Why You Should Avoid Purchasing a GE Combo Washer Dryer - Failures Revealed

Do not buy a combo washer dryer. I know, this is a hard pill to swallow for those of us who have dreams of a quick, smooth laundry process, but in our 9 months of experience, I can personally tell you that this machine is NOT ready for the sales floor. This isn't must my observation, but also a few friends who also purchased these machines right out of the gate.
SPEED QUEENS:
DRYER: rstyle.me/+NFGLdPAmjS2BC7-X0r...
WASHER: rstyle.me/+qQZMJnaFUIYIuprjkt...

Dryer Vent attachment for Dyson: amzn.to/3Y178Rq
(The above links are commissioned. This does not raise your cost, but does pass on a commission to me if you purchase! Thank you for using my links!)
So what went wrong? Error Code 353, otherwise known as a critical compressor overheating, on repeat. This left us with clean, wet clothes. While not ideal, at least we could air dry at that point. I called for a service guy, and one was dispatched the very same day. Awesome, right? The problem was, he left us unable to WASH or DRY, with a guess of 5 to 7 business days for him to get the necessary part (new heat pump) and return.
Fast forward 5 days, and I received a call from the service company. The part was on back order for the next SIX WEEKS! Already almost 1 week in, this meant approximately EIGHT WEEKS without any laundry in our home, during baseball season, with 5 games per week.
Luckily for me, the customer service team at our appliance store is amazing, and replaced it with the Speed Queen set we were eyeing from the beginning. Speed Queens are know to last an average of 25 years, and are the recommendation of every appliance guy we've spoken to in the last few months, as well as the salesman.
If you're looking at a new laundry set up, and want a product that will last, it is NOT a combo unit. Hopefully they will improve on them as time goes by.

I just got this machine recently. Will keep an eye on lint buildup and look to follow the videos others posted about fixing this issue. Praying it keeps working as well as it works now. I love it so far, but time is the real indicator and I haven't had it long enough.

I have this unit, took me week to figure out there was an issue. The filter allows lint to plow by and blog the heat pump coils, cuaseing it to increase dry times and over heating. However, there is fix, a couple videos on RU-vid show the fix, add weather stripping to back, and bottom and top. I did this and now have never had any lint in the lower drain plug filter. Works great now, no issues. I was super frustrated until I figured this out.

I know exactly the post you are referring to. I am using the silicone sealant around the filter. I also clean out the filter and area after EVERY use (and when using the new Pet hair feature, I clean the filter before the wash starts, to remove hair and dander from the filter). I've never had clumps of lint inside the filter chamber. My machine is 7 months old and I really love it. Fingers crossed that the machine will last - for both of us. Good luck!

Same here. My husband wasn’t happy with the outside vent being back in the game, or the 2nd machine. @@thehometownhomestead I do clean that regularly. Even when it’s freshly cleaned I can get a load that absolutely won’t dry. I have 2 choices when that happens. Hang my dripping clothes on the clothesline OR start the load completely over from scratch, including wash. That has resolved it each time so far, but I’m afraid that won’t always work.
@bibidi2568

You need to purchase the top filter modification kit or do watch the video and do it yourself. The problem with the GE all-in-one compared to LG and Samsung is that it doesn't have a self-clean mode that rinses the coils on the heat pump and when the lint gets pass the filters and settles on the coils it causes the unit to fail.

I would be surprised if you get less than 10 years from the Speed Queen set, but I would be far more surprised if you get more than 20 years. Speed Queen is good with regard to reliability, and they are way better than the GE, but they are not as bulletproof as Alliance wants people to believe. Also, this TR set has a different wash action from traditional top load washers with agitators (& the TC series). My experience is that its cleaning performance of the TRs is on par with top loads that don't have an agitator, but can't compete with traditional agitators or with front load washers. I will be interested to hear if you find it adequate for the laundry you do.
@thehometownhomestead
@thehometownhomestead 6 дней назад
At this point, clothes are cleaner than our Maytag (the set we initially replaced) top loader without the agitator. Also cleaner than the GE. I rarely have a shirt come out with spots still on it, even without spot treating all that the kids come home with. 😆 Even with the GE, I often had to run their shirts through a 2nd time with stain remover to get them clean. I was aware of the difference in the TC and TR, but thought this one would be best for us. I’ll keep you posted if a problem should arise, but so far so good!

First of all I just can't justify two hours for one load. The front loading washers at the laundromat I go to are excellent at cleaning and only take 22 minutes. The dryers take 30 to 40 minutes to thoroughly dry even large loads. And that is entirely too much work and effort in maintaining the machine. Based upon your review and the problems you and others describe, GE needs to discontinue this product. Like I said, I can't justify two hours to do one load when I might need something right away, so to speak.

This issue has been well documented for over six months some simple weatherstripping, correct it plus it never hurts to shop vac the coil every so often just like you’re supposed to do with your refrigerator that nobody ever doesIMHO And I did reach out to GE customer service and detailed this issue as well as the quick field fix lol that was three months ago never heard anything back but they may be designing a new filter Plus, you should be cleaning the lint filter after every cycle common sense says just like you would do after every cycle on your dryer In my opinion, GE never should’ve said to only clean every five cycles that was probably done as a marketing convenience factor ploy. Unfortunately, also sounds like you were the victim of a repair person that was not very bright. They should not have left the unit down and out. They should’ve left it to where you could still continue to wash only so that is on them.
@thehometownhomestead

While I do appreciate that you can fix some of the issues with weatherstripping, I still maintain that the machine should be able to be used as the manufacturer states without the unit overheating multiple times per cycle and experiencing a “critical” failure.
