Good thing found this...its also great that scooters are common here in the philippines and choices for performance variators for the scooters vary, but for the vespa's in general we have malosi, polini and 12S (locally made variator) which really gives torque that would result in accelaration that we would need in order to overtake someone ❤

Thank you for all your videos. I recently bought a Vespa 50 2 stroke and 2 stroke to have a play with. I’ve learnt so much from your videos. sounds like I can get quite a bit of performance improvement from the two stroke, although for the four stroke, perhaps the only thing I can do is add a performance variator?

The motor on my Vitacci Spark 150cc has plenty of power but the top speed is terrible along with the gas savings, I've only had this scooter for 6 months. Your video's are wonderful, things i will be trying out. More people need to own 150cc scooters imo. Also the sound in this video is very low, I have mine turned up on software and hardware.

Hi ACP, thanks for coming onboard👍 Nice looking scooter, it reminds me of the Scoots in Thailand. You should try the variator and also if it runs with a carby system check the main jet it maybe running richer than needed. Also a gear kit increases the top speed and works very well on the 125-150cc. The voice can be annoying so you are lucky with the low volume😂😂😂😂 all the best.

Thanks for uploading your videos are always great to watch. What’s your thoughts on performance reeds? Is it best to go with standard.
@scooterstreetau
@scooterstreetau 3 года назад
A pleasure, thank you. We found the performance reed is one of the parts that is required. The standard reed valve is usually smaller and suited to a smaller flow and requirement for the standard cylinder/carby/air set up. SO why upgrade the other parts to have run into a bottle neck.🤔 Do it if the other parts have been upgraded. The reed petals are always a part to check at the service interval.

Thanks Brad for the in depth explanation. I'm looking at Malossi upgrades for a Vespa Sprint 150cc. It should be the 2000 kit. I'm told by the shop that I gotta choose within acceleration or top speed, that I can't have em both ways. Yet, the internet testifies that I will get improvements in both. With casual understanding of gear ratios, if i do get improvements in both, where's the top speed coming from? Does the kit have an oversize variator, therefore i get a bit more top speed?
@scooterstreetau
@scooterstreetau Год назад
Thank you✌The ramp plate angle and the rollers is where the advantage will come from, I would lean towards the opinion of the shop. How much top speed are you desiring? If you want lots of top speed you have the wrong bike. Scooter are about acceleration and manoeuvrability in traffic. Luckily for you the Vespa looks really cool too, Win win. The Variator does work in these models. We have a video on this.

Why don't manufacturers put performance variators on scooters from the factory? Why send them out with sub-standard variators? Surely they know about performance variators - couldn't they just copy them? Thumbs upped.
@scooterstreetau
@scooterstreetau 3 года назад
Yes good question and asked many times. Fitting the basic option variator from factory is cheaper and also stays within the 50cc category restrictions. Most 50cc scooters are made to suit counties which have strict speed and power restrictions which they deem safer for first Licence riders. Where I am from the speed is restricted to 55KPH. So the manufacturers make the scooter to fit within the guides lines of the Regulator/Government.

@scooterstreetau
@scooterstreetau 3 года назад
Thanks Duke, The Malossi weights are a different size to the factory so the answer is no.. You can approach it this way, start with the Malossi rollers that are provided in the Variator kit. Ride and trial these so you get a good feel of how the engine performs and then head back to the workshop. Now you can start to change the roller weights. With a test ride after each change you will then have a starting point to compare if the ride is better than the original set in the Variator, or are more changes required. I hope this makes sense.

@scooterstreetau
@scooterstreetau 2 года назад
If the current belt is in the lowest possible gear then a different dimension belt will make no difference. Wider belt will not get to the lowest gear and the scooter will be very slow to accelerate. The answer for hill approach is in the rollers and the clutch sync. The variator must move to a lower gear when the rev drops and this is doe in the rear pulley working with the correct roller weight. The variator hole (Shaft or Hub) is set by the crankshaft dimension. Variator and clutch, No not all the same.

