About normalizing fake nails/lashes -- these are also things that look good on camera or from a distance, but up close are harsh and even a little scary.
@heartquaked

Great video. “Target culture” is another behavior that bugs me. Normalizing those jokes I see in memes about going to Target for one thing and leaving with $200 worth of stuff is so troubling to me. I see a lot of women on Instagram who, when they post pics with their kids, have Starbucks coffees in their hands and the caption is always like “girls day #shopping” or whatever. It’s always nonstop consumerism. I hate that they’re teaching their kids that behavior is ok. I think a lot about the people - especially teenagers - I saw on RU-vid like 6 years ago who would post nonstop “makeup hauls” and “bath and body works hauls”! I kind of wonder how they feel about all that waste now. I’m glad the pandemic taught me about how I spend on beauty products and what’s acceptable to me and not. Before the pandemic, I wouldn’t even consider going to work without foundation on; I thought my pores were enormous. Now after almost a year of not wearing it, I realize I look completely normal, and I’ll never go back to wearing it like I did. Before I was always comparing my “natural” self to my “done up” self, which is not a fair comparison.

Target is GROSS!! They are just like the public schools with child grooming. They are reaping their bad decisions right now with boycotting! So is WDW!

💯. Great video. Last year I unsubbed from almost all youtubers who collect palettes. It’s an excessive, unhealthy, and wasteful addiction that encourages people to spend beyond their means. They often claim that they have collections to compare palettes but there are only a few who actually follow through with excellent videos directly comparing color stories and formulas. The average consumer does not ever need a complete set.
@shawnaripari
@shawnaripari 3 года назад
Yes, I've heard that kind of language too. All too often I hear that rhetoric of I need my collection to look like this because I'm on youtube and its my job. It seems like a way to get out of responsibility for what you own or just taking ownership of it and the influence a youtuber has- that goes far beyond product recommendations. There are some beauty community wide trends like palette collecting individual channels can uphold and help to normalize but justify in the name of their job without perhaps thinking of the scope of their influence.

I used to go out for a nice lunch with a friend when we passed our exams. A treat and time to socialise. Now restaurants and bars are closed I think people buy more stuff out of boredom and to treat themselves.

This may be an unpopular opinion, but I feel like this idea that we ALWAYS have to have our "holy grail" in our collection touches into overconsumption as well. I've seen so many people finish say a powder and talk about how they're going to repurchase it immediately even though they already have 10 other powders that work just fine. It's not even the repurchase itself that gets me, its that they don't even try to get use out of what they have before going for a repurchase

I definitely have bought way too much makeup within the last couple years. And I’m focusing on using what I have and retraining myself to be happy/content with what I have. I feel really feel guilty for having so much makeup yet always looking forward to buying something else. I would rather focus on using my money for a foundation for a better future. And experiences that create memories. I have made a goal to use more time to craft, learn new skills, play guitar, bass, piano and sing. I started writing a story like 4 years ago and haven’t finished. I feel self care is giving myself the time to do these things. Time is a luxury and more valuable than stuff (imo) I appreciate your videos and the reality check they bring.

Love this video! I also love that you talked about apologizing for appearances. It hurts my heart when people apologize for stuff like that. Who cares if your brows are crazy or if you are having a crazy breakout. No worries we’re all human!

Thanks so much Kendra! And you're right. Its not just the apology that hurts but seeing yourself as flawed like your brows or hair as "crazy" and unkempt and therefore undeserving of being photographed or videod.

wonderful video! honestly, it's not just the beauty community. I'm a booktuber and even though we share what we've read etc. a lot of of book publishers send free copies to bigger booktubers for promotions, people promote "book hauls" when sometimes one single hardcover book is like $30+ CAD. I got to a point in the early days on booktube where I felt like I just wasn't buying enough or owning enough books....and I'm a librarian. The culture of youtube gets to you and it gets in your head

Ok… I have a counter argument for dupes- kind of. I see these super expensive luxury products promoted everywhere, and I’ve had some serious fomo particularly for a couple of Natasha Denona palettes. However- I simply refuse to spend more than $45 for a palette and that self imposed upper limit is only for something that better be special. So I was pretty happy to discover the ccolor dupes for the two palettes that I really really wanted. Even though I know that a $12 palette isn’t going to be the same quality as a $129 palette, the cheap ones satisfied my desire, and I’ve thoroughly enjoyed experimenting with the color stories. Not as satisfying was trying to find a dupe for my all time favorite shade in a discontinued palette. If I’d known the palette and the shade we’re going to be discontinued I would have purchased a backup. I’ve wasted so much money and hope and time trying to find a dupe only to end up buying the original discontinued palette on Mercari 🤦‍♀️ Bye the bye I really appreciate this vid, you’ve made such excellent points and these are such important conversations to have.
@shawnaripari
@shawnaripari 2 года назад
Hey I feel yah! You're right that sometimes it's just not worth and you can't bring yourself to spend the money. There are some products aka the $130 ND palettes i won't buy almost no matter what and like you a $70 palette is super expensive to me and better be amazing!!! My collection can't be full of palettes at that price so buying something at that price is an exception rather than the rule. In those situations and probably many others a dupe would hit. Thanks for sharing your thoughts here 🙏

