I agree with you completely. People have been doing these activities/things forever, however, maybe it has more to do with the recrudescence of these activities.
Hehe, and then 24 becomes 64, and then 94... Until you become like me with more than a 100 plants in the same room. Not mentioning the rest of the house XD Good luck and happy growing!
Boomers are so meticulous about their pristine yards. Most millennials don’t have very abundant outdoor living space, let alone yards, so we have houseplants 🙃
Good point! Gen X here, but I live in an apartment and don't even dream of having a house. Working on a yard seems more like a nightmare.:p We have windows to the south and a balcony, so I have currently 5 herbs, a few succulents and two other plants. It would be nice to plant a few zuccinis on the balcony (in a planter box of course), and I have also other plant ideas yet to be realized.
Jillian Johnson Not to mention, we would want to take our plants potted so we can them with us if our landlords decides to kick us out of our homes so they can raise the rent. 😬
This actually reminds me of Southern California in the 1970’s…I bought all the plants I could then in my early 20’s, and tried to convince my ex that we should open a shop. My favorite was my monstera. A about 7 years later, while working as an activities director at a skilled nursing facility, I put on a big luau for the patients and families, complete with authentic island dancers. I brought in some of my plants to add to the atmosphere. Sadly, someone swiped my monstera. I figured it was one of the staff and put up notices begging to get it back. I had that confirmed about a year later when someone told me who did it. I demanded my plant back, and their supervisor acted as if I were in the wrong. I did get it back, but it was a shadow of itself, and I couldn’t save it. I still feel sad for that plant. Now 76, I live in a one bedroom apartment with a little balcony on which I grow ornamental plants, lettuces and herbs. Inside I have fair light and have about 40 plants, to which I am always adding. I am propagating some and hope to supplement my income. I think a lot of older people who used to love their yards as well as their interior plants, but have downsized, are focused on their houseplants now. I am lucky to have a friend downstairs who shares my enthusiasm and we exchange cuttings.
Living in a concrete and confined space definitely make you want to grow plants, it is a way to open up the space and break the stiffness of the concrete
The love of indoor plants has gone in and out of fashion several times during my longish life. It's good to see them becoming fashionable again, but while a lot of these people will cut back on their indoor jungles when the fashion moves on, most of those who've been introduce to house plants now will probably keep some plants around for the rest of their lives, long after the current fashion subsides. Plants are just good to have around.
Yep. I became a plant enthusiast in my 20’s back in the early 1970’s. Begged my ex for us to open a plant store, but it wasn’t exciting to him. I have had as many houseplants as lighting could support in the various places I lived all my life. At age 76, I live in a one bedroom with balcony and fair lighting, I have about 40 and am adding more. Even propagating in hopes of supplementing my income. I have always loved them, not as much as my cats and dogs, but quite a lot, and moved many around the country with me throughout the years.
Plants and gardening in general brings out the nurturing tendencies in all humans to care for other living things. Knowing that the endeavored activity will reward you with herbs, vegetables, flowers and fragrances is secondary to the satisfaction of a beautiful, thriving, healthy green plant to give you a sense of wellbeing. Its the reward of a job well done.
i have a cat and 69 plants wich i all care for snd tbh i love it. i often resque plants that are not cared well for and whenever i see them start to show signs of growing or recovery i almost cry.. and i get so excited when my plants show signs of growth like a new leaf! the whole thing just makes me happy because i can take care of my plants and my cag better than i can do for myself wich rlly reduces my stress
I know several war time and boomer generations that have a house full of plants. Plants may be getting more attention due to social media as Summer suggested, but all generations love plants and gardens and many more generations will enjoy this in the future.
I mean people in general like houseplants.... I really don’t think millennials in general have more of a inclination towards houseplants. Maybe because they have social media so it looks like they are the only ones doing it?
Uhm yes? Nobody said that only millennials like plants? But there is an increase of interest in our generation and the representation thereof in social media. That's undeniable.
Thanks New Yorker for the feature and the inclusion. For all of those who asked, you can find my RU-vid channel here: ru-vid.com ("Plant One On Me" playlist).
What is the title of the little book you're going though at 6:30? It looks like a great plant guide book! I'd love to get started with learning more about plants! Thanks!
