hate to tell you this, for the true night owls. living in the world of day dwellers is a life long struggle. over 30 years is a good indication you day dwellers are horrific and oppressive group of humans. the clock never really resets, we can function in your world, i stumble through the morning like a zombie until noon, then i finally get to then point of functional. when that sun goes down it is like a breath of fresh air and you just wake up. then you look at the clock and grumble as you try to go to sleep as your mind is suddenly racing. it's amazing and frustrating.

I love being a night person, waking up at 11-12. Going outside when it's really warm in the middle of the day. Eating lunch at 5, dinner at 10. Staying up late when the world is nice and quiet and going to bed at 2-4 in the morning. The only thing that sucks is having a job keeps me from making this lifestyle of mine absolute.

If I'm waking up at 6am to enjoy the morning at my leisure, then it's worth it. It'll be a sweet experience. But if I'm dragging my carcass out from under my warm blanket to rush to get dressed and crawl in traffic to an office job for the 4th day in a week, then we have a problem.

I'll say this, I am a night person, but I think I'm kinda just drawn to the dark, quiet, alone time. If everything went on in the night as it does day, I would go crazy. Sometimes I sit in the car, enjoy the windows down, cool breeze and soft music. I'd be the most productive person in the would if only I had a work task to fit such a schedule. 2am for the win. Any career options anyone?

You sound like an interesting person. What state?
@Deadlychuck84
@Deadlychuck84 8 лет назад
Trace, you forgot the opposite option to what you said at 2:15, jet lag works in both directions. If you can stay up late easier, then all you have to do is, if you have a few free days, shift the time you go to sleep by about 3-4 hours. That way you can go full circle in the opposite direction. Instead of shifting your time earlier in the morning, you start waking up in the late afternoon, then the middle of the night, then the early morning (like 2am). Eventually you'll make it to ~6am, and you stop.

I’ve been a night owl since I was 5! I remember as a preschooler going to bed at 1am, and that’s really late for such a young kid. I usually sleep at 5am and wake up around noon, I never feel 100% during the day no matter how much I sleep I had the previous night. I can, however, have the longest day ever, school, gym, work etc and STILL be super energetic at 3am (me right now). It truly is a struggle but also makes my life unique :)

I'm a night person, I would go to sleep at 3 am every day if I didn't have school but when u don't have to go to school I actually really love early mornings. When it's sunny and the sun shines through your window and you go to the kitchen take sth to eat and go outside with your cats and dogs. It's just such an awesome feeling and I would be a morning person if school wouldn't ruin the morning for me with all that stress and having to be on time and stuff

The getting up part definitely works. I put my phone on the other side of my room and then have to do a maths game to turn it off in the mornings. The only thing that inhibits me from continuously starting the day early now is that it's winter, and no south african homes have central heating. So I end up being so cold I crawl back into bed and then fall asleep again...

Once my sleeping schedule was so bad, I slept when I came back from scl, woke up rlly rlly late then stayed until scl finished...the weird part was that it was one of the most productive weeks in my life. I did all my hw, studied rlly well for an exam I had and genuinely felt happy and not stressed from scl for once. But I had to stop it cause I haven't seen my parents or anyone outside of scl at all.

Not sure if I am a night person, but my 'natural' state is to go to bed around 2-3am and wake up around 9-10. Sadly this is not compatible with holding down a 'real job' so I had to change. This is what I did to wake up earlier: 1) take a small dose of sleep aide before bed. Not a lot, just enough to cause a trigger over time. For me it was a ~1/4 dose of zzz-quil 20 min before bed 2) Set an alarm without a snooze, and actually wake up when it goes off EVERY DAY. Sleeping in on the weekends will destroy you, the human body is meant to have a single day-night cycle, not a weekday and weekend cycle. I found it helps to have something to do right when you wake up, a sort of routine to get you going. 3) Shortly after you wake up, have some caffeine with breakfast. I am not a coffee drinker, so for me it is a can of Coke 0. Again, not a lot, just a single cup/can will do just fine over time. 4) Survive the day. No naps, no additional caffeine, etc. etc. etc. The point is to have a few triggers to get you going and get you to stop and let your body get use to having a normal day. 5) Eat. Don't starve yourself, but also don't try to stick with only 3 meals a day. Have 4-5 smaller meals throughout the day. The helps your blood sugar stay steady throughout the day which means no high-highs, but also no big crashes through the day either. 6) Be physically active. Not saying to wear yourself out every day, but just *do* something during the day outside of staring at a computer all day and a TV all night. Go for walks/hikes, do your own yard work, play with your kids or critters, etc. etc. etc. Don't run a marathon, but just have some amount of active time during the day so your body feels that it will need a rest at the end of the day. 7) Be consistent. While we socially have a differentiation between days of the week, we physically don't. Try your best to have a consistent level of activity, food intake, and sleep every day so your body doesn't have to keep trying to 2nd guess what you are about to do. If you are totally wiped out at the end of most days then try to be less busy. If you can't sleep because you have too much energy at the end of the day then take up a hobby. I generally sleep terribly, and have spent most of my days in a fog, but I have been trying the above for ~2 years now and things are totally different. My quality of sleep is still questionable, but I typically have little trouble getting to bed in the evening, and waking up in the mornings is much easier than it use to be (as in, it is no longer impossible lol). Best part is that I am more aware during my work day, and more present with my kiddos in the afternoons when I get home. Not perfect, and I still have rough days, but nowhere near as bad as it was, and my family and co-workers notice the difference.

total nights girl here. in fact all of my mother's brother and sisters were night people and all took sleeping pills to cope. I just work night shift instead and am super happy with it. I also found I'm at my healthiest when working nights. I never get sick, I eat better there for losing weight, and with slim chances of having kids I had 2 on night shift cycles. sounds weird I know. But my body agrees with nights!!:)

One trick to force your sleep cycle to reset in just 24 hours, instead of gradually over a week or so as is usual advice, is to fast for a whole day, wake up when you would like to wake up, then immediately eat a good breakfast. Telling your body that THIS is the time of the day when food happens, after not giving it any food for a while, will hit your brain's reset switch and getting up at that time will be much easier the following days.

