My friend had a client with naturally pitch black hair. She told her it would take 2 to 3 sessions to go blonde and explained that her hair would look brassy after the 1st but they'd fix it on the 2nd. The girl panicked after the 1st session and went to another stylist to try and lighten it the next day. The stylist ruiner her hair smd my friend was pissed at her client, she didn't take her back.
@@katievents7412when they say destroyed, they mean beyond repair. hair can practically melt or break off sometimes in response to certain chemicals, so there’s no saving that chunk.
My sister is a stylist. My natural color is a strawberry brownish, with natural highlights. It's absolutely beautiful, just not on me. I decided to go platinum. It took us 3 sessions to lighten and tone me to where I wanted to be. After the first session, my hair was still brown. I utterly hated it. The second time took me to blonde, but I still wasn't the icy silver i wanted. We toned it again, and it came out beautifully. Trust your stylist and trust the process
I have medium brown hair and went to get highlights (I'd had dark brown dye at some point too). My hair lifted to a literal white the first time, my hairdresser was pretty shocked 😂 it was dry as hell but didn't break.
When I have my natural color (dark golden brown), sometimes I'll go get highlights. The last time they started at the crown & I told them "That's going to be white by the time you get midpoint. My hair takes coloring very well." They didn't believe me, but I insisted they check. They did & yes, the highlights were platinum. They had to wash it out & I held a towel to my face while they finished the back.
Yuppp mines like that too, goes straight to a slightly yellow platinum 😂 I've even been able to take permanent colors out of my hair shockingly easy like 70% of the time, idk why my hair is like this but im not gonna look a gift horse in the mouth
I have that ability too and I think it has to do with the quality of product. As in not outdated product. Dyes do expire too like food, so good before the date quality dye will be able to take dark hair and turn white in one go. I do it all of the time using Ferias' bleach kits.
A few years ago I went to a salon that took me from my very dark brown hair to WHITE in one go. I asked if it was safe/possible to go platinum since it was my first time (they said yes), they did not do a strand test, and I had to regrow all my chest-length hair from scratch due to awful breakage. Do your research and don't trust anyone that doesn't give you a proper consultation 💚
Oof yeah. My mum is a hairdresser and says new people always need a strand test and you never do more than one round of bleach or colour remover in a day and never trust anyone that tells you they can take your dark hair to platinum in one go. She's had to try and fix a lot of other peoples mistakes which in a couple of cases has included just cutting off the most damaged parts because they were too brittle to do anything else with. Oh she also says don't go swimming with freshly bleached hair. It will turn green from the chlorine.
@@Ri57490no, it's not. I've seen people that are unaware of allergies have a serious reaction, including anaphylaxis, due to using new chemicals. It can literally save lives because a strand test can cause mild irritation and alert client and stylist not to use the product all over the head.
My best friend is an Aveda stylist and just did a major color correction on my hair. After 10+ years of dark ruby red Féria box dye layered onto my naturally ash blonde mid back length hair, he was able to get me to a gorgeous level 8-9 mushroom blonde with only 10 vol. My hair was so still so brassy towards the ends after lightening, I don’t know what kind of sorcery he did to get it so ashy in the toning process. The man is a magician.
My hairdresser cuts the tiniest amount of hair and dies the test strand off my head bc she doesn't want my balayage to have one hard streak, is that common?
Yes!! I used to work in a shop (as a receptionist) with my mom who’s got like 20+ years under her belt..and she can not stress enough to all the new people coming in to do a strand test. We would cut a small piece of hair and do the strand test that way like you said!
Yeah that's what my mum does. As a kid I'd find random bits of wrapped up hair that she was testing on the kitchen windowsill lol. She says that's how she was taught to do it.
If only hair dressers would be honest😩 like just say “no we can’t get you to a platinum blonde” instead of “oh yeah, I can do that” and we leave the salon with orange hair🤦🏽♀️ I don’t expect miracles just communication 💆🏽♀️
Madison Reed tends to be darker than other dyes in my experience. They label their level 6 browns as medium browns. Their color does lift evenly, though. I did some highlights over a level 5 color, and the results were nice. I think it is because they encourage you to use a gloss on the lengths instead of pulling permanent color through to your ends when you are doing root touchups. I am not a stylist, just a consumer.
I wish stylists were more "do it at your own risk" and not "it is impossible". I went from black box dye to platinum in 1 sitting, granted it took hours but the result was beautiful and I only had to trim like 3-5 CM which honestly needed to be cut even before the bleaching. If I had known it was possible, I would've done it sooner.