My mom always had plants growing up, inside, outside and anywhere she could put them. The fact that she was soo good at keeping them alive and I wasn’t, and she’d tease me about it made me learn more about plants to keep them alive. So I guess I became a plant lady out of spite 🤷🏻♀️
At least her air is likely clean!! A lot of plants help with cleaning out VOC’s, other environmental toxins. I so appreciate these people doing this vs showing off a bunch of other materialistic crap! Yay plants and clean air!
Unfortunately it's a myth that plants purify the air... They do, but one would need thousands of plants growing in the most optimal conditions to be able to see any change in voc levels, which is expensive and impractical. Better off investing in an air purifier for that purpose. Plants are there to sooth the soul, the eyes. They can't act as an air filter.
@@BikePretty Well, since the conversation is about houseplants, I would say indoor. I don't garden these days. Not sure what fabric softeners or laundry have anything to do with this conversation.
KRLEEQ I’m guessing that whenever there’s a trend it’s always because of millennials. “Millennials are been obsessed with ___” “millennials can’t stop eating avocados” “millennials are adopting dogs instead of having kids” “millennials are renting instead of buying”
Yesenia Martinez Ahhh I see what you mean, no I agree it’s a bit over the top how things become trendy and suddenly millennials think it’s revolutionary. I’m just like, ok 👍 great you like avocados on bread how groundbreaking. It’s definitely a “hey look at me I’m jumping on this trend, I’m cool now huh!” But really I feel as though... who cares just live your life.
I was raised in a big yard with lot of threes and plants. So, having plants reminds me all the love and dedication my grandma had with her plants. It's also a good way of introducing peeps to the conscience of taking care of nature and environment, and how is important to bring more green [and other colors plants could have] to the grey.
Hey New Yorker, this is awesome! You should link the RU-vidrs shown here, it’d probably mean a lot to them! I spotted Harli G & The Plant Daddy and Kaylee Ellen’s Insta. Summer Rayne’s channel is amazing!! 🌱🌱
Pam Ela, maybe you should watch the video before you start to make such a statement? The journalists have done their job and given credits for the used footage at the end of the video. With other words, they have been professional.
I'm a tail-end boomer and I love plants -- but I choose to raise only a few large specimens of favorite plants. When plants get too large for my space, I divide them and give away part. One thing I've noticed through the years: you can tell who your good friends are when you need someone to take care of plants while you're on a trip.
Im glad you chose to interview her because she doesn't have that look or tone that she's literally crazy or obsessed. She seems more like an avid hobbyist.
So...tons of people have always loved plants. Social media gives much more support and provides a sense of connection to plant lovers that is on another level compared with earlier generations.
Tbh it’s super satisfying and not even super expensive to do. Beginner plants like pothos and spider plants are easy to propagate, which feels awesome to do when you successfully propagate them. And soon you’ll have a dozen of them! Super cool.
@@aahpuuh I know right! Last year my mom was in the hospital and I tried sending prayers and they wouldn't allow those either. Doesn't security have anything better to do?
I completely misunderstood your statement. I was thinking "Well, I do have a bromeliad that needs a medical intervention. Where are these plant hospitals?"
LOL. They can like plants for totally different reasons. That's how demographic analysis works: It zeros in on a specific population and explores their specific motivations.
Good for you Summer getting on the New Yorker!! For me as a plant lover, it’s weird meeting others. It feels like two unicorns meeting the jungle. But it’s great the hobby is growing
I’m 28 and this is my second year gardening I love it. I know it’s different than indoor planting but planting seeds outside and watching them grow into fruit or vegetables you can eat is so relaxing
Wonderful. Just simply wonderful. As a lifetime obsessed gardener, I am so happy to see younger people embracing the green world. Greed kills; Green heals.
It’s not necessarily a millennial thing- it’s just become a popular thing again. My mom and her friends grew multiple plants in their homes in the 80’s and 90’s. I think it’s a great thing that people are showing love to plants again! I’m thinking about getting some of my own. It looks so refreshing and peaceful.
@@4thecultureco It's pretty self explanatory, is it not? His channel was listed in the video. They did give him credit, so I was asking if you were bringing attention to him specifically because he's cute. Or did I miss something else?
