Thank you Erin!! Finally somebody recognizes how homogenized capsule wardrobes have become. You can be a minimalist and still have color in your wardrobe. It is frustrating to watch these videos and find that a capsule wardrobe means neutral colors, a blazer, and a British accent. Not that I have anything against any of those things, but that's not all there is!! That's like only eating vanilla ice cream. Also, it completely ignores where you live, what kind of lifestyle you have, and personal aesthetic (what actually looks good on you). A 20 year old surf instructor from Hawaii is going to have a totally different capsule wardrobe from a 50 year old investment banker from New York city. Personally, I would love to see someone do a color challenge capsule wardrobe, with NO white, cream, black, grey, or navy (except for maybe shoes). That would be really interesting, and a total different take on capsule wardrobe. I bet Karenbritchick would rock this challenge!

Yes, thank you! I fell for the whole “capsule wardrobe = black/white/grey” thing early on, then wondered why I always felt so down about my closet! Over the past year, I’ve transitioned into a completely different style. I still have a small capsule, but I discovered that my style is far more colorful and vintage than I originally thought. My most worn piece is a mustard yellow Victorian inspired linen midi dress, and I only own one black item (overalls 😂). The idea that brighter colors or patterns can’t be versatile is such a myth. My wardrobe is now a handful of beautiful linen dresses that I wear on repeat, warm toned knitwear, a few basics, and dainty patterns. And here’s the thing - yes, some people do notice that I repeat items fairly often, but it’s never a negative thing. Instead they tell me again how much they love that item I’m wearing. It’s an amazing thing to have a signature style that people recognize and say, “oh, that’s so you!” I think that capsule wardrobes enable us to find that signature style 😊😊❤️

Ah yes! I love everything you've said! It's so true, and as long as you feel good in it all that's what matters. I think repeating / rewearing your clothes is such a good thing and I hate how society has conditioned us that we shouldn't. I think that's starting to change though which is so good ❤️

This is so true. I love the neutral thing. But, I have a friend who loves designer clothing. She has a small but elegant high end wardrobe that includes some colors and standout prints. I do notice she wears the same pieces time and again. However, my thought (and everyone who knows her) is WOW! She always looks impeccable and her style is so enviable because it "so her" as you mentioned above. xoxo

I’ve started straying away from the traditional capsule wardrobe “look” because it started getting sterile and bland for me lol. Don’t get me wrong, learning about capsules has been an absolute game changer in terms of intentional wardrobe planning & curation. I still love my white button downs and blue jeans. But at the end of the day, capsules are just a tool to help introduce & guide you when it comes to personal style & clothes if you’re uncertain about where to start. After you’ve learned the basics, it should be the launching pad to further hone in on your aesthetic imo. Patricia from A Small Wardrobe actually talks about this topic a bit! She has one video about “Minimalist Wardrobe Archetypes.”

Great message. I hate wearing anything restrictive, so blazers and button-downs are really not my thing. If I put them in a minimalist wardrobe, they will be wasted space. I hate dresses and most skirts because I never feel like myself when wearing them. Again, not a basic for me. Just ignore silly people's silly comments about what you can and can't have in your minimalist or capsule wardrobe. Neutrals are a jumping off point, not a destination.

Well done... Brilliant video.. I am so sick of people who are critizing because they say "it doesn't fit the rules" of minimalism or a capsule wardrobe... It is rediculous...and shows they have not understand the concept of minimalism! Any true minimalist will say "minimalism is different for the everyone"... The principle is just reducing stuff to a level that "things" don't stress, exhaust and depress you".. So that you have just what you need to make you relaxed and happy and have time for what is important to you in your life!

I have been sort of using the idea of a capsule wardrobe as a way to not get bored with my clothes and to shop less... I pick a set of clothes that I am crazy about right now, and put away the others that I still like and wear, but just not so much this month (or for 2 -3 months). It doesn't have any set number of clothes nor a set color palette, and I freely exchange, add or remove items when I feel it's time to do that. That has honestly helped me shop less because I feel like I went shopping each time I open my cardboard box full of clothes. I have never owned a single white tee, nor do I like any of the items that the capsule wardrobe is "supposed to" have, yet I managed to create capsule-like wardrobes for years now. I tend to gravitate towards very saturated colors like red, teal and plum, and hate how I look in neutrals, so if I hadn't adapted what I love into my closet, I wouldn't have been able to do it. I would encourage anyone to experiment with their style and capsules if they haven't tried it yet.

