I went on an interview for an entry level programming job. I got there and seemingly nailed the interview, then I was I informed that I would need to occasionally sweep and clean out the company's wearhouse maybe two or three times a week. The salary was $22,000. And even though I was desperate for a job right out of college, I respectfully turned it down and left. The interviewer, who was actually the owner of the company, seemed really disappointed. He later emailed me with a higher salary offer of $24,000. Nine months later, out of curiosity, I looked and saw that job posting was still open. No one had taken it. Apparently this owner was trying to get a cheap programmer/janitor in one person.

@@JuanGonzalez-ru6ie It was 10 years ago and the company sadly went out of business. It was a Florida based company that did event planning and convention display, kiosk, and POS systems. Oh yeah, I did forget to mention, the owner told me during the interview, that part of the job required travel to different cities in Florida. So, not only did I have to program the computers for each event (which alone is a daunting task because every convention is different with different requirements) but I then had to load the equipment from the warehouse, drive from Orlando to Miami (for example) to install and set up the various systems for the conventions. Then I would have had to stay in a hotel overnight on-call (unpaid by the way), waiting just in case something goes wrong with the equipment or software and the convention needed me. I remember asking if they provided a company vehicle, car or truck. He said I would need to provide my own vehicle and it would need to be big enough to haul the equipment, but...I'd be reimbursed for gas. Whoo freaking hoo. I only remember these details because this was my first job interview after I graduated with my Bachelor's degree in computer science. There was actually nothing wrong with the company, it was how this guy was running it. He literally had THREE different jobs that he was trying to hire only ONE person to do. Job One: Programming the computers for each convention. Job Two: Load the truck, drive the equipment to the conventions and set up. Job Three: Clean the warehouse and maintain the equipment. And even 10 years ago $22,000 a year was just not enough. And apparently other people thought so too because the job seemed to always be open. The job posting would disappear for a few weeks, then suddenly be back open and available. I guess somebody somewhere accepted it only to quit later.

You want to make sure that the employer can actually cut you a check on the scheduled pay date. The thing with entry level software jobs, is that you have a legitimate excuse for jumping ship in a year because your explanation is that you now need a higher salary to support your lifestyle. Also, In this situation I would want my job title, and job duties written down on paper, so that if things go bad, the employer couldn't claim that you were the janitor. Plus never work for "Shares" in a startup company. Someone can offer to pay you in 5000 shares of a startup, and even if the shares are only worth a dollar, you will have to report them to the IRS, and pay taxes on them.

Some of the projects they ask you to complete as part of the application project really do feel like they are just getting free work from you. Just ask them if it is OK if you use the project in your portfolio site and see how fast they decline. You are likely just fixing an actual problem they have without getting paid to do so.

I feel differently here. 1) huge risk of copyright infringement claim if caught as there is no IP assignment agreement on file and 2) it would take as much work to review the quality of work before using it in a product given the employer has no prior knowledge of the competency of the applicant. I would never allow code into myh codebase from someone I don't know without investing in someone studying it. 3) how can code possibly be incorporated unless access is given to the existing codebase as the new code needs to fit into it?

I’ve been in software development for 16 years, here are some pearls of wisdom: Never put less than 5 years of experience on your resume. Lie! You may get fired but who cares, go on to the next job. 2. If a job description wants experience with every technology under the sun, that means they already have someone working that position that they are happy with but state or federal law requires them to post the position.

I went to school for IT and Cybersecurity and wasted thousands of dollars I feel because it’s literally impossible to land an entry level IT role anywhere without actual work experience like she said. Then not only do some companies require a degree, but they also want you to have multiple certifications which can cost a lot money to obtain and takes a long time to study for. I’ve giving up on finding a job in the tech industry after a year and a half of job hunting as it’s outrageously difficult to land even the most basic role. By the time I land a job in IT or Cybersecurity, I would have wasted years of my life as it shouldn’t take someone forever just to find a job you went to school for. So now I’m going to train to be an electrician where companies are always in desperate need for an electrician and it’s a job that can’t be outsourced and will much much easier to obtain. Tech jobs are becoming a career for only people that have multiple years of work experience and certifications. Everybody else can kick rocks it seems.

If it makes you feel better, I've been in the tech industry 11 years and I'm wanting out. My career is not progressing and I just don't have the patience or the personal interest to keep learning stuff I don't care about, just for a job I probably don't want. There is nothing in tech that's grabbing me anymore and I am totally sick tired of computers. My major worry is that I have absolutely no idea what I want to do instead. And cybersecurity absolutely hamstrings your private life with all these legal agreements and government clearance hoops you have to jump through. It's suffocating. There is a level of security clearance in my country where they interview you about the p0rn you're into, you cannot have partners of certain nationalities or ethnic backgrounds, you can't leave the country without permission (you have to give them an itinerary and some countries are banned) and if you get into ANY financial trouble they revoke it. That's not a life. At my former employer anyone cleared to that level gets an immediate 5% payrise to compensate them for the inconvenience.

