Those two dreaded words, music theory… they send shivers down the spines of many. In this video, I am going to show you how it’s possible to make music with no background in music theory whatsoever! I’m going to help you to write in key, understand what writing in key actually means, and overcome a lack of creativity.
We do this in Ableton Live, which you can get a free trial of to work along with the video at this link: www.ableton.com/en/trial/

Honestly, ear training is far more useful than just theory. Once you’ve trained your ears to understand music, learning theory will be dead easy.

Thank you for the best basic tutorial on music theory. I just learned the basic things I need to know as I only play by ear. The happy and dark analogy was good to know.

Hi John - you are a wonderful teacher - I am just starting on Ableton and by following your tutorial on how to record my voice I was able to succeed. Your style of explaining things in such a simple easy to understand way is a wonderful gift that you have . Thank you once again - this has been a wonderful video to watch.

Hello. Two years ago I began to experiment with different keys on my midi keyboard. I came up with a lot of songs. I just went with rhythms. I added other things like drum samples and finished a track. I also learned how to make horror music as well. I learned how to compose classical sounds with the instruments on the DAW I use. I use magix music maker 2014. This DAW has helped me understand how to apply sounds together. It helps me to be more creative as well. I never knew how to play any instrument before this so it was different at the beginning. Now I have a few keyboards and a guitar with different sound on the pedal. I use virtual synths as well to create ambient music. I also use sample packs as well sometimes. I like your video. It's very informative. Most of my music is on my channel. I don't know anything about music theory I do listen to sounds and if it sounds nice then I use it in the creations. Have a great day.

So what's the point of # and flat if C# is the same key as D flat? Is it to help know which direction to go in?

In my opinion, if you don't know music theory to some sort of extent, you are not a real musician, and it doesnt matter how good of a player you are. Being a musician is not about knowing to play really good, it's more about understanding what you are doing. I once met a piano player. He was really good, but disn't know what a scale is (yes, true story). He could play classic pieces and stuff really good, he could read sheet, but he didn't understand why it sounded they way it did. So he was basically a Super-Simon player that used the piano. That's the best way I can describe a player who doesn't know what he is doing, hence not a musician.
