Here are ALL the mistakes students make when learning the piano that causes them to fail! We know that playing the piano can seem like an impossible feat, but have you ever stopped to consider why you might not be making progress? In this video, we introduce you to Stacey, a woman who is making all the common mistakes that sabotage success when learning how to play the piano. Stacey only watches videos online and never practices, she takes traditional piano lessons and starts with sheet music, she never learns chords, and she makes excuses and claims she is too old, unmotivated, and more. Are you guilty of making these same mistakes?
If you're serious about learning how to play the piano, it's important to understand the pitfalls that can keep you from achieving your goals. By watching this video, you'll gain a better understanding of what not to do when learning how to play the piano.
So if you're ready to take your piano playing to the next level, watch this video and learn why you'll never be able to play piano if you keep making these mistakes.
And be sure to meet me in the comments and let me know which mistakes you are making, just like Stacey!

I've been playing guitar in church for many years. Occasionally we got someone new to play piano/keyboards who was classically trained, maybe to fill in when the regular was absent. Some didn't know chords at all. We would have to tell them the notes of the chords. Occasionally we could get the score but mostly we operated with a small budget and used chord charts. Now with iPads, it really helps to have the whole song on one page, two at the most.

I'm afraid to admit I'm just like Stacey in so many ways! I am definitely more apt to watch someone talk about how to play something rather than put in the work to actually learn to play it myself (though I rarely eat popcorn!). This video called me out on a lot of my bad habits.

Interesting I believe there are better ways to learn everything I have been playing since the winter solstice I wake up super early 4 in the morning sometimes 5. I play with headphones so I don't disturb anyone. I made it through that beginning boot camp time period with my early morning routine I started with a meathod book and am open to expanding and exploring some of your ideas thanks for sharing this information Steve

This is a lot like teaching oneself a foreign language (which I've done several times). The way I would deal with missing practice sessions is: if you really don't feel like working on it one day, you don't have to, but you can't let 2 consecutive days go by without it. A 48-hour deadline, so to speak.

Stacy you have cracked it chords gives easy access to a lot of enjoyment obviously for serious playing you need years of training but when you get to my age 82 that is not an option I would recommend your method as it works. Good luck peace and love

Hi Kathlyn, where do you suggest I start? I watch your beginner mistakes video and I agree with you that taking private lessons which teach you notes, songs like "MaryAnn" and "When the saints go marching in" is lame & boring. Just felt like giving up as I was getting nowhere. I'm not even halfway through the book they start you with. It would be OK if I was 10 years old, but I am indeed a late comer. I like the 3 suggestions to start with, chord sheets, lead sheets, and scales.. Looking forward to your course. Sal C.

I think that learning chords first is 100% the right way to go. That's how guitar player do it. They're up and running, playing songs in weeks if not days. Everything else can be developed later. You won't quit out of early boredom and frustration. The bonus of this is, if you're paying attention, is that it's teaching you theory, even if you don't know what any of it is technically yet. ADVICE FOR LEARNING ANY MUSICAL INSTRUMENT: Go as far as you can as fast as you can, before the enthusiasm fades.

@@pianoly Yeah, sure. Anytime. Now, a day later I would like to answer your question from the video and thus add to the list of things two thoughts that might or may not hinder someone from learning to and playing the piano. First: False assumptions why someone wishes to play the piano. It took me a while to understand that my first excitement about playing the piano was fueled about certain music and melodies I enjoy so much. Understanding that wishing to play these melodies and coming the long way to get there are two very different and distinct animals to tame. This insight allowed me to think twice about whether I want to play the piano really or not. And yes, I want to. But learning the instrument required me to approach it from a different angle - not based on what I wish, but instead on what method seems to be the proper way for me to learn it. And finally, when I made up my mind, I bought the instrument and have started practicing … Aiming to get enough skills to then approach the music I endorse so much. And buying the right instrument would be the second point I would like to make. If you do not get the instrument that fuels your will to learn and play the instrument. If it does not feel good and does not make you wish to play it, then it is the wrong instrument and you most certainly will loose interest in it. So: test it, try it in the music store - how it feels, how it sounds, if it looks right etc. In short: if it makes the right impression on you and sparks the fire to becoming a pianist. Do these two points make sense?

It depends what your goals are. If you want to play pop and improvise then sure play the chords and then figure out how to fit into a bands and you 80% there. There are an amazing amount of incredible musicians that learned by ear and never figured it out or have only a surface level understanding of music theory. If that's the goal then right on. I would add to your comments to learn how to move within the Nashville System for a better understanding of why the chords are in the order they are. That said, I wouldn't be so quick to bash traditional teaching. There is a lot of music that you're not going to have access too without those old fashioned methods. So maybe the Chords thing is good to keep people interested in the beginning but would still start sprinkling in printed music that they can grow into. I heard a comment one time. ^If you can play classical, you can play jazz. If you can play jazz you can play pop. Rules don't work in reverse.^ That could be a BS comment frankly, but also, if you only want to ever play Pop, Blues/Rock then ya, just developing your ear is going to be far better than learning to read. But if you want to play Moonlight Sonata Mvmt III, your not doing that by only learning chords, even on that piece which is largely just a bunch of arpeggiated chords. Thanks for the content. Congrats on reaching 10k subs.