Guy Tang seems to do this often. I think that many hairdressers just check the strands periodically to see how the process is going Then decide how to tone it.
My hair is naturally almost black & I can go platinum in one bleach without damage but it just really depends on your hair & if it’s dyed or not. Dark dye is a lot harder to lighten than natural dark hair, and fine hair is more likely to melt than thick.
i had an awesome hairdresser who took me from almost black to pretty much a level 9 blonde in one session, and my hair was obviously dry but not melting or falling out at all. actually it was still strong after the bleach. idk how he did it tho. didn’t even tone, just gave me a purple shampoo bottle and sent me off 💀
@@shanizatulhanis33helps cancel out the orange tones in hair, since yellow/orange and purple are essentially opposites. So it helps get rid of the orangey brassy look that bleached hair tends to take on and makes it more neutral and ashy. That makes it a better slate for hair dye or it just can look nice enough to keep it that way :)
I have dark brown hair and I get it done white ~ my hair lifts really well in one session, I don't need to go back for a second round. I've haven't had any damage except from temporarily to my scalp. I am a short haired guy though, so I'm not sure is different to getting it done with long hair.
Growth (roots) always lifts better, so if your hair is under a few inches, it takes a looot less to do it. You can see in this video where there's the space between the scalp and where she lifted didn't have anything applied, and the same if you watch any other lifting videos. You always have to do the lengths first and then hit the growth, because otherwise you'll have a super uneven lift that was stronger for the growth than the length. But it does also depend on your hair texture, if it's virgin or has been colored with box dye or professionally dyed, how healthy it is. It's chemistry and art, so *everything* matters 😂
Don’t use olaplex so it can lift more. Also dark roots seem to lift to light blonde. I know they say roots lift quicker cuz of heat but it’s still possible for the rest of your hair. Most stylists either don’t know or are greedy
There was only one time where i was able to go from dark hair to platinum i was concerned for my hair the whole time because i heard my stylist say he used 50 volume developer. But it worked and my hair survived and we immediately slathered that beautiful blonde in different shades of blue. It came out AMAZING. THE best dye job i ever had. The blue stayed in my hair for literally 2 years and the only reason it went away was because i cut it all off
Actually thinking about it, i went platinum twice. Once by a professional stylist and the 2nd time accidentally when bleaching my hair at home because i was bored and covid was a thing so nobody was gonna see my hair anyway. I wanted it to come out yellow so i could coat it in green and get a brighter green color, but it came out WHITE BLONDE after only 30 minutes of processing with a shower cap on..... So i scrapped my green plans and went with blue again.
Please never go to a stylist that uses 50 vol developer, 50vol developer is not even available in most countries, WILL cause chemical burns on the scalp and will fry your hair so fast, you can get just as good results with 20 or 30vol and not risk melting your hair off or getting nasty chemical burns on your scalp.
@@gamerofedge8111 I used to use 40 volume and color. No burns, no issues. Most stylists are just worried about the liability now. This was typical 20 years ago.
@@avril.227I literally can't use above a 12% developer, it really depends on your sensitivity and density. 30-40 would absolutely melt my baby fine hair and def cause itchy red scalp. Nowadays I just high lift 🤷🏽♀️
@Mirella Manelli you leave it, or do you OFFER to do something for the client that is unable to have a service, that now has an orange stripe in the back of their dark brown beautiful head of hair?
I have black hair and I've been bleaching for almost 10 years. I went for a root touch up with about 3in of black. Somehow the stylist not only turned my roots white but my entire head. she told me she couldn't dry it cuz I bleached it, I later found out it was cuz she was scared I'd be mad.
I’ve dyed multiple people with hair this dark platinum in one to two rounds of bleach in a day no hair loss or major damage some how some way I’m not even certified I’m just that friend everyone goes to for getting there hair bleached bc some how some way I do it 😂😂😂😂😂😂😂
I have brown hair, but the pigment is not strong, so I can get blondish in one go, but there is a lot of yellow pigment which can be killed with purple shampoo, but still, it looks weird. Believe me. I've tried. Hair doesn't want of this kind of progressive treatment. I have very thin hair. This is why it's always the best way to start bleaching your hair with highlights and slow pace. Take at least 5 sessions. Go easy on you hair. Trust me. I went from blonde to foxy orange/red back to blonde on long hair + I was swimming 3 times per week at that time. 😂 I had long hair and bleached hair take forever to dry. So this is why I decided to cut them short and color them with the shade of my natural hair. 😂 For some time, I was a test dummy to my hairdresser. Every time she dyed my hair differently. I even colored my hair purple for the purpose of singing in opereta. I was wearing elegant emerald green silk dress. I loved it. I trust her, she is such a good skilled hairdresser. Now I have long natural hair and I play with my natural curls. Note to yourself: If you want beautiful hair take your time and take hairdresser's advices very seriously. They know what they are doing.