I think the name "Capsule Wardrobe" can easily create the misunderstanding. I learn from Daria Andronescu about the Wonder Wardrobe method and find it pretty useful to create my own wardrobe with all the items that I love and wear all the time. So I suggest to change the name first. Leave the Capsule Wardrobe for someone who need a closet detox for a few months - like what I did 2 years ago. Basically, I lived with only basic pieces for months and finally realized what I truly need in my wardrobe for a cheerful life. Now my Wonder Wardrobe is full of ruffle blouses, jeans, double breasted blazers, colorful silk scarves & cover-up, sling back shoes... I still keep some basic white tees because they mix perfectly with jeans and a silk scarf or cover-up. But you know, it's my wardrobe and as long as it make me happy, it's fine. And so is yours.

I think a Wonder Wardrobe is an interesting idea to explore and you should definitely do a video about it. Basically, it's a capsule wardrobe full of interesting pieces & personality like mine and yours - but better because every pieces can mix & match to one another. The more interesting thing about clothes is that when we are conscious about ourselves, we can tame the most difficult pieces in the most unexpected way - like what I have done with the trench coat, palazzo pant and pleated skirt. I think you had experienced the same thing with some of your clothes. Why don't you share about it on your next video. It could be great.

I recall my old "color me beautiful"-book, that one had suggestions for the basic capsule in ones colors, and nowhere it said that everything should be black, gray or beige ... My basic color is blue, and everything I get should work with that, and I avoid black, it is a demanding color, looks awful when I am tired or sad.

So, my problem is that I've forgotten what my style is like. I used to dress colorfully, with fun patterns and shapes. Now it seems all I wear is black. I can't seem to find clothes that I feel comfortable and confident in. Maybe I should just focus on finding even one louder more fun item that suits me and build around that. That's so hard though.

As someone whose "staple" items were until recently a bright pink pencil skirt & matching metallic pink stilettos, I wholeheartedly agree! Another interesting dimension to throw into the grinder are kids! Barring the need for maternity and nursing pieces as an inevitable need to expand the ol' wardrobe, the eternal mantra of "invest in high quality pieces" deserves some thought, since a mom's wardrobe is just a magnet for sticky hands, vomit and marker streaks lol. In my pre-kid life I was blessed to be able to afford quality upper-mid-range pieces. No longer lol. To that end, beyond thrifting alone, I've given myself license to buy some new fast fashion pieces (because so much of life becomes second-hand and thrifted anyway), that feel great, but also ones where I know I'm not afraid to throw them in the wash on loop and won't be devastated when forever ruined by a marker. A $30 shirt ruined is a bit more bearable than a $120 shirt ruined.

I have always wondered why all youtubers or other peolple who talk about minimalism or capsule wardrobe wear always white-grey-camel-black clothes and i would never come to this idea that you can have capsule wardrobe only in these colors, this is absolute nonsenss. I think you can have super loud clothes in orange, pink and green, but if you love them and wear them constantly, this is the point! I personally don't have capsule wardrobe but I just thought, which are icest colors to me, which are pink, blue, grey, white and camel and I try to buy things in these colors so everything would match and already that has downsized my wardrobe, because everything goes together and then I don't need more and more things.

My work outfits are quite demanding, but I actually don’t wear them anywhere else. So I need another pieces for walks, Sundays, shopping and other non-work activity. Plus some lounge pieces. That makes my entire wardrobe non-capsule as a whole, but I feel like I do have a few sets of clothes for different occasions. And I love every single piece! :)

Thank you for this!!! I have watched so many capsule wardrobes and even maximalist all say you need a white shirt, a blazer and neutral staples. I never follow through with any of them because white washes me out, I don't like wearing it and would probably only get one or two wearing before it was stained. I love blazers but never wear them, they just don't fit my lifestyle. I love print tops in beautiful jewel tone colors, neutral pants are fine because they work with the tops. I don't need a lot of skirts and dresses because I just don't wear them often. If I had the recommended capsule wardrobe I would literally have nothing to wear. I garden, I paint, work with animals when I can and get my hands and clothes dirty. This is my life and I am very happy with it. Yes I need decent clothes for running errands, taking classes and socializing but the majority needs to hold up to dirt and be colorful enough to make me feel alive.

