I'm 71. Four months ago, I didn't know about CPTSD, dysregulation, dissociative amnesia or a host of other trauma issues. I actually felt disoriented when I recognized myself (my behavior) as textbook freeze/flight. I'm tired and I'm sad, but thanks to the many, many, many teachers I have found on RU-vid, I have learned to love myself and my body is healing.

Dissociation and dysregulation is so hard bc it requires a level of presence in order to catch it but the lack of presence is the trouble in the first place. Hope your healing journey goes well ☺️

I wish that/your stuff would be teached in school. Everybody should have at least the chance to learn about it, to know that healing is possible. The world would be a better place. I will be forever grateful finding your courses.

The way my system manifests illness when I'm dysregulated for too long is through my mental health. And I've been seeking healing for a long time and the thing that has been stabilizing my system the most is learning about the nervous system with some of these excercises. I hope to do the sbsm program next year to really work closer with the work. But it is a slow process which can make it easy to get distracted and not follow through. But I keep rededicating to the practice because I know I can regulate my system . identifying as someone who CAN Heal and switch out of the victim mindset is when I really grasped this. I love that you talk about feeling deserving of being able to be well. I'm so grateful for this work.

This work, as Irene says, is exactly like learning a second language. I learnt two languages - French and Portuguese - as an adult and now I am learning the somatic language of the ANS. The absolutely amazing thing about learning a language is that it brings other worlds into being. Or rather, we enter into new worlds, ways of seeing, interpretations, and being in the world. Or again, they have always been there, we just have the tools to access them. As I engaged with my somatic body work, it felt as is I was returning to infancy where my previously misunderstood or not even seen/heard bla blas, gagas and inarticulate expressions about my body, my life, my way of being were suddenly reflected by someone who knew the language. It resonates. A mirror was held up and I knew that what I was trying to articulate was indeed a language. A language that is enabling me to heal. And so I am slowly moving from indescribable, not so articulate sounds and body reactions to learning the language through somatic ANS work. And I feel less alone. I didn't realize I was trying to talk a language that no-one recognised as such in my life. Doing SBSM is being part of a collective process of adults, hurt but determined people, learning this language together.

A client with whom I work has exactly that mindset as mentioned at 17:45. She believes she is the worst of the worse and that's why she's had to go through all of the abuse. Because of that her will to die keeps being stronger then her will to live and recover. On one level she wants to heal but on a deeper level she doesn't believe she is worth it and she wants to die. And that sense of worthlessness stems from a situation that happened in the family before she was conceived. She was the 'replacement' child for a baby who died before her (young) mother was pregnant of her and her mother was still grieving and anxious when she was pregnant of her (and grieving ever since). My client felt she shouldn't have lived, her dead sister should have. Everything else that happened to her afterwards seemed to her as a proove of the fact that she is not worth of living, her life is a mistake. I give her my company and my invitation to connection and I try to educate her about the nervous system, about how babies can take on emotions while they are even still in the womb and how little children in their minds can come to wrong conclusions about situations and people. But I cannot give her her will to live! That can not be learned, it is innate. I can just hope she will find it in herself...

Trauma caused many energetic reversals in my body. I had nadis (spiritual energy centres) spinning in the WRONG direction. It also f*cked with my body's natural polarity ie. left side feminine, right side masculine. Energetic healing is a must to truly heal~! Just release the shock and everything will right itself.

I will say that a stellate ganglion block helped with my ptsd. It turned off my adrenaline pumping so much into my system. I’m still dissociated, but I no longer have to take medication to regulate my ptsd

I just started watching this but I am 22 and have extreme pain and issues that people usually don't get until in their 60s and I am reading a book about healing and letting go of pain and how his patient's, even with x rays that show serious issues, have no pain in their bodies. Like what you mentioned, so I'm on the road to recovery

Hey there, what is the book you mentionned? How would you say it has helped you the most? 29 here, been dealing with debilitating chronic pain since 17 after a spinal cord injury, and up to now every "treatment" the doctors have put me through have only made everything worse and harder to deal with. Really hope to find some alternative that isn't poisonous and start feeling alive and living again. Thank you!

As someone with no living family, and nobody that I truly feel 'safe' with; I don't understand how to do this alone. I have taken various courses online, and while the information is helpful and makes sense, the practical day to day decisions and processing needs to be something I discuss with someone. I don't understand how to walk this path alone and while living solely in my head. I don't expect anyone to do the work for me, but a guide, a mentor, a coach, someone to check in with is critical for me personally. Thoughts? Ideas?

