As a designer this video was very useful. I tend to find myself, when designing logos, products, layouts, etc., skipping straight to refined sketches because as artists, we tend to be self-conscious with messy work and we are all cast under this mindset that everything must be perfect 100% of the time. Thankyou Jazza

Most art tutorials Step 1: "Draw a circle" Step 2: *giggles* "Ti hihi" Step 3: *presents masterpiece* "as you can see that what easy..."

This explains the issue I always had with most 'shapes' tutorials & tips. I always felt like something was missing because (to a degree) the shapes seemed almost arbitrary, I still struggled to understand the subject's structure and perspective. Finally someone talks about the connection between 3D composition and 2D simplification. Thank you!

"Draw with your shoulder" -every art teacher

I've been drawin since I was 8 years old. So 12, almost 13 years now! And these are some pretty helpful tips! Another tip I can give you if you usually sketch traditionally: Use different pencils for different sketching!!! I tend to lose myself in the fun of sketching a lot and what I end up with is basically a final drawing...but it's in pencil. To prevent that. Take a pencil that seems it needs some sharpening, DONT SHARPEN IT and do the sketching with that! That way you'll also have a harder time adding details so then maybe you wont want to do them because of the t h i c c lines. At least that's my case haha. I usually use that for rough sketches. I use rough sketching just to find shapes; to get basic anatomy done for example. No details. Just shapes. Then if I want it to be a bit of a refined sketch I usually take my mechanical pencil and add a few details ontop BUT WITH A VERY LIGHT HAND. Then that's usually it for me cause I like to paint in acrylics. But Jazza's video has more info on how to move onto the inking process so watch that part again!

I’d also like to add that the “automatic drawing technique” in which you hold the pencil loosely and just allow your mind to unhinge and begin drawing...whatever is a good way to “stretch before you sketch”. I actually teach automatic drawing techniques at a local art school and it’s amazing how much better drawings become when people relinquish the pencil death grip. Just my 2B cents.

I'm a self taught artist, and after 30 years, I've been trying to learn some of the fundamentals to finally address some of the areas I'm weaker in. I still enjoy going right in and drawing, but I'm actually seeing improvement when I sketch out the shapes and construction lines first and combining it with what I already know.

Watching this after years of watching you draw, I've realized that I now draw a lot like you do. My style is different, and my skill level is no where near yours, but when it comes to how I sketch out my base figures and poses, I already started drawing this way, all because of you. 😁

Mmm... as a digital artist, who is now entirely spoiled by layers, it's all a smoother process. Rough sketch first, then low opacity to refine the sketch above that, and repeat process for line work above that

my favourite art teacher i've ever had (and I've had like 3 or 4 that i can remember) taught me how to do exactly this... but without telling me to use shapes and stuff verbatim, he used other words that made me stop dragging my heels because it wasn't the same bullshit that I've always heard?? because recently, i tried drawing a side profile for the first time in about a year, and... my improvement immediately shot up. before, over the stretch of maybe 3 years, my side profiles looked the same, and not particularly well. my drawings that used a lot of shapes were waaay unproportional (especially heads), and i disliked how non-realistic it all looked. then i got to highschool and got my favourite art teacher back, and my improvement exploded again. so yeah, maybe from 8th-11th my side profiles were shit, but then take a break for a year, and then BAM!! i make a side profile that actually looks like a face love you, Mr gregory

Anyone else kinda just sketch, then sketch the details. Then become too lazy to finish the drawing so you just have a drawing you can barley see?

Man, this video is great. One thing I constantly get stuck on is thumbnail sketches. I always get way too attached to my first or second concept that I can't pull my focus away to let me develop other ideas. And if I don't find one I like within the first few idea's I'm so slow a drawer that I end up giving up on what I'm doing because I get bored, which absolutely sucks. Anyone else like this?

I'm still just awful at drawing. Getting better though! Lots of referencing and figuring out what I'm supposed to do😅

This is a really good explanation of sketching! I’ve been an artist for a long time now, I only had a good art teacher for my first year of school and she explained how important getting your basic shapes are. I had to learn a lot of stuff myself, but it really helped to have those few lessons. This is gonna be so helpful for so many people!

Noo your not sketching right dude when you sketch you have to use angles and dimensions for pin point accuracy how do you not know this i always see people around your age screw up perspective you need to treat it like a 3d model because this is a big no no when sketching