Completely agree! One's Capsule wardrobe is not meant to lose one's own style , personality or preferences. However, the 'Capsule wardrobe formula' that is out there is a very good generic starting point to help people to first learn the difference between chasing fashion trends vs getting long lasting quality pieces, and also teaching people the thought process they need to go through in order to build a wardrobe they really love, with less items. Once we have learnt these skills by following this formula, then we can go to the next step of personalising our wardrobe.

It seems like all the “on-trend” looks this last year have been monochromatic neutral outfits, especially in black or beige. These can be elegant, but they are just too citified for where I live, especially with the 5 or 6-inch heels and structured fancy handbags that always seem to be included. I always seem to want either some color, contrast, or a print item, like a scarf, in my outfits, so I’ve kept doing that. Also, it looks ludicrous when women wear multiple heavy sweaters, coats and scarves, then tip-toe through the snow in evening sandals and bare ankles, while emphasizing the importance of “comfort and practicality”. Also funny, to me, is the combination of $15 Walmart jeans and t-shirts with $5,000 designer handbags or shoes.

I still have my original copy of "working wardrobe" by Janet Wallach from 1981 -- she was a pioneer in the concept of a small core wardrobe based on two colors that worked for you, and could be navy and wine, or tobacco and marigold, but were centered around you. You started from what you liked to wear and built from there. You can build a great capsule wardrobe on camel and ivory, for example, and it can transition from linen/silk in the summer to wool/cashmere in the winter. There's more to life than neutrals!

But my leopard button down and my silk camis-, silk midi slip dresses , midi pencil skirts, long cardigan and all blazer colors, I wear all the time. The capsules always get me to but stuff I will never wear. I guess since they were not in my wardrobe, I did not need them. I like to watch when influencers who do capsule and minimalism wear color. I get that neutrals go with everything, but not if you will never reach for them. I only use neutral bottoms -like black, wine or denim pencil skirts and all my bottoms go with all my tops! None of which are white.

I feel this way about white Jeans. According to a number of bloggers and minimal enthusiast; white denim jeans are recommend for a minimal lifestyle/capsule wardrobe. After buying a pair ( I did love them but they constantly got stained) My body changed slightly and they were so tight. Recently, I swap them out from a pair of Auburn vegan, suade jeans. They suit myself so well and fit perfectly. In addition to the aforementioned; the whole leather jacket saga... Black yes although very chick can look sometimes too harsh on me ( even though I appreciate/admire the look on other women). I prefer brown. For this reason, I purchased a vegan brown, bomber, leather jacket that I love dearly. So true that everyone's style is different and purchasing items that suit you and your daily lifestyle is they key to a capsule wardrobe. Loved this video!!!

Hallelujah, how refreshing to hear someone explain that people are different. I can not wear black and I cannot wear white and I'm so tired of these people saying get a black shirt and a white shirt black pants. Not everyone can wear those colors and I don't want them and I don't have them in my wardrobe.

Amen, amen, amen! I think the majority of the time the aesthetic look of the capsule wardrobe comes form the fact that it photographs well. Then we go for what we see in the photograph and we want our closets to look as good. But, unfortunately, it doesn’t look or feel good in real life. It doesn’t allow for individuality, weather, occupation, etc. It took me a long time to come to this realization after I started doing capsule wardrobes and I still look for videos like yours to help me get better at it!

Well said. I love wearing my lime green tailored blazer. Can wear with orange scarf and shoes, hot pink silk scarf, I also made a coat in the same fabric but has worn out now unfortunately. I could wear them with brown, black, beige in winter, spring, summer, and autumn.

I just went on a 5 day holiday with a very colorful capsule: a teal trench dress, a purple shirt dress, orange pants, a bright pink blouse, a pink and red cami, a brown cami, a brown sweater, a purple hat, a purple and red handbag, red sandals, a red belt, and a scarf with all of the colors (except teal and red). Probably a nightmare for a 'neutral' capsule person :-) but it all worked together, I felt great and I got some compliments on my outfits. So cheers to colors!

I totally agree with the ideas in this video! A couple of things that helped me buy less and wear the things I have were the standard advice of knowing my personal style and colors. Now any clothes must fit in this framework. It eliminates a lot of random clothes that are never worn including most things recommended in lists for a capsule. Thanks for sharing these ideas. The goal of a capsule is fewer clothes worn more but not mandatory items.💕

Yes! I have never been drawn to capsule wardrobes because all the outfits look the same - you could tell it was a capsule. They just don't seem to be as versatile as touted to be...changing a purses does not make it a different outfit. I like your perspective. Cute, versatile, NOT boring! Thanks for sharing!

