I mean they can always try for a doctor's note. Mine didn't disallow pets, but I did get the monthly pet fee waived. At least my doctor was very open to it with pretty much no questions asked.

Let’s not forget: plant ownership utilizes the same *skills* as pet ownership. You have to get a plant/pet that is suited to your home and lifestyle in order to keep it healthy. You have to do your research. If you make an impulse purchase, you face the consequences. A plant is a great starter pet without the animal abuse, yay.
I do partly agree with you, but I would like to add that one shouldn't downplay the skills, time and research it takes to take care of a pet, an actual animal, properly. I know you didn't mean it like that, I just wanted to add for anyone that might not realize that. Keeping Plants healthy is like a tutorial level for some basic skills you need as a pet owner.
I feel like maybe plants are good starters for animals that don’t interact like fish? Honestly for me though keeping up with my dog is easier than plants. I can be a spot distracted but never fear, 95% of dogs (and I hear cats) will let you know forcefully if you are even a little late with dinner or walks. The fact that you only have to do something for a plant at most every few days is the issue for me. Plants can fall into the background but my dog never does.
@@thevisualkiwi yeah! I've been thinking lately that the "levels of pet", so to speak, go like rock < plant < non-human animal < small human. There's probably other levels in there, but this is a decent rough sketch. (And on a personal note, considering how much I'm struggling with the rock to plant upgrade, I'm very glad I don't have a more demanding pet lol.)
It feels like this video was missing something. I couldn't put my finger on it at first, but I think it might be that the "experiment" only went on for five days. I think it would've been valuable to see how you felt about the plants after caring for them for a while. Otherwise, this was great! I'm definitely considering plant ownership more now and I hope we get some updates on your plants in the newsletter!
I have several plants, my favorite is a little cactus, he looks just like the one on the thumbnail, I have progress pics of him growing lol, I haven’t named him, but he is a he, I think it’s nice to have a plant and see them grow up. I also have a succulent that has this really fun geometric shaped leaves, 100% recommend plant parenthood, specially succulents and cactus, they are really hardy plants :)
I agree. Being able to actually see them grow, change, and bloom is what makes them feel so rewarding. I grew some beautiful Forget me nots from seeds over an entire year and he was about 2 feet tall before I decided to cut him. I also named him Leviathan for how tall he grew

Cacti are like the toughest of plants. The previous renters of my current apartment left a pot of cactus behind. It's alive and well. I water it occasionally and now it's sprouting. When I was in elementary school, my mom, bought me a small cactus. The first year I took care of it intensively and it bloomed. The following years got way busier, so it survived mostly on its own, with rain and shine from the sky ( I put that cactus pot outdoor, on a balcony) and occasional watering. It was alive and well years after that ( after I graduate high school). Then my grandmother threw it away, it was still green then.
just neglect it a little bit, most cacti deaths i hear about is people overwatering and fussing over it, or letting it too close to windows when it's cold outside. get that thing roasting in the sun and water when the soil is super dry and talk to it like it's a youtube video. you can always set a weekly reminder on your phone to check on it.
You do it too! I do that all the time, my cactus has very small spines so as long as you don't push too hard they are like little hairs. Glad to know I'm not the only one that's crazy ;)
Well , you should not forget to make an update video on this ! As a proud plant parent , I can assure you that they do connect to you ! My rose plant was about to die and just kept talking to it and tried convincing it to survive . It was leafless and now today it bloomed with a orange flower . I never felt so supportive , at least my plants get me 😬
I love having herbs. Currently I only have one basil, but I'll change that, if I have more then one room and one windowsill. Herbs are usefull, look and smell good and most of them are pretty easy to take care of.
I haven’t finished the video, but personally, I feel like I’ve nurtured my plants and it’s so cool to watch them grow and become healthy. I have a dog as well and I love him too, plants are like a separate love. For example, when a plant dies I genuinely will feel sad for a while, but it’s worth the journey of watching your plants develop and grow.
