at least one good performer that can do heavy duty stuff.

Thanks for the comment. Your overview is very valid, but I think you misunderstood a little bit the point of my video. I never compared Windows with Linux or macOS, I didn't even mention them once in the video. I also specifically avoided talking about anything code related, or GUI toolkits, or display servers. The core topic of the video is a list of personal opinions based on UX analysis of an average user using a laptop with Windows preinstalled. You obviously have great knowledge on the matter and you know your way around prefs and optimizations, as well as having a beefy hardware at your disposal, but that's your experience based on your personal knowledge and opinion. Here, I was simply listing the average experience of a non tech guy. Cheers,

Mwale: Macs are almost universally considered more user friendly than Windows (goole it). Maybe you feel this way because Windows use is ingrained in your brain so it is difficult of you to learn another OS. But no, generally Macs are not worse or less user friendly than Windows. The opposite.

@Noi5ee

When pro peripherals don't work properly under Linux, it is not because Linux is terrible, but because the manufacturer does not bother to support Linux properly like they do windows. Linux itself is perfectly capable to be used in a professional setting with pro peripherals and many use Linux like that.