Dude at 2:23 smelling the plant made me LOL. I’ve been starting my own indoor plant obsession and it’s because I find it therapeutic..something I can be proud about...they’re great for our air...and they’re living things inside my house, idk they’re just cool and nice to look at. I’ve got about 11 so far, and they’re all pretty healthy and each are different.
I seriously thought I was the only one who hoarded plants like this. I’ve described myself as being like a cat lady, but with plants. Also whenever someone asks me if I have any pets I say, “Do plants count?”
Millennials keep plants... inside? That's insane! Soon it will be like "millennials are eating peanut butter on toast! wow!" (okay I'm sorry I seriously love this girl but I'd really like to see adults/seniors get some recognition! good video though!)
I’m a gen zer who works at two plant shops and I have over 100 plants in my tiny apartment I just think they are so amazing all the different kinds of foliage amaze me I love caring for them and watching them grow (I’m also autistic they’re my special interest)
I've been in plant care and a lover of plants most of my 68 years. Love your advice and Common sense on plants and care. I live in Hawaii now and it's a plant lady's dream. But respectful of the land 🌴💖💖🌈🌈 lucky and grateful
in case you missed it, it's because a) plants are one of the only things we feel in control of in our lives; b) we can't afford larger living spaces with actual outdoor space. oops
My grandpa have always loved plants. He has a beautiful garden and inspired me since I was little to take care of plants. I don’t think is a millennial thing.
I got into plants via.. Seeing succulents on social media. I was so taken aback by how strange some of them were. I never knew plants could look like that, let alone plants you could grow yourself. I had never thought plants could look so strange and it kinda reminded me of when I was younger how my mom had a few plants here and there.. And she was into plants cus her family gardened for a lot of their food back in the day.. Me though part of my reason was also because it was a good excuse to keep my window open cus I had this habit of keeping the blinds closed 24/7. And I never really put effort into decorating my room. I got my first plant (echeveria ramillette) which died in a week (look where I'm at you wouldnt expect a frost advisory and that year we had one...) . My mom picked out a small mammillaria of sorts and my niece picked out a tiny lil graptoesdum vera Higgins. Those two survived. My mom felt bad and got me a lil arrangement.. Then I wanted more plants. Its a year later and I have like 30 flower pots. And I asked someone to keep an eye out for me today for this one special Haworthia that Walmart has had in stock on occasion. 😂
I bought two indoor plants at the local hardware store that were half dying in the clearance section. I wanted nothing more than to save them and watch them flourish so I took a chance and bought them. I don’t know why it took me this long to put plants in my apartment but now I want more. They have such a calming effect and my family really enjoys them!
I started getting into plants because of my mom a couple years ago. Since then, I became a florist in a grocery store :D You can imagine how many clippings I have lol...
there were so many funny parts about this video. my favourites were the final shot of her pretending to be asleep even though there was a whole camera crew in her house, and "ever sinced we opened, we have sensed and increase in people coming in"
I had plants all my life, probably because I live in a house with a pretty big garden. I always was amazed with the way plants grow. Like how a seed can grow into a flower. I have so many plants in my house right now, but also so many outside. I love the idea of having your own little jungle.
5:34 - "If you know someone who is sick in the hospital, bring them some plants..." It’s against hospital etiquette for a guest to bring fresh flowers, food, plants or fruits to a patient without asking first. “Infection control is crucial for patients who are very sick and do not have a strong immune system, such as burn victims, cancer or chemo patients,” explains Lee. “Fresh flowers, plants and fruits can carry fungal spores that can infect sick patients. Call the unit ahead of time to see what is appropriate to bring.” - www.rd.com/health/healthcare/hospital-etiquette/
Right? I want to check out the chancel of the main woman they featured and I have no idea what her or her channels name is. Like even if they just could put a name in the bottom left corner in the video....?!
At the end when she slept with a plant lol I just got into plants and flowers this year and have 3 plants right now and 2 succulents and I absolutely love taking care of them it really is a special hobby.
Speaking of plants. I went to a fleamarket this weekend & got 2 medium size snake plants & some other huuuge (excuse me idk what kind of plant it is) palm tree leaf plant all for $15!! Dirt cheap. I’m in love!! Going back this weekend to get even more haha
I've been orchid obsessed for about 8 years and I'm just now starting to get into other kinds of plants. I don't do it for social media, but watching other people with their plants does fuel my interest.
