Why You Could Ditch the Pumpsack for Your Pad | Save Weight with Multi Use Gear

This is an easy gear hack that I picked up off RU-vid a while back and have tried on a couple trips. It saves you weight by utilizing something you're probably already carrying in your ultralight pack.
Using your pack liner as the pump sack of your sleeping pad takes a little more fiddling than using a store bought pump sack. But it'll save you some weight and space in your pack. I probably wouldn't do this if I had a really long trip, but it works great for an overnighter or a few night trip. Also, I wouldn't be overly forceful pushing air into the pad as you don't want to blow out the seam of your liner.
The liner I'm using is a Nylofume pack liner. But there are different ones made out of different materials. Some are sturdier than others.
If you decide to try this out, be sure and practice at home before you go on your trip. Worst case scenario, you end up having to blow up your pad the old fashioned way. Ugh!

Thanks Liz. I used to just blow up my pads by mouth. But had one that I can see mold through the material. Really grossed me out. Trying my best to only use pump sacks now.

Or use the pump sack as a pack liner

You sure could. But in most cases, the pack liner is a little lighter than the pump sack. And this could also be a good alternative if someone doesn't already have a pump sack as it would be a little cheaper as well. But you're absolutely correct that the pump sack could be used as a pack liner or dry bag. I appreciate the idea.

Interesting hack. Was it hard to keep a good seal when pushing the air in?

Not really once I figured out the technique. Had to figure out where to hold it (for my valve at least) so that it didn't close off the pad on the backside of the valve. Works great too because my pack is empty by the time I'm ready to blow up my pad anyway. So there is no inconvenience of needing to Dump out the pack liner or anything. Like I said, I don't see myself doing this if I had to do it every night for weeks. But its easy enough and worth saving a little weight and pack space. Would be good also for someone who doesn't already have a pump sack.

@@CameronHall88 I’ll admit, you got me thinking about trying it! I have tried my pump sack a few times, and I think I could grow to like it. The pack liner is a much bigger volume though. Hmmm 🤔