I get you I feel the same. My world feels like it's through a screen after the last two years. I do have some living famiky, but they have Aspergers and now my Dad's had a stroke. We live very remotely. I'm a sensitive extravert and really struggling with the isolation and practicality of living so remotely but without privacy....struggling too.

Apart from having therapy, joining a support group can be really helpful. A group like ACA, adult children of alcoholic and dysfunctional families can be incredibly helpful. The meetings are often online and virtually free.

OMG...I am in the exact same position. I have two grown sons who I adore, but have lived all of my life without any real family, and after my mother died in 2021 the gates of major depression have opened and swallowed me whole. I wake up and struggle to find motivation to get up and go through the motions once again. I had a therapist but had to fire him after his meltdown in reaction to my disclosure that I wasn't getting enough help from our sessions. I so need someone to speak with about all this. I have contacted one of the therapists who is on Irene's staff but no reply yet. I think I will send the same request to all of them. Beggars can't be choosers.

Hi Susan Shearer, Jen here from Team Lyon. It sounds like you have a desire to be in connection with others as you explore this work. There are different ways that you can explore doing this connection. It may also be helpful to remember that when we have a history of trauma, part of the learning and healing often involves learning how to feel safe, both in ourselves and in the presence of others. Practicing connection with nature, with art, with animals, can help to build the ability to feel safe around others too. I'll link to one of Irene's related videos. In terms of doing this work in connection with others, often it's helpful to do some work with a 1-1 practitioner. This can be a great complement to participating in Irene's course or program (the 21 Day Nervous System Tune Up and SmartBody SmartMind) where you also have access to a community of people doing this work and to trained professionals who answer questions. As Esther mentioned, joining support groups and other types of groups - online and/or in person - can also often be ways to meet people who are interested in authentic connection. It can take time when we've been on our own for a while, and there are lots of people out there who also want to be in connection. One other thought - you mentioned too that you don't know what to walk this path alone and while living solely in your head. One important distinction to note related to this work is that it centers around learning to live more in the body. This can take some time, as often if we've been living in head, we've done so for a reason, and it can make a huge difference in how connected we feel - to ourselves, to others, and to the world around us. @@IreneLyon I guess I did not articulate myself very well with my question. I actually meant.. how do we do Irene's work alone? I can watch videos all day, but I also need someone to discuss those ideas with; I am not an island and I personally do not learn if I cannot discuss what I have learned, my interpretation, etc. As far as any 12 step programs, they just are not for me. Too many rules and no opportunity for discussion. There is no dialogue in those groups; I have tried CODA and EDA, it is literally just sharing with no input or discussion. To me personally, that is not helpful. I need to discuss. I have messaged 25 therapists and life coaches. Of those, 17 never responded, and the others said they are not taking new patients. So... I have actively tried to be part of my own recovery/healing, whatever, but I am not finding any help in the process. I have no idea where to turn or to whom to turn. Maybe this clarifies what I apparently did not adequately articulate in my comment.

yes, we don’t have a reset and we also don’t have a delete button. Nothing can’t be deleted or destroyed, only transformed/transmuted. We only have the following two operational buttons: 1) Allow 2) deny We are subject to the universal laws of conservation of energy and momentum and the law of reflection/attraction

What do we do if we have difficultly believing that we deserve to heal, particularly since so many of us have difficulty believing that we deserve anything good? This seems like a crucial question to me, but I haven't seen it addressed anywhere in your written or online materials.

I have bad ptsd, anxiety and pots, the tremor in my body and being off balanced when I walk started when I was psychologically tortured by my ex who was a mercenary in the 80s, he was much older than me, it was trauma based mind control, military style. Plus I was tortured and abused all my life, starting with my mom and dad when I was little. My list of symptoms and illnesses are long.

You’d think such an essential program would be more affordable. I’m on disability from my childhood trauma. I get $900 from ssi. I’d literally never be able to afford this. I understand valuing your work, but you very much sold your program as essential to healing but then it’s only accessible to those capable of shelling out $1200. At least you said who your work was based off, so I can go down that rabbit hole myself. Also your comparison to healing the CNS being like learning a second language was quit helpful. So thanks for that.

Hot take: all “there’s no such thing as free will” arguments are begging the question. If you assume that free will is an illusion, you can freely interpret anything that gives the appearance of choice as just an illusion and “actually, you’re just mindlessly executing your brain chemistry which makes it seem like you have a choice but you really don’t”. No matter the example you give: vanilla or chocolate ice cream? Ask out sally or Suzy? Vote R or D? Take a nap or clean the house? All of them are choices, but all of them could be dismissed as just executing a decision you were always going to make even if you didn’t realize it. Anti-free will arguments are a pet peeve of mine.

