Your microwave clock might not use that much power, but add it to your plugged in tv, computer, DVR, etc.? That's a lot of wasted energy.

Home Idle Load: Devices Wasting Huge Amounts of Electricity When Not in Active Use
www.nrdc.org/s...
"There has been a veritable explosion in the number of electronics, appliances, and other equipment plugged into, or permanently connected to, America's homes-65 devices on average in our study. Most are consuming electricity around-the-clock, even when the owners are not using them or think they have been turned off."
Pulling the plug on standby power
www.economist.c...
"Strange though it seems, a typical microwave oven consumes more electricity powering its digital clock than it does heating food. For while heating food requires more than 100 times as much power as running the clock, most microwave ovens stand idle-in "standby" mode-more than 99% of the time."
The devices quietly running up your energy bills
www.telegraph.c...
"Most of us know that to cut our energy bills we should turn things like televisions and computer monitors off at the wall rather than leaving them in standby mode, which consumes power even when they're not being used."

@ZeldagigafanMatthew

Renewables are always perfect. Hydroelectric relies on a steady current, which can vary based on the time of day, solar can't output any useful when the sun is obscured, or the horizon, or not over the panels, geothermal is not reliable everywhere only a handful of places are geothermal hotspots, wind (see hydroelectric). Needless to say, there is almost no renewable energy source that can operated at peak production 24/7, unlike coal, gas, or nuclear.
@georgecataloni4720
@georgecataloni4720 8 лет назад
I'm pretty sure renewables are less efficient right now. Though, even if that changed, non-renewable sources get more government subsidies than renewables, so we'd pay more even if we switched. Instead of voting for more renewable subsidies, we should end all energy subsidies.
@Sinaeb
@Sinaeb 8 лет назад
Well, only 10-20% of coal energy is used for electricity. And renewable energies are more efficient than that .. Check one of their videos idk wich one.

Then manufacturers should make it so that when things aren't in use, they aren't drawing power. Or houses should be wired with switches on plugs. Nobody's going to crawl under the desk or pull out the fridge several times a day.
@kuyaleinad4195
@kuyaleinad4195 8 лет назад
Why would you unplug your fridge XD Fridges are exempted from this since you basically use it everyday. They're talking about those people who leave computers, dvd players, microwaves, TV etc... On when not in use or they leave it on stand by. Things like Fridges, Freezers and Aquariums need to be on 24/7 since they're always in use.

Most, if not all UK homes have a switch for each outlet for safety reasons, but similarly could be used in such a case to save energy.

If it is a good power point (of which most American power points are not), then there is a switch at the wall that cuts power just as well as unplugging.

I once checked how much power each one of my appliances was drawing when "off", and after doing some math I discovered almost 1/3 of my total power consumption per month was because of that stupid standby mode they all have. I added on/off switches to everything shortly after; extension cords, cables and even drilled holes in some appliances.

I understand some are a hassle, but it's better on your PC to be shut down when not in use. If you need your PC at a moment's notice I suggest a Solid State Drive be used for your operating system allowing boot up times of 10 seconds. You will in the long run save money, electricity, and if you aren't super tech savvy you save the irritation of buying a new PC not knowing what model you actually need.

Many electronics go into standby when you turn them off for many reasons. Two reasons in smart devices is to install updates while you're asleep and prime the screen to instantly turn on when you need it. Microwaves and other "dumb" devices draw power for the clock display.

I learned about this in my Ecology class in college. I agree with unplugging things to not drain power, mostly for the environmental affects from power plants, however, it is an EXTREME inconvenience. Every time you unplug something with a clock, it will most likely have to be reset manually when you plug back in. Having to constantly unplug then re-plug in your i.e. microwave is a pain. Most appliances are plugged into outlets that you can't easily reach, having to crawl under desks, tables, pull out giant furniture such as couches and standing dressers/armoire closets and beds, etc. Every time you unplug then re-plug your DVR it resets, not to mention the point of a DVR IS to run while you're not using it so you don't have to remember or be around when a program you want comes on.

Sounds like a lot of bunk studies without consulting a electrical engineer. Reality electricity is not "wasted". The only factor is the load placed on the Generators that is about it (its produced on demand). The vast majority of loss would come from grid it self. In the from of Thermal (resistance) or as EMR, which is not something you can fix. As for the Inactive appliances most rated devices have a draw of about 10mA when not in use (assuming its not a cheap Chinese knockoff with questionable circuitry).

What she's saying here makes perfect sense and is quite reasonable. However, while some people are willing to take the extra time to unplug, most will not. Also to clarify, home electronics do not generate carbon dioxide; she is referring to the extra emissions generated by power stations (burning fossil fuels). Do your best to help, but we simply need to continue pushing for greener alternatives to generating power to really solve this problem.