I'm an exception... my black/dark brown hair goes to honey comb blonde in 1 session at Fantasic Sam's. I have had my hair bleached 3 times, once every 18 months (so as not to damage it too much)
I'm going to be honest, I never do strand tests! My hair is pretty sturdy so damage isn't a big concern, and when it comes to colour, I don't really care what it ends up as. In fact, my favourite hair colour was when I tried going blonde, but got ginger bits in it as well, it was so good. I loved it. However, I have had some disappointments where I do the whole process, only to find that the colour didn't take at all, and I was left with my regular hair colour, but it's easy enough to redo.
Once had a hair stylist take my hair from BLACK BOX DIE to HOT PINK in one session. Needless to say that was the lifestyle mistake of my life. ( also no the pink hair in my profile is not the story I’m telling that’s more recent lol that was done in a healthy way by an amazing stylist)
I have light blond hair naturally. It’s super helpful for when I’ve dyed it in the past since it doesn’t need to be bleached at all! But also my eyebrows and eyelashes are the same color, so I look like I have no eyebrows in the wrong lighting 💀
Maybe your hair strands are fairly fine. Just reading through the comments here and it looks like people with fine hair tend to experience more drastic results compared to those with coarse hair.
It's funny cause I went from dark brown to near platinum blonde in one session and scared the salon because of how easy my hair lightened without any damage
Whooh! That lifted color is insane. I sat behind a classmate once who was STUNNING with super thick, wavy, dark hair. One day she came in, apparently having bleached her own hair and it was this color!! Wild, dark orange. I felt so bad for her. I guess she didn’t know it would happen? But she was still beautiful, I just knew it took a lot of work to get it to blond, which she eventually did, with the help of a professional. 😅
My girl is always super honest with me. And thats why ive continued to go to her for over ten years. If something wont work with my hair she'll tell me flat out it wont work and we try something close.
I'm not professional, I just got my dark brown hair done with a blonde balayage in one sitting. It was super blonde/white after purple shampoo. Loved it
I know people have a dislike for brass hair…but I would lean into it. I think penny color is gorgeous. It can really warm neutral skin color too. I would ask for a way to make it shine like copper and totally ask to make my brows match more. I’ve even use different makeup and pastel it up and I’d use the crap out of burnt umber colors😂 I woulda said bring me to brassy town and I’d stay there for a while tbh until I’m done with brassy town and want to go lighter. I dunno, I think having different colors is fun no matter the color.
I am pretty blonde not platinum probably because I don't own hair. But I have very very dark hair naturally. It takes a good 3-6 months to get my root to the color I have achieved over the years. It's definitely not even because no one helps me its hard to do your own hair lol. But I'm trusted enough to do my sisters and when she let's me take my time and foil everything she ends up with hair she likes.
how ? i can get black box dye (that i have been overlapping multiple times) out of my hair with 3 rounds of bleach in one sitting. virgin black roots you could probably get to warm white only bleaching once cause roots & virgin hair lighten the easiest
@@foliofoliomy hair type. If I work it too much too fast it will fry. Also I am doing it on my own to myself as someone who isn't professional. This is just what I found works for myself to avoid frizz and breakage. I can do my sisters hair one sitting. But because it's not my head so easier work.
