Soul Edge was the best name, with Soul Blade a close second. Soul Calibur is more distinct but it only sounds cool now because we associate it with the games.

You cant. Lindell tried to shoehorn his "copyright" of edge gaming to bully people making them believe that he owns the word edge. When in fact he didnt. You cant copyright a public use/domain word Thats why companies like Coca Cola try not to make their branding public domain by people associating sodas with the brand. As it if becomes public domain they lose the copyright as everyone uses the word. Sure Apple technologies exist. But suing an apple juice factory for the use of the word apple is idiotic. "Apple Technologies" and their hardware/software is copyrighted. Nit the word Apple. But not a lot of people know that so companies try to bully other people like Lindell did.

Company should be limited by the same rules as passwords so that companies can't be given the names of common words and used to copyright them.

They can have the enemy literally only say "I have a tiny penis" and Lindell would probably rewrite his website so he can claim that was a catchphrase of one of his games.

In the world of model railroading, there was someone who registered a trademark for the old Pennsylvania Railroad's "Keystone" logo (introduced by 1887 at the latest, from my research, and used on all freight cars and locomotives from 1930 until the 1968 merger into Penn Central), then attempted to force every manufacturer of model railroad schtuff that had ever released anything decorated with a "Keystone"-adorned PRR livery to pay him licensing fees, royalties, and back royalties--which, since PRR had the most freight cars of any US railroad in the most popular era for modeling (1930-1965), basically meant literally everyone. Fortunately, this one had a happy ending. See, someone thought to check and see if the PRR's original trademark on it had expired. It turns out that, after the Penn Central merger, though the "Keystone" logo was dropped from the official branding, Penn Central (and its later, post-bankruptcy, sans railroad identity of American Premier Underwriters) had continued to use the logo for the page numbers in their annual report, so that they could demonstrate under US law that the trademark was still in use and thus not lose the rights to it. APU, being a massive company, proceeded to sue the IP troll to smithereens, then set up a standing offer that continues to this day: anyone making model railroad products can license the use of their railroad trademarks (including the PRR, New York Central, and New Haven logos and liveries) for the price of a single sheet of printer paper, an envelope, and a postage stamp, by printing out, signing, and mailing in a standard no-cost license agreement available through their website, just to make sure this doesn't happen again. Most, if not all, of the major US railroads have done likewise; some even allow the agreement to be signed and filed electronically. Like I said, one case where a copyright troll resulted in an industry-wide standard that was basically putting on a pair of football cleats and proceeding to stampede up and down his carcass.

As much as I hate SKY, in this case they did have a valid legal point. They were able to prove in court that their technical helpdesk was getting many calls a day from people with Skydrive problems who thought it was owened by sky. Hence there was clear evidence that Microsofts name was causing brand confustion.

But Skype still exists.

@@h3llbring0r unlike edge, Sky were not attempting to stop any brand that contained the word sky, they had genuine proof that MS Sky drive was causing brand confusion. I can only guess that skype has never caused confusion because it predates sky joining the technical arena by over a decade and users were aware that skype had nothing to do with sky. It was simular with Apple. Apple records predates Apple Inc, there was never an issue until Apple moved into music. Then the court cases started.

@@leojrthetanooki8031 Oh, it wasn’t me. I was in pretty regular contact with Mobigame at the time and so something I wrote ended up in the massive pile of evidence. I felt sorry for David and the folks at Mobigame, though, having their game repeatedly pulled from the App Store. And I think they recently abandoned their trademark as well.

Sadly, EA is a anti-heo so they can only be so heroic.

Trademarks are weird. You can't copyright dictionary words but you can TM almost anything.

He technically copyrighted "The Edge" which was the name of his company, then went nuts thinking his copyright extended to any use of the word Edge on video games,it didn't and EA sued him over it and won.

@@KasumiRINA Funny thing with that common dictionary thing. If the word becomes so popular it becomes the common name for it, the copyright is lost to public usage. Its why Nintendo had the "we are not Nintendo" ads, and why Google hated the term "Just google it".

Because capitalism needs to enshrine exploitation as a right for the owning classes, they created copyright law to ensure that creators and artists could be given a one-off pittance to allow moneyed-businessmen to profit from somebody else's work in perpetuity. Copyright law is a total scam. That said, and with this in mind, given the conditions we are expected to exist within, it is of utmost importance that creators "play the game" so to speak and fight for every right to their work that they can, until we can abolish it entirely, and that we consumers try our best to reward the correct people as much as possible. There's no ethical consumption under capitalism, but we can *try* to keep each other clothed and fed and sheltered while *trying* to minimise exploitation.

Its to prevent your product or organisation with a _distinct identity_ from being imitated by your competitors. This is why you can't open a fast food business called "KFC". A company is already trading with that mark. Your application for a trademark will be rejected if you don't make it _distinctive_ enough. You can't literally trademark the word "trademark" for example because its from the dictionary and has a prior meaning. Langdell was literally trying to copyright a word from the English language, the total and utter tw@t.