My scooter is a China 150cc made by Dongfang. I guess I'm gonna have a problem finding parts/mods that improve the bike huh cus it's not a popular name brand? The company says the bike has a "Speed Limiter" but I suspect it may have many different types of restrictions from air intake restrictions, CDI, stock exhaust needle position etc. I want to find and remove or bypass all I can before I spend a lot on parts. I have no clue if I'll be able to do that or find them all.
@scooterstreetau
@scooterstreetau 3 года назад
There are many compatible parts for the Chinese scooters. The engine number may give an idea of the engine type. It could be GY6 or later model. Usually the Chinese scooters are copied from an already existing make so do some reasearch and you will find some parts, start with the GY6 engine.. I see it has a 157QMJ engine which is GY6-150cc😁
@DivergentDroid
@DivergentDroid 3 года назад
@@scooterstreetau Yep.. first thing I did when I got the bike was check the stamped tag under the CVT to make sure it was a real 157QMJ. I was afraid the Chinese scooter company would rip me off cus it had a lot of bad reviews. I was lucky.. bike was un damaged and had all the extra parts I needed to assemble. I'm glad the bike runs well because $969.00 (1,184 with shipping) was all I could afford. My plan is to mod it over the next year and get it to a solid 70 mph if possible. There is even a 171cc big bore kit I can get for 140 dollars that does not require boring the cylinder.

Hi, I have a question for you, I have Piaggio NRG Power LC year 2008, on it I have Malossi Sport 70cc cylinder with Leo Vince TT exhaust, I have a stock variator with rollers that came with exhaust they are 4.8 grams, rare pulley is totaly stock just with blue clutch springs that make scooter to go at 5000rpm, belt is also stock piaggio belt, scooter goes 100km/h, rpms are around 10 700rpm, I think this is quite high because kit has peak power at 9000rpm and exhaust peak power is at 8500rpm, I dont know if my belt goes all the way up but should I put roller weights that are heavier lets say 5.5g to decrease the rpm and gain more km/h. Carb is dellorto 17.5 stock with 75 main jet and stock filter, everything, else is stock. What elese should I do to scooter in your oppinion, what is missing.Thank you !
@scooterstreetau
@scooterstreetau 2 года назад
100kms is great, you should be happy with that effort. There is an opportunity to fit a higher class exhaust. Try heavier rollers 6.2. and lower as required. Pen mark the variator face to confirm the final belt position. Remove snorkel from Air box if it is still present, and jet up..

if im using heavy roller just for fuel efficiency. do i need to use performance variator as well? im just mildly cruising between 80kmh-100kmh
@scooterstreetau
@scooterstreetau 2 года назад
No. the variator will allow finer tuning and depending on the scooter model give more acceleration. Heavier rollers can make the engine work harder to achieve cruising speed so I am not sure about economy.?.? Consider allowing the engine to rev lower while achieving the cruising speed with smallest effort. A big power push from the start sucks the fuel.

Fit only the variator assembly and the shaft and use the rollers with the same roller weight as the original variator. Try 3 of the 8.5gram (25gram) rollers just for a quick test, this may show you that you need lighter rollers, if it responds better then use the correct weight for all 6 rollers which may be 4.5 or there abouts.

@scooterstreetau

The variator difference in the Speedfight 100cc with and without Kat, is the total length of the parts combined when installed. No Kat is Longer.. If you have a look at the Fixed Cover n the Malossi variator you will see the difference immediately, the no Kat is the deeper/higher cover.

Hi I have a Piaggio zip with only 3k miles. Completely standard other then sports pipe. When I bought it I noticed the side casing was hot to the touch after short rides. I took the casing off and the belt had been rubbing bad and there was bits of rubber all over the casing. I’ve replaced the belt and cleaned everything. Checked the clutch is moving free and it’s still getting hot. Any ideas?
@scooterstreetau
@scooterstreetau 2 года назад
It should be hot in the transmission case as there is friction involved, it is the job for the cooling fan on the front pulley to kep the air regulated, is the cooling fan in good order? Also the belt should not be rubbing.
@williamhaskellhaskell3162
@williamhaskellhaskell3162 Год назад
Does the cooling fan pull in outside air or just circulate air? And or is outside air forced in the case. Or does the rear vent pull a vac on case air? As the bike moves forward?

You could leave it alone. The Piaggio variator is much better than a Yamaha one. But it's still made to a price point. They are made as cheaply as possible. Fitting a better quality part is never a bad thing. It's definitely smoother with a performance version. And holds the revs more consistently.