Right? There's a special kind of satisfaction seeing your plants grow, especially ones you grow from the seed or sapling. Personally, it makes me feel like a parent seeing a child grow.
I don't keep house plants but my mom still has a house plant that she got when I was a baby. As the plant and I near 30, I jokingly think about it being connected to my life force.
When she first took a sip from her mug I saw the beige and thought it was a terra-cotta pot. Which honestly would have been a whole different level of commitment.

@@mermaidismyname to be fair, you can get almost anything as a pet ahaha. but seriously--yes! and they're great! The best way to describe them would be 'mini cat'. They have lots of attitude and are very smart despite their small size. They also like to be held (at least mine does). There is a huge variation of sizes/colors/patterns among the species and they're all very cheap so I have a couple lol. Sorry for gushing but they're just really underrated and fun
My girlfriend has over 50 plants... I have one. I bought it because I thought it was pretty. It is a Calathea Lancifolia. She told me it was a hard plant to take care of as a beginner, but I took it home anyways. I've had it now for over a year, and I am so proud of it. It almost died on me and I cried over this, but it's getting better now. Im just so happy with my one plant. Maybe I get a second one this year.
I used to not like plant all that much, they didn't really interest me. Then my mother planted runner beans in the garden and I loved taking care of them because they provided emotional attachment and food. So it was a win win for me. Now I love to grow herbs and roses so I can enjoy their smells and flavours.

honestly, it takes time, and it depends on your commitment to the plant for you to love it like a pet. I've had a cactus for 3+ years now, and it finally bloomed for the first time. (flower only lasts a day) but it made me so proud and happy to watch it grow in size, make lots of little clone babies, and now flower. I'm looking forward to next year to see what it does next, and I think that's why I love it so much.
I find taking care of my house plants is a form of meditation. It forces me to be aware of my surroundings and reground myself while still having a focus. As someone with adhd I struggle with the stereotypical types of mediation where you sit still on the floor. These meditations are great for a lot of people, but I find having a calm deliberate task to do that I can focus on while also separating from my own internal stream of thoughts to give myself time to breathe and sort my mind out is wonderful. There is also a lot of *anecdotal* evidence that plants respond to our emotions/how we treat them and talk to them. Many plant owners see that the plants they treat more kindly (I.e. pep talks or words of affirmation or gently touching their leaves with affection) do better than their other plants even if their need for water, sun, food etc are all equally fulfilled. There are potential human errors in these examples such as subconsciously giving the preferred plants more immediate care when they need it, but the overall consensus with plant owners that I've seen is that their emotional treatment of the plant does generally have an effect.
Part of my love for my plants comes from how much they’ve grown! My friend rescued some plants from a greenhouse’s trash and when I got my ficus from them it was basically sticks with one leaf. Now my leafy boi is so big and strong! Plant mom 4 lyfe
I feel called out. I've successfully kept a ZZ plant alive for 2ish years now, so I've just started an indoor herb garden and I'm so excited to see my herbs grow.
As someone who was always obsesses with germinating plants as a kid and has gotten more and more into gardening and agriculture in the past few years and picks edible fruit from my university's landscape, I think we would be way happier being connected to where our food comes from in addition to being around more greenery. Currently my roommate and I have about 17 plants in our apartment and a few more outside that come in during the winter, plus started growing the garden indoors.
I never really got how people felt so emotionally connected to their plants until my cactus started growing and growing and budding and blooming. Watching it change and grow really made me feel proud and myself an dthe plant lol.
My snake plant (a birds nest sansevieria) has lived for 11 years, had numerous children that have then gone on to have children of their own and I now give them as gifts to my friends so they can go on the same journey. I’ve also gone through the horror of watching my 20 year old spider plant lose its battle with scale and die. They take time and attention and sometimes dirty work but they make my space a joy to be in.