This video makes me feel gross, because I grew up in an abusive fundamental Christian environment where we were constantly told that any illness we experienced was our own fault for not praying enough or not being close with God. Also, people with chronic disabilities get gaslit a lot that they're "just lazy and not trying hard enough" which can *cause* trauma. Fortunately for me, I've already realised that I want to do what I can. I accept that I might not be able to heal everything, but I would like to try heal the parts that I can. I know I've already healed somewhat because I am comfortable listening to my own body about what can and can't be healed in the present moment (and telling people "no" if they try push certain things that I can feel aren't going to happen right now). Also, I know I deserve to feel a bit better than I do now - even if I never feel completely healed.

I don't believe its Irene's intention to suggest that people who have chronic illness are at fault - in fact, there are many factors that may contribute to chronic illness as it sounds like you're aware - and I hear how it may have come across this way. Hi Irene, I was wondering how you would handle survival stress when it’s related to something that’s happened online, ie - virtually. I’ve found, especially during lockdown, that everyone has often had to hold relationships online (friendship as well as romantic) and when things don’t run smoothly and triggers occur, you’re often left in your own environment, unable to reach the other person (see, gauge expression, feel their energy/mood) and there is this weird feeling of powerlessness and constant threat that is present but it’s not in your environment, specifically, but in the virtual environment, and even though orienting helps, it’s still hard to believe you’re safe in your physical environment when all the bad virtual stuff can happen anytime you look at your phone or computer etc and it seems to permeate everything more because you can’t reach the person in the same way you would if you lived with them or could just pop around and see them. Just a thought I’ve had lately, as I’ve found that online relationships can be extremely triggering if things go pear-shaped because it’s like grabbing at thin air - many thanks 😊

Hi Jessica, Seth here with Team Lyon. You're right that online-only relationships certainly pose some challenges, as us humans are wired to actually be together physically in the same space. That being said, when we get triggered into survival stress, be it in person or online, from the viewpoint of this work it is our responsivity and ours alone to work with that survival energy and find resolution, because if we are triggered the issue is ultimately about us and our past, not the other person. Also, trying to engage the person who triggered us into helping us resolve the survival stress that got activated, almost never works. One suggestion for distance relationships is to go old school - ditch the screen, and return to the good ol phone call. I've found that there can actually be a lot of closeness and intimacy when we are just attuning to each others voice, rather than through the screens and computers.

Is it possible to achieve results when you’re still living an environment that’s triggering your nervous system? I’ve been doing DNRS by Annie Topper but this focuses primarily on the limbic system. I’m still struggling with poor sleep, body aches and pains and virus recurrences. I’m beginning to wonder now if it’s because I’m still in the same environment that landed me in this mess in the first place (marriage). I feel trapped. I’ve been a STAH for 11 years raising our young girls mostly on my own whilst supporting his business which has required extensive travel. When I was 17 it was “easy” for me to flee my environment and empower myself to break free from the dysfunction, but I didn’t know what I’d been living through then walked back into the same environment. I’ve been trying to heal as it’s not that easy right now to just up and leave (we have two young girls), but I’m starting to wonder now if my lack of results is because I’m still in the same environment and it’s one step forward, two steps back? I’ve just come across your channel right at a time when I was going to take up bikram yoga again in desperation to just “do something” and also to give myself a sense of not giving up. I’m not one for giving up 💪🏻👊🏻

I also have found Feldenkrais incredibly helpful but as far as I can see it is more mechanical. It is great when you can join up the emotional with the physical to reach a cure. I do work on the body through my IFS therapy training and with clients.

Hi Esther Abergel, Jen here from Team Lyon. Great to hear that you're finding the Feldenkrais work helpful! The Feldenkrais work can actually touch into all levels, including emotional. One of Moshe's (Feldenrkrais) teachings is that the less you do, the more you notice. May be worth exploring if you're curious as a complement to your IFS work.

I have listened to 10 plus hours of these videos, not much but more than nothing. I love the hope. I am doing the free videos, which do seem to be mostly promos. Is that true. Having said that, I have learned a few things also, such as: Overall, it is crucial to listen to my body’s needs, physiological, such as hunger, thirst, not staying too cold or too hot, peeing when I need to, etc. I need to not just listen but act, do not wait, to meet those needs. This makes a lot of sense to me, intuitively and otherwise. Is there anything else I am missing from the videos? Do I just need to sign up for the programs to learn more? TIA

Hi Lisa, Seth here with Team Lyon. If by 'this' you mean nervous system issues, symptoms, autoimmune conditions, etc... then that is not unusual at all. When we've been holding unresolved trauma in our body without knowing it, that can only go on for so long. Some people just carry it until it kills them, but for others the symptoms start to emerge late in life, often precipitated by some event - a car accident, surgery, a fall or other injury, sickness, loss of a relationship or job, a move - it could be anything that tips the system over the edge such that it can't package it up anymore. Or, there may no precipitating event and the system just reaches a tipping point on it's own.