Also to trail onto your second point, the treat yourself mentality, when you graduate, pass an exam, get a promotion, etc etc it echoes off of what my mom taught me growing up- "you dont pat yourself on the back or look for recognition and gold stars for doing what you're supposed to do" !!!!!!
@katarinaruda8523
@katarinaruda8523 3 года назад
I only recently got into beauty youtube and I've only been in the conscious consumerism side of the community, so I haven't experienced this pressure from youtube. However, the treat yourself and expensive self care mentalities have permeated my real life. My friends are often spending in ways that I wouldn't and I feel a sort of peer pressure to spend "because I deserve it". I don't know when people came up with the idea that spending a lot of money was self love, but it's pretty concerning.
@shawnaripari
@shawnaripari 3 года назад
I think you said it better than I did. Spending beyond your means in the name of self care isn't self care if it's overspending and creating or contributing to debt
@karolinaendrlova135

Thank you for this amazing video 😊 I also feel like there is this idea that you need to have a larger collection in order to be considered a makeup lover. When I started watching RU-vid suddenly the two eyeshadow palettes I owned were not enough, because so many people were saying things like: I own so much, because I am an eyeshadow lover...
@shawnaripari
@shawnaripari 3 года назад
Yes! To show your "love" and that you're a "real" makeup lover you must own a lot. It seems to be used like experience - you're somehow unqualified to talk about makeup or even love it if you don't have a lot of experience with different kinds of products. Great insight!

I know I'm guilty for "treat yourself" and social media as well my family made me believe that only each special day or some situation in specific to celebrate. one of my aunts told me "you can have what you want any time a day, if you like it you can save and that's it". I have been struggle with that for years, is like I was searching for an excuse to spend for something I like and justified it. And social media only said it's okay for an special moment of that's a way to love you. Too much mkt and guilty feelings

Love this video. The conversation about self care and consumerism is really important. The part that hit me the most (even though I already consider myself a fairly conscious consumer) was the section concerning buying yourself Christmas gifts. I totally do this and see it as this act of self gratitude like you described. Even as Valentine's is approaching I feel as though I should get something for myself (because no one else is) and obviously that now seems so dumb. I will save the earth and my wallet by being single!

I’ve watched/listened to this video 3x so far. Mostly because I was distracted the first time around, and fell asleep for the second time around 😅 you make some really great points about the RU-vid driven consumer culture. I’m at the point at the moment I’m done with constantly having new things pushed on me. I’m going through and decluttering things, moving things around, and downsizing in general. Haven’t gathered up the courage to deal with my hoard of pretty cosmetic products yet, but they’re on the list.

Such a great obvious point self care..real self care..a walk, making your bed, they don't cost anything but it is taking care of yourself. Focusing too much on the buying aspect is taking focus away from this real self care and respect for your standard of living basics. The hoarding of skincare snd makeup is not self care 😒 !

I think if people budget for what they want to buy or services they’d like then I think they can buy whatever they want. It’s definitely easy to get caught up in the trends or the new releases. I used to stock up when there was a sale, now I realise the products go on sale more often now than what they used to. Now I am more careful about what I buy. I love collecting items of all kinds, especially perfumes. However I do use them a lot and go through them.

Really thoughtful video as always! I'm honestly curious (as are probably most of us) how the pandemic is shifting beauty culture. Just from being on beauty subreddits, I think we are witnessing the death of the traditional beautuber, as well as the cultural beauty shift to tiktok (morphe's big collab is with tiktokers and it's a skincare line). Nails and fake eyelashes feel like the big glam, full coverage days of youtube, which I think is going away. Re your last comment on apologizing for your appearance, I'm interested in how the trends will continue to unfold. Alexandra Anele's second youtube channel had her reacting to tiktokkers drawing on fake undereye shadows for fashion. That gave me major pause. If all of our perceived "flaws" (crooked noses, bushy brows, textured skin etc) will all become trends anyway, might as well use that as additional ammunition that we should accept our "flaws." it's only a matter of time before the beauty cycle deems them as "beautiful" when we were beautiful the entire time. 💖
@shawnaripari
@shawnaripari 3 года назад
Wow these are some great insights. I think you're right about the decline of the traditional youtuber and their traditional full glam, as well as a greater shift to tiktok. The strip lashes does seem like its fading out and more of the 2014-16 era and its shifted to the eyelash extensions. I thought that might be a bit of fad but it seems to still be going strong. Sub-niches within the beauty space also seemed to have grown considerably since 2017/18 like anti-consumerism. It also feels more to your point of the decline of glam and more natural makeup has been on the rise for the last 2ish years alongside or even with the rise of micro-influencers. It's quite interesting to reflect on the last 5 years on youtube and I'm curious what the next 2-4 will also look like.