But Literally there is no one hiring, most, if not all my classmates went back to whatever they were doing before or if they were young enough back to school, with the exception of people that were already in the tech field somehow. I cant help thinking I made a huge mistake wasting time getting into tech. But like you I have no clue what else to do or study (if that's even an option). There are some roles where they already have a specific candidate they want to hire, but the role has to be advertised publicly and opened to everyone in order to comply with employment law and HR policy. The person you _do_ want also has to go through the official hiring motions anyway and can technically be rejected. And at my organisation you'd be a Band 1 Widget Polisher and apply for a role as a Band 2 Lead Screw Tightener. What then happens is the Screw Tightening team interview you. They then just promote someone they already had and you are "invited to apply" (i.e. given sloppy seconds) for that person's old Band 1 Screw Tightener role. But they don't know when that role will be available on the internal job board, we'll be in touch but keep your eyes peeled. That's not a promotion and not what I applied for. "F" off and stop wasting my time like that.

Never develop any software as part of the "interview" process, as that's work for free. If they ask you to perform some basic things just to check your skills, such as make a class that performs some general stuff that can't be easily integrated into a product, then sure, they're probably genuinely testing some random skills to get an idea of where you're at. But anything polished resembling (or being close to functioning like) a product is a BIG NO-NO.
@ShipWreck68
@ShipWreck68 10 месяцев назад
Its much worse than you think. At the senior level they want you to basically run their company for them. Companies throw out a job posting asking for a Senior level software engineer and they do this knowing they have all the time in the world. This is because they want to wait for an All Star programmer to come along and come in to do all the work later. Go to any job board. Look at the companies who are listing the jobs. Coding jobs don't have license requirements or even requirement for a CS degree. Engineering degree is best bang for your buck, because you can't be an engineer without coding now. These are filters they’re using to discourage people from applying. If you get an interview with these companies you notice what they’re asking for is more reasonable. It’s annoying and they should be transparent. But, with 2k or 3k people applying per role I can see why they’re doing it.

Entry-level job listings have always been kind of like this, but from the examples you've chosen, at least, they are getting worse to the point of being ridiculous. Nobody has to have everything in a job listing, that is something people have pointed out for years. But these go beyond the usual evil. Your sneaky theory that they are looking for mid-level (or senior-level) devs who are desperate... very likely. Of course many management types are just greedy and clueless. It's hard to be sure which factor dominates the result.

Thank you for finally saying what I have to thinking for a good couple of years now! As someone who is trying a career change into tech from a non-tech related field, the ideas that you covered in your video are the main reason I have yet to have any success, like I mean zero luck rejections within 6 hours of applying to jobs that seem like a good fit or not applying because I only fit 40% of the requirements (because the other 60% are outlandish), it is extremely disheartening!

I tried to get one of those so-called "entry-level" positions. Yes they required BS with a few years experience. I have a BS in CS and worked on computers at college for a couple of years. Not enough. I even tried to go the Intern route. Nope. I lucked out and a university saw that they needed to retain my skills in computer repairs, setting up networks, setting up and managing computer labs. But the pay just levelled out. Sadly, the way to go is to get some CompTIA certs, MS certs, and Cisco Cert and work as a DOD contractor, where the pay is really good. Oh and the ones that require security clearance. If you are leaving Armed Forces and have a clearance, that would be your best bet is to get one of those DOD contractor jobs that require clearance.

We need certifications like doctors and lawyers for engineering. Only those who are certified with a college degree should be allowed to work. Without regulations it becomes a free for all and no one gets a job. Plus you’ll be getting the entire world eating away at your job opportunities. We needed worker unions for engineers too. This is getting ridiculous. Finally Indian cheap labor IT is a death knell everything it touches dies.

Ha ha.. great points! I love the ones that want "top security clearance", like if I had one of those and making $200,000 a year, why would I leave what I have for you? Who is sitting around doing nothing, surfing the internet for jobs, with a security clearance in hand? Wouldn't that necessarily be putting that clearance at risk of expiring or being revoked? Sometimes, companies just need to be seen as hiring, for political or investor reasons, or for the HR department to have something to do, and as of lately, for the government to just hand the company free money.

And, we are admitting 90,000 foreign students, all of which can apply for an OPT work visa (and come at a 15% discount over local workers). The way to stop that is to extend OPT to all students and the unemployed. This would put us all (foreign and domestic workers) on a level playing field, and finally give us an equal competition for tech work.

If they’re asking for someone to do a project for an interview and not pay or hire, it sounds more like an elaborate bait and switch scam for free labor. In other words, they needed some program derived from the project, got the guy to do the heavy lifting for them, and took it the rest of the way. An interview shouldn’t require you to go to that extent to test skills.