Encouraged and discouraged at the same time. I have often wondered if it is too late for me, that is definitely how I feel. so if this dusqualifies me from actually healing, why go on? there is a very small part of me that believes that maybe I could get just a little better, maybe. is that enough?

Ellen - Not everyone has a fully developed nervous system. If a young child does not get the care and nurturing they need from at least one loving adult in their life, or if they suffer various traumas, their ventral vagal system will never myelinate fully, and they won't learn true coregulation which means they might not learn to self-regulate. It's still possible to learn as an adult, it just takes time and consistent practice.

Question: does this work’begin’ after one of assuming one has self worth and enough self love and trust to have accomplished the basics of life; partner, family, career etc? If one has not been able to get there or has difficulty believing they deserve a decent life … is that a prerequisite to this work? Is being able to master a new language a prerequisite? If you’re struggling with feeling you deserve it, is there nothing to assist with that? Prayers? Maybe be specific about how much you need to be able to focus, study, believe and have self discipline vs those who are remedial? I thought a lot of trauma affected self love, despair etc? What do those drowning in those beliefs and exhaustion both from trauma and depressed do? Am I missing pieces???

You are correct. You have to believe you are worthy, and many of us were broken down by caregivers along with religious messages (even though they say god loves you, they sometimes combine it with threats and tell us we are inherently unworthy and bad). And many of us did not have the education, support, or even verbal/thought skills to understand what was going on. Free will is a prickly thing. I think some have more than others, and it takes some sort of jolt from an outside source (the internet has been instrumental in a lot of this). You have to have awareness first (like pinocchio waking up), and then you need the information to start making educated choices. Sadly, many of us didn't get any education that would have given us free will (I'm still not sure everyone has it to the extent they think they do). And, yes, many people don't have a safe environment in which to heal, nor do they have the time (they may be the only individual trying to keep food on the table, with no pennies to spare). Some trauma and exhaustion is so bad, the ability to focus is shot (therefore the person can't even respond or read, etc.) But if you can, start picking up as much information as you can and start the new path within your own mind, and see what happens. ***Having said all of that, it IS true that we can heal ourselves, sometimes. We can lessen our pain and suffering. We can do more than we think we can, if we have the tools. We don't always end up back in a perfect state of health, but we can stop the spiral, and we can even become mentally stronger so the pain doesn't seem so overwhelming*** Please take good care of yourself. This journey can be exhausting, but you are no less worthy than anyone else. 💓

I recently started listening a lot of your videos I treat them as podcast. Thought I am in the process of escaping the toxic environment I try bit by bit. I did the de- stress exercise and I was able to sense but every time a sensation comes up I feel like I will die up until recent I was in deep freeze.

@@lilac3683 - Seth here with team Lyon. The first thing to know is that if nightmares have started happening in the last couple weeks, this is actually a GOOD sign in the context of trauma work. Though they can be disturbing, the emergence of nightmares like this shows that the system is starting to come out of freeze, and the underlying sympathetic activation (fight/flight) is moving more freely in the system, and playing out through the subconscious mind during sleep. So while I don't know of any way to not have them, and in fact I wouldn't want to suppress them because they are an important, and normal part of the trauma healing process, there are some things you can do to work with them. One, you can use whatever resources you have to soothe and settle upon awakening, and the 4 steps to calm overwhelm and ancient anxiety medicine links that Jen shared above can be very helpful with that. It also can be very good to write down what happened immediately upon awakening, which can help bring the subconscious material more into consciousness, which is where we want it, so we can work with it. If you have clear recall of the nightmare then, when it is daytime and you are in a safe place, you can willingly go back into that and change the experience - i.e - fight off the monsters or successfully flee from them using your imagination as well as motions of the body (for example, in sitting letting the legs 'run' while visualizing your successful escape, or giving yourself magic laser fingers and annihilating the threat - and actually move the hands and arms around while imagining this). These are all ways of engaging our imagination and energy to bring forth those survival responses that are fueling the nightmares, and change the outcome. Also, this work can be well supported by working with a good practitioner.

@@IreneLyon Thank you for your reply though were I live there is no access to mental health help. And considering I am only 17 and still in the process of shifting to study abroad and getting away. Though I am doing little what I can but not all because in case I break down and fall into lapse my getting out of this country will get impossible so I would also like some tips for taking care of myself for durational period and which exercises are there that I can try safely.