I own a ton of plants; one of my favorites is Benjamint Franklin, my Spearmint. To me, there is a big psychological appeal to caring for plants. I have struggled a lot with depression and anxiety, and some days I feel like I haven't accomplished anything. On those days, seeing the progress my plants have made motivates and encourages me. It sounds ridiculous, but sometimes I'll just sit and hold my smaller plants and admire them. I love succulents, but I would also highly recommend herbs because they give back generously!
It is an interesting coincidence that Melissa uploaded about how plants can be our dogs, and Backyard Scientist uploaded about touching the most -(plaintful)- painful plant at roughly the same day. But most importantly, I like both videos. They both have -planty- plenty of knowldege

Pro tip: overwatering doesn’t mean giving them to much water at once, it means watering your plant too frequently. For example, in the desert when it rains it RAINS. The reason it’s so arid is because it just doesn’t rain very often. To avoid overwatering your plants get well draining soil, water thoroughly (all the soil should be wet) then allow excess water to drain. Then it’s just a matter of neglecting the plant until it’s soil is totally dry
i remember in 4th and 5th grade I took extra good care of the plants and washed their leaves and made sure they were super clean and healthy. i was really depressed at the time and had next to no friends so I was friends with the teachers, the plants, and whatever birds and squirrels i saw outside lmao I also once killed a succulent plant. how? *i thought it was a plant that needed a bunch of water and so I overwatered it by accident-*
actually i kinda have an explanation at first i got plants for the aesthetics and because they looked cool, but then as i was taking care of them and seeing them grow and make new baby leaves, i was always like "OH MY GOD THIS IS SO CUTE" and so after a while i got other plants and started naming them and hugging them so yeah i think its just because as we take care of them we see them grow and so it makes us proud and we're happy they're healthy
I think a big part of plant parenthood is the sense of continuity, responsibility, and achievement. Assuming you keep your plants alive, it means you succeeded in keeping a delicate living thing alive. You did this by staying responsible with watering and other care needs, and you know every time you need to water your plant that it is there. It sort of grounds you into a routine and gives you something to look forward to that also takes some amount of effort, which makes it an investment that you care about
I worked on a farm for a few years, you sort of get a relationship with the land like this. You're proud of it when you look out and see the newly planted rows, you worry for it when there's an early cold, you feel just joy when you see the yield (until you realize you'll be the one cutting all those spiny zucchini). It's very hard, sometimes painful work, especially on a small farm like the one that I worked on, but you sort of grow attached to the basin of life for which you have been caring.
For me the answer isn't so complicated, the reason people (at least me) are attached to their plants because as you start to take care of them and learn about their needs, you begin to realize that without you they will most likely die. So instead of seeing them as on object, you start to see them for what they actually are, life. It makes me happy watering my plants, changing their soil, repotting them, etc, knowing I'm doing this for their survival as well as their own "happiness". They may not feel emotions, but they are effected by stimulants, like touch, temperature, maybe sound, etc. Therefore I want them comfortable, whatever that means to a plant. Also seeing them in a different position in order to follow the sun from my window is another reminder that they are a life and I am their caregiver. Plus plants (depending on the number and type of plants) aren't as needy as an animal, and easier to adapt into your day-to-day life.
I must be cursed because of the, idk, 25 plants I have bought only 5 survived. That being said, I get the appeal. It feels good to care about something- to take care of it and see it THRIVE. I get really upset when my plants die. Not as much as I would over a pet of course, but it still feels like I failed this living thing. Plants are wonderful. They clean our air, bring life indoors, and connect us with nature and show us the change is always happening.
For me, the happiness I get seeing my plants doing well and producing new leaves is equivalent to when the family dog learned a new trick or is being really cute. Same when my plants are having a tough time, I feel a bit like I do when the dog is sick or sad :(
I love plants. I love seeing their progress as they grow and develop. I started out with a Venus flytrap... That ended badly but I did get much better over time. Now I'm growing much different plants.
my dad only does houseplants that provide product. he has a little herb garden on the kitchen windowsill and a mushroom growing setup in the back room.
