5 years ago, I got fed up with my boring life of going every day to the office. I've left everything: my apartment, my job, my stuff... I've been traveling for 5 years, living as a minimalist nomad, working remotely, and it's been one of the best decisions I've taken in my life, which I would've probably never taken if my life was slightly better then!

This is a great video and it explains why I struggle to leave my job. And it's so hard to leave when they give me free healthcare, pretty good pay, 27 vacation days a year plus birthday and anniversary off, and 5 additional vacation days that I can purchase. My only complaints are I'm always bored there and I wanted to unlock my fullest potential there, but it's not a place for that. All I got was excuses from my past and current supervisors/bosses every time I tried to have a discussion about my career goals. I wanted to be a machinist but I'm mostly content with what I do there now. And everywhere I look it sounds like any job I take would be a downgrade in some way either in jobs perks and/or pay. And I feel like that would be super foolish. I'm better off staying put and shoveling money into my 401k.

Maybe not "ages", but I've heard/read as well, that the frog story isn't (totally) true. It seems that even frogs are getting wiser over time (or not those very same frogs, but their children, grandchildren or great-grandchildren. A kind of "the evolution of frogs". Maybe there will come a time, when frogs are wiser than people, because the don't have a smartphone and they don't spend hours and hours on social media.

Tim Ferris's "Pain Setting" is similar to Tony Robbins' "Personal Power" program where a similar suggestion of associating deep pain with the current state of affairs is advised to build motivation for change. Startups & companies can also languish for long in a "dead zone" like this. Business doing just good enough to Keep The Lights On, but not bad enough to face survival issues.

This analogy is demonstrated in the Star Wars show Andor, when the Empire is "choking us so slowly we're starting not to notice". As much as people dislike the Empire they don't put up a fight because things could be worse. It's not until the Empire makes things borderline unlivable for people that prisoners break out of labor camps and local citizens fight back against soldiers on the streets

You forgot to mention we become dissatisfied with or a accustomed to the things we have, believing there's something better out there, but we're just delusional at times. The secret is listening to your self, not your mind. If it feels right then go at it, if you are uncertain, just wait, time isn't right yet. Work, relationship, health..: what can you do to fix it if something's wrong? Leaving isn't always the best decision. If you're stuck because of fear: work on it! Why are you feeling that way, where it comes from, does it have any correlation to reality or is it just in your mind? Many people are pros at sabotaging themselves...

This thinking has a number of flaws. Mainly, the hedonic treadmill allows us to adapt to crappy and good situations, which means crappier situations than what currently is and better than what currently is. If something helps propel me to a better place, well maybe I just get complacent at that better place since I’m capable of getting complacent where I’m at. You basically have to reaffirm to yourself on a regular basis the consequences of inaction as discussed in this video but also the benefits of action. Keep in mind the way different improvements impart benefits on other areas, creating positive feedback. The same goes for inaction and accumulating negatives and decay. Also, what is measured gets managed. Take stock of the results you are driving. How well are you actually starting new habits? It’s easy to hide from the discomfort of your failure when you slouch away from the proof. On the flip side it’s easy to ignore the good you’ve accomplished when you’re only focused on the next thing.

I think it depends on the person, person A might reach the breaking point that they realise I cannot take it to see myself so fat that I need to work out. Person b may see all this fat, and just not start because what’s the point. also the moral of the story from the author is the person who is fat is more likely to workout compared to a skinny fat guy because the fat guy would see that work need to be done, otherwise things will continue to be worse

@Kelly_Ben

It's the exact opposite... like he said, the worse things are, finally hitting rock bottom is when you finally snap and make the changes you need. It sounds like you might not have hit that point yet. My finances, health, and love life were in shambles. I worked in a decent paying but super high stress job with crap hours. I snapped, and made a huge change i never would have been willing to make if life wasn't such crap- I rented a room in a house with 5 other people. 1 year later, my finances were better, I bought a condo, started dating again and met a great guy, and was fit and healthy because of worrying less and being able to afford better food/ vitamins etc. When the pain of staying where you are finally becomes worse than the pain of making the changes to fix it, things finally get better. Best wishes to you.

2:42 I find this example questionable. Sure, if his situation was worse he'd probably be incentivised to improve it. But that could just as well mean he'd end up in his current situation without any improvement whatsoever. I see no reason to assume he'd improve his worse situation to something that's better than his current one, only to something that is better than the worse one.
@Art3mis_XO
@Art3mis_XO 2 месяца назад
Agreed.. another example I can think of is about health Suppose you weigh 15 kgs more than what you currently are then you might be even more discouraged to change as it'll be a lot harder. Basically, it depends on the situation as per me.