Actually If you mix 2 drops of intense ash hair dye in with the bleach and apply as normal in foil, it will lighten it while also toning the brass in 1 step thus eliminating damage. You can do. 30 volume, works every time ❤❤
I used a "very very blond" hair dye to lighten my hair and I got it to a orangish brown which I loved, I did it on the 13th of February and I'm going to do it again in May, maybe a week or a few days before my cousin's wedding
Worked on me: I used 40 V developer with charcole 10x lightner, for an hour (not including putting it in), on black dyed hair (over dyed brown, over pink) and my hair was banana yellow In One Session, and felt very good. May not work for everyone, but I was so happy; my hair is thick and I thought it would be a disaster. It was even and super cute ♡
I have naturally dark brown hair but color it a lot. I wanted to go platinum and when we did the first bleach my hair was mostly my natural color with a little bit of ginger at the tips from previous coloring. My hair tends to lighten very quickly so it only took two bleaches to get it to the color I needed. The toner we used didn’t work for crap so I ended up leaving purple shampoo on my hair for an hour and it turned out perfect! It was slightly light purple for the first couple washes but it was really pretty so I didn’t mind :)
I just had my hair bleached yesterday after getting a straight perm, dying it blue, then purple, then red and using black box dye… it lifted lighter than the video and is a petty pink now! Surprising cause I use a flat iron daily and my hair is extremely fine but no damage
For real I'm a natural level 8ish ash blonde and it took 6+ hours to get to platinum and I had short hair that was in good condition, I had k18/ola in advance and I still had decent damage. I was VERY naive about the process and was like I'm almost blonde what's the difference 🤦♀️🤦♀️🤦♀️🤦♀️
For very dark hair vergin hair supposed to be used 40volume or 12% in 40 to 45minutes and blower it while covering foil, and it depends what the light color what you apply next for about 30% to highlighter
I needed 3 sessions (over a period of 6 months!) to go from black dye (or really dark brown) to white (really white!) And I lost 10cm in length, which was expected before we started. I had black hair at the bottom of my head and blue on the top, I changed the blue to black and the black to white. After a while I went completely dark and now I'm growing out my hair to start again with virgin hair 😊 I want to go back to blue ❤
I’m so tired I thought that meant dark hair can never go platinum. That filled me with an insane panic! It is weird because I’m not even considering going blonde let alone platinum blonde. 😅😅😅
I have natural (very curly) black hair and went platinum blonde in 4 sessions once a week, and did it at home with minimum damage and the curl pattern stayed perfect. I was pretty lucky tbf 😂
virgin hair is much easier to lighten. i can get my hair from black box dye that has been used multiple times & overlapped everytime on my whole head to the lightest shade possible without any toning aka warm white with just 3 rounds of bleach
I would have done 1-1 ratio for the extra strength and used a different lightener like flash lift with bonder inside but thats just my opinion, also leave it for the maxiumum time like 40 minutes not 25
I had a hairdresser so my hair when I was around 15 or 16, I have chestnut brown hair and my hair are very sensitive. I wanted a red ombre and so she bleached half my hair, my hair was DESTROYED after. I still go the ombre and it looked good, but my hair were actual hay.
I have blond hair on the darker side. Not 100% dark blonde, but deffinitely can look brownish in some lightning. Fine oily and straight. What si the best way to get my hair to white? Basically ashy blonde is enough but everytime I tried to request it at hairdresser they managed to make it light yellow and called it platinum blonde. I tried to mix white, blue, gray and purple hair colors few times and not even twice the time of recomended time of leaving it in helped to actually have some significant change(the hair didn’t got dry or damaged at all) also used ashy toners. People say my hair is too strong which is weird becose the strands are really thin. Mind you when I was at hairdressers, just leaving the color in to achieve that yellowish thing took 5+ hours. And yes my natural colour is indeed darker blonde. You could say orangy-beige or the color of Minecraft oak wood planks 😅
My mom went to a salon in Mexico and the hairdresser was literally just putting bleach on EVERYBODIES hair like box dye never existed. My mom lost her curls until she shaved her head to let it regrow.
I hate when stylists say it's not possible it is ive been in between black nd bright blonde for years. No color removers either 40 volume bleach takes it right out IN ONE SESSION.
I used two different purple colors for ten yrs. I decided to go hunter green. Did a strand test ayit was fine. So two days later I continued and I broke out in hives all over my trunk: stomach sides under boob, back. It was wild. Not anywhere the dye touched my skin though. Turned out just like certain laundry detergents that have blue color i also cannot use green Splat nor Green Kiss color
That’s not true. I went from natural black hair to platinum blonde in one session it took about 9 hours. The problem is that most hair stylist say that it’s not possible because they don’t know what they are doing, don’t want to go through the trouble or the time it takes. My hair had very minimal breakage and still looks healthy. If you know what your doing and have the time and patience you can do it in one session.
yes. dye adds colour to the hair, colour remover removes artificial colour from the hair & bleach lightens the hair. many people who try to lighten their hair at home for the first time will make the mistake of buying & using blonde dye (thats i meant to colour already blonde hair to different shade of blonde) instead of bleach and will get no or only little results (because the developer of dye can lift only a tiny bit)
i’m thinking of bleaching my hair platinum but i know my hair is gonna dye if i do that. My hair is right now auburn and i’ve had over 12 hair colors the past two years so my hair would be crisp with bleach