It's possible that taking steps to grow nervous system regulation and capacity may help with lipedema because increased regulation impacts the neuro-hormonal signaling systems of the body. As you may know, the exact cause of lipedema is unknown. It runs in families and may be inherited, and it occurs almost exclusively in people assigned female at birth, and usually starts or gets worse at the time of puberty, pregnancy or menopause. Because of this, there is likely a connection to hormones. So it could definitely be worth exploring, especially given the other benefits that can come from doing this work.

Ok. I am here and I am ready. Im doing the work. I see ZERO improvement. I dont have one major trauma… just physical stuff, and chronic stress. I am trying but There is NOTHING I do right now that I love. I am staying alive fir my son. I can t share anythi g with my family. Neither my friends. The alternative activities I am physically able to do I Honestly dont love deeply. This illness stole all my passions….. I m discouraged I dont think my trauma is to big because I dont have a big trauma so Im even wondering whats wrong with me then….its like I don’t have a “reason” to be that sick because zi dont have a big trauma. Its like im digging for stuff that did not happen…..? I have done all the treatments, natural or not, hyperbaric, infra red, eating organic and balanced, movement ( cause im unable to exercise I have PEM) I have been practicing every day. What am i doing wrong?

genevieve Baril, Jen here from Team Lyon. I hear and relate to much of what you shared and am sorry that you have to go through this. From what you've described in your various posts (I just replied to another question you asked), it sounds like a history of early trauma is likely in the picture. This doesn't mean anything egregious necessarily happened - early trauma can stem from a difficult birth, early medical procedures, or simply having parents who were anxious or not around much (to give you a few of many examples). When this is the case, the overall emphasis often needs to be more on growing the pool than feeling the balls (to refer to Irene's metaphor) and this takes time and practice. The approach of titration I mentioned in the other answer is a key part of this too as often the system never learned what it felt like to ride little waves, to feel little bit a time. Doing the deeper work of SmartBody SmartMind may be something to consider, as may be working with a nervous system practitioner specifically trained in working with early trauma. Healing in this way really is possible, and it is often a gradual practice that can take time and patience.

And it made me feel unworthy, awful, not enough or too much. As a child I think I almost have been over reacting or trying to catch good or bad attention. I always been talking a lot in school. Also was always the best at ALL i have been toutching. First in school and in all sports, etc. Im Sorry for multiple questions. Im waiting on march SBSM impatiently. I have a Feldenkrais practioner and a neuropsychologist who is in line with early trauma and link with body, but gives more kinda relational and emotion processing advice…. Im practicing every day, either orienting, feeling resistance, overwhelmed, de-stress, etc. I love being outdoors, and all my passions are in nature: snowboarding, xc skiing, biking, hiking, mountain biking, surfing. I need the fresh air. I need my blood to pump. But my body wont let me. So what I need to heal ny body wont let me. I gained weight cause cant really exercise which makes me more ashamed, awful, unworthy and disgusting. Its a horrible vicious circle cause ai cant use the tool I know that worked to self regulate ( go for a hike/bike ride/sweat it out…)

@@genevievebaril4746, Jen here again. It can be frustrating for sure when we can't do the things we want to do, the things that nourish us. It sounds like you've doing quite a bit. As it sounds like you're chomping at the bit to heal, I will add that both personally and as a practitioner, I've found the touch work combined with what Irene teaches to be the most direct path to regulation, capacity and healing if that's an option. The touch work can be done remotely as well if there aren't any practitioners near by.

Daniella, Jen here from Irene's team. As you may know, a stellate ganglion block (SGB) is a medical procedure that (generally speaking) "blocks" certain sympathetic nerves via injection of an anesthetic. It's commonly used for reducing symptoms of pain and for symptoms of PTSD as the stellar ganglion has a connection to the amygdala, which is overactive in PTSD. Given that this is a medical procedure, it's outside the scope of the nervous system work that we do here. I have heard that for some it can be helpful for reducing symptoms, and it may also provide a foundational platform to do more NS regulation work (which is what Irene teaches). My understanding is that as this is an injection of anesthetic it will eventually wear off and so it's unlikely to sustainably shift underlying nervous system dysreguation. Hope this helps to give you some food for thought.

The short answer is yes, this could be related as trauma and nervous system dysregulation impacts all systems of the body, including the immune system and ability to mount an immune response. One point I'll clarify a little is that in this work, we look through the lens of the autonomic nervous system and what happens in the physiology. This can include thoughts and emotions, and it can also include sensations, movements, images, and more.
