Wearing a snorkel as a scuba diver can be a highly debated topic. On one head, they can be useful at the surface, in rough seas, with a lot of waves, in emergency situations, and more. On the other hand, snorkels can be entanglement hazards, can get in the way in general, can cause mask leaks, and tech divers often don't wear them because they aren't very useful except at the surface. In this video, I present the BEST roll up snorkel, which is a perfect solution to this debate to ALWAYS bring a snorkel with you while scuba diving.
This video is NOT sponsored, though Kraken Aquatics did provide their roll up snorkel to me for free. They did not require me to do a video for them in order to receive this free item You can check out their website here: www.krakenaquatics.com/. #ad

Most of my diving has been diving from charter boats off the east coast of Florida, Where we dove in a lot of current. I just found the snorkel annoying. I switched to a roll up snorkel that I just keep in a pocket in case I need it. I actually like the AIRII. I dove with one for many years. If you are going to use one you need to switch to primary donate. When I dove with one I used a 5ft. hose on my primary hose. Note, I worked for a dive shop that sold a lot of AIR II's. Today, I have gone back to 2 second stages. I still do primary donate and I keep my safe second on a neck lanyard.

With a long hose, it’s better, but I’ve still seen so many students grab their inflator instead of a snorkel or just have issues with them that I think it’s a great idea, in theory, but if you aren’t all diving it you may be thrown off in an emergency when someone is panicking more. It’s not “bad” but it’s not my preference unless everyone has been using them. As for the snorkel, roll up is my go to now for sure. Not a fan of one being in the way otherwise, especially if I’m on a wreck and decide to do a tiny penetration, or go through a swim through, etc.
@jeffconley6366
@jeffconley6366 8 месяцев назад
In my view diving with an AIR II should be the same as diving primary donate. Diving any configuration beyond the standard configuration taught in the Open Water class is for experienced divers.
@CircleHScuba
@CircleHScuba 8 месяцев назад
That’s my thought too. Not everyone is taught OW with primary donate, some agencies do that but not everyone. Air II isn’t standard enough otherwise imo, so it can cause confusion in a panic scenario.

I've done dives with and without my snorkel and to be honest I like diving with it more often than not. Especially with large group and shore dives, like you mention a pro is you use your snorkel on the surface waiting for the group to enter or exit the water or for the boat on a drift dive. Last dive in Cozumel (drift dive Palancar Gardens) we waited 20 minutes at the surface for pickup. It was nice to be able to have your face in the water searching for that stealthy great white shark sneaking up on ya....lol Thx for the heads up on new product like this, it's something to consider for sure.
@CircleHScuba
@CircleHScuba 9 месяцев назад
If you see a stealthy great white in Cozumel let me know and I'm getting a ticket right away, haha. I've been there and have not ran into one yet sadly, haha. I honestly go back and forth on the snorkel so often and until I tried a roll up snorkel like this, I basically had decided I'd go without unless I knew conditions were going to require one at the surface. It's a tough choice sometimes though, for example if I'm penetrating a wreck from the ocean, I'd want one at the surface but absolutely do NOT want one inside that wreck. Glad you found the video useful and thanks for sharing your opinion on it too! This really seems like a great option and I think it's the best solution to provide that "best of both worlds" type of thing.

I have this already, in a neon orange color, and love having it out of the way but accessible when needed. Currently studying for Rescue Diver and was excited that this has a huge Pro as well. Because of some of the Cons you mentioned, namely no splash guard nor purge, it's another useful tool to provide rescue breaths depending on the scenario; a technique that's sadly going extinct because scuba divers chose convenience over practicality for something they rarely use 😢 Love the content 👌

This is a great example of its utility!!! Thanks for sharing that! So cool that you already have one! How have you liked it overall outside of the accessibility when needed? Also happy to hear you’re loving the content! Good luck on Rescue Diver!

@@CircleHScuba it, along with a spare mask, take up a full BCD pocket, so that kind of stinks but I like having options and wouldn't trade it. My holder came with a clip for hanging from a d-ring but I can't say I'd trust the snorkel not to fall out of the holder I have which is just a horseshoe shape which goes a little higher than 9 and 3 o'clock. I might experiment with heating up the holder a little and bending it in slightly so it offers more holding strength 💪

I’m not a snorkel fan personally. But I do like the roll up snorkel to stay compliant with ✨standards✨ I was in the worst current of my experiences a few weeks back. Topside on the mooring line waiting for a group to release and move to the tag line to board. I surfaced with 900 PSI and finally got on the ladder with 300. It was rough and I was a minute away from pulling the snorkel out, so they are good to have available IMO.
@CircleHScuba
@CircleHScuba 9 месяцев назад
For standards is a fun “trick” that I know people do for sure haha. I personally wear one when teaching OW at the least if not also AOW (depending on the specialty) because I try to showcase the “good habits.” But yeah, in my pocket works great otherwise. As for your current experience, shoot I would’ve probably set up my roll up snorkel just because if you got blown off the line that would’ve been a rough swim or longer wait! Mind if I ask where you were diving?