That leopard skirt is adorable. I loved that you showed all the ways you style it. I like the idea of a capsule wardrobe because purchasing less is good for both the pocket book and the planet. It also causes less confusion and saves time once you've gone through the process of deciding on the pieces and colors. It's fun to use a bit of mental energy to style pieces in different ways and get more use out of each one.

I have always grabbed for black, white, gray, pink (in spring & summer) and wine (in fall & winter). I also like to have something in chambray. Works for me. I don’t like stripes, but I do like a floral...usually one floral blouse is plenty.

So bang on! I created a minimalist wardrobe that is just insane, super bright colours and amazing patterns and I swear I am somehow pulling off the look - its bold, its nuts and I used to only wear black. I always get compliments and its a year round wardrobe now. When I reduced my wardrobe to only 20 items I found myself revamping it with amazing prints and colours. I wear leopard print panst with racer car shirts, a mix of feminine with tomboy streetwear. I am so happy with my minimalist wardrobe only 30 pieces and its because every piece makes me feel epic and radical! It is far from boring :)

I’m glad that you made a video about this. A Small Wardrobe made one about different capsule wardrobe styles that is a good addition to this video you made. There different aesthetics for what is considered a “capsule wardrobe” by the individual. It’s definitely all personal and you’re absolutely right...only collect & keep the pieces that compliment you, your personality and what fits your lifestyle. I fell into the trap of the “traditional” capsule wardrobe and I ended up wasting money on pieces that I never used and didn’t fit into my lifestyle. Love, love, LOVE this video! ❤️

I absolutely agree with you! I love and embrace color in my wardrobe, and black and white are just one of the colors for me. Not basic or staples. In colder weather I wear few colored sweaters (and pretty scarves) as my favorite tops paired with dark bottoms. In warm weather I gravitate more toward printed tunic tops. I never feel bored wearing the 5or 6 tops on rotation! Those are my uniform😊

You right 100%! Capsule wardrobes should be based on our lifestyles. As much as I'd love to dress up in heels, trousers and blazers everyday to work, it doesn't work for me because my main job is being a caretaker. I have to take some advice here and there but my capsule wardrobe is my own style at the end of the day.

I don't really adhere to a capsule wardrobe, but I do train myself to be more mindful and only buy pieces I see myself wearing for a long time, but one downside I've noticed that going for the ultimate classic can feel stuffy and old fashioned and pieces that can look very modern on others, can totally not translate when you wear it

I agree with you, Erin! A capsule wardrobe is very personal. I love rich jewel tones. I love black and white, however, red is my favorite color--it's my neutral! My next two favorite colors are royal purple and royal blue. My favorite type of blazer is black or red leather. My favorite footwear is Harley-Davidson biker boots!

I decided to do my capsule around a particular brand of clothing. St John Knits are quite expensive but they wind up eliminating a lot of missteps. For example, all the black items even over multiple years match perfectly. They are so beautifully made that they speak elegance with only minimal accessories. So I started with the Santana knit basics in black with my secondary colors of tan, white, and blush pink. By changing up scarves, bags, and jewelry, they look amazingly versatile. I added two pair of black jeans for more casual days.

Great content! Takeaway: How to build your own capsule wardrobe? --> Find out what works FOR YOU. Pieces that make you feel good and comfortable, that make YOU want to and WILL wear over and over again. Not pieces that others think as proper in a capsule wardrobe. It doesn't have to be a black t-shirt. If it's a hot pink print with stripes, let it be. 2:38 Get what makes you feel good and comfortable. It doesn't have to be a black T-Shirt. 3:46 "The Leopard print dress is one of the most-worn pieces for me. Even if it's not for you." Your capsule wardrobe is totally dependent on you. What makes you feel great and confident. What you want to and WILL wear over and over again. It doesn't have to fit one same-size little box. Ahhh thank you. Finally. Combining black jeans with a striped shirt is something I can come up with myself. No need for tutorials about that 😂 What I leaned from years of having a (quite boring) capsule is to shop in high quality, to really look after my garments and always make sure I can combine every new item in at least 7 cool ways before I buy so I create a vision board beforehand and put things together. Now I’m slowly getting there to have a really interesting capsule with pops of colour and beautiful items, that will last me for a long time.