On the bday topic I never got gifts as a kid my family was always broke so as I grew up and started earning money I would give myself around a 100 dollars for my bday to get a gift for myself bcs I never get gifts even now. I guess it’s the whole thing of watching other kids get gifts and celebrating while you are always left out. I’m not mad at my parents about it I understand why my childhood was the way it was only thing I gotta say growing up poor gave me some bad money habits.

I'm glad there's at least one item on this list that I don't relate to. The collector mentality. Why collect all Mothership palettes? Or all Naked palettes? I really don't understand. At that point you just want to buy a palette, regardless of the colorstory, just to complete your 'collection'? Wow. That baffles me. Great video!

I stopped gettijf my nails done at salon once a month.. it was costing me £40 a month.. and it was ruining my.natural nails .causing breakages and brusing . So october 2023 i went online (amazon) and bought a beetles gel kit for natural nails including the lamp and nail varnishes in phrooherr gel.. and clippers etc.. got all this for £32 and will last me years. So now i paint my own nails with the speacil gel included which is causing my own nails to grow long and hard :) and i csn switch it uo mid month if i like :) I done samr with stopping getting my brows tinted, waxed and threaded a month at £30. I now shape my own brows and tint them myself.. i bought eywbriw dye . £9 and lasts months as u onky sqeeze out what u need at the time of usuage :). I also done this with eyelash tint..costing £40/£50 a month..i bought eyelure lash tinting kit.. £9.. lasts months. :)

I fell into the “treat yourself” mentality especially during classes (I’m a college student graduating soon, so yay😊😊) but I saw that since I was going through a lot in school, I figured I could treat myself to beauty products, yet I don’t even wear makeup everyday. I don’t even need it since I’ve improved my skin with a simple routine! Yet the aesthetics of it all matched with the weight of current day responsibilities makes you feel like you should reward yourself with an expensive item when a meal, or a show, or even a walk would do much better!

They want people to see you and think he's something great. It's a man's problem not your. @@shawnaripari I don't think the issue of new releases getting much more views is only on the RU-vid audience.... I think it's clearly pushed by the platform and algorithm because it's money to the companies paying RU-vid via ads and other means. RU-vid is not a content sharing platform anymore IMO it's a business connecting corporations with their consumers via cheap salespeople aka influencers that are masked as being "just another average consumer" leading to us as an audience being engaged in a sales talk without even knowing it and therefore falling for the pressure and manipulation. It's an actual task to find videos using older products or focusing on creating looks w products even if you specifically search for it. They often don't even show up in searches for me if I actually subscribed to the channel.

Self care & hygge are mental health techniques with a dozen or so categories. Buying out of budget stuff is almost never self care. That is just idiots hocking wares. Perfumes, nice soaps, a candle and other sensory goods can be legitimate self care. The way it’s presented by lousy marketing is not. It has to be stuff you can afford and not used in a hyper-consumption fashion.

I'm watching this a year later. It's eye-opening and has made me question my spending behaviour. 😳

I don't have any eyeshadow palettes. I never saw the point of buying a palette for one or two shades that looked nice to me.

Same! Why do buy an eyeshadow palette that doesn't make you feel great at the moment you open and use. Instead, buy one shadow not a huge.

I feel you on the nails. I see these girls with long fake loudly colored nails and all I think of is how men probably think it looks ridiculous. I am all about natural look, good skin to not wear as much makeup and natural clean nails.

Hey hey we all love hearing each other’s opinions!!! However this can come across as very demeaning and make it seem like people, specific women, do things only for men’s pleasure. This can be super harmful but is often not intentional!! Haha :)

@@sasquatch-elk6952 Thank you for saying this. Why would I care what a man thinks about my nails? Strong Pick Me energy.

Where there is an excess, there is a lack- Yiddish Axiom. I overbought from genuinely wanting things or internal issues. Genuine self esteem may help here. I kept hearing guilt & shame driven purchases. Not my thing. If that content causes harm, unsub. Michelle B, Hannah Louise Poston, classic Kimberly Clark, No buy and low buy content are channels which may help. Commentary and strategies instead of endless product review. Look for people with businesses beyond content creation, Fairly local family (zero waste), Doctor Mike, farm-fluencers, Teacher plans, ect. Creators whose only disclosed income is essentially an RU-vid QVC or Shopping Channel is clearly a problematic role model and financial guide.
