It does work! When I started studying maths, I came from the typical 'I'm not a maths person' mindset. Finally, something in me switched, and I thought, 'No, I WILL become a maths person!' So, every day, I psych myself up and hype myself up to this mindset of 'I can understand even the most complex maths problems and concepts!' Kind of like a self-fulfilling prophecy. That hype makes me determined, and I study probably 5 hours a day on average. And it works! I have a 97% in my maths courses! Will I one day hit a ceiling? Perhaps... but until then, I will keep hyping myself up and believing in myself!

For Christmas, I asked my family to buy me only math books from your video on becoming a wizard and some others I found online. I've always hated structured classes, but I love thinking and researching math and science on my own. So those books are gonna serve as a test for if I'm actually thinking mathematically or just stroking my ego this whole time haha. It's reassuring to see this video because I have really unrealistic goals in multiple fields I have no formal education in. I'm also young enough that I haven't suffered any big failures, so in all likelihood, I'm just arrogant. It'll be fun to try though :)

My unrealistic goal is to study calculus 3, ODE, and PDE even though the highest math required for my computer science degree is calculus 2 and linear algebra. That’s because I want to specialize in computer speech recognition, which requires me to be able to do a Fourier transform, which needs PDE.
@Blackiris_
@Blackiris_ 7 месяцев назад
I'm sure the fourier transform is ubiquitous in PDEs but it's actually more of a harmonic analysis thing than PDE.

Ah I thought speech recognition is at the point it no longer needs anymore work on it, of course I could be wrong I was reading about such in SciAm in the 80's and things have vastly improved from that point of time.

My math education was, and still, filled with gaps. Like many of us here, I started picking math back up thanks to this channel. I've had to start with college algebra on Kahn Academy to give some sense of where I'm at. That said, I'm a programmer and am currently building a speech recognition system without any libraries except the C++ standard library so that I can more deeply understand the concepts. It took about 3 days, but I was able to develop an intuition around the contiuous fourier transform, and eventually, the fast fourier transform well enough to go and implement it myself. So don't make the mistake of thinking you have to understand advanced mathematics to understand the fourier transform, especially not if you have some programming intuition to rely on.

I absolutely agree with this take. Since I was in high school I said I wanted to be a scientist. It took longer than most people but I am now at PhD candidacy😊 now I want to become a structural biologist which is waaaay unrealistic since I don’t have strong calculus but I am starting to polish my calculus to get as close as I can. There is no way we ever have anything figured out. Even Nobel price winners have said how they struggled for such a long time thinking they would never be able to be successful in their careers. Thank you for making me feel a bit better about this weird obsession about unrealistic goals🤣

I was at a pub in Boston one night drinking by myself instead of socializing again and pondering my direction. I just turned 21 and could not get a fafsa college loan so it seemed like a course here and there would have to do. I was talking to the bartender about goals and what not when I noticed a flyer for a speed math course. It said something like 'Start with the basics - All the way up to Algebra - Find where you need to focus'. I told the bartender I figured it out! I'm going to solve all the math! I did not drink often but I was ready to be sober if needed. Long story short I did not solve all the math hahaha. But I did find new confidence in things I never knew I could achieve even if it was a short lived victory. I could say fraction conversions were what I needed to learn so I printed out fraction to decimal study cards and taped them to my desk so I saw them every day.

I'm not a mathematician, but I understand the way the message is conveyed and its content. It is very important, regardless of what you do for a living, to seek people who simply resonate with you internally. Often, the patterns are similar, but in the end, the result is what matters. Great job. I really appreciate your contribution. Best regards.

this video is digital gold. I can't believe I was so normal all along. i made several of the mistakes that you mentioned by just 1:40 and I was under the impression I am facing a unique challenge in life. So I never imagined I can share my problems with anyone and seek help. I never thorough what I was feeling can be felt by someone else so I didn't know how to convey what I felt and get an opinion from someone who has been in my shoes. thinking you have it figured and having the stubbornness to pull through every aspect of it in every aspect of life has screwed me spectacularly. I'm just a kid. I say this as a 21 year old. I tried to be an adult too soon, now I have my share of "childhood" to life. Like if you put on your shoes before your socks, you gonna have to remove your shoes (lost progress) put your socks on and only then put your shoes on again. I need to think like a child again to then mature, organically.

