In this video , Why women doctors face sexism in medicine , I review an article on the topic of sexism in medicine and how as women, in multiple specialties experience sexism, sometimes conscious but most of the time unconsciously in their day to day life. Sexism in life is a problem, but in medicine it could be particularly bad as women's views and opinions are sometimes ignored. I barely touch the surface here but will go over this topic and others of the type in subsequent videos. This is a video for all those who are interested in Anesthesiology and Anesthesiologists as well as those interested in pursuing a career in Medicine. The outstanding article I discussed, “ A very well-kept secret: Women doctors detail widespread sexism in medicine” by Adriana Belmonte can be read here:

Also, the American College of Physicians’ comprehensive list “Top 10 things you can do to impact gender equity in medicine” can be found here:

Lastly, my (really early in RU-vid world 😬)
reaction video to this realer than real episode of Blackish can be watched here:

Sounds a lot like the military. Unfortunately women get discriminated against all the time especially when we get pregnant and have children. There are so many males that don’t lift a finger but are glorified because they’re fit or are part of the good-ol-boys club. It’s so discouraging and draining to be in male dominated job as a Latina and single mother of 3. But I’m getting through it. That all being said, I’m 3.5 years from retirement and I will be applying to medical school. That has always been my passion/goal since before my life in the military, 20 years ago. Thank you for all you do!

As a black (AA) doctor, it would also be interesting to hear your perspective on racism- have you faced this or know of other blck doctors or nurses who may face this. There is a recent news story on a blck surgeon who had a non blck patient, a lady. She didn’t want him operating on her because he was blck. Respectfully, thanks

Amazing content! And I’m sorry that you have to deal with such animosity, issues such as these have persisted for far too long and deserves to be highlighted. As a former Navy Corpsman, Laser/Cryo Therapist, Medical Device Territory Sales Manager and now vying MD Candidate, I’ve witnessed such staunch bias and gender inequality that I was absolutely compelled to stomp out in my presence. Such aggressions need to halted before it truly negates future female physicians from entering the ranks.

@@assassinruler1483 Most true, many medical schools today are predominantly female, however, female physicians are still walled off from specialities that are male dominant. Plus, the students/candidates that do match into higher prestiged specialties are still met with chauvinism, sexism, ethnocentrism, homophily, microaggressions and straight up egocentrism that is curtsied from some male physicians thinking that a woman cannot be as profound or prolific within their corridor of medicine. Hence, pushing some women from becoming physicians all together because of the horrors they’ve experienced as NPs, PAs, RNs, Tech’s, Therapists, Assistants and or through the grapevine from those who I’ve fore-mentioned. Overall, instead of 49% to 51% female, those percentages could easily become 52%+.

@@assassinruler1483 Some do sue while others feel they need to take the bull in order to keep doing what they love - medicine. I’ve personally gone to great extremes to report behaviors that are unbecoming to medical boards and Healthcare Organization Networks; especially when it dampens a surgical teams ability to operate at maximal capacity, however, there needs to be more than just a few men who report these issues. Until more men see this as an issue, I alone cannot upend such a massive agenda alone. The numbers are still lopsided by the average through The Law of Numbers via due to women’s numbers just spiking over the last decades compared to the centuries of the profession being male, plus, again the metrics are 49% to 52% on average at any given medical school. Not 65% and 35%. And last remark, I simply cannot speak for the greater of women in medicine who endure such issues, especially since I’m not Omnipotent, Omnipresent or a National Ambassador for women who may, or may not, want my input. Thanks, Desmon

@@assassinruler1483 no one is saying sexism will prevent females from getting into the medical field. Idk why you keep bringing that up. That's not the problem. Females being harassed is the problem.

This is something I was more unaware of as a man entering the medical profession. But after experiences with female colleagues over my medical and research training, I've become more aware of sexism with regards to what we say and respond to as men. In most cases, I've found that it's truly ignorance that fuels a lot of these issues. Whether we like to admit it or not, being a man does come with privileges that women don't necessarily have. The more we are able to be aware of these issues the more we can be supportive and be cognoscente of what we say or believe.

You know there is official more female doctors than male doctors. It is going to be more female doctors once the older generation of men to women retires. Doctors also make way more than the vast majority of STEM which is great. I wish women should celebrate this more. This is a huge achievement. Also Pharmacists are also majority women too which makes more than most engineers. I wish they celebrate this more.

I completely disagree. Men don't disrespect women coz we work less. It is simply because they generally think they are better than women. It's an Inherent, subconscious and sometimes conscious male culture. They just think your a woman and nothing but a submissive pon. If your great at your job it should not matter if you work less hours. That's even none of their business.

I see your point, and misogynistic views play a key role in the disrespect of women; in medicine (and most professional spaces), and even the world.. it’s all about money. Money is power. The statement about women working less is my summarization of this: Men can earn more generally bc they work more, don’t take maternity leave, etc (and traditional gender roles, child rearing-which may influence how much one works).. having more earning potential, that’s empowering.. And can drive this unrealistic dogma..I simplified it, but you’re right, and its more complicated, and goes beyond the scope of my channel..thanks for your comment and for watching!

The people that work more hours are generally better and more experienced in their jobs. I'm not saying the person who works less should be less respected, but they shouldnt consider themselves equal to a person putting in more hours.

More than other senior doctors, I have noticed it can be nurses and allied health care professionals often female who treat female doctors as lesser than male colleagues. Simple things from doing things like cannulas etc, that they do for the boys but not the girls. Things that they let pass for boys but not girls. Requesting more busy jobs to be completed by girls than boys, administrative stuff that they won't chase the boys for in the same way. Far from universal but it is something I have observed.

5:09 neurosurgery isn't a good example. Maybe in 20 years it might be if those stats are still the same. In present day, a lot of practicing neurosurgeons are male because medical schools had more male enrollment in the past. Thats not the case now as there is a lot more female enrollment.

Perhaps...things will be completely different down the road as things even out..But unfortunately, this is what’s being faced Today. Right now. Amongst women physicians. Looking forward to better times.

and why shouldn't they want status and money if they're devoting their life to helping people and worked so hard studying for over 20 years?