Hi Erin. Well said - I'm glad you said it. I do have all those capsule basics, however, if a friend called up and said "let's go to lunch", I would never choose a white t-shirt or button-down, black blazer and jeans. When I started the idea of a capsule wardrobe for myself it was based on wanting to have something like the "uniform" I could easily grab and wear to work. At the time I was realizing my closet was filled with colors and patterns that didn't match, because I gravitate towards prints and bright colors. The way I went about it personally was cutting out specific colors completely and only keeping specific colors of work clothes. It became a lot easier to make outfits. Basically I got rid of navy and brown but kept black and gray which I felt went better with occasional bright colors. And got rid of white as well since I generally didn't like wearing it. After a number of years I learned which specific colors I really like wearing and brought browns back in, etc. It was a great exercise for me. And I totally would wear a dress every day if possible because it makes coordinating the whole outfit simple and lets me wear lots of prints as long as I have solid cardigans or blazers. That has become my personal go-to outfit for work. When I buy separate tops and bottoms I still have a tendency to buy colors and prints 😩 so about half my clothes are solid black to balance out my habits...

I'm so glad you made this. I followed one of those checklists to make my wardrobe and now I have a black blazer and two pairs of high heeled shoes that I've never worn. I just found this video while cleaning out my closet and I agree with this so much! To me, having a capsule wardrobe is having MY OWN and not one that is universal, because such a thing does not exist. I love mixing prints and basic pieces and I have a couple really special things I would never ever give away. To me it was important to get rid of things I never wear and switch to organic cotton for future buys, when I do need something. I am more conscious and I prefer quality over quantity. But what I do wear is my own decision.

Oh thank you so much for this video. I have always tried to persuade myself to like light wash jeans and white shirts, but I have gotten those things in the past and NEVER EVER wear them yet felt like they were necessary. omg THIS!!! I heard of the capsule wardrobe, looked into it a little online, and pretty much stayed away from the online content surrounding it because it's so prescriptive. My wardrobe is still in it's early stages of development. I don't have enough clothes right now. I'm constantly getting rid of pieces I don't like, and now all I have is stuff I do like...which really isn't that much haha But what I noticed is that I used to have only t-shirts as tops, and I actually don't really like t-shirts. It used to be the only thing I wore bc I don't like blouses, but those aren't the only two types of shirts out there 😂 I went to Savers and got a few spaghetti strap shirts, idk what to call these, but they're loose and cute, and I feel like the muted tones can be worn a couple times a week because bright colors are more attention grabbing. I love bright colors but I just haven't found the right bright shirt yet. Also, I wear clothes until they're worn through. For this reason, and the fact that I just don't know how to "dress up," I often look pretty dressed-down. The whole chic minimalist beige girl look doesn't work for me because my clothes are super worn out. I'd like to try a chic outfit at some point, but my budget is TIGHT and all I can get right now is more of what I know works.

About that thing with white that washes you out, I think it’s bc you where wearing the wrong tone. You see, a person who has pink undertones in their skin and it’s quiet light, will look good in a crisp white t-shirt. But people who have warm or golden skin will look really good in an off white t-shirt that matches their complexion. Hope someone will get a little inspiration from this:)

Agreed! Case in point... my mother-in-law insisted I order my wedding gown in white. I felt that white was too stark for my coloring, my skin tone is olive not to mention I was rocking a tan. When the white dress came in several months later and I went in for my first fitting, it was so disappointing. Unlike the excitement I felt when I'd originally tried on that (ivory) sample gown... it just didn't feel right at all. I begged the shop to reorder my dress for me in IVORY and wham, it was stunning. I felt like a runway model and I was absolutely glowing on my wedding day. The moral of this story: you do you. And never, ever, take your MIL along on the hunt for the perfect wedding dress. (I sure wish someone had told me that 30 yrs ago!)

The only striped clothing I love is black with skinny white stripes that are wide apart. I have a thick boatneck 3/4 sleeve shirt like that, and I love it so much. I also got a LulaRoe dress like that, but adding a matching blazer seemed like a bit much since I didn’t end up wearing the blazer. I wish I had occasions to actually wear blazers for. I like pairing the dress with solid colored jackets, or my only black leather jacket.