@@CircleHScuba we were doing a night dive on the Lady Luck in pompano beach. She sits at 130’ to the sand and the conditions vary wildly. My very first dive on her was 100’ viz and zero current. Every other dive on the site since then has been challenging with this last one being the worst. We all bailed on dive 2. The current broke after 25’ but it was just too much to want to bother with again. By “we all” I mean my team. The techies did a deco rebreather dive and all the open circuit divers refused dive 2.

I think it heavily depends on the environment too. If I think I'll be in an environment with huge waves, I might keep one in my pocket. In my experience, I've gotten my snorkel entangled with micro-filament lines more than I needed it above shore. They've also been annoying when needing to dive with a deployed DSMB as it restricts my movement/becomes an entanglement nuisance (i.e., for some drift dives).
@CircleHScuba
@CircleHScuba 9 месяцев назад
I called out entanglements but definitely could’ve gone into detail because you’re absolutely right. A line from a DSMB, lift bag, monofilament, etc is a bit of nightmare sometimes with the snorkel. This roll up snorkel takes up so little space in my pocket that I can’t see not bringing it. I mean if I’m in a cavern or super calm conditions I guess I’d leave it behind, but even calm conditions can change. The fresh water cavern may be the only reason I’d leave it completely versus having it in the pocket.
@MetallicReg
@MetallicReg 9 месяцев назад
I am the one in the camp of "they get in the way of the vast majority of recreational dives and small cave dives". I dove with them at first and later on without them. I always dive in calm conditions and never in really bad weather (and check the weather report). So my emergency return route wouldn't include snorkeling, but rather inflating BCD and comfortably swimming on my back. Yes this makes navigation less reliable - but I am also relying primarily on my dive computer for navigation including the one of my buddy. If you are not going for unplanned dives in unplanned conditions (which I never do and never advise any tourist to do) - they only get in the way. PS: There is an argument of your BCD failing. Then, however, you would leave your whole gear behind regardless if you somehow drifted too far away. This is a case where you should always remember to stay with your buddy at all times.
@CircleHScuba
@CircleHScuba 9 месяцев назад
Thoughts on the solution presented, a pocket snorkel for when you do wish you had one? I also dive without one almost always, but now with the pocket snorkel, I take that with me for open water dives in the ocean

I was looking for some videos on RU-vid for a long time about good diving tips. And I came across you. Even though I've only been watching for a few days, I will say that you have great videos and you explain everything super. I don't know if you dive in a dry suit but if so, maybe you could record some a video on how to empty the air from a drysuit, how you are upside down because there is too much air in your legs, etc 😎😎

Hey!! Welcome to the channel, and thanks for the feedback and video idea! I'll write that down. I do have a dry-suit though I use it only in the colder months, so this is something I'll be able to look into doing this winter! I'm still a newer channel, so I'm happy you found me. If you have other questions or video ideas, please feel free to let me know!

Also, in a pinch use the snorkel keeper atypically. Both holes don't need to go over the snorkel, only 1 does. I've been able to loop it under my mask strap and through itself (using one of the holes) and feed the snorkel up therough the other free hole using just one hand. Works in a pinch although it's a little bit flimsier conection. I keep one on my AI transmitter in case mine or anyone's clip breaks. Has come in handy

This is a good point. I may have to do a DIY snorkel keeper video now 🤣 It’s really my only “con” that I can think of is that double ender basically requires I remove my mask. But it’s definitely solvable like you said and they could’ve just left us without any snorkel keeper at all, so I’m happy there’s something there.

The last part of this video about surfacing only to find no dive boat or the boat is far away is something that divers need to be aware of. You should always carry an smb with you and it should be shot BEFORE you make your assent. Why anyone would go on a boat dive and not have an smb is just stupid and asking for trouble.
@CircleHScuba
@CircleHScuba 9 месяцев назад
I agree on the DSMB so you can shoot one, however boats leaving people behind is something that has happened whether a diver is aware or it or not. A lot of dive sites are “out and back” type of navigation and if the boat leaves before you come back due to a bad headcount, or medical emergency, etc. the diver(s) underwater are kind of stuck. You can shoot a DSMB and that’s the best effort to have them see you on the surface, but people still get left behind even with one. The video I link at the end talks about two stories, one where he definitely had his DSMB.

@@CircleHScuba Approaching 1000 dives all around SE Asia...can count the number of divers using a snorkel on my hands. Maybe it's more of a safety obsessed North American thing 🤔
@CircleHScuba
@CircleHScuba 6 месяцев назад
It’s totally fine to have a different opinion, but let’s try not insulting entire regions of divers. I was letting you know the full video basically says there’s safety situations where a snorkel is useful, but having the snorkel fixed all the time is a pain, so something that fits in a pocket is perfect to balance convenience with safety. Not sure what the argument is to not take it ever when there’s little to no issue with a small pocket sized item. Also it depends where you’re diving. Off our coast we have swells over 3m often. Not having a snorkel during one of those emergency times could really suck. I haven’t dove in SE Asia yet, so I’m not sure if there are regularly large swells in the ocean dives there but it’s a reality in many places, outside of North America too. You take the equipment with you based on the diving you’re doing. I’m sure with the number of dives you have, you’d agree?

Would love to hear why it’s strange to discuss the need of a snorkel or not, and then recommending a solution that covers both angles? If you read other comments, a lot of people already use roll up snorkels for the very reasons I called out. Curious what was strange about it so I can take the feedback into consideration when making other videos.