Most modern devices have a smart standby funktion due to rising enviermantal demands. but the clock on your microwave is not consuming much. its a simpel circuit that run low power LEDs that can run on a simple AAA-battery for like a year or so. so your not going to save the planet by unplugging it. I wonder what devices is included in these studies? but it is true that some devices consume a bit more, standby consumtion for your tv is probably half of the yearly total for that your device. Getting extension cords that have a breaker on it is a fix for this; just tap it with your foot when you leave and tap it again when your using it.

The start up power which recharges the capacitors that have drained which takes a lot of power on computers. Also the starting of a hard drive from being turned off uses a lot more energy as when a hard drive is not being use it goes to sleep which means it keeps spinning but just enough and since they are all in a vaccum and on crazy bearing it doesn't take much to keep going in a circle.

I always turn the power switch off to my computer desk when not in use, BUT that quick power surge going into the unit over time also just recently blew out the power supply on my old computer. I still turn off the switch, BUT I dont do it to save power, I do it to save myself money. So unplugging and plugging things in all the time repeatedly is not good for your appliances or toys, but you have to risk the cost of energy compared to replacement of units.

So, I tried to wake up my parents and they realized they're also late for work since the alarm was unplugged. My parents rushed to the land phone, but it was unplugged and took 10 minutes to booth. Meanwhile, they took their cellphones but I removed the batteries to save energy. So another 10 minutes of booting. Then, they called the ambulance. The ambulance came but they needed hot water for my grandfather's medication. So, we waited another 30 minutes for the boiler to heat up. Finally, the doctor announced that the CO2 emission in grandfather's room has been eliminated forever.

It's funny how you mention cost because the electricity company won't care because your pay for it. In Western Australia the government encouraged home owners to install solar panels on our roofs with a 3k cash back incentive. The power companies realised they were not selling enough power to the grid so they charged more and the cost per unit has risen by over 200% in 4 years so we are all back to square one and getting 300-500$/month bills again

While unplugging our personal devices might save each of us a few dollars a year it is the thousands of power transformers connected to the power lines that waist the large amounts of energy. New regulations which came into effect January 2016 have reduced the power consumption of newly manufactured units but it will be many years before the old ones are replaced. Maybe you could run some numbers and do a segment on the estimated power waisted by the power transformers which supply all buildings across the US.

Plugs only draw in electricity when needed. If your laptop of the phone is off and it's fully charged the only electricity that will be taken is the tiny amount needed to run background applications. For example. Ever left your phone for a while come back and you've lost like 2%. That's all the electricity that would be drawn from the plug. Your Microwave that has a clock on it. This draws out nearly any power. What I'm getting at is appliances left on that aren't in use don't draw near as much as they do when they are running. Don't think that just cause it's on it using all the power it can get.

I bet most of that 23% are computers and televisions. I wonder if that includes lighting when someone walks out of a room? If you are really serious about reducing your carbon-footprint, don't sweat the small stuff. Address the "heavy hitters" (Electric Clothes Dryer, Water Heater, AC, Incandescent Lighting, Electric Heaters, Refrigerators, Freezers, etc) This reminds me of how conservationists tell elementary school kids to make sure they turn off the faucet while they brush their teeth, and every drop counts! Meanwhile there is a golf course 2 miles away that uses 300,000 gallons of water a day just to have pretty green fairways.

Honestly the main one is a tank water heater that keeps on heating back up. If you don't need hot water for hours at a time (you're sleeping or at work) switch the thing off! Everything else is negligible compared to that. The several biggest energy users will be hot water, cooking and heating (if electric), air conditioning (if you need it), and charging an electric car (if you have one), though even a petrol or diesel car is going to cost money, likely more. And don't linger and daydream in the shower. My laptop is 10 watts, my lights are 20 watts and my TV is 60 watts, my fridge is 60 watts 20% of the time.

Why is it almost impossible to get modern devices that can be shut down? In Denmark the new standard for power sockets is without a circuit breaker. So if I really want to power something down I need to crawl on the floor unplugging the devices.I had a new radio that got warm in standby mode. It used more than 10 W doing absolutely nothing. No remote, no important information to be retained. And some of those cheapy things may also get you a new home. If they torch the old one while unattended.

Actually, turning off devices is not enough. If I am not mistaken, most electrically powered devices draw current even when turned off. They must be unplugged from the wall socket to truly not use any electricity. However, making the unplugging from the wall of televisions, microwaves, stoves, lamps, powered speakers, alarm clocks, fans, computers, and printers is not very convenient without careful forethought.

I wouldn't worry about this with the newer type switching type power adapter. It uses about half a watt for about a second then it drops to 0W when it is not plugged into the electronic device it was intended for. Older linear power adapters use some power continuously no matter what. The one that comes with the Nintendo NES (Yes, that is old, but it is the only adapter of this kind I have) draws about 2.5 watts just simply being plugged in... not even connected to the NES! Power adapters for phones and laptops, as long as it is the newer type, will draw nothing.... so keep them plugged in if you want.