My mental health is VASTLY improved during winter months when I have houseplants hanging around. Especially after they spend the summer growing and are all happy and strong
I have only named one of my plants and it was only after 1.5 years into it's life because my mother in law asked what's it's name is. It's name is Vida because this avocado is determined to live, it's been through a lot, including my children ripping off all it's leaves. She deserves a name, as did the spider that made her home adorning Vida's thin trunk. She really did a number on the fruit flies. We miss her. RIP Lacy.
taking care of my plants forces me to look after myself too. i cant stay in bed cause i need to check on them. im watering them? may as well drink some water myself too. putting your hands in soil and the pride you feel from a living thing growing is incredible. i have over 60 plants now (a lot of them share pots). definitely recommend! i started slow, with only one for a long time, and then slowly bought more. i buy a plant every 3 weeks or so now, usually ones im on the lookout for, as nz doesn't have the common ones america has as commonly. i recently achieved my dream of getting a gorgeous fiddle-leaf fig, and my monsteras (i have two!) are a year old and already big and gorgeous. ive been growing basil and lavender indoors too, they smell incredible!
I am very emotionally attached to my basil and aloe plant. There was a point for several weeks after bringing home my aloe where my partner saw me sleepwalk out of our room and over to my new aloe and I just stood there and stared at it for a few minutes before turning around and going back into our room.
My recommendation as a first plant: Spider plant: In my experience, those things will survive just about anything. I went on vacation for 5 weeks with nobody to care for it, and when I can back it was just fine. My cat is constantly chewing on it and it looks like it should be dead, but it still grows like there's nothing wrong. I randomly water it occasionally, and it never looks dehydrated. It sits in a dark corner, but it doesn't look pale.

I guess you'll need a follow-up video on how you feel about your plants. I have over 200 plants in my care. Honestly, it's a rush when you get a new one. Similar to 'gotta catch'em all' but also I love watching them grow and thrive. Getting a new leaf is THE BEST. my favorite thing is after watering them, it smells amazing. Like how it smells after a rain in the spring. Not all of my plants have made it, and yeah that sucks but it's a challenge that doesn't exactly have alot of risk to it. Except of course when you spend hundreds of dollars on a single plant and that plant just so happens to be variegated so it cant have alot of sun (cause it will scorch the leaves) but it wants a bunch of sun so it can grow well. It's a balancing act. That's a big part of having them.
That third plant looks like a Philodendron Birkin. I love my plants, they give me something I can fuss over on plant care days but then I can also just let them be and step back and not feel overwhelmed by having to preform once or twice daily tasks like with animals.
idk how you feel about BTS, but this video really reminded me of namjoon from BTS since he's a well known nature lover/plant dad. he said on their show "in the soop" that when he sees his plant blossom several times a year, he feels proud/feels like saying "you've worked so hard", and that feeling is amplified because he's had the plant for so long. so i just thought that might also offer some insight lmao. if your plant gives you something (fruit, beauty because of it blossoming, a noticeable mood improvement, etc.) i think you'll probably feel more attached to it/form a real bond with it
For me it all started in university - our teacher told each of us to bring 1 plant, leave it in our classroom and care for it. The point was to improve our attendance and surely as you might guess a lot of people brought cactuses or even small fake plastic plants. But I received my plant as a cutting of an euphorbia from my mom and felt incredible responsibility to keep it alive. This would make any plant owner laugh though, bcs euphorbia is one of those plants that gives no f*ck about anything. So in a year the cutting became a big bushy bright plant and I felt sooo happy that I preserved and cared for a living being, I felt so satisfied and joyful that I started collecting house plants and became pretty much addicted to them xD I wish I could show a picture, but my euphorbia trigona is around 2 meters high now.