00:57 🚧 Embrace the perspective that plans may change, and it's better not to be overly attached to a rigid, fixed path in life. 01:38 🤐 Avoid putting unnecessary restrictions on yourself by thinking you have it all figured out; staying fluid in life allows for adaptability and growth. 02:50 🌍 Life often takes unexpected turns, and plans may lead you somewhere different; be open to change and new opportunities. 03:18 🎯 Set a big, almost unrealistic goal to provide motivation and direction in life; it serves as a driving force during challenges and uncertainties. 04:28 🌟 Luck comes through hard work; having a big goal ensures you're striving for something significant, contributing to a fulfilling life. 05:52 📝 Write down your big life goals to give them clarity; focus on the details through research and daily efforts to achieve those goals. 06:59 💪 Work towards unrealistic goals; aiming high increases the likelihood of achieving remarkable things and pushing personal boundaries. 08:07 🤔 It's okay not to have everything figured out; having unrealistic goals is a positive and motivating aspect of personal growth and achievement.

Just throwing this out there in case it's useful for anyone. As someone who has often dreamed big but felt stuck in place, I've found this book informative: How We Change: (And Ten Reasons Why We Don't) - Ross Ellenhorn. Maybe I didn't feel connected to every reason or conclusion, but it was more useful than trying to tweak my strategy such as with "Atomic Habits." If there's something fundamental stopping you, it's nice to be able to get at that better.

Hello, I completely agree with your point. Our lives got a meaning and it is our job to define it. Without a goal, we are basically lost in this world. Nothing is easy in life and there are only two options, whether we struggle until we achieve our goals or struggle with regrets about missing our opportunity to succeed. I know I may sound dramatic but it’s factual. Also, I really appreciate the effort you put into these videos because it inspires me and I’m sure that it inspires many others. Thank you.

I went from wanting to be a philosopher to physicist to mathematician to math teacher to data scientist to psychologist... now learning more about engineering and psychiatry. Hoping to apply data science and IoT to help make mental healthcare more scientific. I'm mid 30's and somehow will make it all work. Agree with this video! Also need to crack open some more stats, abstract algebra, and analysis books someday.

I have a way of classifying thoughts into three categories. The three categories pertain to our attachment and investment in the outcome (emotionally). +1 is very attached. 0 is confident and partly attached (basically neutral). -1 is completely unattached. The corresponding factors that being more attached to the thought being a fact and relevant versus not being attached are these: The more invested, the more suffering, and the more likely it is to be false, and limiting. It's most accurate to say that we don't know, and that's okay. I don't have unrealistic goals, I have daily habits that I improve to take me great distances one step at a time. Easy.

Believing you have it all figured out only hinders your learning experience. You've accepted that you figured it all out, and that there is nothing else to figure out for yourself. You had to learn to get to this belief, and believing you have it all figured out only shows how much there is left for you to learn.

It is true that we can and will never know everything, but sometimes you need to be bold enough to take decisions that will affect people. If you don't take such decisions it could end up even worse for those people. This is true from parenting to world leadership.

When I was a young student, I began the study of mathematics, but to structure the concepts in a solid way I chose Bourbaki's treatise popular in France in the community of mathematicians in France since the 60s

I noticed that one of the big reasons I couldn't get motivated was that my goals were too "realistic", full of mediocre compromises, with the main goal of living comfortably. The brain just doesn't want to trade current comfort for only future comfort. Ambition justifies all pain and effort; lack of ambition crushes the soul. Yukio Mishima said something like "the strange things about humans is that we can only be happy when we give our 100% to something beyond ourselves".

Excellent video. I am in the machine learning / AI field that I sort of fell into from my background in applied math and computational neuroscience. My early life was like a pinball. I was into psychology and neuroscience. Things like sleep and dreams. Soon realized soft science will not lead to a real career and went into applied math and physics and started all over again. Then graduate school was both math and computational neuroscience from the engineering department. I realized I had to retool and found the early field of neural networks was my life calling. Point is it was a lot of mistakes. I always like Oppenheimer's famous quote (not about becoming death) of the 'man who takes 10 years to correct his mistakes is quite a man'. Life is a bumpy ride. It is full of mistakes and you survive by getting up when you get knocked down.

Exactly what kind of AI work are you doing/are interested in? I am going to start college soon as a computer science major, and if I decide against seeking an industry software engineer position, I am kind of interested in the new fields emerging from combining computer science and/or engineering with neuroscience. If I had to follow his advice and set a difficult, perhaps impossible goal, I'd want to make huge advances in dream technology. I'm talking shit that someone online would read a headline about and start fearing an upcoming sleep dystopia. Like exporting dream mp4s or shoving advertisements in our dreams. Given your interests and fields of study you talked about in your comment, have you learned anything about fields like this in your career?