I think health is the key. If you are healty you will be more productive, it is not so important when. But also your sleep will be more effective(so less) and easyer to control both falling asleep and waking up.
@neeneko

Something fascinating to try, if one has the schedule, is to see what kind of schedule they keep if one is completely disconnected from 24 hour life. Turns out my natural cycle is around 30 hours, which really screws things up.

@shadfurman
@shadfurman 8 лет назад
As a person who has to switch wake-up times often, its much easier to just get up once and power through a day low on sleep than it is to slowly adjust the clock. Also you can easily use naturalish drugs to bump your circadian rhythm to where you want it, once you figure out your chemistry you can get away with almost no jet lag, although going back and forth too quick too often can definitely really burn you out fast, I haven't figured out whats getting depleted here. The body is just chemistry... really really complicated chemistry, theres absolutely no reason with the right inputs you can't do almost anything without any side effects, its just really really really really hard chemistry.

I think my internal clock runs on a 26-28ish hour day. My natural sleep pattern slowly moves around the clock by a few hours each day. If I go to sleep at 1AM today I might go to sleep at 4AM tomorrow and 8AM the day after that. Eventually I end up all the way around the clock until I'm sleeping at night again, but then it starts all over. Occasionally my sleep patterns will abruptly change if I take a nap and I go through a period where I sleep a few hours at night and a few hours in the day.

When I want to adjust my sleep schedule I find it easier to stay awake longer than usual, wake up later than usual (usually by 30min to an hour) and eventually over the course of a couple weeks I can have whatever sleep schedule I want. Going backwards is just too hard while going forwards is so much easier. Just my experience though

I know an easier way. Pull an All-Nighter, and sleep 12 hours before you want to wake up. So if you wanna wake up at 5 am, sleep at 5 pm after you pulled the All-Nighter. It works every time. Keep in mind you gotta be awake for at least 24 hours, in order to be extremely tired, that's what the All-Nighter comes along. Good Luck

I must have that night time gene. I have always had a hard time falling asleep early, my clock seems to be on a 25 hour cycle. so I get tired 1 hour later every night. problem is, this seems to happen even if I get up at the same time, getting less and less sleep, until I eventually can go to bed a bit early , but then the whole thing repeats. Once I am sleeping , I sleep well, and can sleep 8 hours normal. its the falling to sleep part at the same time every night. result, I get maybe 2 days a week with full 8 hours sleep, the rest are anywhere from 3-6 hours.

So what about when you spend 6 months going to bed and waking up at the same time, spend as much time in the sun as possible? Bright lights, caffeine, etc and still never fully wake up, never feel rested and will fall asleep whenever you sit down for more than 3 minutes. This is the question. Everyone knows there are morning and night people. The world is built for morning people. We need to figure out how to get to be a functional morning person without feeling like we are dying non stop.

The night is when my brain recharges. I am more productive, I think better, and I'm happier. In the morning my brain doesn't function as well, I'm cranky, slow to respond, and I'm generally unhappy. It's true even when I get a good night of sleep. In other words, I'm a night person. I operate in the day, but the poor people around me suffer for the first couple of hours.

You can also pull an all nighter and depending on what time you want to go to sleep pass out accordingly lol Like if you want to wake up at 6:00 then subtract 10 hours and fall asleep then. For my case I wanted to wake up at 8 am so I pulled an all nighter and went to sleep at 10pm I woke up at 7:40 am so it works roughly :3

I've been working nights for like 3 years and i think it has made me depressed, but soon I am changing, finally, from finishing at 6 AM to waking up at 5 Am :')

I had that for a while, working at a night club. The lack of Vitamin D from the sun is a huge factor in causing depression. It's a big player in seasonal depression.

Night person here... When I go to bed earlier, I just lay awake until my usual bedtime. So this method doesn't really work for me.

I'm a morning person!!!! But as I finish work at midnight or 1am. I've managed to change myself to a night person doing the same thing as you suggested. but every holiday. I love waking up at 430am and go for a jog. I don't know why everything feels fresher and I love the morning sun (I'm in Scotland - the sun is up at that time in the summer).

I tend to wonder if we who are best at night might just be an evolutionary adaptation to a village environment where we stayed up to protect the village while most people slept. Mornings are difficult for me no matter how much I try to adapt to getting up early for work in a morning people world. I hit my first peak of energy at about 3 pm and i'm at my most creative between the hours between midnight and 3 am. I'm quite comfortable with this and wouldn't want to change it.

Stands up early; fights with the eyelids; sees the world in gray; feels terribly cold; has stiff limbs and lacks fine motor skills... only intense light and a very warm room change that. Sounds familiar?

Don't put your alarm clock next to your bed. Instead try putting it across the room so you need to get out of bed to shut it off.

Just any LED won’t do. The sun is a very powerful and a very wide spectrum of light.

@mddevice2108 8 лет назад
Kaasiki is right, you need an LED as powerful as the Sun, that also produces high energy particles like Gamma and X-ray radiation, like the Sun... or else it wont do... because Kisaskaki is a genius that knows that an LED isn't the Sun...

Here's how to really do it Stay up all night then all day it will be painful but don't go to bed till 4pm. You will be so tired that you should have no problem sleeping 12 hours and you will wake up at 4 am super awake.
