I remember being more emotional when i was a child, but over time i learned how destructive people can be to themselves and others when they're in a negative place. This caused me to want to be as emotionally stable. Dale Carnegie's first rule - "don't criticise, condemn, or complain", is something i go by every day. And it makes my social relations really good, and myself in a stable place. However, i noticed lately that i have become scared of being emotionally vulnerable. The reason I don't want to date right now is because i can be anxious, depressed, and drained of my logic strength when I'm dating, and i have enough shit in my life that i need to do, that i can't afford to put myself into a rough period. However, when i talked to my therapist about it, and i said to her that at some point I'll need to start putting myself out there again, she said that i could start doing it now. But that scares me, i will lose control over my tasks in life, and I don't want to become the very thing i was scared of.

If you’re a guy just know that being sensitive doesn’t make you weak. When I was 19 I started on the ambulance service and I had such an insanely hard time dealing with the day to day of it. It was exactly what he said “things hurt more than they hurt other people”. I looked around and felt like everyone was so much better at dealing with the lifestyle than me. I didn’t feel like a man. Years later I work in critical care, I am in a stressful job but I can express my empathy freely in a clinical setting more than I could’ve in the emergency setting and now I am do my job and competently. I am 24 now. If you are a young man please just know you don’t have to suppress your emotions, be huge and muscular or have a bunch of tattoos. You are already a man, you just are going to find out what kind of man you are going to be.

I’m a woman, but I too have felt embarrassed and weak by a lot of my emotions. I’ve had female friends mock me for feeling emotional over a film or a song (safe to say I’m not friends with those people anymore), but even those who didn’t necessarily “mock” I could tell were confused by my reaction. In my 30s now, I’ve learned to embrace a lot of my empathy, but I do still catch myself trying to suppress it at times. Thank you for reminding us that being sensitive can be a beautiful thing. 🙂✌️

Being that sensitive is literally the best thing that can happen to someone in my eyes. I personally realized that very early that I am extremely observant to everything around me and can take up subtle changes in most things, be it temperature, light, but also how people act and thus I have an easy game identifying their intentions. While I can remember the difficulties that you mentioned in my earlier life, now at 34 I can safely say that being aware of yourself makes you the happiest person in existence. Sure, I learned to channel my emotions and sensitivity for the outside world, but handling this is in my eyes also a big win for everyone who feels the same.

Recommended books: Highly Sensitive Person, Sensitive, Empowering the Sensitive Male Soul, The Highly Sensitive Man. Also: Sensitive Refuge website Quiet by Susan Cain is also sort of about sensitivity/introversion. My advice: don't suppress it, it's an innate trait, it's for life. Learn to live with it. Read, join HSP support groups, meet other highly sensitive people. Make lifestyle changes. Please don't fight it. Embrace it.

I'm highly empathic. I sometimes hate that part of me, but at the same time, there are so many people I've helped, felt for, and cried with who needed that part of me. Everyone being cold and calloused means a much colder world in which individual problems don't matter in the face of "big", "important" problems. I still hate it sometimes though and have isolated myself so often to avoid triggering that part of myself so often. Everything hurts indeed...

The key is to simply not care about what other people think of you. I know, that is extremely hard, but if you pull it off the reward is magnificent. You also become more empathetic, not less because you calm down and actually process what other people are thinking and why they are thinking it. Already enough shit as it is.

how can we in society create an emotional sensitivity level thats standard for everyone, we will either end up excluding more sensitive people or pissing off lots of people while where comforting the one person who felt triggered, it could be seen as a disability, or a super power, maybe teaching in school how to manage emotions and feelings not control them but have them appropriate for the setting and a let loose place, its a fascinating thing cos nothings like emotions and everyone is different its almost an impossible thing, one of which could be the whole of humanity not getting along cos we don't connect when we should.

I have a Highly Sensitive Personality (HSP) and hate it. The only good thing about it is that I am very highly tuned into my surroundings and excellent at reading people, I'm an excellent judge of character because I am able to pick up on very subtle nuances. The bad of course is everything else because I am highly prone to being emotionally damaged by the words and actions of others, whether intentional or not. This also places me as a Type B personality and I feel overwhelmed in large crowds because of sensory input overload. I have an overactive nervous system which I believe contributes to this. I take an SSRI to dull those inputs and make myself less emotional and more able to focus.

Embrace your sensitivy, mates! Your friends lives depend on it. Have a look at the book "Confessions of a Sensitive Man" and learn to appreciate- and live your true self. Don't let anyone prevent you from being your true nature in a complex, ever-demanding world. Cheers.

I'm very sensitive about my impression and my respect. When someone humiliates me I easily get offended and a large amount of anger is reinforced inside my head, ngl, the way that anger wants to get released is by confronting that person. So, the idea that I should release those emotions rather than suppress them, how should I do it in this situation??

There’s a lot of guys talking about how men try to suppress their emotions because other guys make fun of it or think you’re weak. I haven’t seen that. The only people that looked at me less than or made it seem like a negative thing is women. Men have been supportive anytime I’ve been emotionally vulnerable, women lose respect, attraction for you if you show it. They ridicule or talk about it behind your back and say you’re weak or pathetic… men aren’t trying to suppress it. They suppress it because they know they will fail completely with women if they do and our whole biological drive is to have success with the opposite sex

I'm too dead inside to be sensitive. The only time I almost cried was a certain death scene in Naruto which I won't spoil, but I still didn't cry.

Same. I feel like I lost my emotion of crying. If I feel like crying, it either just goes away or converts into anger for no reason..

Is anybody else out there so sensitive that rejection feels like the end of the world? When rejection is all you get and it feels absolutely horrible honestly not even trying seems like the more stomachable option