You do form a psychological bond if sharing living space with them. Afterall, you are seeing to all of their needs regularly, whatever they may be (watering, misting, feeding, lighting, pruning, nursing, etc). It becomes part of your regular routine and caring for anything dependent, be it another human, a pet, or even a plant, its health and happiness invariably become a priority for you for as long as you two co-exist. Its natural for humans to become attached with whatever they are in a relationship with.
I think one of the main reasons that I love my plant so much is because it forces me to let sunlight into my room because I am emotionally attached to it and if it dies i will die also lol but i now feel healthier because my room is always sunny and im just generally in a better and more sunny mood :) also it makes me drink water because i always make myself drink water when i water it
I got my first plant - an aloe! - 2-ish years ago and I named it Little Dude. Also, an onion I bought at the store a few months ago started sprouting so I put it in some actual soil and named it Hubert. I’m kind of wanting to get an herb next bc I like having useful plants lol.
I found this video very interesting. I myself do treat houseplants as pets. And I rescue and collect alot of plants to grow. I even feel bad for plants and attach morals to them like if a weed is dug up I feel bad for it because it will probably die. Its just nice to have something to care for and look after and it's nice to have plants at home. Although Ill admit I don't name my plants 😭
carnivorous plants are great too!! most flytraps come in little plastic cups, you just have to refill the water when it gets low. care is really just refill cup, remove black heads, bring inside for winter.
I think the main fun in having plants, is first struggling to keep them alive, only to then suddenly see them grow when you've changed a few things in your plant routine. For me, that gave a craving for having my plants grow as large and healthy as they can be.
Plants are fun, but it's carnivorous plants that I'd get really attached to. Feeding them just sounds fun, and the easier ones to take care of even move! A Venus fly trap is a must for my future apartment.
The only time I've named a plant was when I owned an inchplant, a vining succulent with purple-striped leaves. Since its traditional name is "Wandering Jew", I named it "Samuel Goldberg", after a character from Mussorgsky's "Pictures in an Exhibition". My roommates kept knocking it off the counter but I would repot it each time, and it would keep rerooting. And I have never loved a plant more than that one.
well in my opinion the answer is pretty clear, you take care of it, you see it grow and as a result of that you care for it, that it doesn't die and so on
I think my attachment to my own plant is the literal journey. I’ve had it for years and I’ve spent those years trying to keep it alive, trial and error, with many many mistakes. Too little light. Too much light. Not enough water. Too much water. Oh no now it has no more roots. That last problem is the most recent. But research and help from my family led it to actually be rooted, and seems to be thriving! But we’ve still got a ways to go, me and my plant. I’m pretty sure aloe plants are supposed to be bigger than six inches. So yeah. Can’t wait to see where this journey keeps going. And that’s why I’m attached to my plant
I love bird of paradise I have like 3 of them, their flowers are really pretty. We had one time where two flowers popped out of the same stock together it was interesting, twin flowers. I also have an Aloe near my computer I have a little lamp for her, it keeps her alive. We have some orchids on our microwave, they love to flower, really big pretty flowers. Another one that is kinda fun is a Christmas cactus they bloom near Christmas time super fun. Happy you became a plant parent, hope your kids do well. Good luck, hope they don't die.
i have Augustus who i got 4 my birth in 2020 and he was my break in and he has SO MUCH GROWTH!! I do not know what he is or how much to water him but hes the round leafed one you see like twice in the video that the plant lady has
So we planted a garden and the first thing I did was name the bean stalk jack and then talk to him and tell him not to grow the weird way he wanted to because it was silly. Jack was technically 4 green bean stalks but it's really hard to tell them apart when they are 3meters tall, and tangled.
thank you, this reminded me to water my plants! I am not the best plant parent. also if anyone reading this is like me an often forgets to water plants, I would suggest getting some water beads or "orbeez" they suck up water and expand, and then slowly let the water back out after a while. you can just set a lot of the expanded ones on the plants soil and they will kinda water it :]
